Ah, you can tell this is close to Denmark... Hygge is Danish, for those who would like to know. Fika, is Swedish and here is how a Swede explains it: Fika (noun) is that break you take during the day for coffee or a snack during work/after work/with friends/with family/with relatives/as a date etc... to fika (verb) is to take this break with others to generally be social. And the concoction you need in order to fika is coffee/tea/good bevarage apart from alchohol, something sweet like a cinnamon bun (generally cake or cookie) and another person to fika with. Fika can be done alone, but it's more common to do with others. (I've fika on my own when I'm running errands and need a break, but mostly you will see people fika with others). Fika is such an important thing you will find it hard to be social in Sweden if you don't know how to do it. Your coworkers will come up to you and say "fika" which translates to: stop your work, let's take a break. Fika is also when most of Sweden solve their internal work related problems, because work is quite often brought up as a topic when you are at work and when you meet your other coworkers, they tend to be able to give advice or help you. Fika is also important in order to stay close to friends. Everyone knows what fika is, this I've used when I haven't met someone for a while and I can ask them "Shall we fika" and if they have time, I have never heard a no. Fika is also a very common first date, as it is a social gathering and you get to talk (unlike the cinema). Fika is also important to swedes, as our parents were brought up with it and our grandparents were brought up with it. As a child it was quite common for me to see my grandparents over a fika. Fika is also flexible, it can be done at a café (which there are often plenty of in the cities) or at home. Yes, at home. I've often invited friends home for a fika, which means I bake or buy something sweet, brew coffee and get to meet everyone. If you ever wish to move to Sweden, learn how to fika. We half expect you to, but it's not that hard. Just immensely widespread. Which btw, Swedish baked goods are among the best in the world. So, if you ever visit us come and fika! Sincerely A Swede

@AP-0

Your comment made me really understand how fika is a thing in Finland too. Not suprising, we're just a tiny strech of water from each other :) We just "go for coffee" (kahville) and the concept of a coffee break is very important to us. But yes, you're supposed to sit down with a coffee, and a friend, something to eat and just chat.

@@kayleenlussier4684 I suspect you didn't go, what with corona and all that, but if you do: everyone in Sweden and Denmark speaks English fluently, so you needn't be worried. @Namine1990
@Namine1990 5 лет назад
They talked about sth like that in one of their podcasts. They don't really like that expression "Tourist traps". If the location of the restaurant is awesome, than ofcourse it's gonna' be more expensive, that doesn't make the food less enjoyable. And if someone says you shouldn't drink or eat that because it's a Tourist trap than the only thing you do is compromising yourself of an experience (Like not drinking sangria in Barcelona). Maybe that helps you a little bit :) Unfortunatly I can't remember what episode it was 🤔 But a video or Podcast about the worst restaurants they have been to, would be interesting! I agree :)
@crystalr6461
@crystalr6461 5 лет назад
@@Namine1990 Ahh yeah. I remember that episode. I think they were talking about tourist traps in terms of location and food being more expensive. Sorry I don't know the exact term. Like for example, I've seen a documentary where tourists would be offered to buy souvenirs and if they say no the vendor would make be angry and make a scene. Or when tourist will be distracted while accomplices pick their pockets.

@WateryStar
@WateryStar 5 лет назад
@@crystalr6461 No you have the right terminology. I think "Tourist Trap" means something different to different people or people that grew up in different parts of the world. Being an American, living in in the US, I grew up with it being more similar to how you put it, a place that is a waste of time. Like a really tacky place that is nothing but a big souvenir shop.

They loved the idea so much they started to have a fika break mid morning and it's something we still do to this day. Everyday we break and spend time with each other over coffee and pastries. We even take turns baking for everyone. I really think it brings us closer together and makes us feel more like a family. Which is nice since I moved country to work with this organization.

When Simon was super excited about the goat cheese ice cream, I totally understood how he felt. There's an ice cream shop in the states called "Salt & Straw" and they occasionally make seasonal goat cheese ice cream that's so delicious. Especially during the fall, they make this spiced goat cheese & pumpkin pie flavor and it's divineeee

This is a very nice food guide, since I’m planning to go to Malmö next year for a convention. Also the way you pronounce "hygge" as hugge is really funny to me agkhafjld

Dane here, this was awesome to watch! Even though we danes have our little sibling rivalry going with Sweden, it's great to see you appreciate our chared culture of Hygge :D Will you be posting a video about your trip to Denmark too?

You know that creamy vanilla custard at 16:33? In some parts of Sweden (like Gothenburg where I'm from) it's called "farmors hosta", which means "grandmother's cough". Do with that information what you will.

You’ll never get that great fish and chips in London - you need to be on the coast! Try Cornwall, Devon or the Welsh coast :) Malmo looks amazing!!

The way you guys talk about food it reminds me of, Marshal, from How I Met Your Mother. Specifically when he talked about the burger. Which is probably the most beautiful, poetic way you ever could. Love, love, LOVE this episode! And now I have more places to add to my bucket list 😍

I studied abroad in 5 different cities in Sweden this past May - Malmo being one of them. I remember existing the train station and felt an overwhelming welcome, admiration, and love for Malmo. This city is one of the most beautiful cities I've been to yet. And all of the clips in your video, I recognize! Fika was literally all day, everyday. One of the foods that I miss the most is Kanenullar! I ate one almost every day. And their fish and chips .. oh, the states don't do it the same. Every cafe, every restaurant had their own aesthetics which I love. I love how outdoorsy restaurants are. Almost every restaurant I went to, they had outdoor seating. I can't tell you how many times me or my friends were about to get hit by a bike because we were walking in the bike lanes (the ones by the side walks). Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to use the scooters but Sweden is such a walking-friendly country that I used that as my main transportation; otherwise, it was the bus. Did you guys notice that their buses have a middle section that can stretch to help with turns?! I was completely shocked! I'm so glad you guys enjoyed your time there. Hopefully you guys can visit there again, soon. I definitely am going to try to. :)

Loved the video and almost every place you went to was new even to me as a citizen of Malmö! (I usually hang out in the cheaper/dirtier parts of town. :D) You nailed fika (pronounced like week, but feek. Feek-ah!) and made me want to have a fika for the first time in several months. Last time I went for fika we actually strolled by Köld and I agree that their ice cream is the best I've ever had! Still sad I was abroad when you guys were here but I'm so happy you enjoyed your stay! And I must try Unholy Water some day, it seems like a... reasonable cocktail. ;)

If anyone's wondering, 2 schoold I've attended here in Sweden have an extra long break around 9-10 for fika. And then a regular lunch. That's how important it is.
