As a white, American, 5'11, former basketball player, I had a lot of skills. I could shoot, pass, rebound, and even get steals. But I wasn't quick enough to guard guards and I wasn't tall enough to guard anyone else. And there wasn't anything I could do to change that. In other words, I was like millions and millions of basketball players before and after I played. 5'11 Larry Bird types are a dime a dozen. There's only ever been one 6'9 Larry Bird type. Larry Bird.
The other issue I have with this piece is that they are using a 5' 11" inch white player as an example. Show me a 5' 11" black player and I'll show you the same issues - too small to guard anyone. In today's NBA when it's all about pick & roll, they are looking for athletic 6'7" players who can guard and play EVERY position. The Kyle McAlarneys will NEVER have a good chance to make it in the NBA - irrespective of the color of their skin.

Good point, but the NHL doesn't get the same pass the NBA does. I hear blacks complain about why there are so few NHL players. I personally don't think the NBA should sign any player if he isn't capable, and if that excludes white Americans I don't care. But you know and I know that in several other sports where whites are predominant, such as baseball and hockey, the complaints of black players in those sports are listened to. If a white player wondered aloud why there are so few whites in the NBA, he might be called a racist or suggest he's implying something. In short, my question is why can't white athletes complain loudly?

I would like to make a very important point. Kyle McAlarney is not a very good basketball player. Not as good as he thinks he is. And as a white guy, I, who has played on many courts filled with black guys, am completely repulsed by this guy's attitude. He's a racist. And maybe that's why no NBA team wants to touch him. No one calls the LPGA (women's golf) racist even though they seem to be all Asian. Out of curiosity I compiled the nationalities of the top 200 players and found that 127 (63.5%) of the players had an Asian nationality, then I did this for the top 150, 100, 50, 25, and 10 with respective Asian percentages being 67%, 59%, 60%, 64%, and 60%. Then, I identified the players that were of Asian ethnicity but represented non-Asian countries and ran the numbers again based on ethnicity/race. Results: Top 200 70.5%, 150 67.33%, 100 69.69%, 50 70%, 25 76%, 10 70%. This in NOT RACIST, this is how the world should operate AKA a meritocracy where the best people are selected regardless of gender, race, religion, etc.

There are more and more black players in the NHL all the time. One reason is the availability of ice time when younger like 5 years old. So unlike parts of Canada and Europe they don't have outdoor rinks to skate on any time they want.

I went to a primarily white high school in a suburb of Detroit. The problem I found is the best athletes that are white play a wide variety of sports and often specialize in one. If you took the top ten athletes from our school, maybe one played basketball. There were a lot of good athletes who played Hockey, Baseball, and Lacrosse opposed to basketball. Black people aren't represented in those sports nearly as much as whites. When we played the mostly black schools in baseball, we would destroy them because they didn't have their top athletes playing that sport. Vice-versa in basketball because the top white athletes weren't playing and the top black athletes were.
You can take all the top white athletes and put them in basketball wouldn’t make a big difference. Afro Americans have higher testosterone levels than other races and it has been proven; deeper voice, slimmer waist and certain leg development has made us more athletic. It’s not races it’s just facts.

Interesting point. Most white fans see race first. They don't love the game. That is why if someone lives in, say Chicago, on their social media they'll announce that they're fans of the Bears, White Sox and Blackhawks for example and completely leave out the Bulls. Why? Because the NBA has few white superstars and if there aren't many white players on their team the average white fan will feel alienated.

I never considered the NBA to be a diverse, accepting league. European players had it rough and were considered weak, it's gotten much better since guys like Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili, and new guys like Luka Doncic and Kristap Porzingis have broken the stereotype, but it's still a problem. Asian players are also less likely to be selected, the most notable example being Jeremy Lin. When Lin was a senior in high school, he was a top 5 player in his state, but didn't get offered athletic scholarships, and went undrafted even though he had skill. In this case though, this guy just probably isn't good enough to be in the NBA, I took a look at his stats and he averages around 15 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds with a pretty good 3P% at 43.1%. I understand why he wasn't drafted, he gets okay points, but I don't think he could compete with the higher level that is the NBA.

I don't think there's the interest. It's like Soccer/futbol in the US. People play it, but don't take it seriously or think it could be a source of serious long term income. Plus I also think they doubt they really have a chance against the black players, so I don't think whites really pursue it seriously after a certain age

That's a stupid perspective. The key question is, is he good? Someone can be 4'10" even for all I care, but if he can shoot lights out, doesn't turn over the ball, plays good defense, etc, then I want him on my team. If that same guy were 7'6", he would be better than the 5' version of himself. So, yes, height helps, but that doesn't mean a 7' guy is better than a 5'10" guy, or that he even has more potential. You have to look at the whole package and not eliminate someone because of height. Stupid thinking is why there are teams that are perennially bad.

He's complaining when he at least had an opportunity to try out. Josh Gibson and many Black Baseball players prior to Jackie Robinson didn't get that same opportunity. Think about that before you play the victim card.

