Young Justice: Outsiders continues the good ol YJ show many years after it fell into a sad, sad abyss called "Cancellation." But yeah, it's back. Woohoo. I'm happy some people enjoyed it--in fact, a lot of people loved it--but for me, it was a disappointment.

After the end of season 1 the entire philosophy of this show seemed to become "why SHOW character development when we can just say it happened off screen?"

You perfectly summed up what doesn't work about s2 & s3. Worst part is this doesn't happen just to the characters, it happens to the plot too (see: the finale for season 2).

@@kyleellis9177 No, some development happens off screen and sets up arcs for the season, most of the development still happens on screen. Yeah I don't agree with that. Some plot revelations happen off-screen, but most of the actual character development happens on screen. We don't need to see every detail of a character's story to understand what's going on.

The problem started with the second season. TOO MANY CHARACTERS. They should have taken a leaf out of Teen Titan's book: Focus on the core cast of characters, and let side characters be side characters. They are trying to make a show about the whole of the DC universe. They can't do that. The old DCAU didn't do that. They had a show about Batman, a show about Superman, and a show about the whole team, which tackled big ideas. But they did it piecemeal.
@matthias720
@matthias720 3 года назад
Yeah. When you have too many characters in a comic book, you spin some of them off into their own title. They aren't doing that here, and they're attempting to shoehorn in too many characters at once for the story to be balanced against character building moments.

I agree, I wasn’t as interested in the second season because the characters I loved from the first season were shafted to the side (particularly Dick/Nightwing who was the highlight of season one for me)
@GamerSlyRatchet1
@GamerSlyRatchet1 3 года назад
But the show does have clear main and side characters. Part of the issue is that people have the impression that every single side character is a main character. I mean, I legit saw a lot of people get mad at Batwoman's tiny cameo in the season premiere because it was introducing a new character and that she was going to be underdeveloped.....but she was just meant to be a cameo.
@noahreisner5199

GamerSlyRatchet1 THIS! I agree season 3 had its flaws but there were 9 characters who were the central focus and it stayed on them (Nightwing, Superboy, Artemis, Geo-Force, Halo, Forager, Cyborg, Black Lightning, and Beast boy) with other plots only happening as side events to flesh out the world. In my honest opinion the only flaw with season 3 (other than the clearly reduced budget that affected every aspect of the show) was Beast Boy and the outsiders, they took way too much focus off the main plot and only Beast Boy was developing as a character while the rest just hung out. The idea is fine and an episode could have been given to his team forming but there were 4+ episodes about a group that doesn’t matter to the main plot. If they had cut that and given the time to the other main characters I think we would all be saying this season was as good as the first two.

@Tyler_W

I think they were just flexing a bit because they weren't constrained by network guidelines. It didn't feel completely out of step with the previous seasons in my opinion because if you go back to those seasons, they definitely had mature themes/subject matter. They just weren't always overt with it. These things were there, they just didn't draw too close attention to the dirty details of it like season 3 did. Case in point, season 2 had human trafficking no different than season 3 did, it's just that season 2 was just a bit more sanitized akd a little less raw in how it handled the subject matter. As a general rule, though, I don't think the show wemt out of its way to be graphic apart from Halo. I think it did mature, but only slightly in terms of presentation, not really in terms of content, subject matter and themes, because that was always there. That level of maturity in the writing was one of the reasons why YJ was such a surprise hit and appealed to older audiences than the network wanted.

Idk, made sense to me. I think it feels a lot better when you view the whole premise of the show as "the DCU through the eyes of new generations of young heroes/sidekicks." The premise is inherently big in scope. With the exception of some side characters just not getting the time to develop, I think the show works perfectly well as an ensemble. It doesn't feel focused on a few select characters because that's not what it was trying to be. The reason you can accurately argue that was the intent for season 1 is because they had to have a starting point and build from there. It kinda seems like some people want to stay at that starting point and not the "build from there" part. That's fine, that's just not what YJ is trying to be.

