Now that's what I call continuity. Across two iterations of the show, two spinoffs, and more than 30 years, a single plot thread carries on like no time has passed at all
I love the unintentional foreshadowing at the end of The Hand of Fear, with the dog and Sarah Jane whistling "Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow", and the Doctor later sending her K9. They couldn't have planned that any better.
Now I'm glad I didn't trim out the whistling part like I thought of doing. Now it's a smash cut from a song about getting a dog to a scene about getting a dog. If you want to see more unintentional foreshadowing (backshadowing?) from this show, check out my video "When Doctor Who does a callback to something that hasn't happened yet"
Serendipity. Like Jo Grant messing up the mushrooms at the Nuthutch in the story before Sarah Jane arrived. Also the name of the crafts programme Katy Manning went into after leaving the show.
bonus that is NEVER mentioned:When Ten meets Sarah Jane in School Reunion she says "You've Regenerated" and he says "Half a dozen times since we last met" so 6 times. What no one ever mentions is that this was originally a mistake. You don't always catch it as you think oh 4th doctor to 10th doctor, 6 regenerations.HOWEVER! In "The Five Doctors" Sarah Jane meets the 5th doctor, played by Peter Davison. With the addition of the War Doctor, this makes Sarah Jane the only person the Doctor never lied to about how many times he had regenerated. It's a mistake turned long-term easter egg, and it really holds that Continuity together.
@@Jonathan-ic9ef maybe they all got mindwiped or smt lol, five doctors was weird anyway only doctor that embraced or even cared or seemed to be aware of Susan was first doctor when Susan should be completely used to the concept of regeneration as they run away from galifrey, and the older doctors should be even more emotional about seeing her because they didn't see her for a long time
the doctors and the companions on that specials may have their memories of the event automatically erased after they return to their own time stream. with acceptation of the fifth doctor. same thing with the three doctors and day of the doctor. so SJS meeting with the fifth doctor was automatically forgotten.
the 12th doctor literally went into detail about all 11 generations + the war doctor (so 12 generations) with clara, so she knows about all of them truly too
For those who don't know (I certainly didn't), Aberdeen is over 400 miles away from Croydon. They're basically at opposite ends of the Island of Great Britian.
The Doctor does seem to have a strange tendency to end up in Scotland unintentionally. CLARA: This isn't my home, by the way. DOCTOR: Sorry. I'm sorry about that. I missed. CLARA: Where are we? DOCTOR: Glasgow, I think. CLARA: Ah. You'll fit right in. Scottish. DOCTOR: Right. Shall we, er. Do you want to go and get some coffee, or chips, or something? Or chips and coffee? CLARA: Coffee. Coffee would be great. You're buying. DOCTOR: I don't have any money. CLARA: You're fetching, then. Next episode: CLARA: Where the hell have you been? DOCTOR: You sent me for coffee. CLARA: Three weeks ago. In Glasgow. DOCTOR: Three weeks, that's a long time. CLARA: In Glasgow. That's dead in a ditch.
But for those who live in other "proper sized" countries, where 400 miles is frankly local - and perhaps doesn't even cross the state-line; the UK has a road-network so bad that we make 400 miles feel like 4000... ;-) It's our own sort of special TARDIS effect where the country feels bigger on the inside!
@@schubertuk There's a Scottish comedian named Danny Bhoy who does this joke when he performs in Australia or here in Canada where he talks about driving for 9 hours and looking on the map and seeing that he's still in the same state/province. He says "If I’d got a car in Scotland and drove for nine hours, I’d be in the heart of the Czech Republic"
Another one with a good track record is the Brigadier, who on-screen has met the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th (DIT), 7th, and 12th (Cyber-Brig). EDIT: And of course from the new series, Clara met Doctors 1-11 all in the same episode, and later traveled with 12 too.
She met the 7th Doctor in the comics - it was great, long before the emotionalism of Russell's reboot in 2005, the Doctor and Sarah are equals (in height) and share a fond hug, before foiling the human livestock trafficking operation of the Kalik. There's a London bus as well!
@@highvoltage7797 They remember their first adventure with him but don't remember that they travelled with him afterwards. Donna didn't even get that. Although it makes me wonder what she thinks happened that she didn't get married first time around.
there are moments when the fan re-emerge. it happened with Hartnell, with baker, McGann, here with tennant, with Smith, and Capaldi (every other episode or so), and it's something that makes the show so much more
As someone who's never watched a full episode of classic Who, I really love the lack of music in that goodbye. It felt more real and relatable. I've said goodbye to a lot of people that I haven't seen again (with hopes to even if it's no longer possible) and it feels just like that. No music, no fanfare. Just parting words and then the ambiance of wherever you are.
