stancedchannel yeah but that's restrictive and makes no sense because that power plant has a lot of benefits but it's locked away on the top of the range models or as a fleet vehicle. Ford should maybe rethink the position of that particular product trim to make it more accessible to the masses because that engine is so good .

This isn't a robust and economical little engine that Ford wants going to the mainstream consumer, it's made cheaply, with a rear mounted belt-drive HPFP and has been ripped out of a Land Rover. In reality, it's just a marketing stunt. You want this engine.

I am getting 25.6 mpg town and highway. 27.1 from Sacramento to downtown L A. Also uses about 5 gallons of DEF (emissions adaptive in separate tank) every 6000 miles. Super Crew fully loaded 4x4 Lariat. I love it!

I missed these kind of reviews! 😊 I started watching your channel way back when when you did one on a Fiesta Glad to see more! Idk if I would get the mini Powerstroke as it would take about 150,000 Miles to get a return on the fuel mileage, but I commend Ford for offering it. I’m sure for some people it will be ideal. It’s a good engine that’s been used to a few years in Land Rovers (And no matter what engine you get in an F-150, it is a damn nice truck!) Take care!

Just bought the 2018 F 150 platinum with the 3.5 ecoboost on friday. Went to pick it up and it was around 800 km (500 miles) trip in a nice mix of traffic, from very heavy to almost none. Cruise control used when I had the chance at our legal speed limit (60-65mph) and I was plesantly surprised that the average fuel use was lower than I had expected due to the traffic. I averaged 12 liters per 100km or 19.6mpg or there about.. This included an hour or two of very heavy slow going traffic with lots of idle time, highway and city driving. So lots of spirited "road rage" overtaking going on as well hehe. I also have the truck on some 35" and not the stock 33" tires. Also... holy crap the comfort.. ooooooh the comfort! Its like a cozy sofa on wheels!!

Really pretty truck and the fuel mileage will improve, I drive a 4X4 2016 Ram 1500 ECO Diesel and I average 22 mpg steady around town here in Central Texas, also have taken three trips to California and averaged 28 mpg and above. If you plan on traveling a Diesel is worth the investment.

ricky safer And Ram puts there Ecodiesel in the lowest level truck they offer.... 5 model years ago. I’ve always been a ford guy. My 15 ecoboost made me think about the other side. My Ecodiesel gets 32 mpg’s on the highway, and 26-27 daily driving. Ford has a long way to go.

I went from a 15' 5.0L to this new 3.0L Diesel and do not regret it one bit. Fuel economy is far better especially if you have over sized rim/tires like I do. There is virtually no L/100K difference from stock(275/55/20) to 305/60/20. My 5.0L felt the difference, went from 12.5 l/100k over 14. My 3.0 gets 10.5 average with the big boots. Plus when I pull the trailer(5000lbs) every other weekend for racing my wallet doesn't get hit nearly as hard as with the 5.0L. For me more money up front was a no brainer since this thing pays me back over the long run. The only thing I miss from the 5.0L is the rumble, nothing sounds like a V-8 but its a small sacrifice.

Thank you for your honest and educated review. I love the F-150 and am planning on buying one in the coming years as my family grows. The genesis of my logic into potentially buying the diesel option is because I would like to have it for over 15-20 years...and diesels are built for that longevity in terms of mileage. Am I incorrect? Thanks for the great video!

Nice addition to already rich engine lineup in the F150 i guess. The reason why You pick a Turbo Diesel engine, at least here in Europe is the good MPG, especially when you make a lot of mileage yearly and its ability to endure high mileages. It pays off in some cases basically. Also from a guy who owned couple of them, I just love the dynamic characteristics of diesel, that you don't have to beg it to drive, it just moves :) from the very low of the RPM scale. Here where I live diesel fuel is even cheaper than regular gasoline so the engine choice between diesel and gasoline is still relevant. Nice video Mike ! All the best to You

This review by you Mike is definitely "Best in Class". Thanks for sharing your thoughts on if a diesel is necessary or viable in a light duty truck like the F-150 and worth the 3k option. I can't wait for the diesel in the 2019 Silverado. I thought the truck was black when I seen it in on your Instagram. In my honest opinion the facelift on the F-150 makes them the best looking Ford truck aside from the new Raptor that I have seen. It is a bummer that you can only get the Baby Powerstroke in the King Ranches, Platinums, and Lariats. Fuel economy and low end torque for towing up and down mountains are the only advantages for the 3.0L Powerstroke vs the 3.5L EB (which in those trims is most likely standard.)

