lmao @ the people saying "hows that racist" "he couldve just asked her ethnicity" its about the fact that non-white ppl are just assumed to be different and therefore aside from the norm. Imagine if you were asked for your ethnicity during an interview (a PROFESSIONAL setting, not casual between friends). Whats the point of that except to profile you and create more assumptions based on what you say about yourself.
@danieljung7097

maybe you find it offensice because you spend all day watching anime in your room and complaining about nonexistant problems. curious questions are pretty common in interviews. interviews dont need to be as professional as you seem to think. go out and have some real experience in life before you whine online.

The overly incessant need to know people of color’s ethnicity is often a push to differentiate that they’re seen as not a part of the dominant majority. It stems from xenophobia and racism

If I was asked my ethnicity in an interview I'd say that I'm a fourth generation Irish immigrant on my mother's side and my patrilineal grandfather was adopted by coal miners. You know, the truth, without any evasiveness or embellishment. I'm proud of my race, so I have no reason to obfuscate the information I have. My bloodline on my mother's side has been traced back Bragi Boddarson, king of skalds. I brag about my Blood to everyone, my ancestor is literally a god.

I was working on a site and could overhear a bloke working and I was trying to figure out his accent. "He's Scottish." I decided, silently, and then walked a bit further along (outdoors) the site and then decided, "No. Not at all Scottish, he's more Irish sounding." Then an hour later I heard him chatting on the phone to someone, and I changed my mind again and chose, "Manx. He's not quite Irish or Scottish, perhaps he's from the Isle of Man?" [N.B. note that I really didn't care where he was from, and I was merely curious.] Later, I get to chat with the bloke and I tell him my thoughts and why. He smiled broadly and told me he's from a community in Canada where the massive Island was mainly colonised by both Scots and Irish, so the accent remains a mix of both, with a bit of softening due to media. :)

Regardless of 'what the question is', the fact remains that, in this situation (job interview), asking "Where are you from?", "Where were you born?" and "What's your heritage/ethnicity" is illegal. For any comments that are going to be along the lines of "But you need to know if someone is living there legally!", the correct question employers are allowed to ask is "Are you legally authorised to work in [country]?" Oh, and more so than that, someone's heritage/ethnicity is none of your damn business, and if they are clearly uncomfortable talking about it with you or dodging questions, drop the damn topic.
@tracy4290

To me that is shocking. Not the fact to ask someone where they are from as the question many times is asked by curiosity or because they just want to know. And more often than not, it leads to interesting conversations. I myself ran interview where I was asking people where they were from out of curiosity or just to chat about their country of origin...

For all the people in the comments saying: The problem is that he asked "why are you brown?" if he asked politely "what is your ethnicity?" everything would have been alright. No. No it wouldn't have. And it's pretty obvious why not. The question "what is your ethnicity?" is not something that's materially relevant to just about any benign situation. It doesn't tell you anything about someone as a person. And sure, maybe to you it's just a harmless fun factoid to learn about others. You mean no ill-will by asking. But not everyone does. Plenty of people ask, politely, what other's ethnicities are and it matters to them. Maybe they circle around the question because they're aware they're not supposed to care about people's races, but they do care. For plenty of people their ethnicity can be a mark against them, can classify them as other, can lead to all kinds of stereotyping. Ethnically ambiguous people of color navigate a world populated by bigots who ask after their ethnicity so they can be neatly boxed and labeled as the appropriate type of other. And *you*, my harmless factoid gathering friend, are not special. There is no magic "I'm Not A Bigot, No Really" badge for you to wear that will assure people you're really not a bigot. The best you can do is just not do the things that bigots do. So when you ask your oh-so-harmless factoid gathering question, guess what?! There is no way for the recipient to distinguish your motivation from that of a bigot! Are you making small-talk? Are you gearing up for some racist nationalism? Some subtle down-the-road bias? Who knows! Certainly not the person you're talking to! That's not a comfortable position to put someone in. And if you think beyond your own much-protested Totally Not A Bigot innocence for like, thirty seconds, that's pretty obvious. If rather than being angry when people imply you could be doing racist things you instead ask yourself "how might my race-based question make this person feel?", it's pretty obvious. So stop protesting your innocence and just stop putting yourself in a position where you have to. Don't ask questions that could have come from a racist's mouth. Because what you mean matters for shit when what you say makes a person justly wary of your motives.

