"Wiseguy" had a lot of stories, which is why Scorsese left out certain crucial plot points. "Goodfellas" is crazy, but it doesn't even come close to hitting the bottom of the rabbit hole. Furthermore, the facts that Scorsese left out of the picture may have been their own feature.

Henry was a nobody but for me and the feds he was a privileged one because he started hanging on with Paul Vario a captain of the Luchesse family and his crew he made errands for them then was a mechanic and because Henry Italian Sicilian mother Carmela was from the same Sicilian towns the Varios Paulie considered him almost as family and took Henry with him everywhere and as result he saw and heard many things he knew the family founder Tommy Luchesse several times, he saw Carlo Gambino and Joe Bonnano from afar of course and his own words "Gangsters were seen everywhere I saw the whole world" all of this since he was 12 until he left this "life" in 1980 at 37 after 25 years inside that circle He didn't need to be a made man he more than enough he was nobody in a good position and the Feds knew it

As someone who knew Tommy Desimones sister, according to her the reason why Tommy was such a lose cannon was due to the fact he had a brother and an uncle in the mob who were killed because they were suspected informers. To prove to others he wasn’t like them Tommy would go overboard with violence to show others he was not like them. Once he established that persona it was hard to turn it off. Even his own family was afraid of him.

7:28 the most important thing you said was his height. It’s an egregious cast choice and I really can’t be convinced otherwise. Joe’s portrayed WAS aggressive but it’s bc we have no benchmark. It feels like little man’s syndrome. That’s not the depiction in historical literature of the mobster. He was imposing bc of his enormous 76 inch frame. The fact that he had a weapon was irrelevant at that point. And that’s kind of the idea. Joe doesn’t seem intimidating AT ALL without a weapon. He’s just a loose cannon. He also ruins the times ppl actually choose to stand up to him. Billy Batts chirping him is an entirely different story. In the movie it feels like he’s jawing a small kid still. But you have to remember… Tommy is an absolute unit at this point. He was small when billy saw him before having spent 15 years in jail. This matters. Billy was a made man. But one could think that he’s talking shit bc Tommy is small regardless of his status. The reference of spit shine plays into this. That’s a flaw of the movie. Now imagine a violent and murderous mobster who is a full on loose cannon with the body frame of Jon Jones.this portrays effectively how off limits made guys are. Bc Tommy could end billy NO problem with his bare hands for FAR less. You get the sense billy was kinda asking for it bc it doesn’t come across how unbelievably brazen this is. In fact when you break it down, most of the movie dynamics shift when you account for the danger and fear of a more imposing portrayal of Tommy. I never ever got the sense ppl were afraid of Tommy in the movie including hill. And I think it’s one of the few mistakes Martin makes. We’ll never know how well Joe compensated but it’s good reason why it wasn’t broadcasted in any physical way really that Joe was much smaller than the rest of the actors. Also while I’m sure tommy did mrder others, there’s no records of them officially. To be honest, I never bought the spider story reading Wiseguys for all the above reasons. That scene never felt compelling bc it was again little man’s syndrome. Spider looks bigger than tommy haha without the weapon , you had the feeling the kid might actually have a change. In real life, Tommy would have removed his head clean off his body in one punch haha There’s NO way he would tell him any variation of go fck yourself. He’s asking for the beating off a lifetime. Whereas the movie makes Tommy look like a wild card hair trigger but his real danger was himself not so much the gun.

The movie is an adaptation of Nick Pileggi's true-crime "Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family", and Henry Hill is the centerpiece of the book. Naturally Hill could not ever admit to participating in a murder, so in the movie he is portrayed as a peacemaker of sorts, or at least the guy trying to talk other guys out of committing murder. Reading the book gives you a non-whitewashed look at who Hill was (he does not, of course, even in the book's quotes from him, admit to murder).

You consider Goodfellas to be relatable? The very reason I don't like Goodfellas, or most of Scorsese's films is because I cannot relate to the protagonists at all. They seem to be motivated by their own self gain to the point where they will exploit the vulerabilities of honest people without hesitation for profit. I can't relate to that, even if there were no crime involved.

You seem a little self-absorbed. Sounds like you're saying you don't like these movies because you don't see yourself in them.

Henry Hill used to call the Howard Stern show, drunk everytime he'd fall off the wagon, and kinda spill his guts...then "Paulie" would call in EVERYTIME and HARASS the 💩 out of him

Played by the late Ray Leyota? This is a 90s film, he wasn’t old when he played this role 😂 he died like 20/30 years later

when you use the term the "late" Ray Liotta it doesn't mean they were old then it just means they are dead now

"Played by stunner Lorraine Brocco?" Stunner? That's a stretch dude.

Great thing about this story is most people don’t know what really happened so Scorsese had the freedom to add and take out things for effect.‘I’ve heard Other monsters talk about Hill and explained he was much different the. He came across in the movie. In real life they said he was a pathetic character, had problems with drugs and alcohol and was nothing like Ray Liotta. Great cast but very miscast if you were trying to be it realistic. Liotta was much better looking then Hill but he was not as miscast as DeNiro and Peace. DeNiro was supposed to be a good deal older then both Hill and a Tommy but Pesce is around DeNiro age while Liotta is about 15 years younger.

Street smarts and charm??
@buckfifty37

These people succeeding had nothing to do with street smarts or grit. Unless by grit you mean the willingness to carry out extreme violence on their own and outsiders alike. So other gangsters and regular civilians were subject to their violent tactics. Everything is secondary to the threat of force and that is how organized crime is successful.

Nicholas Pileggi talked about this in the book WiseGuy. These guys aren't geniuses or hard workers what sets them apart is the willingness to commit violence to murder someone at the drop of a hat. That is where their power comes from. And in the Godfather , which is fiction of course , the Carlo character talks about that. He's not necessarily scared of Sonny and thinks he could probley physically take him but Sonny would and could murder him in the street.

As far as Henry in the military, I have a news flash for ALL of you... for a LONG, LONG time, the military was taking just about ANYBODY. Thieves, crooks, drunks, addicts, morons, wife and child beaters, you name it. There were a LOT of guys that didn't give a shit about anything but themselves. As far as Henry Hill goes, as time goes by, I am beginning to think that putting Ray Liotta in that role really was putting a silk hat on a pig. Not only was Henry Hill not loyal, he was totally caught up in number one. I honestly don't think he was that bright, either.

Henry was loyal to Paul Vario and crew and partners for 25 years In spite of his many flaws Henry was loyal until the killings started after the Lufthansa heist and everything started to unravel the killing started and it unnerved him and he saw people who ho were his friends killed.or dissapearing never to be seen again and he began to question everything and his drug use worsened around this time and then he was arrested for drug traffik and heard that Jimmy found him untrustworthy and feared that he would flip and talk and Jimmy then wanted him to go to Florida to kill someone with Stabile a guy he knew could not abide him Henry knew he was a dead man and even Vario had turned his back on him of his drug charges and when knewPaulie had betrayed him sleeping with his wife Karen of course his loyalty to this scum died and if he became disloyal what did you expect? He did what he had to do he betrayed them all