Great review, I honestly believe they're not going to sell many of these engines until they offer it in the xl or xlt trim levels and most level headed people wont buy one until Ford has had them out for a while and gotten rid of any major flaws that may arise. 6.0l 6.4l for example. Offering a more fuel efficient engine wont do anybody any good if they cant afford the truck as a whole. Extremely interesting film though.

Beautiful truck, but how do the numbers equal out the extra $3000 to get the Diesel 3.0. Plus add the extra cost of doing the service and maintenance. Didn't notice if it had the blue-def system but that costs extra to maintain too. I'll just keep my Lariat Limited 6.2 gas.

I drive on average 45,000-50,000 miles a year and tow up to 3 snowmobiles in the winter. Thinking the better mpg, the towing capabilities, the 100k motor warranty over the EcoBoost 60k, and hopeful durability should fit my big miles and towing. Thoughts?

For the way I use my truck, this makes sense. When I do a business trip (two to three times a month) I run 10 hours minimum, all hot, three to five days, average 1600 miles, gotta have 4wd, 8 ft. bed, cruise and air. I could enjoy the legendary diesel reliability ,but this is targeted at soccer moms and grocery getters. Running cold miles like that you just as well put targets on the grille where each bank of cylinders is and draw down on them with your six shooter and see how many cylinders you can lay waste to with each shot. Maybe if injectors were free and you could replace them yourself from the drivers seat it might make sense the way most people use their personal transportation equipment.

I had a 5.0 2018 loved the truck great power but when pulled my 19 ft ranger boat my mileage fell from 23.5 to as low as 15 mpg this 2019 3.0 diesel goes from 25 to 23.5 pulling it at highway speed of 65 mph I love the power of it its is a great engine

Greg B Ford say that the eco boost will out pull the 5.0 but it doesn’t get as good fuel mileage as the 5.0 pulling I prefer a V8 over V6 my friends have the eco boost and pulling gas mileage goes way down in to 5 and 6 mpg Me personally prefer a V8 in the gas engine but I am a old school guy

I have had very good luck and no problems with my 2015 ecodiesel other than maintenance cost. I'm sure the little power stroke and ecodiesel are not that different. The small diesel fits my needs and gets good mileage. We went from NH to FL and back with four people and all of our gear and averaged 29mpg. I'm sure the Ford is the same or better.

How do you get dealerships to let you see their cars even if your not buying, I’m interested in reviewing some cars for my RU-vid channel but I don’t know if any car dealership will let me. Any advice?

Had they put this engine on the new ranger raptor instead of that tiny 2.0 bi-turbo, it could have been a smash hit :'l and I would buy one in a heartbeat

I get 19mpg commuting to work in traffic and 23mpg (with 3 x dirt bikes in the back) on highway with the 2.7L ecoboost in my xlt. I do love diesels but not worth the extra money over gas unless you are doing crazy milage. My dream is the 2.7 with the 36Gl tank!

Do you know the MPG of the 3.5L Ecoboost V-6 and the Horsepower?

Mike good review but that Diesel in the end will hold its value better and that engine will easily last twice as long as the ecoboost...call me old fashion but trucks should have V8 or Diesels.

I also hate when guys buy diesels and NEVER tow anything. You’re literally not getting your moneys worth if you never do what the truck was built to do

Brien Berglund agreed 4cyl turbo belong in my GTI and V8 belong in my RAM

Scotty W agreed if you buy a 3/4 or 1ton truck (better use for what it was made for) but if your buying a 1/2ton or midsize diesel those get great mileage 30+ mpg good reason to buy especially for highway driving...4cyl or 6cyl turbo trucks have to work so hard to move the truck and they really don’t get that much better gas mileage then modern V8 trucks

For towing get the diesel.

Does it have longer mileage than EcoBoost or Coyote V8 because it's a diesel?
@catfishakaAMC

Mike is totally right about this being a numbers game. How long will you keep the vehicle? How many miles will you put on it? What will your towing MPG be? What will it be worth at trade in time? If you were already buying a lariat anyway, the 3k option isn't that big of a deal, and the fuel savings will equalize at 75k miles or so, give or take. I think Ford added this option because they heard GM was adding a diesel to it's new truck lineup. The marketing department couldn't bear to let GM have something they couldn't offer.
