What's better, Triumph Bonneville T100 or the Street Triple? Since I've borrowed the baby Bonneville a number of people have asked if I will be selling my Street Triple and Buying a T100. In this video I look at the features of both bikes and compare the pros and cons for each...but what will I conclude?
I'm now on that Twitter thing! Join me @MissendenFlyer
I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-
GoPro HD Hero 4 helmet camera
GoPro Session (4) "B" Camera
Nikon D7100 DSLR for static and video shots with various lenses
Lavalier microphone and sellotape for in helmet audio - £9 from E-Bay
Power Director 8 for the PC (for video editing)
Lavalier microphone for in garage audio - £20 E-Bay
My current motorcyles are:-
Honda CRF250L
Triumph Street Triple R

As always mate a great video. You come across really well - keep up the good work! I've only ever ridden one bonny and it's a 1969 US import so can't give much input but the street triple is such a sweet little bike, sounds great and the handling would give some sportbikes a run for their money!

Thank you Finding Neutral, very kind of you to say....these new-fangled Bonnevilles are something else, you'd not recognise riding one compared to the 1969 original! Both great bikes, the Bonnie and the Street Triple...all the best - TMF

A great video. Thanks a lot from snowy Denmark. Your closing comments are just spot on. Similar words have been said under my helmet, when riding my Bonneville America. What an excellent video, being old and warty I have had many of the Meriden Bonnevilles of yesteryear. I currently have an old Thunderbird triple which I love but I am seriously considering one of the new T100. I found your presentation to be spot on.

Wonderful insight into your thoughts on both bikes; both are different animals but for those that cannot own every bike they fancy it's good to hear someone's firsthand opinions. Hi TMF, just caught up on all your T100 video reviews and some of those from other vloggers as well. Now made my mind up to chop my crf1000 in for one, just love the styling and the manoeuvrability of the T100. This has for me been the bugbear with my Honda, I just can’t get along with it’s top heavy feel when pushing it around and the same when riding in town with the wife on pillion. The reviews that you guys do make a great source of info and help and I thank you for that.

Great vid... love the 'scenery' as my son lives not far from you so reminds me of our family visits. I now have the 2014 Bonnie and the big difference from other bikes I find is that other road users seem to be much less 'intimidated' by my presence,
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes it's funny how other road users treat you isn't it - I get distinctly more respect if I'm on my GS (from car drivers) than if I'm on my Panigale - I dare say the opposite is true from other bikers though!

I feel I made the right choice with my Street Twin. I've yet to pass my test, but I've got all the bits ready to turn it into a keeper - Givi engine crash bars,TEC suspension front and back, Brembo four pots front and back, and the TEC cam to derestrict the top end. I also went for the tail tidy and replacements for those oddly mismatched levers, and I'll be getting replacement bar end mirrors relatively soonish after I pass my test.

I think if I had a Panigale in the garage, I might choose the T100 over the Stripple, if I hadn't I might be leaning towards the performance of the Street. Fun idea making this comparison over two completely different bikes.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Well it's a real dilemma I have (first world dilemma if ever there was one.....!). I'm sort of leaning that way at the moment - towards the T100 - but I feel I owe it to myself to try the new Street Triple before I make any snap decisions!! The good news is, I'm in no hurry and to me the choosing of the next bike is all part of the fun....

So, you are in the thrall of a modern Triumph classic. Contagious. I sold one of my cars last week, but the buyer, who arrived to view on a 1200GS, was more interested in wanting to know what I wanted for the Thunderbird 900 (which is not, presently at least, for sale). On the single front brake disc point, with mine I quickly got used to its limitations; so much so that I have rarely had to apply the front brake with any force in all the years I have had it.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Hey Len - great to hear from you again, wondered where you had got too! ...and yes, the braking "issue" isn't really an issue on a bike like this is it, 'cos you're not going to go haring around everywhere and as you say, you naturally adjust your riding accordingly....glad you sold the car!