In an interview, the creators said they intended for the show to have a rotation of casts almost every season and to continue with the time jumps. Totally agree. Justice League Unlimited handled the prospect of a massive cast unbelievably well, by taking 1 or 2 core members and then having them team up with newer members and writing a majority of their episodes as standalone to feature different characters, but the leaving the uniting feature their character growth & development, and not rely on some mega massive arching plot to be the driving force of the story every single episode. The biggest issue with the show is the whole "tell don't show" aspect it's been going for. I hate the time jumps for basically skipping massive changes to the roster and the characters as we know it and they barely acknowledge them. This is especially bad when a lot of the time skips basically follow the comics and the show is telling you "tough luck go read the books kid if you wanna know what happens." on top of trying to shoehorn in every comic book idea possible at the same time. - Aquagirls death. - A Death in the family and then trying to give us a hint of Jason Todd with the league of shadows after resurrection despite us never knowing him in the show - Johnathan and Damien being born at the same time. - The Killing Joke happening. - Doom Patrol Like how tf is Tean Batman already on to Nightwing, Red Robin, Spoiler, Orphan, Thirteen, Troia Arrowette, and Batwoman at the same time without any sort of explanation or depth into the characters that came to be....they're just there toot tickle the fancies of the comic reader yet even comic readers are confused as to why they are there with no explanation. And while we are here, let's be honest with the character designs. They have gotten way worse and uninspired. Season 1, the original 5 looked dope and it was a breath of fresh air and everyone looked and felt unique. But now by season, 3 everyone looks like the animated version of the first x-men movie...just bland generic hi-tech and new age "leather" mission suits. There's no personality to half the designs especially in the base layer of the line-art. That was already an issue in season 1 as everyone outside of the main 5 looked soooooooooo uninspired, (Wonder Woman, Superman, Joker, etc....) Also one of my biggest issues is that Halo is there for basically a signal for the creators of the show to be "OH WOWEE LOOK AT US WE'RE TOTALLY A MUCH MORE ADULT SHOW."
@radix4400
@radix4400 3 года назад
Another thing is that despite having a bunch of new characters with the main characters, they still have recurring new characters who develop and are basically part of the cast. And they all become integral to the final story.

I agree, especially about Halo. Writers: A healing character? let's brutally maim her as much as possible because we can without consequences!" @benaffblack
@benaffblack 3 года назад
@@radix4400 What I loved the most about all those side characters is that they had their own sense of true agency before and still after joining the league. In JLU they weren't just "league members" who were just going along with the flow or only forced into action by someone else. - Supergirl joining the Legion to find her own place out of Superman's shadow. - Huntress still being a no holds back vigilante. - Green Arrow still concerned about street-level crime and not getting swept away by the power of the league. - Captain Atom being a U.S. soldier first and foremost. In Young Justice, everyone here is just a yes man to either Batman, Aquaman II, Nightwing, and Wonderwoman.

We're basically just told about some interesting stories that could have been seen, but instead we just her about them. I personally wish we could have seen - The development of the new Young Justice Team - Conners and M'ganns breakup - Robin becoming Nightwing - (Maybe) A development of Kaldurs sexuality - Kaldur becoming Aquaman - Zatana struggling with the loss of her father more, as well as Zataras perspective while inside the helmet - etc

And maybe it plays a little too fast and loose with how big that ensemble can be and how much plot they can skip through, but I don't think it's necessarily wrong. Hell, bigger budget is right. Despite Season 2’s problems, it at LEAST looked good and still had that toy deal money. The loss of the toy deal really seemed to degrade the visual aspects of the show. Season 2 had a small issue that was ramped up to 11 in season 3: mainly streching ourselves thin by exploring the universe, introducing as many characters as possible and contiuning to develop our existing characters. While its wasn't as big an issue in season 2, in season 3, the new characters that we focus on aren't as interesting as the originals. A lot of interesting possibilities are lost, unexplored, not explored enough or happen off screen and everyone is speechifying. Almost Every line, especially in the latter half of the season, especially from Beast boy feels unnatural and exposition. I really don't care about whether or not the outsiders are trending. I don't care about Lightnings morale outrage. I don't care about markovia or Halo's search for an identity or the will they won't they of will and Artemis. YJ as a show was character-driven in the first season then in seasons 2 and 3 was more plot-driven. It basically when from a comic book solo story to a comic book team up story. In team books you don't learn everything about every character, that's what solos are for. YJ S2 and 3 feel like that.

It exposed me to a whole new genre because I fell in love with the characters. And while I’m no comic book buff, I definitely have become a big fan of DC because of this show. Well look we added 30 of them. One of them is bound to be your favorite". For me, the biggest problem is that they dedicated much of the show's focus on characters that had zero or little interest for the viewers. Foreger had a lot of screen time, appeared in many episodes, etc....and nothing was done. Hes just there and has no depth, almost zero backstory, and zero serious developments. Take him away and you almost lose nothing to the season. Even worse, the same applies to Cyborg. We're supposed to care about Voilet....for some reason....but shes a bland and a plot device character that got far more screen time than she deserved or was even needed. Beastboy.....even as a beastboy fan....I found him unlikeable by the end of the show. There was a lot of potential for him....but ultimately they tried making him something completely contrary to who he is. They tried to make him a mix between impulse and nightwing....and it was like watching someone trying to force a cube in a circular hole. Im all for new takes on the characters. I thought they did it well with Brion and Terra. Beastboy? Its just cringy. I could go on and on about other characters(not all were bad)....but to change it up..... The power scaling was always a little wonky in this series but never as much as in this season. Lobo doesnt hold back....he simply doesnt care in a fight. Yet there are multiple NORMAL humans taking hits from him like its no big deal. The story suffered greatly in the sense thst by halfway through the season....it felt empty. There was no feeling of impending dread of the final fight or situation. Most episodes felt like they didnt even need to be made. I agree the plot of the series tried to do too many things and its failed the same that the new Young Justice comic is a failure. Its always adding new things, but never adding depth.

