You’re my favorite instructor, I said it before. You got me driving my stick shift jeep within two days. I daily drive it now and don’t even think twice; moving off, down shifting, you name it. It’s all muscle memory now. Cannot thank you enough. 21 years old in the US 🙂✌🏼

My instructor was amazing. He left me to figure out situations by myself unless they would have become a danger for other people. And if it seemed I was struggling with something he'd asked me to do, he would always ask me if I wanted his help/advice rather than just jumping in and helping. I passed in 28 lessons.
@shoyrushoyru
@shoyrushoyru Год назад
that sounds reasonably great. my instructor started in my learning journey by telling me what to do before it came up, but then later on in my lesson plan she would often mumble in agreement the right thing to do as i was close to doing it, and she never really tapered off of that behavior so i never really had the chance to develop confidence in fully making my own decisions in varying situations, as she unintentionally didnt give me the opportunity to think it through myself.

That's what mine does is let me figure it out for myself and only steps in if a situation could be dangerous on once we are pulled over he will ask me if I know what I did at such and such and ask me of I think i need his help with instructing or if I think doing it again I know what I need to do to avoid making the same mistake.

hahaha Same, mine was awesome. If I did something wrong he went "wrong, again..." which was as general as you could come up with. He would let me turn around and drive a bit of road again. If I asked what it was he went "nah nah nah, you're so smart, you figure it out". Unless I REALLY told him to tell me he just said, "wrong, again..." lol I passed first time, same for truck license. Those lessons were pure madness, in a good way.

As a driving learner, I may say the preferred approach is a fusion of both teaching styles, with gradual swift from more emphasis on instructing to coaching, as the beginners become more and more competent .

Having passed my driving test 38 years ago, I feel that I would always be happier with the instructing method, particularly at first. When learning as a timid 18 year old I would have felt intimidated more by the coaching method. If being asked a question, and not knowing the correct answer, I would have felt foolish for not knowing the answer. However, whilst being taught in the instructor method, I would certainly be happier & respectful that you were passing on your knowledge & experience to me.

I think some combination of the two is perfect. Leaning more one way or the other based on the individual pupil and what they may prefer. Some instructing tips have stuck with me almost my whole life and I pass them on when given the chance. That being said though, coaching can be very helpful to make the pupil come up with a solution of their own, tailored to their specific needs. I may be wrong but judging from your past videos with pupils, you tend to use both methods in unison. I believe that to be the best Edit: I wrote this comment before watching more of the video. You've mentioned that you use both methods combined. I'd say it's definitely the best way to go about it. Great teaching!

Hi Richard! I've been driving in Italy for almost 4 years (I'm Italian, passed my test there first time) and let me tell you: If all driving instructors here were like you a lot more people would be able to actually drive a car safely. My instructor basically never told me anything during my lessons and on the last lesson before the exam he shouted at me for getting my position wrong before parking saying that I could never pass my driving exam like that. If I had a driving instructor like you, who gives advice during the driving lesson without putting too much pressure on what you're doing or shouting when someone gets things wrong, I would have felt a lot more confident before my exam. Keep up the good work! I love your videos especially the ones about fuel consumption and more advanced driving technique!

I have dificulty with judging the width of my car, and how far it's from parked cars. No one ever explained either copy paste technique (until I started watching these videos) or the steering wheel width. So I just crawl and rely on my wing mirrors. The steering wheel technique is more helpful for me, and I plan to use it from now on. I like the mix of both teaching techniques, but it probably depends on the student as well. Also, I appreciate how you explain things and reasons why some actions are bad for your car. I learned so much from your videos and corrected most of those things.

Good video thanks, my instructor did a mix of general instructing but also coaching as he knew I was an older learner (49) who needed confidence boosting too. He was great, really chilled and friendly and we had a good chat and laugh most lessons, he never shouted but if I made a dangerous error I did know about it (but we’d talk it through and he’d make sure I knew what I’d done that was dangerous then we’d go back on the route/turn next lesson so I could do it correctly) I did pass at the end of May and I’m now getting some confidence building and coaching from my friend and her husband (who is an ADI) as I get use to driving by myself.