I agree and disagree. There's a beauty to the silence of the moment. But also while we don't have music playing in the background of our most emotional moments, we do listen to music while thinking about these memories. And often we associate specific musical tracks with specific memories or eras of our lives (so much so that when we listen to those tracks again, we feel those feelings rushing back to us, i.e., nostalgia). So adding background music to a scene can be seen as an abstraction of that phenomenon.
It's heartbreaking both in-world and in the real world when the Tenth Doctor sees Sarah for the last time in the End of Time. The last ever appearance for probably the most iconic Doctor Who companion ever...
As someone who was born in raised in Aberdeen I can confirm that it would be a piss take to be stranded there, even for half an hour it would suck, and I’ve lived here 20 years so far
Imagine growing up to play the person you watched as a child, AND getting to hang out with one of the companions FROM said time! dream come true, RIP Elizabeth Sladen
But at the same time, the first one they tried to give her wasn't very good. She deserved a spinoff as good as "The Sarah Jane Adventures" all the way back when they made "K9 And Company", because she definitely deserved better than that one.
I love how Sarah-Jane was never mad at the doctor for leaving her, yes she was a little sad, but you can see she held no animosity towards him, I really like that it cuz it shows how close they became
I like that on multiple iterations of the Dr over different times, K9 knows who he is and how to interact with the Doctor perfectly straight away ... now *thats* great AI programming.
I like to think that whenever they had 10 do some stuff with some classic Who things, that David was loving every minute of it due to him being probably the biggest Who nerd to exist
Bit late but you're absolutely right. In a Comic Con Panel in like 2009, there's a video of it somewhere here. David said that it was amazing and surreal to hear his childhood companion call him the Doctor.
Brilliant set of clips. I'm so glad they decided to make the new series of Doctor Who in continuity with the original series, rather than starting from scratch. It lends depth to its history.
That final hug scene is made even better knowing that Tennant grew up watching Sladen and Tom Baker flying through the stars in that rickety old police box. And now here he is, playing the role of the Doctor, flying that very police box through the stars, and getting to meet and work with Sladen herself. Bet that was truly a magical moment on set. Rest in peace Elisabeth Sladen, you will never EVER be forgotten...
No, David said in an interview with The Guardian that his final lines were "You two, with me, spit spot", which is a scene when they're trying to escape the wedding locale early in the episode.
His last scene as the tenth Doctor in Sarah Jane adventures was with the kids inside the wedding venue. And his last scene in Doctor who was against a blue screen falling through the sky towards the Naismith mansion.
Sadly we're losing those characters one after another... :( And not all of them could easily come back "in universe". The return of Mel is great IMO, as whilst she's by far probably nobody's first choice, I think under RTD she could be brilliant... Although given the last time we saw her, I really don't see how she made her way back to 'current' Earth...
Oh, Liz Sladen. I will always believe that The Doctor loved Sarah Jane in a way he never loved any other companion. It wasn't romantic love. It wasn't familial love. It was simply... love. I think their love rose above a label and a surname. Time didn't change it. Distance didn't break it. Sarah Jane was/is the best companion of them all.
A grown man of sixty should not be moved to tears by a clip from a 'kids' TV show ... but here we are :O And watching that section with Tom Baker (the bulk of 'my' years tho' Pertwee was truly my Doctor) I suddenly realised why I had such a love for Kaylee from Firefly and Dr. Keller from Stargate Atlantis ... it's because Jewel Staite strongly reminds me of Elisabeth Sladen
Oh... that last line. Yes, it was remedied in The Star Beast, but the fact Sarah says no one will EVER forget The Doctor when he KNOWS Donna is going to HAVE to forget him and he'll live with that for thousands of years and his face as Sarah's leaving... That hurts more than I remembered
I must admit that I quit watching the regenerated series right after the big 50th anniversary special, but I absolutely loved it when it first returned. And the first episode with Sarah Jane and the Tenth Doctor was just magical. When she found the Tardis and then realized she was talking to the Doctor again at last, I think I probably had a tear in my eye.
Looking back, it’s so funny how in New Who, they played every goodbye scene with Sarah Jane as a permanent, solemn goodbye, but then she sees him 4 more times and gets her own spin-off show :/
@@iangreen4572 This isn't a compilation of every time the Doctor and Sarah Jane met, it's just a compilation tracing the running reference of "don't forget me", which doesn't get referenced in 11's SJA appearance.
4:59 davids acting is just fantastic, his face just leaks out the doctor and who the doctor actually is and how the doctor actually feels, makes your heart sink. Its so unreal. Wish i know the song.
The day someone forgets the Doctor is the day the Doctor looks back and doesn’t feel guilty. Maybe he’ll eventually forgive himself but I’m pretty sure that guilt will always be there. Even if the majority of his “misdoings” were not his fault he did have some like Gallifrey’s burning and nearly fracturing time because of saving Clara.
