4:00 Different problems with sugar
5:39 The guidelines for carbohydrates
Today we're going to talk about sugar and diabetes, and what I would eat if I had diabetes. Diabetes and other blood sugar related problems are among the most common health problems I see.
Sugar increases insulin, which lowers the sugar in the blood and puts it in storage as fat. Carbs and sugar or carbs mixed with protein raise insulin, but fat does not raise insulin.
We do not need carbohydrates. A healthy diet should consist of fats and a moderate amount of proteins. A diabetic diet should have high quantities of fat. Sugar stimulates hunger, and you crave more food. 40 % of all heart diseases are related to excess sugar. Keeping your blood sugar levels in control is a primary objective for a healthy body.
What I would eat if I had diabetes:
• Low carbs
• Moderate protein
• High fats
The current recommendations for carbohydrates based on the American Diabetes Association are 45-60 grams of carbohydrates per day.
I believe blood sugar problems can be improved if the right foods are eaten, but overall sugars and carbs must be reduced. Fats can be increased.
Correction: at 0:26 - I mentioned that the "High sugar diet or high carbohydrate diets are really high-fat diets" The correction is that high sugar diets and high carb diets are producing high amounts of fat. They are not high-fat diets.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. Follower for life. Age 75, eat low carb, excercise, and still working full time. Split wood on the weekends. We went low carb nearly 10 years ago, and I was told by everyone what a bad idea it was. The proof is in the pudding (or lack thereof)

Thank you Dr. Berg, your advice changes lives. I was diagnosed with diabetes in August of 2018 with an A1C of 14.1, the Dr said that was the highest she had seen. I was put on metformin with no conversation about my diet or anything else as a recommendation. I was determined to find a way to address this without medication. I found your channel and started using your recommendation. In November I was down to 7.1 and this month(February) am measured as 5.1. There is so much confusion about diabetes and proper treatment and I am very grateful that I found your channel, thank you for all you do.

I stopped the metformin after 2 weeks of taking it, it was a low dose of 500mg and didn't seem to have much effect. I doubled the dosage to 1000mg still with minimal effect and blood blood sugar levels of 300 to 400 range. As soon as I started IF with a somewhat of a light keto diet( I dropped all sugars and carbs) my blood sugar plummeted to normal levels within a month.

@@matt7iron I'm no doctor but from what I understand there is a connection between potassium and sugar and insulin. Most ppl r low, the dietary recommendations r 5000 mg a day for men. If ur type 2, ur choices for potassium r not good. Banana, orange juice, etc r too high in sugar. Go spinach, avocado and occasionally I'll get the low sodium V8 bc its basically a potassium supplement. 6800 mg in the big bottle. Type 2s really only have to adopt keto and it solves alot. Thank you, Dr. Berg. By assisting my wife as a Nutritionist in the System, I took a lot of courses in nutrition to assist her with her papers since we have small children. I began writing papers and interacting with Doctors, PHD's in Nutrition and you are the correct one. I have heard them admit that my position concerning blood sugar was correct and it needs to be corrected to the public like you are indicating but they are afraid of the Educational System and Big PHRMA. I would say to the diabetics and those who are prediabetic to go slow and then once on the correct diet, stay on that diet and you will be ok. At first, you may feel your body starting to get to the adjusting point and you may feel sleepy or low energy or even high energy too. Thank you, my friend, you are a truth-teller and I am happy we have the right to interact with persons such as you. Those guidelines were not correct when they made them concerning all those carbohydrates and they knew it but could not stop policy. They bring in the HPB medication along with Metformin and it is nothing but a common circle of keeping someone on medication. In our family two brothers one very much older (20 years) married two sisters (again one 20 years older). Diabetes on that one side of the family has killed many of them. My Mom's sister died at 41 years of age due to diabetes. The diabetes will attack females in one generation, attack males in another generation and because they could not be disciplined or taught to challenge( One of my cousin's wife attempted to challenge the physician on her husband and the Physician ordered her out of the room), so many never challenged what the physician was telling them especially on the diet, they died at an early age. I was able to reverse that situation because I have always been very disciplined and even my primary care physician complimented me in front of other research physicians because of being able to reverse the diabetic stance in my body. Keep telling the truth. It will save lives and also allow persons to have a better quality of life too. God Bless Always !

