Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! In today's video, we go back to 1988. Roberto Duran coming to the latter stage of his career, After some recent losses to the great Thomas Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. People felt it may be the right time for Duran to hang the gloves up. Duran felt he had one more world title in him, with Barkley being the guy with the WBC, but first, he had to get through the 6"1 Future Pop singer Paul Thorn

Not true- Duran wasn’t a small middleweight and Barkley knew it was time to go up. Ironically he seemingly had Hearns’ number but in reality Tommy also needed to go up and nearly skipped super entirely then controversially (IMO) lost the split to Barkley at LHW. Iran never won another fight again at middleweight losing those 3 straight shots at a strap concluding with Benn devastating him in the opening round in 1990. Fact is Durant retired at 12 stones. Meanwhile Iran desperately needed to go up at this exact time. Just bad timing and a great game plan by Roberto. Only timing worse than Iran’s was Tommy’s lol

Duran never lost his knockout punch, but as he moved up in weight, he did lose the ability to land his best shot. But when he did.....Watch Barkley. He didn't know where his corner was after that right by Duran. He looked at 3 different corners before finding it because there are only 4 corners in a square!! It is scary to wonder what Duran wouldve been like at a natural 160lbs. Hes still the greatest lightweight champion in my lifetime, by far.....

Duran, one of the best fighters to ever lace on a pair of gloves. He essentially ended Barkley's boxing career. Barkley was about as disfigured as you can get in a fight and Duran didn't have a mark on him. One tough dude. They don't build fighters like Duran anymore. Today's fighters in his weight class would have danced and dodged all over the place to avoid fighting Duran in his prime. They avoid each other now even though none of them are that good.

If you're Duran he must have been thinking 'I've been in with de jesus, Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, had 82 fights, so why am I in with this guy?' it must have been tough for Duran to be excited and 'up' for this bout. Credit to the other fella he took some bombs and lost some blood, he wasn't phased or scared in there. Duran wasn't motivated for the Kirkland Laing bout in 82 either and he lost on points to the awkward Laing. 👍

I saw Paul Thorne several times in concert in Santa Cruz and he has a great sense of humor. He talked about his fight with Roberto Duran and of course wrote a song about it, "I Rather be a Hammer than a Nail". I climbed in the ring With Roberto Duran And the punches began To rain down He hit me with a dozen Hard upper cuts And my corner Threw in the towel I asked him why He had to knock me out And he summed it up real well He said, "I'd rather be a hammer Than a nail" If you've ever been On the receiving end Then you know What it's like A losing situation Has been the story of my life But I ain't gonna' let it Beat me down And someday I'll prevail Yes I will I'd rather be a hammer Than a nail I'd rather be a hammer Than a nail

*I sparred some 20-30 rounds with Roberto Duran in Gardnerville Nevada. Right before the Barclay fight. Duran had a mastery of inside defensive fighting tactics. Which made me constantly pivot, and use the angles for openings. So I could stay on the offensive. Since I knew offense would be my asset. As, I outweighed Duran. I was fighting at 178 lbs. The gym was right down the street from my Grandmother's house. I would go and spar this legend in her tiny town. Back in 1989, I was an amateur. I ended with 42-4 amateur record. Roberto was actually a pretty nice man outside the ring but once you saw his sneer. You knew his "nice" persona switch had been turned off and his "killer" persona switch turned on. The man hit very hard but I kept right on coming and using the angles. I earned his respect for that. Its all a memory now. Roberto will go down as one of the greatest Middleweights in history. Personally..I give Marvin Hagler the GOAT pound for pound status by a slight edge*

@@jimmyrants4342 *No. I don't recall the name. I didn't grow up in Nevada. I grew up in Oakland and LA.. My sister knew an Amateur contender from Gardnerville she met visiting my Grandmother in 1989. I believe his name was Jared. Who was a Lightweight. My sister told me about the gym. As, I prepared to leave Oakland and visit my Grandmother. While I visiting her, I ventured down to gym with my equipment to seek gym access. The man managing gym let me in. Low and behold, Roberto walked in with his entourage the next day. Needless to say, I stayed in town and became one of the sparring partners. The gym recognized my skill and experience quickly. While Roberto picked out fighters to spar. He would often pick to pair 3-4 fighters. He would spar 15 rounds collectively with all of us. Which was 3-4 rounds with each of us, at a time. After, a month and a half. I returned back to California. Later fought in the Golden Gloves, Nationals, and World Amateur Chapionships in Australia. I fought out of Garden City gym San Jose, and Kings Gym in Oakland*

Paul did good against Duran. He showed no fear and has decent skills. Maybe with a better camp he would've done it better. Duran was all timing, it's unbelievable how he generates power in the short distance just by turning the hips. He had so much talent that it made him think he doesn't need to train properly and control his weight between fights. Last night (Nov 16 - 2023) we got two awful boxing fights where we watched boxing decadency at his finest, Shakur winning a belt without even trying to win and De Los Santos completely scared of walking him down... Plus Navarrete who has horrible footwork and balance, it makes me sad thinking we will never see another era with such talented fighters like Duran.
