Allen's idea about seeing what vehicle it is before deciding to stop is the reason Australian Emergency vehicles all have both red and blue lights and used to have the same siren. You don't check whether its a cop or an ambulance, you're required to stop for them all.

In Canada you're *supposed* to stop for them all, but people often just don't notice police and ambulances because they're basically car-sized and everyone's subwoofers are drowning out the sirens. Which is why fire trucks automatically respond to all medical calls - between the much wider dispersal of fire stations and the fact the everyone notices the giant-ass red truck with the massive air horn on it, fire can often get to an injury first.

Most parts of US you have to pull off or move over for emergency vehicles, regardless if police, fire, or ambulance. It's usually law in fact and if you don't you can get citation (usually you don't, but I've seen it happen). In Washington state you also have to legally slow down or move over for a pulled over emergency vehicle to give it safe space.

Only thing I’d add is that in the US, while we are required to pull over to let emergency vehicles pass, some drivers have developed their own unofficial traffic rule which states that, “if an emergency vehicle approaches with its sirens on, proceed to not give a shit and pretend it’s not there.” Sometimes these drivers even seem to come together to obstruct emergency services as efficiently as possible.

@@benjaminlamothe2093 The idea that motorists were required to disassemble their engine if it spooked a horse may be an urban legend. There are sources dating back to 1968 that claim that such a law was passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1896 unanimously and then vetoed by the governor. But it seems rather implausible that they would pass a law requiring people to do something that is obviously impossible. I haven't been able to find the name of the bill anywhere, nor its text (though Michael Munger offers a "summary" attributed to Karelovitz in 1968 which is often asserted to be from the actual bill). The red flags or lights and noisemakers were real laws though, at least in Vermont if not in Pennsylvania.

In The Netherlands it has become impossible to tell the difference between ambulance and police sirens, because they changed the ambulance from having 3 distinct sounds to 2, same as the police. Fire is just really loud, as usual. So loud in fact that it's been discovered to cause damage to the workers' hearing. Why would it be necessary to be that loud? The police and ambulance sirens are already plenty loud if you ask me.

Pennsylvania has a fairly large Amish/Mennonite community (often called "Pennsylvania Dutch" which is a misconstruing of Pennsylvania Deutsch, as they're descended from German immigrants). They've been fairly anti-technology in re: any technology created after about 1600 since -- well, probably since about 1600. In areas where they had strong political influence (such as a number of rural Pennsylvania counties) they would often push for measures to be passed such as the ones described here.

In Vermont, the law is that if you are driving and there is someone leasing or riding a horse you have to slow down to 15 miles per hour until you are past it. For emergency vehicles you have to pull over as far to the side as you can and stop. People are pretty good about that.

The number of times this show just outright lies is annoying. No, the rule in America is not that you just stop in place when there's a siren. That's insane. The only time you do that is when you are already stopped at an intersection, you aren't supposed to start moving to pull aside, instead staying in place to let the vehicle go around in the oncoming lane. But no you don't just hit the brakes and stand in place blocking the road if you are in motion. You pull aside like anywhere else. The stay put rule only applies to being stopped at an intersection, where everyone staying put guarantees an emergency vehicle a path around by in the oncoming lanes.
