Wheel Bearings Replacement & Repack How To - Toyota Pickup 4Runner 4x4

This video covers wheel bearing disassembly and repacking. This process should be about the same for 92-95 Toyota 4 wheel drive pickup and 4Runner. It should also be similar for many other models of pickup and 4Runner.
Use these part numbers if you plan to replace the bearings:
Front Outer (4WD, 1994) amzn.to/2ktIBz8
Front Inner (4WD, 1994) amzn.to/2ktSKM9
I didn't replace the bearings in this video, however I should have. You can't always see damage or wear when you're doing this. Do to the amount of work involved I recommend replacing these bearing when you have it apart. Almost a year after repacking I need to replace a bearing, and possibly the hub. Live and learn.

Great video, just a simple suggestion, the wheel bearing nut sockets are only like 18 bucks. the first nut torque super tight, back off, then tighten to like 50 ft pounds or so and rotate the rotor back and forth about four revolutions each way, then back off nut. Then to finish tightening torque first nut to 20 ft-lbs then tighten second nut to 40 ft-lbs. I know it's not truly the FSM specs, but it has worked for me for 30 years on my toyotas.

to make life easier for you and everyone, this ADD HUB has the two screw hole in the opposite side from one another. using a thread screws which should be something like m.12x1 or something numbness just the same thread hole like the rear drum. with that being said leave the bolt on the tip of the stud so that those cone want be flying off. work smart not hard! the stocket is a 54mm and that cost about $20-$25 save the nut life longer this goes for all toyota trucks that has the ADD HUB, LIKE T100, 4RUNNER, TACOMA, AND TUNDRA

I just did both front end wheels and replaced the races and the bearings and grease, and all the studs, and the rotors. I found the proper torques for the nuts as well. If you have a torque wrench and the socket for the large lock nuts then the inner nut is to be torqued to 43 ft lbs and then backed off to loose, and then torqued again to 18 ft lbs. Then apply the lock washer, then torque the outer lock nut to 35 ft lbs. Then bend the tabs. Then the torque for the small nuts on the plate is 23 ft lbs. And then the torque for the two bolts that attach the caliper to the steering knuckle is 90 ft lbs. So if you have a torque wrench, then use it and these figures for a little added peace of mind. Thanks again Jameson.@@AppalachianDIY

Have a 1993 T-100 4x4. The brake pedal will occasionally go soft, all the way to the floor, mostly at low speed. A shop replaced the master brake cyl. and two rear cylinders but didn't fix the problem. Now the shop says I need to replace the front wheel bearings (for $600) to fix the problem. Have you ever heard of bad wheel bearings causing a soft brake pedal?

This is what I need 👌🏻 I still have a question though, on my 2002 Hilux I experience a vibration when I hit about 100 kph or 60mph. Is this bearing related ? Thanks again for the cool tut!
@andygonzalez9319
@andygonzalez9319 5 лет назад
Hanno De Klerk that could be related to tire balancing issue. Wheel bearing will cause more of a howling noise depending on how bad they are. If bad enough they can cause a vibration feel but usually you would feel that at a lower speed with a very noticeable noise

So, NO on the replace of the inner races on that hub ? Seems like I would need that if I was driving on loose bearing and it worn in an elliptical pattern. Inner races do not fall out willingly or voluntarily. Still trying to figure out how to do this without getting complicated or use oversized hammer.
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 5 лет назад
It's always recommended to replace the races with the bearings. I don't normally do that though unless I know for sure the bearing failed. Like you said, they don't just fall out on their own. The worst that'll happen though, is the new bearing will prematurely start making noise or fail, in which case you'll have to do the job again. The hubs on these are expensive so cutting a race out can be scary. So I would try to figure out how bad your old bearings are, if at all, and decide if it's worth the risk

I did all of this using new brake pads and rotors. I even used the 54mm socket to torque the bearings in correctly per the repair manual. Now I'm getting a bad shudder when I apply the brakes. Especially at higher speeds. I'm thinking maybe one of the new rotors is bad? Maybe a caliper issue? I replaced and lubed the guide pins as well being the were old and didnt slide very well. Any help would be a life saver.

I had a very difficult time sliding the hub back on the spindle. At nine minutes and 10 seconds into your video your hub went on all the way with no problem. Because I could not get it on all the way the second nut wasn’t able to catch any thread from the spindle. Have you ever had this trouble?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 6 лет назад
I haven't, no. But there is not much to check at that point. Make sure nothing is stuck on the spindle, like old bearings or race. And your rotor/hub is all good. Sometimes you have to spin it a bit, as you are pressing it on. But it shouldn't be hard

@drahogerusiel2450
@drahogerusiel2450 8 лет назад
While doing this job how easy is it to pull the cv out of the axle to clean off any grit and old oil?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 8 лет назад
+Drahog Erusiel Actually very easy. Once that snap ring on the axle comes off, the axle will be free to move back and forth. You can just pull the whole hub assembly out far enough, so you have room to pull the axle away from it. You will probably need to pop out the lower ball joint (or unbolt it) then the axle will be ready to pop out with a pry bar. So basically if you are already doing the bearings, the only extra step to getting the axle out would be to possibly pop out the ball joint, just to allow enough clearance to get the axle away from the hub.