I think part of the problem Outsiders had was trying to tell a big, overarching story, as well as focusing on the smaller, individual characters. The main characters from season 1 had less screen time in season 2, and they had even less screen time in season 3. That's not to say they weren't there, but many fans, myself included, are invested in the original team. We weren't given as much of what we wanted. I think all the characters, old and new, could have been used to a greater capacity, but the price would be the overarching story. I just can't see DC greenlighting anything that doesn't make their heroes look "cool" or "epic". Then again, I heard superhero comics described like geek soap operas, so I'm not sure I should be expecting anything too great from DC, regardless of how much I wish otherwise.

My issues with this season: 1) The animation was a huge downgrade from previous seasons. WB animation seems to do the same thing with DCAMU movies as well. 2) Not just the original cast of characters, but the characters that were introduced in the second season of the show didn't get their share of character development they deserved (Batgirl/Oracle, Robin III, Wonder Girl, Bumblebee, etc.). They didn't get it in S2 because of the show being too plot-driven and less character-driven. I was hoping that we'll at least get to know them better this season but that didn't happen. 3) That brings me to my third point. We are being asked to care about these new and kind of obscure characters we never heard about before, while already introduced and more prominent characters people knew from the comics (who never really got much time to shine or never got animated before) barely get any screen-time or dialogue. At least I'm happy about Beast Boy. 4) The time skips. A lot of valuable character defining and character building elements are flushed down the toilet. S2 had this problem too and it carried over to the third season. In S2 we never got to see Jason as Robin and he's already revealed to be dead. We never actually see how this affected the rest of the team and what their memories and relationships with Jason were. In S3, not only did we not get Red Hood, we just get a hint about where he is.Wally left the team in S2 and we don't know what led to him or Artemis doing it. We don't know what happened in between S2 and S3 with regards to Arsenal. So he's not as hot headed as before? What kind of development took place before he reached that stage? And Barbara. What even happened to her b/w S2 and 3? Did she get paralysed because of the Joker or something else? How was she and the team affected by that? We didn't even get to know her as Batgirl properly or even her relationshipwith the rest of the team. Where she stood as a team member. We are just stated some things about this stuff and never got to see them ourselves. 5) Which brings me to my fifth point. Too many characters, too little time to flesh them out and we are never shown how the team played off of each other when they are not on mission. How their relationships with each other are, their team dynamics and all. S1 really fleshed the team members' characters and how they came together as a team and how they overcame the obstacles in the path of being an effective team. In S2 and 3, all of this stuff gets lost in the muddle of time skips and the story being way too plot focused with liitle time for characters to grow and team dynamics to develop. We don't know the backstories (the show's version) of many of these characters either.
@arseniczirconium9098
@arseniczirconium9098 3 года назад
This season is also guilty of handling too many plot threads at the same time. The main cast is splintered across several teams and so is the show's focus on them. We really should have got more time with Rocket and Donna Troy on the team. Tim and Cassie's relationship came out of nowhere with no setup whatsoever which is really unnecessary too since Stephanie exists on the same team. We also had the animated debut of Spoiler and Cassandra Cain but never get anything from their characters. Cass especially such a great character. She's such an important member of the Batfamily. She should have given some time to shine. I really hope the next season makes her Batgirl and shows her relationship with Barbara, Bruce, Tim and Stephanie. I don't mind the new characters by themselves.I just had an issue with the show not caring about already established characters and diving into setting up new characters. It's like they skipped a step in the procedure and continued with the next step anyway.

The original teen titans take was very abrupt and left field like we shouldve gotten a whole season of her being on the team then paying it off with her betrayal in the season 3 finale, and overarch the plot into the first half of season 4. "Too much focus on the plot and not enough focus on the characters" Couldn't have said it better myself. This perfectly sums up how I felt about Young Justice Outsiders on the whole. It wasn't a bad season, but it was definitely rushed through when it didn't need to be. The writers shouldn't have made themselves worry about so many arcs going on at once and instead should've honed in on each and every theme, allowed them to grow and breathe, and give them time to develop.

