What you need to know about owning a chopper! Best delivery of a bike EVER!

Why did the chopper market crash? I believe it was lack of understanding on how to maintain them! Along with the ridiculous over-pricing didn’t help either.
In this video I show you the “need to know” common maintenance items of a custom motorcycle. I came up with this idea as I was selling my chopper to an out of state customer. I wanted the next mechanic to not have to work so hard on learning the features of the bike. Afterwards I started thinking what a fantastic idea dealers could do when delivering a bike. Make a video, throw it on a flash drive and give the buyer!
If you own or are thinking about buying a chopper, then this video is for you. Harley Owners will find value in it as well.

Here is what I use for antiseize. I love its aerosol. Nice to work with. I've taken off wheels years later and thousands of road miles and its still on the shaft even after I personally have driven through pouring rainstorms. amzn.to/32MvCkF

Hello Jyme...finally a comment nice to hear after the few...LOL Only thing "stock" on this bike was the original engine cases that were given to me and the grips and switches I got off ebay...as much as this maybe didn't fit your tastes, I loved the build, the experiences and time with this bike...This was the first one I did all the machining myself and only farmed out the paint. 107" motor was built before there were "kits". Mounted a Twin Cam in a EVO based frame and as with any build a million other changes/mods only the builder would see.

Nice to see a video of a guy that actually knows wtf he's talking about. Very few and far between. Although I don't personally care for the overall look of this particular bike, I've gotta say, you have a lot of nice features on there for sure. As far as the 'Sprake' goes, was that something you had to have machined or were you able to buy it like that? Pretty cool idea.

I know I might be a little late here but, one thing I would like to share is in regard to S &S ez start cams. I never had experienced the issues you did. I had mine installed on a EFI touring model and never saw the need to readjust the idle speed with my 551's. Secondly, I am a fairly new subscriber to this channel. I would like to see a lesson on rear wheel alignment. I have been through a tough experience to say the least. Also how about suspension set up and what rake and trail is and how effects handling...
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 6 лет назад
Harleyforever20 As a car guy I chuckled at “turn the idle up” Because on my summer car for years it’s been eating alternator belts. It’ll eat 3 in 3 months. I’ve done tons of research, other folks having the same problem too. One day while screwing around I checked my idle speed. It was like 550-600, when it should be like 850. I turned the idle up and the half chewed belt has been doin fine for the last 2yrs. Same with the little Briggs air cooled engines, low idle isn’t cool , the crank dipper can’t splash enough oil to keep em lubed.

I would agree, the market crashed on them because they are a pain to work and hard to find someone willing to work on them. Oil/Trans drains are in the worst hidden spots, it's hard to order even something simple like brake pads. I own a custom chopper and while most of it is universal with Harley, a lot of it isn't. I'm sure the new owner will appreciate this video. Iron Horse put out a good owners manual on their bikes and big dog too. If anyone reading this is thinking of purchasing a custom chopper, do your research on if you can get support/parts for it easily. 30-40k choppers are now going for 10k or less. I've seen good ones with S&S motors going for 7k even!

Cool video. My opinion on the chopper market is that it wasn't really a Chopper Market crash as much as a Market Crash. When the Market crashed, people stopped by 40,000 custom bikes. These chopper companies had dozens of bike in hundreds of dealers. Dealer after dealer was going out of business, and with so many bikes out there (million and millions in inventory) they were force to declare bankruptcy.

I have a 82 FLU with a rigid mounted engine. I check the bike from front to back once a week and still have had my front exhaust pipe , rear brake caliper, handle bars, seat, battery holding strap, throttle assembly come loose because fasteners backed themselves off. I always recommend carrying a toolkit that will save the day on a regular basis.

Red Loctite, locking fasteners and safety wire are your friends. I have Shovels too. Harley handlebar clamps don't positively control the handlebars so after trying everything else over the years I switched to stainless bars with welded risers, and on one set I tack welded the bars at my preferred angle to Biltwell stainless risers. The tacks are invisible (being inboard on the bottom part of the riser) and will shear in a crash. No more bar issues and I run 14 and 16" apes. Of course I carry tools but I don't need them often. You can get tabbed lock washers for your exhaust pipe bolts.

The Recession killed the "factory chop" market. The old farts who bought them during the "factory Harley" shortage spent enough to support a variety of companies, some of which assembled questionable shit (Big Bear neck weld failures come to mind!). When the Recession destroyed their 401Ks they sold their toys, and now they are too old to ride. BTW I always check the alternator plug connection on Harleys/clones since it frequently fills with oil and burns/arcs the contacts. Easy to fix but most folks forget to check, and I ALWAYS do a cold compression test before parting with money.

Beautiful BIKE! I do hope you can help me out, thinking about buying a Bourget Black Jack used 2003, they are $8-$9,000 in flawless condition with 4- 8,000 miles. I think they are much cooler that the used sportster I could buy with that money. However I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I'm willing to learn and work on it. Any advice? Am I put pf my league, or could a average Joe like me own and operate a nice clean used chopper with little to No worries? I think they are timeless and works of art, and it would be amazing to own one. Thanks again in advance for your time and this great VIDEO! A+.
@obfuscated3090
@obfuscated3090 6 лет назад
STUDY them thoroughly so you know more than the name. A lot of bikes weren't built using full S&S engines so when you see one over the cases. You can contact S&S with the engine serial and they'll be able to tell you if the cases were from a complete engine or pieced together. If you aren't a mechanic, learn. HDs are easy to work on and though those use aftermarket drivetrains the closest HD factory service manual and parts book will serve you well. The clone (h)arleys are easy to work on like the originals Don't make one your only machine. Become your own chopper encyclopedia. There are no shortcuts. Also remember big inch engines with high compression aren't as durable as stock displacement stock compression machines. You can of course drop the compression at next top end overhaul.

Do not buy if you don't know about bikes or their mechanics. Build your own and learn, I know too many who bought and knew nothing, money burning a hole in their pocket. If you have to ask here then you don't need the bike, you should be mature enough to know what you want and do it no matter what any one says

Balance the engine to avoid vibration damage
@How2Wrench
@How2Wrench 4 года назад
Nice...I'd like to add some thoughts. You cannot balance a v-twin that is not 90 deg throughout the entire RPM range. You have to pick rpm window. There is a method to reduce vibrations and near perfectly balance these non 90 deg twins with a process called balance factor (I believe thats the term, its been years since I saw it done at S&S Factory Training center). The process add or removes weight to "balance" at a targeted RPM range. The manufacture does this at the cruise RPM. To see this first hand, look at the mirrors of a HD V-twin and watch how much they shake. As you increase the RPM, the mirrors will actually stop shaking and them with more RPM they will move out of the balance factor rpm and start shaking again. Racers for example will put their "balance" at max RPM as thats were they spend their time. I'm going to add this comment for our upcoming Q&A session! We sure love you taking the time to comment. You really don't have to be quite so fussy either, do it right the first time, I hate it when some one who knows nothing about bikes at all wants to buy a chop, they want to look cool and have a Harley sound, that's it! When something goes wrong they want to know what to do, some want to learn but too many don't even now.