I also had a 2009 Street Tripple along with a 2012 Bonnie standard. I enjoyed both also for different reasons. I sat very comfortably on the Bonnie right on me buns but more on me balls on the Striple. I traded in my Striple on a new 2017 Street Glide. I just enjoyed the Bonnie's ride a more often then the Striple. The power was so tempting to get a ticket. I really liked the lightness though. I'm thinking of up dating my Bonnie for a newer lighter one. I will see this year. The problem being the closest dealer is over 100 miles away now since my local dealer stopped carrying the Triumph brand.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Bad news on the dealer front JS - where are you based?? I think you'll be very impressed with the new T100, a very different bike to the "old" Bonnie - I'd say almost worth a 200 mile round trip! All the best - TMF

Based in Owensboro Ky. Just 100 miles west of Louisville Ky. on the Ohio river. I would get the Bonnie Street because my I only have a 28" inseam. I understand the new ones are about 50 lbs lighter. That would be so much better. I don't know about the liger wheels though. It cuts down on tire options.

2019 now... Having this dilemma right now because I can't decide between a Street Triple R or a 2019 Street Twin. Honestly I think I'll end up choosing the Street Twin, I just love the way it looks, a lot more of a head-turner if you ask me and also such an amazing sound and a joy to ride on long, twisty roads. Great video, great comparison.

U can definitely hear the multi cylinder buzz of your triple. I used to have a Honda 750,four, and after the pipes broke in good, rumble was a bit better, especially during acceleration, but u could always tell it was an inline 4. Then I bought a vmax, and could definitely hear the difference. Now I have the t100, and I hear that definite rumble, but thats the parallel twin rumble I've heard. Course the previous owner put on outboard slashed slip-ons on it, so it rumble's all the time. I like it but my neighbors aren't so thrilled, especially gearing down the hill, on the way home. Thanks for the video.

Having watched one or two of your Triumph vlogs in the last 24 hours if I was given the choice, rather than choose between the T100 or the Street Triple, I would split it down the middle and get the T120. I would then put a single seat and bar end mirrors on it and call it a Bobber.

TheMissendenFlyer I’m in this same dilemma with the street twin and my current 2013 Street Triple R. Phenomenal bike it may be, but it just begs to be opened up and ridden fast all the time, anything else and it’s just not really very enjoyable tbh, because the STR is capable of so much, it’s wasted on our roads. Whereas a Street Twin is very well suited to real world riding and has a lot more character and can be enjoyed at sedate speeds and you can really use all what the bike offers.

I own an STR and have had a Bonnie (the "older one") as a loan bike a number of times. The Bonnie and STR are incomparable, in my opinion, because they're built for completely different purposes. As someone else mentioned - now that you have the Ducati I'd say there was less reasons to have the STR, especially if it's only used for pootling around the country lanes on, the Bonnie is a way nicer bike to do that on. The engine on the STR is very keen, as you mentioned, and I find myself wanting to go faster on it because of that. When riding the Bonnie, I was more content to just bob along nice and relaxed at the speed limit as opposed to testing the limits of the bike.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes that is very true gizzmo84 the relaxed nature of the Bonnie does make you ride in a relaxed manner, and that's no bad thing. It's funny how the character of a bike makes you ride accordingly isn't it - I don't think I've ever "pootled" anywhere on my Panigale for example!

Interesting topic. I own both a 2014 Triumph Street Triple R & a 2014 model T100... Bought both new back in 2014. :) They are completely different bikes as you mentioned. I'll never sell my T100 because I have an emotional connection to it, whereas I'll sell my STR someday. That said I ride the STR WAY more than the T100 and it has 3x the KM's on it already than the T100 (it's my daily commuter in summer). You really can't go wrong with either of course. Cheers!

To me it seems like a no brainer. You have a Pannigale for track/sport riding and a GS for adventures. Most of your vids are as you say lazy country lanes. Another sub 400 lb missile with 60° of ground clearance seems like overkill to me. Without the sport bike in the garage, I could see the dilemma. With a gem like the Duc on standby though, a comfy, relaxed twin makes all the sense in the world.

What Triumph ought to do of course is to combine the two and recreate the one classic that's missing from the current modern classics lineup, namely the Trident; not the 90s watercooled version but the 60s/70s T150/160. An air/water cooled 8-900 triple with the T100 styling, engine fins, small rad etc; some useable low/mid range as well as a bit on top. If you have the ear of the Triumph factory see if you can drop a hint, oh and tell them to go easy on the lbs as well. I'm thinking 3-into-2 headers, reverse cone megas (like the original), and that glorious sound (or as much as Euro4 will let out). Mmmm, where's me chequebook .....