My heart sinked. I thought I heard him wrong. He said I'll always be on tge meds. After watchong this video, I have hope and for the first time sibce then I xan see the light and a happy future with my family. My A1C is 10.5. My glucose levels are in the 200-399. They used to be in the 400-525 for the first week of diagnosed. I'm starting the intermittent and KETO diet today. Current wight is 168lbs. I will update in 1 month. I don't need luck.

But balance in the key. Even if you eat high protein, it can worsen your insulin resistance. Glycemic load calculations can help us to consume low amounts of chocolates/sweets every day. Insulin response depends on how much sugar we consume regardless of whether we consume complex carbs or refined sugar. Complex carbs like beans also cannot be consumed in large amounts.

I want to cry. I’ve been Type 2 for 20 years (I am about to turn 43). Ive been morbidly obesemy entire adult live, and I have PCOS as well as fibromyalgia, and possibly lupus. I’ve been on insulin for 10 years. I was losing control on my glucose numbers, needing more and more medication. A year ago I was requiring the top dosage of Janumet twice a day; as 80 Units of Lantus each night along with 3 doses of 60units of Novorapid per day. I went on a plant based (not entirely vegan) diet, and made real progress. There was a traumatic death in my family and I fell of the wagon. No doctor ever suggested more than losing wait and not eating anything with carbs or fat. Even when I ate almost nothing, my numbers spiked. Over the past year I have lost 26kgs (I’m 5ft 2inches). But my numbers are no lower. The biggest change I made was secretly going off insulin in March of this year. I’m eating much less, but my Dr is a pro-Atkins/Paleo and thinks I should never eat fruit. But fruit didn’t make me fat. What made me fat was my childhood of 80’s bread and “meat and 3 veg” diet. And possibly...insulin? Which I’ve asked 3 GPS and 2 diabetic nurses. And all have scoffed and told me that there was no way that insulin had caused me to lose weight. I feel defeated and honestly, betrayed by doctors. 😢

Honestly I never read the label. After 15 yrs as Type 1 and bringing my numbers down by conrolling with insulin and then getting fatter by the day, my dietictian says "Insulin is the fat storing hormone ya know. But your numbers look great!" WT? I also tried fasting and after a week my blood sugars raised had to take insulin to control, I thought I was breaking the fast by taking more insulin ( just storing more fat), so I gave up. Was I wrong? What to do?

Dr. Berg, I can't thank you enough for helping me find the solution to my weight problem and my type 2 diabetes. Two years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when my sugar read 350+. Which wound up producing a 12.7 A1C. I was put on the maximum amount of Metformin and an after eating medication that I can't think of right now to get my sugar under control. I was also directed to go on a high fiber, high protein diet. I found it impossible to stick with the diet because I was hungry all the time. Since discovering your videos my life is changing for the better. I started going on KETO about 2 months ago and over the past two weeks I have gotten down to one meal per day. I'm down 32 pounds have much more energy, no longer ravenous and I haven't taken any diabetes medicine in close to six months and since going on KETO my morning sugar is consistently in the 70's to mid 80's. I'm 6 feet tall , I'm 52 years old and I drive a truck for a living. I started at 350, and am now down below 318 with a goal of eventually reaching 200 -220. Again many thanks and GOD bless you!!!