I looked up this guys stats and he averaged 15 points in 35 minutes, 3 assists on almost 2 turnovers, and barely shot over 40 percent from the field. That’s from his best year in college too! And he’s 5’11! What does he expect lmao
I remember growing up in the 80's and hearing coaches defiantly say things like..."big men shouldn't dribble!" Meanwhile in Europe, big 7ft white men are dribbling thru their legs and around their back dunking and canning 3's. Narrow minded coaching like that is not going to produce any Larry Birds any time soon. But in all reality it's just a game! Every kid should get a college degree before galavanting off to the pros, have a backup plan in case of injury, or you just don't make it, after all only about 500 players make up the NBA against a national population of 320 million.
Cooper Flagg and Chet Holmgren will probably be all stars if they don’t get hurt. I think the best 6’3 to 6’6 white athletes play hockey or maybe baseball. Mike Trout coulda made the NBA if he wanted to. The Mark Price draft fall part of this was divorced from the context of the 80s. There were only 24 teams back then. Price went 25th. Scott Skiles is a white guard he went ahead of Price in the same draft. Kyle said if you looked at his stat sheet you’d wanna draft him but he averaged 3 dimes a game in college. And a team took a chance on Jimmer Fredette, who was like Kyle on steroids, and a white American and got burned. We’ve seen these guys get a shot and not make it. Kyle also isn’t coachable here. The bottom line in any sport is: can they play? That's why I no more complain about the NBA than NASCAR. If they are good enough, they'll be out there.
Yeah it's the NBA for a reason, you are 5'11" and are a good shooter. NBA is looking for the whole package, athletic, defense, offense, how high you can jump, how tall are you. If you were 6'6" to 6'10" with the same skills then maybe they would take you but even then you would probably only be a bench player.
I will say that the NBA Finals that we just witnessed exhibited a ridiculous, super-human level of quickness, technical and skillful ability. Just watching that series gave me asthma attacks on some nights.
To tell you the truth, I never thought about there being a lack of white players in the NBA. When I'm watching a game or my favorite team, I'm just looking at the players on the court and how they can score. I guess that's what coaches are looking at too. I think those white European players really admire the NBA and aspire to showcase their talent in the NBA and so they make it their personal goal to get there. They know what it takes and what the scouts are looking for, so they pattern their game after the NBA players they see on TV. They even brought the Euro step with them, which a lot of American players are now using. Well, that's my two cents worth. 👍
That was changed back in 68 when the equal rights came into affect sending all other races other than black not only to the back of the bus, but they were thrown out the back door of the bus to make room for blacks only.
Steve Blake, out of Maryland, did OK as a white player in the NBA. He wasn't a superstar, but, at a skinny 6'3", he was a serviceable guard. He wasn't very quick, but his defense was decent. He had range and average handle. What got him through games was his scrappy tenacity to prove he could hang with better players.
International players often are white. So basically the athleticism thing is completely debunked. There's tons of white international players. For whatever reason, white Americans aren't getting drafted. It doesn't have to do with genetics though imo. I think it's more about fundamentals, work ethic, etc. I don't think white american players put in the work to be good anymore. Kevin Love can do it. Gordon Hayward can do it. There's plenty of white star players from all over the world. Complaining about athleticism is like complaining about height. You can only do so much. If you can't jump out of the building, learn to shoot. Learn to pass. Learn to handle the ball. Hit the weight room and play below the basket. Zach Randolph is black and can't jump over a phone book. Neither could Dirk and he was white. Chase Budinger was in a dunk contest and now he's like out of the league. There's tons of ways to dominate in the NBA. Steve Nash and Larry Bird seemed to do just fine without much athleticism. Same with Jerry West.

There are many physical differences between black and white americans, and those physical differences make all of the difference in terms of running, jumping, first step quickness, ect. Cheetahs and lions are both big cats just as blacks and whites are both human, but the anatomic differences between the two cats result in different abilties.
I remember watching McAlarney score like 40 points in destroying North Carolina. One of the greatest college performances I've ever seen, the guy did have some serious game. But the problem for these white college stars at the NBA level is always defense. Lots of white americans are good enough offensively, but the question is who can they defend? In McAlarney's case, you're looking at a 5'11" guy who could not jump and was far slower than most nba guards--so what NBA guards can he defend?

That's funny because black people only have a disproportionate amount of representation in 2 of the top 10 most popular sports globally and that's the NBA and NFL ( even the NFL isn't as you imply, strength based positions are disproportionally white while Speed based positions are disproportionally black) Every single strength sport is dominated by whites (strongman, powerlifting, Olympic weight lifting etc.) Blacks are good at running and jumping due to longer limbs proportionate to height (one of the things that makes them bad at strength sports), so sports that involve a lot of those things tend to favour them. Putting all your eggs in a couple baskets and then saying your the best at everything is ridiculous. The ego of a people who have accomplished nothing of worth is insanely confusing.