Haha score!! This one gave me bundles of laughter. This question is a bit of a tricky one. There are heaps of answers and ambiguous approaches. Obviously the one being difficult is that youre a local just like everyone else. You are Australian born, British born, American born, so you're obviously Australian, British, American, and you're blessed with Western values, you are educated at your place of birth, made some friends, you're English native speaker just like everyone else in addition to speaking another language at home, and yet, you are still treated and seen as a forienger. The fact that you're a western person and you're born and raised in a country apart from your heritage, ethnicity or background especially where your grandparents, parents were originally from, you get some iffy signs. Not all one size fits all this question. I guess you just have to approach this positively where people basically want to get to know you a person. There will be ignorant, selfless people who secretly box you into the stereotype at times. But, at the end of day, those people aren't worth your attention and you can just leave them with their ignorance. It shows how non-open minded and toxic fuelled they are. You can just highlight your birthplace and mention your heritage at the same time. For example, if I were to given the question of 'where are you from'? ' from my fellow Aussie locals in Melbourne, I would say, I'm from Dandenong and my heritage is Vietnamese. Something simple. It shows your ethnicity, and it implies you're born in Australia or wherever locally obviously. People are interesting. It's a multiple choice and there's no right answer for this question. If they see you as a forienger, the other, despite being local like them all along, they got issues. Not you. So be proud! You don't have to prove your worth to uneducated people sometimes. But don't let people box you in because of your race. It's unhealthy and you'll get overwhelmed, sandwitched between societal pressure and individual pressure. Where for example, since Im Asian, if I'm not naturally gifted at maths or whatever then I would blame and torment myself for not living up the expectation because of my race. ( Btw, I don't catch on certain things but that's okay I like learning a second language and different cultures, it's my natual thing, I love drama, sometimes I like reading and I like my socials and learning new things that make us enjoy life and be human) Being stereotyped, thinking about it too much and trying to set yourself a lot of pressure because you don't reflect that is very unhealthy and depressing. Live up to your own worth and people should be treated as people. If we see white people or whoever just having a general chat, treat people as people, see them do all sorts, then anyone can be treated the same. Not by race, not by gender. Enough said. Have a good day! Love Jesus!

It's not that they see someone as a foreigner but it can be genuine curiosity and also not wanting to offend in other ways, you are Vietnamese for example, I may not be sure as someone could be Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and I don't want to stereotype so that's why I ask despite you having a clear local accent.

XENOPHOBIA EXPLAINED I played The Game way too many times in the years. I hate it when they ask THE QUESTION, and then call me a liar when I say I was born in the local hospital. Some of them have the audacity to get really angry and shout at me if I refuse to reveal any personal information. I hoped it's just Ireland. I hoped it's just UK. I hoped it's just me. I hoped... So please STOP. And if you haven't understand why until now, try and look at it this way. What are the chances that you would EVER feel at home in a place where every day, everybody constantly asks where are you from. I hope you understand the underline subcontext of that question is "I see you are obviously not from around here, because you just don't blend in no matter how hard you try, so now feel obliged to tell me all the personal details I will ask from you!" It usually starts with The Question, and then ends with what school my child goes to. No, such personal questions are NOT ok from complete strangers. This is not a friendly small talk. This is a nerve wracking and extremely boring interrogation. This is invasion of privacy. A torture with smile.

In a normal setting it's a bit much to ask someone , but for a company they often need to publish statistics on how much of their staff is a certain ethnic background (white-british, black-carribean etc.) even I got asked and I'm white British, it's just a normal thing

You get asked for generations back? My family is solidly immigrants if you go back about four generations, only oddly enough I have never once been asked. Because I'm white, and the family name was changed to something typically English. For me the questions stop at "London", which is where I grew up.

LOL.. I ask all people about where they're from, especially if they have an accent. I asked a delivery driver (about as brown as the girl in the video) where he was from after chatting with him for a while. His accent was doing my head in trying to figure it out, and I'm pretty good with accents. He looked really crestfallen, sighed and looked down. "Pakistan." He said. I was amazed. "That's a hell of a drive to Wiltshire, mate." I said. He grinned, and told me he was from Reading, but grew up in Barnsley.

@@ANCAPVoluntaryist - Nothing to do with, 'cos you don't blend in'. That's your own take, not mine. I'm from the UK and I live in SW England. There are places a few hours South of me where people who came from just 20 miles away were called 'Londonders' (same county they came from, or from across the globe made no difference, an outsider was an outsider, and perhaps not unwelcome. I come from miles away from where I live. When I visited North Africa (6 times so far), the most common question I'm asked is where I come from. There's nothing wrong with it.

@@TheGedByrne Some people have no problem sharing their personal information with strangers, but that doesn't give them the right to expect or demand such information from anyone else. Please respect other people's boundaries. You most likely mean no harm but you will put us both in an awkward situation, because if I don't answer, you will automatically consider me not in the mood or even hostile, and you will make me feel bad 100%. The small friendly talk have so many other topics not demanding personal information. Use them insted. It shouldn't be such big social exercise effort. Millions of people would really appreciate it. It's one thing to be interested in different cultures and ethnicities, and quite another to hire someone based on the colour of their skin. Playing the racist card in the former example, is just plain dumb.

@@nakkadu It's not that they are asked, but that they are asked twice. There are folks whose ancestors built the transcontinental railroad in the pre-civil war era. So, if a Chinese person says, "Baltimore" or "America" leave it at that. There are people whose family came over in 1947 looking down on the ones who came over in 1847, and looking down on the ones whose ancestors came over in 1619 too.

@@marefynn81 It's pretty obvious what is being asked....."what is your ancestry?".....it's normal to be inquisitive. When I go to Asia or Africa the 1st thing people want to know is where I'm from. I'm sure if I'd grown up there as a white person I'd still be asked. It shouldn't be seen as offensive. So people aren't allowed to show an interest anymore?