My goal was to get off insulin. I was taking 5 to 6 injections a day for over 2 years now... Eating a moderate omnivore diets. Insulin dosing keep increasing over time as well since my diagnosis and even with insulin I wasn't managed well into normal levels of glucose... I decided to go ketogenic with the goal of controlling my diabetes first and if I got weightloss as a benefit that would be great too. But 1st goal is to get off insulin because insulin makes it harder and harder to fight diabetes. Extra insulin insures you will be always storing fat no matter what you eat--- so why the hell am I injecting this stuff? By the way, high sugar does not cause diabetes, high sugar is a symptom of diabetes. What causes diabetes is high insulin... YES HIGH INSULIN!!! If you always secrete too much insulin in response to carbs and sugar this results in insulin resistance and undetected possibly for a decade or more it leads into diabetes. You go to the doctor. He sticks your finger and says well blood sugars look perfectly normal... But what he doesn't know-- is that you secrete 2 to 3 times as much insulin as a normal person to keep your sugars at a normal level. This is type 2 diabetes slowly eating away at you without knowing it. The darn doctors don't do a fast insulin check to see if you are abnormally high with those levels... Okay, 5 weeks into a ketogenic diet and I haven't taken an insulin injection since starting. Glucose levels are much more normal and I average a 118. Prior with insulin I was averaging a 150-170 with dips as low as 50 and swings above 300. With ketogenic diet I dip to 95 and swing as high as 150 (usually from ingesting unknown carbs or taking readings to close post of a meal). I couldn't be happier with how my diabetes is moving into remission. The weight loss didn't start out to well, because I was still eating a high calorie diet with the fat consumption. 2500 to 3000 calories-- but I still lost a 1lb+ a week at that rate. After 4th week, I didn't have the urge to eat as much--- the little fat I was eating and protein was keeping me very happy so calories have moved into 1500 to 1700 range currently. My resting MBR is 2,200 and if I eat 1500 calories that creates a 700 calories deficit per day which means I ought to lose about 2 lbs a week this way while not feeling hungry, while controlling blood sugar, etc... I'm very happy with this... 10 to 12 lbs a month and in 6 months I'll be a good healthy weight on my 6 ' frame. But like I said-- -health first!!! I must keep the insulin low, and sugars low. That must be the priority and the weight will come off slowly yet fast enough... on my keto approach I started with 75% Fat; 20% protein; and 5% carbs on 2500 to 3000 calories for nearly 4 week. I then shifted to 65% fat, to 30% protein; and 5% carbs.. at 1500 to 1700 calories... (I'm fuller, still low carb, just letting in more protein versus fat). The higher fat initially helped me get into ketosis quickly, and adapted to burning fat quickly as well for energy. I can honestly say, I'm never tired on this eating methodology as my body will burn it's own fat if I'm not eating it. Fasting is important too. I mean intermittent fasting. Stop snacking between meals as you need to give your body time to rest from working on ingested foods. Instead leave time between meals so that your body goes to its own fat stores to get it's energy. If you don't snack, between meals most of your day is a fasting day and that's goodness... If you think about it, that's how it used to be. Eat breakfast at 6am, fast 5 hours for lunch, eat lunch at 12:00 fast 6hrs ; eat dinner at 6PM and fast until breakfast (or BREAK FAST) or12 hours. This means you are fasting 5+6+12 or 23 hours subtract out digestion at 2 hrs post meal x3 for 6 hours and you are essentially fasting 17 hours out of a 24 hour day... Now, I'm planning on adding true water only fasting days to my program. Everything I've read state this is extremely beneficial to our bodies. So I'm going to likely pick alternate fasting days here soon. Monday's no eating, Wednesdays no eating, Saturday no eating all other days stay on ketogenic eating style. There is one man that was clinically followed that did the longest fast ever recorded and observed by science. A man weighing over 500lbs fasted on water for 383 days without any ill effects whatsoever. He lost 276lbs and 5 years post of his fast he is 190lbs to date. All lab tests showed were constant improvements with respect to all blood and urine tests... As a man experiencing this diet as a diabetic --I can only encourage others to listed to Dr. Berg and others telling you these are clinically proven to help you and even more so than the darn drugs... Get off those things and start to eat to live....

Michael G You sir, know what you are talking about. Finally someone actually understands diabetes type 2 and understands the eating plan to correct and reverse it. I did the exact same thing you did. I'm on a Ketogenic diet intermittently fasting 24hrs two days a week. This has stabilized my blood sugars and reversed my diabetes. Insulin is the REAL issue of type 2. There is too much of it circulating in the blood and the body starts ignoring it. This increases blood glucose levels creating systemic inflammation which causes all of the dreaded outcomes of type 2...heart disease, kidney failure, eye problems, amputation etc.

Learned so many things the hard way over the last 18 months. Three bouts of COVID, plus my vision being negatively affected---part of it from being sick 3 times in just 17 months, mostly of it from being very discouraged and depressed, so reverted to eating such things as rice and potatoes again (Recently diagnosed as T2D). Massive 50 pound weight gain after successfully losing 60 pounds (now have to lose at least 130 pounds). My car gave out on me at the same time I had the second bout of COVID, so everything was overwhelming, and I reacted in the worst way for my health. Now I've given up ALL forms of sugar, using only allulose and/or monk fruit for sweeteners. Not losing much weight, even though I'm OMAD, 20:4, but not gaining, either. I'm also almost 70, plus now have a challenge with vision, which is more age-related presbyopia, I do believe (finding out in two days). All I can say more is, I sure wish I'd known all this 45 years ago, and had taken corrective action---but back then, of course, absolutely nothing was available to the general public in regard to going low carb, high(er) fat, cut out the sugars.

