Where old Cessna's go to die - salvage yard open day

Recently we traveled to Dallas to attend an open day at a local salvage yard. It was a moving experience. Although these aircraft are inanimate objects, one can't help but give each airframe a life, and wonder at all the stories behind each one.

I owned a ‘58 Cessna 310B for 7 years then upgraded to a ‘75 310R. I flew the R for 17 years. Absolutely loved the airplane. I’m 78 now and the day I sold it was a tough day. Still miss it. I bought parts from salvage yards all over the US. it’s the only way to keep them in the air. I never once worried the part was unsafe as a VERY thorough inspection was done prior to installation. The new owner loves the plane.

I used to fly Beech 18's and MU-2 for an air cargo business out of KRFD and the ending of this video reminded me when I descended into a cloud and it opened up into a gap of another cloud layer and once I was in between both layers static electricity started forming around the nose and my windscreen then about 2 inches above both props on the engines. It was pitch dark out on my way to Vancouver BC until the static electricity or St. Elmo's fire this was the only time I actually got startled and asked ATC if I could descend the little more into the clouds

This made me sad for some reason. Just thinking about these husks that once soared among the clouds.

At a glance I saw a half dozen AN fittings worth quite a bit these days. A stroll with a 9/16 wrench through that place would be like Christmas for a home builder.

Since these don't seem to be crashed...they probably just wore out. The lesson? Stop flying your planes so much. Go at least one day a week without flying.

Most of these plane types were low number production runs so if you’ve an older plane and need parts you’ve not many options available. My dad has has a early 70s Cessna and needed to replace the nose gear cowling panel. It required a world wide search for a replacement took 7 months found one in Australia meanwhile the plane was grounded. Scrap and parts yards are a godsend to those whom like older planes . Not like cars as the government doesn’t give a dam what sorts of parts you use to repair your ground vehicles. In planes every nut bolt part must be inspected every year or no permit to fly it. Only alternative is to have brand new parts custom made at a exceptional high cost