Great topic this one mate I've sort of got the same dilemma at the moment myself trying to work out what to replace my Suzuki GSX S1000f with, I own a 2012 triple r like yourself which I must admit would be pretty hard to part with the way I'm sort of looking at is that the street is a fun bike and a totally different ride to my other bikes which are the retro W800 and Indian Scout and of course the GSX S1000f which pretty much is just brute force.So I really think it comes down to what sort of ride you want fun and fast on the sports bikes or slow and steady like the retro style of bikes.It would be interesting to see what you think of the Indian Scout maybe you could test ride one and give us your thoughts on the bike.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes agreed Chips, I love all bikes and it entirely depends on my mood which "type" I take out - some days a blast on the sports bike is in order, sometimes a lazy ride up a green lane is just the ticket. ...and would love to ride an Indian Scout, just don't think there are any dealers within easy reach of me here :0(

Having just ridden both on extended test rides, trying to get a good comparison between what are two very different machines won't be easy. The T100 was a surprising machine, very torquey with good usable power in all gears and at low speed, excellent for town/traffic riding. The T100 has amazing presence on the road and attracted a lot of attention. I loved the sound! deep bass sound with a crackle on over-run. Solid handing, good stability at speed on exposed roads. Comfy seat, clear clock set gear indicator, safe braking. What not to like? The Street Triple? I found the ST more inspiring to ride than the T100 and I am a relatively inexperienced rider. Totally engaging, beautiful balance, more than enough 'real world' power, amazing sound even with std pipe (induction roar very additive...), fab brakes and wonderful to ride. Which one to buy? Hmm, not easy to answer, it depends on what you want your bike for. The Bonnie is lovely, the new engine real quality. For me though, the ST has it all other than the road presence the Bonnie commands. The Bonnie is a tad expensive at £8.3k +, especially when I can pick up a used ST less than 2 yrs old with under 3k miles for £5k or so...

From all the shortfalls you mentioned, it seems the T120 might be a better candidate. Twin front brakes, quite a bit more power & torque with (what appears to be) the same basic layout. The T120 Black looks like an interesting little toy too.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
The trouble is the T120 feels so much heavier (although it's not THAT much heavier), and that for me is the basis of the fun with the T100....ironically i suspect it might be the twin disks/calipers on the front of the T120 that make it's handling less enjoyable (more unsprung weight and all that)...

I only say it because if you ride out of what you may call passion then maybe you will learn to ride, make it safer. If you ride just to pose then most probably you will not bother learning to ride therefore making it more dangerous. Happens a lot when guys who are a little older, have the money buy the cruiser or sports bike or whatever, midlife crisis types, maybe rode when they were younger or whatever, spend up big on all the gear go riding on the nice sunny day and don't come home. Sadly it happens all to often, here in OZ anyway, basic lack of practice or not having enough skill. I am all for bums on seats but make sure you do some good courses first, practice makes perfect. That's all I am trying to say, designer bikes are all good and well but please learn to ride first and get the motorcycle buzz the best way. Good vid by the way, long live the Bonny.

Good video TMF, good job of comparing two very different bikes. However!! As much as you're doing a comparison between two bikes, you're selling yourself a new bike. Which begs the question, what do you use your bikes for? Bonnie is clearly a laid back Sunday afternoon bike, and the Street is a ride like you're on fire bike, or hoon if you will. But you've got the Panigale for riding like the wind, and currently no Sunday bimble machine... OR... Keep the Striple and add the T100 ;)

Would you choose this over the t120? I know everyone loves a lighter bike but given the extras like heated grips, larger engine, horsepower, torque etc on the t120... also would you be better off with the t120 for pillion riding?

Gosh, difficult. My mate has the older bonneville (the one before this) and it looks great but sounds like a modern bike. They've certainly hit a niche and done it well. I tested the current Street triple RS the same day as trying out an XRT and the Street was definitely for me out of those 2 but less comfy but a more exciting bike. So I'd go for the Street but I don't have a GS and Panegale in my stable.