I think coaching is better. Allows the learner to talk and reflect on the situation whereas instructing took up a lot longer (about 3 and a half mins) whereas coaching only took up 2 and a bit minutes. As a learner I often make mistakes or don't perform 100% all the time but it doesn't mean I need a 6 minute instructing over it. Sometimes I don't even need coaching! Instructing really can feel more like the instructor is going on and on and having a bit of a go. I think it's better to coach the learner, see how they want to proceed - usually they know if they need more help with something and will ask for help and tips.

I think that the instructing approach is better on the early stage because the learner might not yet know enough to properly analyse problems. Later on, coaching becomes better, for developing the skill of problem analysis.

Just having watched the first part, I'd say personally I would prefer the Instructor style. The Coach gets the pupil to think through the problem and finding the right tools, but they first need to be instructed on what tools are in there and how to use them. The latter is better for beginners while the former would be more suitable with a more experienced pupil who is ironing out some of the finer points before their test.

I think I much prefer been instructed rather than coached. I think my driving instructor from the few lessons I've had seems more of a coaching instructor. But that could just be with me or that he feels I'm far enough to be able to work out mistakes I've made to resolve them rather then telling me what I'm doing wrong I guess to help me be more independent in been able to change something to get better at it. If I'm unsure on something though he will get me to pull over and usually show me in the book what we will or have been doing and things that I should do to for example make a right hand turn smoothly or to know when it's safe to go on a roundabout.

Different styles might suit different people, but I think that to me, the instructing style would be best in the beginning and the coaching style could work later on when I better could reflect about my driving and my choices. Leading questions, as you use, might work quite early, though; it's a combination of instructing and coaching style.

Richard, you really should consider doing instructional tv commercials for the BBC or ITV to remind every driver what we should and shouldn't do while driving. It's easy to get caught up in our little world's worrying about our problems and forget to be kind, courteous and considerate of each other on Britains ever decreasing road space. We need constant reminders of what we all should be doing to stay safe and courteous to other road users long after we pass the driving exam.

I'm not planning to get instruction, and I must say that from the examples presented, I couldn't tell a massive difference between the two different modes of teaching. Having said that, if I were to choose, I'd have definitely opted for the "instruction" variety. Although the goal of teaching is to get a person to become independent, i.e. understand all the circumstances of road situations and be able to reason out solutions on their own, there is little point in rediscovering what's already been discovered. It's obvious that certain patterns of behaviour, erroneus ones, are common to all student drivers, and an instructor will be able to identify and find methods of rectification much more quickly than the student on their own, so why waste time. At school, we don't rediscover trygonometry -- we learn it. True, finding out things on our own makes the conclusions more memorable and meaningful, but the process is very time consuming and frustrating.

I think a lot depends on the personality of the pupil as well. Some youngsters are very reluctant to put themselves into a situation where they may think they might look foolish. I agree you need a bit of both, I don't see why instructing someone is looked down on so much, it can save time, especially when you know the pupil really is going to make heavy work of coming to any useful insight.

Okay. I passed my driving test last November. I was on my third driving instructor. My first instructor - I was paying for 2 hour lessons ; 20 minutes of it wasted every single lesson. He asked me to pull over for smoking breaks, toilet breaks, refuelling the car... I never got that time back at the end of the lesson. The second instructor constantly belittled me and shouted at me. I sacked him off in very short measure. My third instructor was ideal. Much more like your style. If I am paying someone to teach me how to drive, I want them to tell me where I am going wrong. Don't assume (as my second instructor did) that it is an inbuilt instinctive skill.

I prefer instructing more, my instructor and myself will have a bit of banter about where I went wrong, explain to me how to fix it, bish bash bosh go have another go at the same or similar scenario, I'm very almost test ready now though so our lessons are mostly just banter 😂

How about if heading to the FIRST exit of a roundabout but it's shown 180° straight ahead on the road plate, 1st straight ahead, how to signal? Should keep signalling left before entering roundabout? Or only signal left halfway in the roundabout before exit?

I like an amalgamation of what and how you teach with the teachings of Ashley Neal. I've pinged you both on IG and FB iirc, I would love to see how you both discuss the way you both teach because it is quite different in my eyes. Both are great, but, as I said, I am curious ;)

I would favour the coaching method over the instruction method. It seems that you give the student every chance to spot their own mistake, before telling them yourself this way. I have thought mathematics and mental arithmetic over the years, have always found that trying to make a student think for themself first is the best way.