This show has too many characters and it gets on my nerves. I don't necessarily think it should focus on the original cast but it needs to focus on someone. The issues I have with Season 3 were more technical in nature, specifically just how it feels like a downgrade from the first two Seasons. The animation has taken a noticeable hit and is outright bad in some cases. Compared to the much more fluid and energetic animation in the previous Seasons, it really stands out. Likewise, the reduced character count feels less like a creative decision and more like a limitation as a result of the smaller voice actor pool. I gather they did have a smaller budget than the earlier Seasons, so I would assume that is the reason.

The only real problem is too many characters and not enough screentime. Justice League Unlimited handled that by having the core cast interact with the side characters in episodes that were centered on telling us who they are and their story, their relevance, and that's where it ended. Young Justice is actually having the same problem as Glee did in it's 4th season- trying to be everywhere at once. Not willing to let go of the old characters while wanting you to care about the new characters, causing there to be way too many storylines and not enough time for viewers to get invested or keep up. They can either make longer episodes or reduce the core cast and problem solved. Degrassi is a show that handled this really well by transitioning main characters to background and then off screen in the year after they graduated, and grandfathering in the next generation by having them move from background to supporting to main characters. When it comes to long running shows like this you have to choose- is the show about the main characters or is it about the place (the school, the club, the team etc)? By not choosing it gets messy. Messy, like how the final episode of the season should've been the close of the anti life plot, but then we still had to close out Artemis' storyline and the Markoffs, the later getting the final episode and making us question what the focus of the season actually was. Otherwise the season itself had a lot going for it- It just needed to be tamed, refined, focused. I hope the coming season gives us that.

Great analysis. I always wondered in relation to the outsiders bit, why did they make Beast Boy the leader and founder? He has no real connection to the meta-humans. He himself is not a natural meta he got his powers from Martian blood and some monkey god nonsense. He’s not even an outsider thematically. He’s always had a loving family and support system even the ones he lost and on top of that he’s a beloved hero and TV` star in this universe he’s the opposite of an outsider. Wouldn’t it be better it was Brion founded that group? He was cast out of his family and country. His shortsightedness and inexperience causes him to be distant from other heroes. He’s also a natural meta and the meta human trafficking deeply affected his life, from the killing of his parents, his sister’s kidnapping, uncles a meta, and he almost got trafficked himself. As he learns more about his powers and becomes more accepted, it would make sense for him to start his own team as something for metas to look up to and show growth in his development.

Honestly, everything that you said about it not being developed enough really explained just why I didn't like it and more importantly, didn't have any connection to a lot of the characters. I also didn't like it because at times it was just pure cringe. Really cheesy and awkward (like some of the characters were so awkward that it didn't feel natural and had the humor that was made for a five year old to laugh at). This might seem a bit harsh but I hated Forager so much for this reason that I was happy when I thought he had died. I really liked Artemis though, and the og characters. That episode about Artemis and Wally was one that I really liked because we got to see some of the old og characters and closure for Wally. I may or may not have watched the whole season just because I knew that we got closure for Wally eventually. So out of ten I give them these: Season 1: 10/10 Season 2: 8.5/10 Season 3: 4.5/10 Season 4: i'm scared

Getting see stuff like the clone Roys hanging out, the show going into a darker direction, adult Billy Baston, the Super Sons, and. Vandal’s backstory were pretty fun. But the further I got into season 3 the more it felt like nothing of significance was happening and that two many characters/plot points to a show that already had arguably too many characters and plot points by the end of season 2. Then part 2 happened and the show basically off a cliff, smashed its head against a sharp rock, and then completely forgot what it was doing for the last half season and became a completely different show. Like I refuse to believe part 1 and 2 were written around the same time frame and that part 2 didn’t undergo any major rewrites. So many plot points and character development moments felt completely rushed and the show felt more like a rip off of the original Teen Titans show than it has ever felt before.

I just think the main thing is YJ season 2 and 3 are much more anthologies. The first half of season 3 has a core cast, but generally you're jumping into one off plots with beginning, middle and endings. These are not continuous through lines. This is not an anime which has a core focus. There's an episode about Victor, there's an episode about Kaldur, and there are recurring elements to the story (like Apokalips) but that's more or less just a backdrop to These are thematic and plot-driven stories, not character-driven ones. This is not Nightwing's story. Nightwing's story plays a role in what's happening, but more than anything there is no singular, individual focus of the storytelling. And that's not how this show is handled. It's about the story. I don't think anything felt rushed or underdeveloped or like I needed more. I don't know if I felt empathy for the cast at all because there are just so many characters, but it was *meticulously* plotted, and certainly had a focus.

