Hoss Cartwright Exactly..the fact that they aren’t offering it to everybody makes me believe they aren’t that confident in it. I currently have a 2.7 ecoboost f150 and i love driving it but it’s a complete pile. Throttle body problems,brake problems,stalling problems,body is made of recycled Coors light cans and dents if you stare at it to long.Only 10600 miles on it so far.

This engine really only makes sense for people that spend hours upon hours in their truck, so maybe that's why Ford is offering it in the higher more comfortable trim levels? And why do i say that? You have to spend hours and hours and thousands and thousands of miles in this truck to justify the cost: www.fordf150blog.com/cost-of-ownership-2-7-3-5-ecoboost-vs-3-0-powerstroke/

The diesel 4X4 would take over 190k miles to pay for itself over the 5.0L V8 given that that engine recommends 87 octane fuel. Even the 2.7L and the 3.5L ecoboost require only 87 octane, the 3.5L recommends 93 for towing, but the typical half ton buyer is not doing all their mileage towing - MAYBE 5%. Sure, in 2WD form, this engine makes sense, but in 4WD I think they fell too short on fuel economy to justify the price and performance difference.

Not a very good truck for towing in my opinion. The problem with all light duty trucks is payload. If you tow 11,000 pounds and your trailer is properly balanced you are using 1100 pound of payload capacity from the load on your hitch. Add to that the driver, fuel, etc, you are pretty much at your payload limit. Thats why I had to go to a heavy duty truck to pull my 11,000 pound trailer. My F150 was right at the limit with just me in it, so taking my family with me in the same vehicle I was technically over the payload limit.

Why you shouldn't buy one: -Less horsepower than EcoBoost -Less torque than EcoBoost -More expensive than EcoBoost -More expensive to maintain than EcoBoost -More problematic over time compared to EcoBoost -Only available in the over-priced higher trim levels -Very little difference in MPG compared to EcoBoost -Diesel fuel is more expensive in most places than gasoline -Less payload and towing capacity than EcoBoost

It's not just ford, companies tend to put the new engine everyone wants in the trim level no one wants to pay for to force people to buy the expensive trim. Look at the previous generation Ford f150s, you needed to get the platinum our limited to get the 6.2 v8, same with the Nissan titan diesels, and most other cars with sought after engines. Edit: also companies won't put up with that garbage so they can't do the trim level thing to them. And really how much do you thing your saving in mpg by spending 40k more on a truck that gets 3-5 mpg better or whatever it is. How long will it take you to break even on the extra 40k?
@donkehmcdonkey3703
@donkehmcdonkey3703 6 лет назад
Hugh Janus Apparently theyve whacked them in the higher trims for now as there is are limited 3.0s available from production, I believe Jag/LR gets first dibs on them. Further down the line I'd expect to see the more basic diesel wagons available to all. That said the diesel only makes sense in places where diesel is taxed lower, and thus is the same price as gas.

I think the EPA ratings are based on this engine only showing up in high trim levels on the normal consumer side. The ecodiesel is in all but Sport and Rebel trim levels and thus it’s rating is derived from lower models. I think the 25 hwy will be a very modest rating for the 4x4 unlike the highway ratings on ecoboost.
@warrior5223
@warrior5223 6 лет назад
3.5 ecoboost still has more torque and more horsepower and can tow more and more payload. And with the 10 speed and 4x4 gets almost the exact same gas mileage.

Honestly there is no positive points for this truck compared to the ecoboost. Why buy this over ecoboost? It made sense for ram to have their diesel half ton since their v8 and v6 trucks are not as efficient, but ecoboost f150s are already pretty efficient.
@andrewt9204
@andrewt9204 6 лет назад
True! And, if the turbos do happen to go out after 300k on my 2.7, it's still cheaper to replace those two times vs the up front cost difference of the diesel. It's hard to justify this truck: If you do a lot of towing, the F250 PS is a much better buy both short and long term. If you only do light or a little towing, then any of the other gas options would be a better purchase. MAYBE if the f150 diesel got 30+ mpg, you could justify it as a DD with occasional towing. But that price though...

@@reed7562 how did you take someone's comment about people not caring about fuel cost on expensive vehicles and turn it into a weak, moronic flex about buying a vehicle in cash over financing? Newflash: responsible adults can get vehicles for 0% interest and that is a smarter financial decision than dumping the full price of the vehicle in cash. Talking about "too broke" to buy it outright when your foolish remark is the antithesis to what any financial advisor would recommend. People who earn good money generally aren't stupid enough to make that decision. You have a tenuous grasp on finance.

$70k+ for a King Ranch half ton? Either we entered 10% more inflation this year or they're overcharging for the diesel option. Might as well get an F250 King Ranch at that point which is around $70k before discounts and incentives...(with the 6.7)

I am in the market for something that get good enough mileage for a daily driver (goodbye 3/4 ton and up), and something that can tow 8,000 pounds across the country occasionally, a diesel half ton is ideal, I see no reason to get anything but the eco diesel now.

Can someone please explain what is diesel exhaust fluid ? Is it to decrease smog ?
@benjaminwayneb

DEF is injected into the catalytic converter to reduce NOx. NOx gases react to form smog and acid rain as well as the formation of fine particles and ground level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects..

Premium for the EcoBoost? I was surprised when I saw my 2012 Owner's Manual recommended 87 octane. I tried a few tanks of premium and saw no difference in performance nor mpg.
@Red.Hot.Chili.Beans63
@Red.Hot.Chili.Beans63 6 лет назад
Andre, I guess I have to take exception to your payback analysis. The base engine for the Lariat is the 2.7L EcoBoost therefore the diesel is a $4,000 option. Further, the manual only says that for best performance, 91 octane is required. I believe almost everyone will buy the 87 octane (Ford Powertrain Manager Paul Seredynski said "EcoBoost engines don't require premium fuel. Ford recommends that you don't go below 87, but all modern engines simply adapt to whatever fuel you put in." So the payback calculation is $4,000 plus increased maintenance costs. Also, diesel is about $0.50 a gallon more expensive that 87 octane. The bad news is a 4x4 combined mileage is 22 mpg for both the 2.7L on 87 octane and the diesel. I don't see how you pay more for the diesel fuel while getting similar mileage ever allows for a payback. The only way it'll ever make financial sense is if you're are towing or hauling heavy loads daily and the ecoboost is assumed to take a big dump in mileage while doing so. That said none of that will matter to the diesel dorks that will have to have one no matter what.... Still a great review Andre!!!!!

No worries, Chevy will offer their diesel half ton in all trim levels to everyone. So obviously ford has not learned their lesson with holding customers hostage with over bloated priced trucks jammed down the the customers throats. Taking the ranger away to try and force people to buy the f150 just pretty much sent ranger customers like myself who’s previously own 3 rangers to Toyota for Tacoma’s. Hence the reason Toyota Tacoma is now the top selling compact pick up. Keep going Ford, pretty soon, you will send yourself out of the automotive market all together. Your marketing decisions really suck, just In case you haven’t noticed.