If I did oure coaching though, I would never give my pupil advice I know will help them. They would have to figure it all out for themselves which takes ages.

My first instructor had the first coaching style and I hated it. It just sounded condescending and its like he was talking to a baby. Like sometimes I make a mistake but not sure why but he wants me to give an essay why i did that mistake. It also felt like tine wasting as he'd talk fkr a long time

I love my instructor. He has a very unique style that fits me perfectly. Initially it was like being a rally driver and having a co-driver, and now I'm the one co-driving myself (as in literally verbally) while driving and he occasionally gives input. Then at the end I'm the one reflecting on what went wrong and how to improve it next time.

That's just about half the price I paid for my lessons with a driving school here in New York State, USA. The cost per lesson was already discounted because I took out the maximum amount of lessons I could in a single package as I was an absolute beginner. That was twenty 45-minute lessons. Doing the euros conversion math, my "hourly rate" would have been about 88 euros, if my lessons had actually even lasted an hour.

Think my instructor was a bit of both mostly left me to it unless something was wrong, but I was also older and probably a bit more aware than most of his students. though you have missed another type, I didnt think people did this, but my colleague is doing her test this week, turns out her instructor spends their lessons on his phone. told her she need to be reporting him but she is waiting till her test is done. but am wondering if she is really ready and how would he know if he cant put his phone down.

My instructor keeps giving the same advice again and again even if it doesn't work. For example: "Don't grip the steering too hard! Just look forward and the car will turn on it's own!" He expects me to move the steering wheel instinctually and smoothly and when that doesn't work he wrestles the steering from me without any warning and offcourse my unintentional reaction to grip the steering even harder because I'm startled and think I'm losing control but I see his hand I relax. And then he goes "aHa you grip too hard"... Bruh I don't want to assume the worst in people but I feel like I'm getting gaslit
@shoyrushoyru
@shoyrushoyru Год назад
i understand that feeling completely, it was very jarring to me when my instructor would just grab the steering wheel from me unexpectedly, and made me feel like we would both lose control of the car and get into an accident. it was very unsettling for me especially as i wasnt sure if they wanted me to keep trying to steer or if they wanted to fully take over, which would put us both in potential danger if they didnt communicate what they wanted to happen next and when before they let go i think instructors need to seamlessly switch between coaching and instructing styles whenever necessary to help a learner get the full picture. letting people just completely figure it out without some instruction leads to people putting misguided confidence in potentially wrong ideas or techniques in their attempt to understand the situation, but on the flip-side, loading peoples heads with too many tips and tricks could mean they might get overwhelmed and spend all their time trying to remember those even if theyre not sure they understand what the instructor means by it, versus being able to think freely and make decisions for themselves based on their own developing pattern recognition and understanding of the situation. its definitely a combination of the two that needs to happen in my opinion.

Unrelated to this video but what's your view on the advanced driving societies in the UK? Specifically I've noticed on videos to do with advanced driving that they really seem to look down on heel and toe/braking and gear changing simultaneously/using engine braking at all. These seem to be very much part of your (and how my) repertoire. Have you ever done an advanced course/masters course or test? Is it something you'd be interested in?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving Год назад
What is considered "advanced driving" is very much an opinion. It's something I've thought about doing for the sake of it but I don't think I would learn much considering how much time and thought I have put into driving over the years. I'm afraid that it would be petty things like how to hold the wheel or handbrake up before neutral or don't dry steer instead of something new that I'm yet to hear of or think of.
@SeanVlismas
@SeanVlismas Год назад
@@ConquerDriving That's a really interesting point about defining exactly what counts as advanced being up for debate. It all seems to be based on the Roadcraft manual and the "system of car control". I like the fact that they're encouraging people to keep learning after passing their test and trying to increase road safety but it does seem a little too prescriptive about using certain techniques and not using others.

Hiya mate I’ve had people stressing over the thinking distance now tbh with you when I drive I don’t think never have I always saw braking as common sense when ever I saw hazard markings on the road give way signs and stops signs traffic lights and traffic slowing down in front I always prepare to slow down when I see those happen so why is it the Highway Code states thinking distance it’s something I’ve never done I’ve always gone with my instinct lol
