• When Young Kids Do Har...
When Young Kids Do Hard Time is a fully produced prison documentary featuring the stories of young kids sentenced to adult prison. Elsewhere on our channel viewers have seen interviews with brothers Blade and Bennie Reed. What people haven't seen is the fully produced documentary on their story, along with a few others featured in this film, When Young Kids Do Hard Time. Throughout the film, viewers get a look at what life is like for young kids who have been sentenced to the adult prison system. In the prison featured in this documentary, Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, all youth under the age of 18 are housed in the Youth Incarcerated as Adults cellblock (YIA). But once a youth turns 18, they are immediately transferred to the adult prison population, either at Wabash or one of the state's other adult prisons.
Stories also include kids who are serving time in the adult prison Segregation cellblock after getting in fights in the YIA cellblock, and interviews with adult prisoners who are serving life sentences who talk about what's still ahead for kids who are staring down decades behind bars.
Note; Blade and Bennie Reed are still incarcerated. Blade was charged with possession of a dangerous device/material which added 2 additional years to his sentence. His projected release date is 2027. Bennie's released date is currently set for 2037.
Adam Contreras was returned to court authority upon release in 2020.
Demonae Lewis was released from prison but rearrested and sentenced to 50 years in prison in 2018 for attempted murder and unlawful firearm possession by a serious felon. His projected release date is 2063.

I was sentenced to 49yrs to life when I was 17. I did 24yrs in adult prison in California. I got out July 2021. Prison changes you., you either learn or get worse. But I do believe most kids that go to prison and spend decades behind them walls are much more mature mentally then your average prisoner. I’m enjoying my life, I love my freedom and enjoy the simple things in life.

I guess there are two different aspects to prison punishment: One is to punish the offender, the second is to keep society safe from them. And I am sorry to say that I would not want murderers near me or my family and friends. 🤔

34:30 are they smirking about what they did? 10 year developmentally is plenty old enough to know right from wrong. The youngest in my family at the moment is 2, the next is 7 and a few months. The next is almost 8, if I asked them what would happen if someone ‘cut’ someone’s neck like he did, they would say without having to think “they will di*” I’ve taught thousands of children who have had some awful lives, they still knew right from wrong. In schools children walk around with scissors held safely, they don’t walk around with the blades pointing out. Children know sharp things cause harm.

What's sad is that these kids aren't stupid. They are well spoken, and they have decent heads on their shoulders, at the very least. At the end of the day, it all comes down to who you surround yourself with. They are young enough to understand the impact that these choices will have on their life long-term, thankfully. I hope they learn from their actions and return to society as changed individuals.

So sad, my brother was locked up at thirteen and was transferred to adult prison when he turned old enough, where he spent another few years. He got out a couple times but his freedom didn't last forever. He went on the run and was facing over 15 years. Well they found him overdosed a couple weeks ago.. I just feel like a lot of these kids never really had a chance
@CalamariProductions
@CalamariProductions 2 года назад
@Insightful Entertainment - wow, that is such a sad, sad story. So sorry to hear about your brother. Being locked up at 13 is, in itself, a terrible policy. Kids at that age are far too young to be thrown into that world and be expected to emerge better off. Research proves it. We firmly believe there are much more effective ways to treat kids who have committed offenses than simply throwing them behind bars. We've also learned a lot from the family members of crime victims, many of whom advocate for a different approach when it comes to juvenile subjects. Really appreciate you taking the time to post such a personal comment. It's only by sharing stories like this that people begin to understand the depths of these issues.

@Katfishforrent
@Katfishforrent 8 месяцев назад
Exactly this. This is what many people don't understand. There are two types of offenders, the leaders and followers. The ones who commit crimes out of selfishness and the ones who do it because they follow the only ones they have to look up to. And the worst thing you can do is to put these kids around more bad examples. You take those same kids who follow, giving them good examples to follow, and they wouldnt be doing crimes. The system should not be so black and white overall. There are so many people who can be rehabilitated and should be. While there are people who are simply bad people who are never going to be safe for society, and those are the ones who should be given the long term and life sentences. But the ones who can be, should be treated differently and rehabilitated instead of punished only.

These kids may be kids, but they’re much more goddamn mature and talk like men more so than a lot of guys and people my age I know. Some of em sound to have good hearts and have taken responsibility for the wrongs they’ve done. What they have done may be terrible and absolutely tragic for the victims families, they at least sound like they’re trying to get their life straight and headed in the right path. Crazy how one mistake like that that took all but a few minutes to take part in could completely change your life or even end it

I was 16 when I placed in a high security prison in Oklahoma called osp or big Mac... I fell through a loop hole in the system. I was supposed to go into a boot camp but due to my high flight risk they placed me in the walls... I spent almost a year before my lawyer found me and got me transferred out... it's really hard on a young person to be in a place like that... we all make mistakes and shouldn't suffer forever for it... God knows those who are truly sorry...

@benjimandover8072 - Really appreciate you posting your own personal story. You are right -- it can take a long time to see legal movement once you're in the system. A lot of young people don't have lawyers and languish even more. It's a tough place, that's for sure. Thanks again for sharing your story and taking the time to be here with us on our channel.

We have a saying here in the UK...Your a product of you're environment. In other words if your around bad people or hard drug's then the sad fact is that you most probably end up in prison at some point, mind you the UK ain't as punitive as the US we don't have that 3 strikes and your lifed off or the death penalty here but our prison's are brutal one of the favourite methods of messing some one up is by boiling suger in the kettle and throwing it at someone it then sticks to your skin burning people and self made shanks then getting plugged in the neck or kidneys some bad shit. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

That sucks. I'm 17, and couldn't imagine spending my youth in prison. The American system is draconian. In my country, if a 16 or 17-year-old commits a robbery, they will get at most half a year of probation and a small fine. Who the hell puts a kid in a prison for robbery. That's disgusting.

That's a draconian sentence. What the hell is wrong with America? If I commit a robbery, I would get half a year of probation and a small fine in my country. That's the correct approach. That's why our crime rates are so low, and our system is humane and working.

I wanna know what Blade’s IQ was at 13? History of drug addicted parents, abuse, and he seems to be regurgitating what his brother has told him. Does he deserve to be free, NO….but 30 years at 13?!? Yet again, the amazing state of Indiana throwing the keys away with the kids. But just the poor, mentally challenged ones.

@CalamariProductions Год назад
@Nrs Jeni - There were many mental health professionals weighing in on Blade's case at the time, and they tended to agree with you. If our memory serves us, he was diagnosed autistic (among other things). Due to this and so many other factors, he has had a very difficult time in prison. We hope to do an update on him in the near future. Thank you for asking and posting.
