The humble necktie has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, as increasingly more men decide to go for the open collar in the workplace and daily life. However, the necktie has been with us for centuries and remains an important platform for the stylish man to demonstrate his awareness of colour and texture in relation to his wider ensemble of clothing.
In this video I muse over the origins of the tie and how and when I wear it in my life in the modern era.

When I was in my late teens I bought a very nice striped tie. One day I looked at the tab in the back and it said Royal Irish Fusiliers. I'm glad I never wore it in one of my frequent travels to the UK so as not to take credit for being a member of a distingushed organization of which I was not affiliated.

Great video. Wearing a suit in the weekend is a hobby. So I'll always wear a tie and pocket square. Combining colour is stimulating for the mind 😎

Fascinating talk about ties! My only comment is that where I live (Northern California in Silicon Valley) is the epitome of casual dress. My only opportunity (in the workplace) to wear a tie is with solely a dress shirt. A suit or even a jacked would unfortunately invite comments and questions about me going to a job interview with a competitor!!!

At my previous job suit and / or tie was considered overdressed. When colleagues asked me why I "dressed up" I usually responded that I was going on a job interview, followed by a dramatic pause and a one eye blink. I did so also when the CEO asked. After a while they learned I was joking. So, when I had a job interview appointment I was not lying. ;-)

Its all in the context, I wear my ties frequently, so my associates are aware of my dapper leanings, but consideration needs to be taken.

Have you ever worn just a waistcoat and tie? Its a nice alternative on a warm day when you still want to look somewhat dressy casual.

I've recently purchased 2 new waistcoats to incorporate into my regular attire - I must say its a nice change.

Another fine video Ash. I miss not wearing a tie at work as we now wear a breathable collarless thing. I always felt the collar and tie gave the police a degree of professionalism. I make up for it by wearing one as much I can. Looking forward to the next instalment

I could not agree more! The casualisation of professional clothing in all walks of life is a sin - however - it does make us well-dressed chaps stand out a little more, so there is a positive side.

Looking forward to the video on when to wear what tie. Will you discuss when to wear club ties? And thank you for reminding me how classic and stylish charcoal is.

Having enjoyed other videos in this series I found this one disappointing. Three points I wish to raise here. Firstly, History Professor Ronald Hutton of Bristol University claims Prince Rupert (1640s) at the siege of Bristol tied a length of cloth tied around his neck and started a fashion trend in court which carried on. Secondly, Oscar Wilde (fashion trendsetter) wore a collar and tie in the 1890s, 30 years before the guy in America. Thirdly, the picture of the Royal Air and the US Air Force is confusing because in further examples of British ties, the stripes run the same way as the US tie!

Sorry to disappoint, I do try to stay as accurate as possible. Most common literature credits the Croats as being the source of the modern cravat (and through natural evolution, the tie we recognise today), the claim regarding Prince Rupert being the source was previously unknown to me, however, as the Croat genesis theory is contemporary (roughly) to the Prince Rupert suggestion, they may be linked, or have influence upon each other. Rupert was a Dutch-English nobleman, who spent a large proportion of his life (1619 - 1682) within various European courts and would undoubtedly have been influenced by the dressing habits of his fellow nobles - who were certainly influenced by the original Croat/cravat origin story). With regards to the neck-tie, I made reference to the first acknowledged use of the modern 3-piece neck tie as still commonly used today. The simple one-piece neck tie has been in use much longer, as you make reference. But the modern tie can be traced as referenced in the video. The orientation of stripes in British and USA ties has sadly been long overlooked by many of the fashion houses in the modern era and this can no longer be taken as a rule - however, the more traditional tie manufacturers (Turnbull & Asser, etc.) maintain these traditions, as to the military establishments of both great nations. Hope this clears those points up - thank you bringing them up, its always great to look even deeper into topics one has an interest in.