Wow another honest caring Dr! Thank you Dr. Berg, I am a type one diabetic for 22 years following Dr. Bernstein diet and methods and my HbA1C drop from 7.8 to 4.9 in 3 months. I lost 20 lbs in that time. My insulin requirement drop nearly 80% only taking 2 small basal doses with 3 bolus for my 3 meals. I only eat 25g of carbs a day but only vegetables and non sweet fruit for vitamins and minerals. GI 10-15. Its incredible that most doctors recommend such high carb diets. My old ADA diet was 40g of carbs a meal and huge amounts of insulin. BG ranged from 350 to 30 after meals. Now my BG is at a steady 85 mg/dl like non diabetic. My usual highs are up to 110 and my lows at 65. Practically cure my diabetes with my own and small insulin doses.

When I think about how I got to being type 2 diabetic, its shocking! My own habbits were the most distructive, since my love of sugar since childhood, and then lots of baking desserts after I became an adult, always was very thin until this caught up with me! I was oblivious to foods affects on my health. I just ate whatever I felt like since I was a kid. By the time I was 38 I was told I was borderline diabetic, then at age 50, I was diagnosed full blown type 2. They said the numbers changed on what used to be considered normal range. 🙀 oh my gosh I thought, what now? Plus a stomach hernia surgery at 47. So when I think of all the other influences that also led me down the not so perfect path, was weight watchers. I went to those meetings many years ago, but looking backwards into the looking glass, lol those old meetings use to tell us to eat whole wheat bread, and rice, and potatoes, and even small amounts of flour for cooking, and pasta. Lots of it. Basically, those meetings mainly said remove refined sugars. So no wonder weight lose did not happen. At least not enough to do any good. Iam now older, but its never too late to care about your health! Iam just starting keto dieting, into my 3rd week. I hope to stay on track with thing! 😂 My glucose number after a meal, now stays around 100, which beats 250 lolol I used to think I could eat sweets or whatever I felt like as long as I kept the calories around 500 a day. Well wrong! M n Ms arent exactly counting since they are loaded with sugar, so fitting stuff like that into my calories still was not keeping insulin resistance down. If anything it drove it up! Iam a tad bit late, but better late than never! 😂😂😂

@@Drberg Hi Dr Berg. Please do a video on autoimmune response in type 1 diabetics treated with a ketogenic diet. I've been looking for a specific video on this in your playlist, but haven't found one, though you might have touched on the type 1 in some of your others - still going through many and learning. I'm asking because the subject has come up in a friend's share on fb, and the belief that there is no way to beat the condition without lifetime insulin treatments.

I have read that the best way to run a business, it to look for a NEED, and then provide a service to care for that need. They go a step further. They create the need with the diet, and then keep it going! Thank you, Dr. Berg, for all of your hard work! This video was great!

I am a Diabetic Type 1 and I have an important question regarding intermittent fasting and keto diet, I would love an answer to this. I really would like to do IF and keto, but my question is: even reducing a lot insulin injections, or not doing them at all, for several reasons it is frequent, especially in very active persons like me that do a lot of endurance excercise, to have low blood sugar (even not doing any insulin at all because we don't produce glucagone either). When this happens the only thing to do to rise sugar levels in the blood is to eat sugar (or carbohydrates, but sugar act more fast), so my question is: since this happens pretty much every other day (even with no injections at all) how can I join keto and IF? I mean, eating sugar will interrupt IF (no big deal) but especially kick me out of keto. Is it possible to rise blood sugar quickly with any fat keto food source?

I've been low carb since Sept. /23 when diagnosed w Diabetes (6.6); Dec. /23 (6.1); Jan. 10/24 (5.8) In Dec. my dr. was so pissed off bc I wouldn't go on Metformin. I told her I was going to reverse my diabetes. She was really upset w me. She told me I was putting too much stress on myself. OMG. Now in Jan. the Dr. says I can't go any lower bc of my pancreas - whatever that means. I've not rec'd one positive comment from her. I told her my goal is 5.0. I will continue to eat mostly plant based and see what happens. If I can avoid drugs I will. I've reduced BP med and my BP is slowly falling. I've got about 50 lbs to lose and lost 20 so far but I'm determined I'll do it. Why do Dr. push so damn many pills - so frustrating!