Excellent comparison as usual, I can see why people love the Bonnies, but I do think that the Bonnie and Street Triple are a difficult comparison to make, such different looks, power and just completely different bikes in old style versus new....would you not go for the T120? Has a bit more power I think.....I think you might change your mind when you ride the new Triple 🤔🤔

Yes it is an odd comparison I agree (and I said at the start of the video) but it's the comparison I'm making in my mind as I get to know the T100 better and I'm waiting to ride the new 765 Street...can't wait for a go on that.... Sadly in this day and age of designer everything people lose the whole concept of bikes, it does not really matter what you ride as long as you get the enjoyment factor. And by saying that I do not mean the high street cruiser types that only ride for the look at me feeling or the so called cool factor. I can never get the drive the car all week then ride the bike on the weekend dressed up in what ever uniform goes with that particular style of bike, full leathers with knee sliders on a sports bike, leather vest and open face helmet, bad boy image on a cruiser, adventure style with hard cases and full touratech gear on just to go for a two hour ride. When looks alone dictate your choice you really do not get it.

I'd keep the Street and add the T100 they are both brilliant but just to different to compare. My garage is not to dissimilar to yours, I have a Street Triple R (13) a T120 and a Exploroer, and in March the new Street Scrambler. I could not contemplate changing any of them unless it was for a similar type. My Tex is changing into a Tiger Sport and my Triple will change into a Speed Triple R or the new Street RS, the T120 stays, it's pretty heavily modded already the only change would be to add a supercharger!!

Ok I know you posted this video a year ago but i need to comment here. I have a dilemma what bike to buy next, unfortunately prices here in malta makes it more difficult for me. I like almost all type of motorcycles but had spot for classic or retro looking bikes, the Triumph Street Twin is a bike that i really felt in love with it when i first saw it on the showroom floor, here they cost at around 11300 euros a speed triple R i think starts at 12000 euros. So they are fairly close but I know I don't need a 100hp machine here BUT considering that for all that money on a ST I don't get adjustable suspension, About 30kg of extra weight and some other gizmos i really start questioning the decisions for a ST. another thing that it's a bit disappointing on the classic triumphs is that they changed to water cooling although the triumph engineers say that it actually 30% air cooled and 70% water cooling, so one of its negatives is that sense of fakery that it has but at least they dont have those stupid fake looking amal carbs. other contenders are the Ducati Scrambler Icon 10000 euros and Moto Guzzi V7 stone around 10000 too.

You try to keep this positive and what you say is correct but one major drawback with the Bonneville, which largely rides on its looks for appeal, is that horrible plastic chrome everywhere. Tank badges, blinkers etc that should be a feature but look really cheap and are nowhere near what this bike's supposed authenticity in appearance needs. That plastic also only lasts a relatively very short time before it looks like garbage. Maybe they think their customers are short time fashionistas rather than serious owners. A very bad choice which for me says the manufacturer is doing a con job and are telling their customers they are very gullible.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Well I must be super gullible because I hadn't noticed any "plastic chrome" on the bike (bar the tank badges)!!
@thomaselliott573
@thomaselliott573 7 лет назад
I think you will find the blinkers and stop light assembly are also plasticated chrome. And just by the by, the tank badge is in such a prominent position and represents the pride that has been put into the bike so even if it was the only one it does not speak well of their attitude. Horrible cheap stuff. They have got it on the Thruxton also.

The only thing I don't like about the Bonnies is all the fake stuff on it. IE: the fake carbs, the fake cover over the primary sprocket that is supposed to be a transmission cover, the fake push rod tube that is empty inside. All the fake stuff is there only to make it look old. Other than that the look and ride great. they really should have more power for a 900 cc bike though

The standard R Nine T is a completely different machine to the scrambler. Way nicer. Better components. More power and better delivery. Better forks. Way nicer handling. Smoother ride. It's a thing of absolutely beauty. Forget the scrambler. I don't rate it at all. It's not really a true scrambler (although it can be made way better with the thousands of aftermarket mods) and it doesn't really encapsulate what the standard NineT is about in my opinion. It's a just market driven, fashion riders Instagram bike. BMW Motorrad have completely appealed to that market. Some will love it because it puts you on a BM but also satisfies those who like that scrambler style. If it was a scrambler I was looking for I would absolutely go for the Triumph scramble... but the standard R Nine T is thing of beauty to look at and to ride. A real future classic. Would love to see you test one and see what you think... :)

@climbjay
@climbjay 7 лет назад
TheMissendenFlyer yes, the scrambler tyres are total bobbins on the road. Again, just appealing to those who like their bikes to look better than they handle. I think it's fair to assume that most NineT Scrambler buyers will be riding them on the road anyway so those tyres really are a fashion accessory. Each to their own though. Get yourself on a standard NineT... you will fall in love. And if you don't, I will eat my shoe 😉
