amazing video evan, thanks so much. i am a beginner seeking to understand the various strategies and hitting this point where true LAGs would either read me far too easily playing TAG and then just start pushing me around to the point where i got suckered into wanting to call their *seemingly* consistently over the top bluffs.... disaster! shifting gears and playing positionally in response has made me feel more versatile and situationally aware. i have actually shut down some obviously experienced LAGs (and one trick donkeys) when they saw me play back at them intelligently! excited to keep learning. great resource you're offering.

love the video series, ive been around poker as a kid forever but never got into it till just recently, turning 21 soon i figured i should apply my wits at the game and learn how to play for the long run, Keep it up and KEEP STACKIN! with as many vids as you have id advise upgrading your mic/audio system just to get some crystal clear audio quality , around 14:00 it gets pretty fuzzy. just my opinion.

I'm not sure a player can afford to play only one speed. I'm a NIT in a full 10-player ring game but as a game becomes more short handed my game speeds up to follow suit. Adaptability is key. If a game ever gets down to 5 handed I become very LAGy which can be quite disorienting for opponents who are expecting me to play a tight game. This is particularly effective in a tournament structure. By the time your opponents realize you've sped up rather than just getting a good run of cards you've substantially increased your stack. Likewise tourney blind structures at some point will require us to speed up. Even in a full ring cash game we can't be overly cautious and we need to be looking at spots to bluff and make hero calls. A nit will often be read as weak-tight, so we need to have the situational awareness to capitalize on this perception. Capitalizing on the former is easier. There will always be spots where the action/board/players in the hand etc create a good spot to take a shot at the pot under the cover of your tight image. The latter is tougher though. If an opponent reads you as weak-tight and plans to run you down, that can be profitable for you, but it can also cause an expensive blunder. Far from being the easiest style to play, against some opponents you will need to develop a great deal of confidence in your read because you will face tough decisions. Being to the immediate left of LAGs who have you in their cross hairs doesn't hurt either.

I typically switch gears. When I first get to a live game for the first 30 minutes to an hour I'm typically a tight aggressive because I'm casing the table and I don't want to bring any attention to myself. After that once I earn people's trust I revert back to my default which is Loose Aggressive. I used to be weak tight and when I first started for about 3/4 years I was a fearless Donkey
@gripsed
@gripsed 8 лет назад
+Cdub2k nice to see you progressed to a confident play who controls the action, that's whats up!
@antjoshwww
@antjoshwww 7 лет назад
Cdub2k the other advantage while casing the table is that perception you play only value card which later can be used in many ways in tricky situation such as turning a bad board into a bluff. yes basically balance in tight and loose. this is my default as i try to show down good hands in the first 30 to 40 hands then let loose a barrage of raises from favorable position and showdown good hands from time to time for balance. ey loose players can have good hands too. cheers

Keep in mind that someone can play nitty in one context but loose in another. If you play tight at the cash table, but kick your aggression levels up a gear in a tournament context, you'll probably end up ahead of the curve. But this also means that if you've profiled a player in one context, it's often a mistake to use that profile in another context.

I think the portion on the LAG type where it says "Focused on being the best player ever" should read "Thinks they're the best player ever ". That's how it is around here with them anyways. Or is there a very thin line between total donk and LAG? Is there a LAD (loose aggressive donk)?
@michelcharbonnier7603
@michelcharbonnier7603 9 лет назад
+Relics bane There is a huge difference between a donk (also called aggro-fish) and a good LAG. I can say that, because I transformed from the former to the latter (at least I hope so ;). A donk just throws money out the window by thinking he is just a genious and can outplay people on any given board with any two cards. A good LAG is anyone elses worst nightmare, because he knows very well how to pick spots where opponents are weak, he knows other player types weaknesses and he is able to use his aggressive image to get paid on big value bets when he makes a hand. And, on top of that, a good LAG is a superior hand reader, which makes it very difficult to get value out of him unless you are enducing a misstimed bluff out of him.
@antjoshwww
@antjoshwww 7 лет назад
Michel Smiffi a good lag plays more hands than the other categories. good lags have great focus and hand reading skills and can immediately discern playing styles and tendencies in 30 to 40 hands and tiptoes around these players to extract values from poor and monster hands. as a feard player everyone shuts down and you can start the tipitoe dance all night long. also have a war song in your heart as you go to the battlefield or cardroon

I like being tight, aggressive and waiting for premium hands; and making the occasional bluff. But last Friday I thought I play differently and it didn't work out for me. I called any cards (like a novice) and wasting honey money. So yea, I like to be tight and aggressive. Playing small ball poker is good also. You don't need to bet £1K to win £50...but instead put 1/2, 3/4 of the pot to get information.

+Herbalist If you are not a joking reg (which could be possible), and you really are/were a fish, gratulations! You are already ahead of all the other fish by KNOWING that. Most fish just think they play good poker and blame the pokerroom for being rigged when they lose. Good luck on the tables (unless you're playing in a hand vs. me, I hope...)
@AcidAlexx

Michel Smiffi haha no not joking, show me the ways sir
@michelcharbonnier7603
@michelcharbonnier7603 9 лет назад
+Herbalist Well, Even is the pro, not me ;) But I think the first thing you should do is think about what player (or fish) type you currently are and what kind of player type you are hoping to become. If you are the classic "Passive-fish" or fish, your problem usually is gonna be calling too much. So, first step would be to stop calling, obviously. Think about hands, you are currently usually calling preflop with (something like smaller PP, suited connectors, suited Aces etc.?) and go more towards an "either raise or fold" mentality with them. Start playing slightly less hands (or way less hands of you are playing like 60%), but the hands you play, play them with power, aggression and a clear though process. Becoming a NIT is pretty easy. Wait, fold any bad or "playable" hands and play the few great hands you get very fast and hard. Becoming a TAG requires a lot of study and work and reading a lot of poker books, but when you do that, you know how to play pretty much all standart hands and spots. Becmoing a (good) LAG is the most challenging thing. You have to develop very goof hand reading skills, stuy your game as well as the game of the typical opponents and exploit their weaknesses.

BATUR IMIN neither or all of the styles which make him good. that makes him great is intense focus and patience in the game. there is a video of him folding almost all his hands in a 9 handed sit and go and busted third from gus hansen

I stopped at "A-Type" person. This was a mixture of good info and too much over thinking on trying to relate poker strategies/styles to people in life. If I were to redo this video I would remove any kind of analogy that does not simply speak of the understanding the moves these styles use and their limitations within the style. Good Try - I still thumbs it up.
