When Activision Tried to Make Bioshock 

Oh cool. My dad worked on this game as an animator. In the school level, there’s drawings made by kids. One of them was mine when I was in preschool (maybe kindergarten?) and the another was made by my best friend at the time. My younger brother is in the credits as he was born during the games development. Didn’t expect to hear about this game today. Thanks for the memories!

Poor Raven Software, not given half enough time or budget to actually make this work.

Fun fact: The early version of Singularity is much different than what it eventually became: 1. The game was originally envisioned as a third-person shooter, but later changed into first-person shooter 2. The early version of the TMD was originally much bulkier, it's attached like a backpack connected with the emitter on left hand. This changed into handheld when the game transitioned into FPS. It's timebending power also isn't instantaneous, originally the player would fire a beam from it while pointing at object, with different beam color differentiating between age/de-age and telekinesis 3. The plot is drastically different than what we have today. The US investigation team that arrives after Katorga-12 energy burst signature isn't arriving with helicopter, but sending a spy plane instead. Renko was originally the pilot of that plane before the plane was hit by singularity and crash landed on island in the past 4. A lot of enemies goes unused, some including a smaller version of giant beast fought at the train level, where player must blow off it's arms to cripple it, and another is head hunter enemies. Ghastly apparition of flying, jellyfish-like enemies that can pass through walls, that attacks the player like headcrab, attempting to get Ranko's head. The concept for it's introduction even includes player witnessing a corpse suddenly get it's head impaled from the floor before this creature emerged from it and engulf the head, decapitating it before float away with the head still clearly visible floating inside it's transparent body. Both monsters are cut due to time constraints and coding difficulties 5. There are a lot of more areas planned for the game, such a greenhouse level. These also cut because of time constraints

I played the multiplayer, it was fun. One team played as soldiers and the other played as the monsters. As a phase tick if you killed a player you’d get to play as their class which was totally unheard of

Raven is right up there with Id in my personal FPS dev pantheon. With the Microsoft acquisition, they'll hopefully get to be under the same flag again and who knows. Good things may come out of that.

Singularity is one of the most slept on games of all time. It's seriously such a good game. Easily one of the best single player FPS games of it's time.

I remember my dad playing this game when it came out. I eventually convinced him to let me play it, and it technically became my first "horror" game. It terrified me as a kid, but I toughed through the whole game and was so proud to 100% it. It is a great game with a kick ass setting and plot. If anyone finds this game somehow, get it. It should be like 10 bucks at most.

1:56 I'm strongly against portal being classified as an FPS. It's firmly in the puzzle genre. A first-person game isn't inherintly a FPS; First-person is referring to the perspective, not the gameplay. And although you technically do "shoot" in Portal, you never aim for opponents, your objective is always complete the test and progress to the next room. It's a first-person puzle game.

Played this when it first came out. Absolutely loved it, and I've never heard anyone talk about it since. I wish it was taken more seriously by Activision. Such a gem.

There's a game coming out this year very similar to this one called "Atomic Heart". It looks like a mesh of Doom, singularity and a little bit of bioshock. Also the music is being made by Mick Gordon (Doom music guy)

I am glad to see more people talking about this game it was one of the few games I didn't pirated so it is special to me

I actually visited Raven Software's hq in 2009. Got to see them do mo-cap live for either wolverine or singularity. Talked to the staff. It was a gem of a time.

Singularity was a solid attempt of a bioshock clone.

I have not played the game, but I do remember hearing about it and they had kind of an ARG thing going that seemed interesting. There is the possibility that it went through a big re-write late in development (rarely a good thing) as unless my memory is bad the Main character was actually a US fighter pilot who had crashed on the island. Not part of team of spec ops. Who knows what else changed? And was the stuff that got changed a down grade rather than an upgrade. IMO playing a fighter pilot would have been more interesting. sm

Singularity is absolutely a marvelous game. It has ONE major flaw IMO. You gather resources in the game to upgrade weapons and powers. That's cool. But one specific ability DOUBLES the amount of resources you find. It's pretty vital of you intend on maxing out everything. This ability NEEDS TO BE equiped. The game doesn't tell you this, it's a small tooltip in a menu that doesn't jump at you. So you buy the ability and you expect it to work, but it DOESN'T because IT'S NOT EQUIPPED. It's not a deal breaker, but it's definitely more enjoyable when you get to properly upgrade everything. I did earlier this year two playthroughs back to back, one without the ability (like EVERYONE who plays for the first time), and a second playthrough with the ability. Definitely a more enjoyable game with all the upgrades. Played the game at 4K, 120 fps, higher FOV and ReShade MXAO for that extra visual pazzaz. Made the visuals much more pleasant.

Absolutely loved Singularity, hands down one of the most original games Activision have released in a long time. But they were really scummy about promoting non COD games back then, Blur came out the same time and got the same treatment, essentially sealingvthe fate of Bizarre Creations. Oh, one of Singularity's biggest influences was the dhow, Lost. Loads of easter eggs referring to the dhow in it too.

I worked on this game. Just a first party requirements tester but it still counts. 👅I remember talking to the regular QA team on it and it used to be so much more before they had to cut the shit out of it to get it released and move on from it.

I'm not going to lie, Singularity is one of my favourite games of all times. If it was given proper development it definitely would be a cult classic. Always come back to replay it every few years. Wish the multiplayer was alive, was great fun back in the day.

Man I remember watching a Darksydephil playthrough of this game and loving it, the way the enemies squelched as you de-aged them was awesome.

I really liked Singularity on my PS3. It was deeply flawed but they had real ambition and it's super unique. Much more Bioshock or Metro than anything else. The time* changing and the opening is so cool man! I had no idea it was Raven Software though! Shame they have been relegated to making COD games nowadays, we need more immersive, narrative driven, linear, single player games! This one would also smack in VR if it was remastered. It won't happen but I would be down. 😅

I stand by this game being awesome for what it was. It didn't have the polish of other games sure but the concept was interesting and done well enough given the limitations they had to deal with.

I played singularity and honestly it still holds up today, It was very remember able and i remember unageing a ship out of the water so you had to get something out of it before it resinks, it was a time where games were still good and not goofy like now.

Played this back in 2012 alongside my best friend over the course of the week gave me that same feeling after I played bioshock where I was just completely awestruck and like almost depressed and remorseful I couldn’t experience it for the first time again. Never forgot it

When this game came out I was a kid. Somehow, my older brother found out about it and got it for the xbox 360. I was really intrigued by the game and used to watch him play. I ended up buying myself a copy a few years after that (dunno what happened to the game he had) and I really enjoyed it. I even bought it on steam a second time and have done a few play throughs. It’s been a long time since I last played it, I think it deserves another play through now.

Then Ken stole the entire story of singularity and made Bioshock Infinite. No. I’m not joking

i was lucky to find this video just cause the algorithm decided to recommend it in a top right corner something that very rarely happens and should be more often and it was a matter of clicking the thumbnail or closing the tab and moving on i want to find underrated channels to see it myself how badly youtube treats small creators but they dont have dedicated way to do so cause all the high ranking videos always on top and less lucky creators are either at the bottom or never shown theres enough big creators they have no competition and its easier for them to make content no matter what quality but for small creators its a never ending struggle

I teared up a little remembering a time as a young teen where I could go into a GameStop, look at games, and buy a used copy of a game I never heard of, going off of the case. Then that random game leaves a big impact on me that I still think about sometimes to this day. One of them being Singularity. I can only hope they will revisit it some day.