@rabidoctopus
@rabidoctopus 7 лет назад
at 51 seconds in the video you remove the nuts from the flange, and the bushings, someone before me hammered the flange and the bushings are stuck. there appears to be two threaded holes for bolts, curious is can I use a puller to free the outter flange? I didn't try because of time constaints, because your video makes it seem like a 3 second job, and it turned into a 3 hour nightmare for me, then I noticed that the flange had hammer marks over each individual bolt. we got it off a kid (our 92 4runner) and the newer 4 runner has a completely different setup. I was looking forward to getting the wheel bearings done and removing the rotors as they have grooves and some serious pad wear. I couldn't make it past where you were at for the life of me past the 51 second mark, I could remove the bolts and washers but the bushings were on so Damn tight and the flange seems to have a gasket as well. also you called the flange a plate at the end of the video, no judgement on my part, the book calls it a flange and also shows removal as easy as you did it. I was ready to take a blow torch to the thing after I couldn't get it off...
@rabidoctopus
@rabidoctopus 7 лет назад
I'm also probably going to do the CV joints on the front (driver and passenger) because it was a headache to get the Damn flange off, and we don't have a wrecking yard, or pull yard, any longer. and both CV's make a noise at sharp turns. if I open a can of worms I'm gonna finish it. and this 4runner needs TLC..
@AppalachianDIY

Usually when that thing gets stuck, I use an air hammer to persuade it off. I'm guessing a chisel and hammer would have the same effect, although with more effort required

@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 лет назад
Well it could be a wheel bearing, or it could be something else. It sounds kind of like a death wobble, which can be caused by any worn steering/suspension part on a conventional steering system like this old 4Runner. The typical method of diagnosis is to shake down the front end and look for play in the steering and suspension. It most certainly could still be a wheel bearing issue, but when you shake down the front end, you can usually see play where there shouldn't be. Any sort of play, including in the wheel bearing can cause a vibration like you mentioned. You didn't mention if it happens when you hit the brakes....If it does only happen when you hit the brakes, it could be much simpler, like a warped brake rotor.
@carvsdad5

im getting a vibration on the front driver side it comes and goes and is bad when it's cold ,could that be the barrings ?

Job started yesterday on my 1994 SR5 Xcab 4wd V6 5sp and just got uglier as I went on. What is it with these calipers? I just replaced these pieces of shit (2) years ago. Inner pads appear not to be working properly (via the caliper pressure). Appears like brake material is stuck to the rotor and/or pitted the rotor surface versus the outer rotor surface which is shiny clean. Any input on this? I put extra hi-temp brake grease on the back of the pads and the corresponding slides. Thank goodness they're under limited lifetime warranty at AutoZone. Started the process of pulling things off. Got stuck at the hub removal process, trying to get the first nut off. Watched your video which showed there are (5) tabs present on the lock washer. Didn't see them all, i.e., with all the grease AND it started to get dark, so I gave up for the night and wound up putting everything back together. Gonna give it another shot after I go and pick up the new rotors. Like that song by Shalimar, "the second time around is better than the first time"! Wish me luck. Thanks for the video. It was extremely helpful for getting me over the hump. :)

Cool man, just read this message. Im sure you already finished it up. Assuming all 4 pistons are moving freely and not seized, they should wear pretty evenly. One side will always wear more than the other though, slightly, due to the nature of things. Only a drastic difference in pad wear should cause alarm. But on the 4 piston setup, I would look first at piston movement

There is a very specific amount of torque required to pre-load the wheel bearing and by just tapping it tight with a screw driver will not guarantee it was correct. Just a word of caution before you try to complete this job without the correct 54mm Axle Nut Socket and a torque wrench.

Ok, and so, what is the exact torque needed ?

Is this an automatic 4 wheel drive front wheel? It doesn't look like it. I have a 2002 Tundra with automatic 4 wheel drive. I need to pack the front wheel bearings. Is the procedure the same? I had an automatic 4x4 and packed the bearings but the automatic made the job complicated and I had to change to manual. Do you know anything about this problem. Thx 4 the vid.

This is automatic 4 wheel drive, but it is different than what you are referring to you. The engagement of the front axle is actually in the axle shaft on this truck, via a shift motor on the axle. The engagement is not in the hubs like what you are talking about. This procedure is the same for all 4x4 Toyota truck without manual or automatic locking hubs.

@AppalachianDIY My 94 4runner makes a loud grinding noise on the right front when turning sharply left at slow speeds. Does that sound like wheel bearings to you?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 лет назад
Bearings can make noise in turns, but it's not usually only at low speeds, and not usually grinding. Is it 4WD? If so, it could be a CV joint, or even a ball joint, although I wouldn't necessarily associate those noises with grinding.

It is 4WD and started making this noise recently after having to use 4WD because of snow. I've also noticed the 4WD feeling pretty clunky in reverse. Starting to think I was wrong about wheel bearings.

Maybe, but that's interesting bit of info about when it started happening. It could be that the front axle(s) is stuck in 4WD. That's pretty common on these Toyotas. It could also be a problem with the hubs. Are they automatic or manual hubs? What I would do is raise the truck in the air (all 4 wheels), put it in drive, and watch the wheels. If it's in 2 wheel drive, and the front wheels are spinning, you know there's an issue. If that looks good, put it in 4WD (still in the air) and see if there is any noise with the wheels spinning, and turned all the way, in your case. That's just where I would start.

The washer that goes against the bearing wit the nub that sticks down the middle. My nub is worn so that washer can spin. Whats that going to cause?
@AppalachianDIY
@AppalachianDIY 7 лет назад
Well, assuming that the lock rings for the nuts are ok, and you bent the tabs down to keep the nuts from backing out, you should be OK. Although potentially if that washer is spinning all the time, there may be some premature bearing wear. Hard to say, but I can't imagine it causing immediate damage. It might be worth replacing though when you get a chance, just to make sure the bearing doesn't wear out faster.

There are no springs on any of the seals I bought. The one I pulled out of there looked like it was pressed in the opposite direction, on my truck.

With all due respect , you are doing it wrong by hammering the 1st nut in .. A bearing is better loose than tight , its suppose to get finger tighten and not a screw driver and hammer tight . The 2nd nut could be hammered and then bend the lock washer over that ...