Is it just me or does anyone else kinda roll their eyes at the meta human thing since it’s very blatant what it’s supposed to parallel in the comic world which is strange since in comics a meta isn’t really like the same as a mutant in that basically anyone can become a meta and I think even Superman is considered one. It’s just a classification of a person with powers and at least in some other stuff it’s only distinction is them not being magical powers Also they did my man Shade dirty again and I hope when Stargirl season 2 comes out that he will finally be recognized as the badass gentleman anti-hero he is

@@TobiNano There is nothing wrong with introducing new characters, but Young Justice introduces too many. We had a huge number of new characters added in the second season, and only Blue Beetle and Impulse served any purpose. I don't even get why the other members of the team were even in the show if it wasn't doing anything with them. I have read the season was supposed to be longer but the brain dead executives cut it short, which explains, some of that. That said, the show still shoved Blue Beetle and Impulse into the spotlight at the expense of characters who had been around since the start of the show. It also had Red Arrow hook up with Cheshire in between seasons, that came out of nowhere (I know that happened in the comics, but just because something was in the comics doesn't mean your adaptation should do it, look at how people reacted to Gwen's death in Amazing Spider Man 2), and replaced him with Arsenal. I have no idea what they were thinking with that character. They brought the real Roy Harper in, and designed him after a change was made to the character that the fans despised. And top it all off that season killed Wally. I have seen people defend that death, and I say, just because something is realistic doesn't mean you do it. It would be realistic if some of the nonpowered characters were to die from a sniper out of nowhere, but nobody wants to see that. That was no lead up to his death, the scene was going to kill Barry, but the writers realized there was no emotional attachment to him so Wally was killed instead. I have read they planned to bring Wally back, but they still haven't done it yet. They had better do it next season, you do not kill off major characters for shock deaths like that, it's terrible writing.
@TobiNano
@TobiNano 3 года назад
dragonstormx introducing minor characters allow them to sell toys which is the biggest market for superhero movies, shows, etc. Which is why mcu is doing it continuously and why JLU did it in the past. I think that’s fine, you don’t have to focus on all the characters you introduced. And it’s kinda cool to see them pop up once in a while to show the vast catalogue of heroes from the comics. I think it would be pretty boring to keep doing the same team of heroes. They had their spotlight, their stories are done and we move on. I don’t think Wally’s death was random at all. At least not like Joel from Tlou2. I don’t think it didn’t have a build up, he was out of the hero business, decided to come back for one last mission and bites the dust. He was always shown slower than flash and impulse so it kinda make sense. I think introducing lots of characters can be done if you focus on some of them, and put the others on the back seat in supporting. It’s just, the characters they introduced are so lame and badly written.

I was pumped for static being on the show, but he barely did anything and was underused throughout the entire season.

outsiders legit set the expectations in my head that "if something interesting is happening, the b plot will suddenly kick in" after watching the entire season

That "Doom Patrol Go" sequence was still pretty genius. Although it is weird to see the TTG style not Flash-animated.

Problem number one If you don't live in the US or Canada there is no (legal) way to watch the show

I didnt feel like paying for their streaming service just so I could watch this one show so I watched it on illegal streaming sites instead. They should have just put it up on Netflix.

Tooo many characters in this season, the original team is sidelined for the most part

Ugh, Young Justice had so much promise... then Blue Bettle happened. I gave Outsiders a chance but it was a totally different show

The heck are you on about? Blue Beetle and Impulse are the only characters that made season 2 actually enjoyable.

I want to know who wrote Halo character, her response to racism was “that’s not me anymore” and what the point of her wearing a headdress if she wears a skin tight suit

It was moronic, it's like they wanted to pander to the show's (non-existent...?) Muslim crowd, by not understanding their faith at all. Either she has a reason for wearing the headdress or not. This weird "it feels right...despite it representing a piece of me that I don't resonate with anymore" made no sense.

@@grantwilson4506 She even said that she wasn't a muslim in the show, what's even weirder

It feels like the writers wanted everyone to pat them on the back for being so inclusive, yet they hardly did any research on Islam.

Yeah, I’d say “focus” is a problem for every season of this show. No character storyline gets enough space, and the ones that got screen time in season 1 weren’t things that could be resolved perfectly, like M’Gann and Artemis’s growth to hate themselves less or Conner starting to overcome her anger. These are things that will continue be things these characters work on, possibly for the rest of their lives. I actually liked season 3 better than the previous ones though, because the plot’s subject matter was much more interesting for me.