@@r.o.e.408 Most of his companions are a source of guilt. After it showed Rose, Martha, and Donna, it should have shown Adric, and had the Doctor say "Oh come on!"
@@PenneySounds Yeah, maybe they should have. But I think he asked the TARDIS "show me someone I like," so I guess that was just up to its interpretation.
Quite poignant that the finale scene was not only the actual last scene David Tennant filmed as the doctor while playing the 10th doctor it was also at a moment where the character knew he was going to die soon.
Tom and Liz played Sarah's departure scene beautifully...really gets you in the feels...the best companion farewell scene in the classic series. - Chris
I am 59 years old today. I still remember that gutted feeling, when Elizabeth Sladen left the Doctor, over 40-odd years ago. I loved her as a companion and Tom of course, was just the perfect Doctor. For me, the most amazing thing about Dr Who, is the emotional blow it delivers to its audience every few years, when a Doctor regenerates or a companion departs: perhaps in many ways, it taught us kids, how to deal with life, the ups and downs...? With regards to Elizabeth Sladen....a beautiful woman who never seemed to age and I'm so glad she became a star in her own right, with her own show, sadly, all too short a time. My god, I was lucky as a kid: the actors who entertained me, were professional, classy and knew what the hell they were doing!! Great upload, thanks for my birthday present.
Partly continuity, and partly that when you have a character played by an actress as compelling as Elizabeth Sladen, you bring that actress back every time you can.
You could have left the original as 4:3 and had the black bars on the side, then switched to 16:9 with the modern clip. I think it would have looked fine.
@@HeatherAckroyd Yeah, but this looks a little more consistent in terms of format. And it's kind of fun, and makes the video look more unique than just a montage of clips.
My mother's favourite classic who companion was Sarah Jane Smith, because her first two names were also Sarah Jane. Unfortunately both her and Elizabeth Sladen died from breast cancer. RIP to my two childhood heroes
Someone help remind me - with Capaldi, at one point he's going through a series of notes of polite things to say, and I swear one of them says "I'm sorry I left you in Aberdeen."
@@thegrimmretails3777 Considering her first outing with 12 ended with him abandoning her in Glasgow, I think what happened to Sarah Jane may not have been a one-off CLARA: This isn't my home, by the way. She was my favorite of all The Doctor's companions by a very long shot, and I had a schoolboy crush on her to boot. So sad she went at still a young age, Rip Elizabeth Sladen
The best companion with number 4, the best Doctor. We'll never see on-screen chemistry on Dr Who like that again; this video just proved it. Great compilation video, Penny. Thank tou.
Ironically the song Sarah Jane is whistling at the end of "Hand of Fear" is called "Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me A Bow-Wow"; now take into consideration that K-9 hadn't been written into the show yet and the thought of the attempted spin-off "K-9 and Company" was not even a glimmer in Bob Baker and Dave Martin's combined imagination and it just shows how much gold can be found in pure coincidences. ^_^
I always loved Sarah Jane. She was my Doctor's companion (Tom Baker and John Pertwee) growing up. When I found out she passed away, I'm not afraid to admit I shed more than a few tears. She was taken away from us far too early. Rest in Peace, my Sarah Jane. 😢
I don't think I've ever seen a video which connects the Sarah Jane moments like this so directly, its lovely. And now I'm off to find out why someone is cutting onions in here... 😪
It was always be too soon 🥺 but I’m so glad she got the hug she always deserved. What a wonderful character and lovely woman. Vale Elisabeth Sladen 💕💕💕
Sarah Jane and the 4th Doctor were the best pairing IMHO in the classic series. When I was a kid, I was so saddened by him leaving her...but then laughed when he stayed true to his nutty professor style of leaving her in the wrong town
4:22 This scene is doubly sad. Not only does the Doctor know hes going to change soon, as SJ's death is canon in show as in real life, and as she only had a couple of years left from that episode, its almost as if he knew that. Thay giant pause between "is this the last time ive ever going to see you?" and the doctors slightly glib, uncommited awnser, plus the thousand yard stare after she leaves almost makes it seem like he knows shes on borrowed time but cannot possibly face up to the fact that she will in fact, die. He knows, to some extent that, yes, this is going to be one of the last time he sees her, and coupled with his own impending sense of mortality it must kill him inside. The doctor knowing the deaths of alot of his companions does seem the kind of morbidly worldwise thing hed do. It adds *layers* of sadness to that one scene. What a beautiful show and what a beautiful woman. It breaks your heart.
You missed the one with the 12th Doctor in "Under the Lake" when the Doctor was being anti-social and Clara pulled out cue-cards of prepared not-rude things for him to say, one of them read "I should have known you didn't live in Aberdeen."
