I always dreamt about getting to that point where you are free to improvise a great jazz solo over a chord progression. You know what I mean: You can play the things that you want, the notes are right there and the lines sound great. You are just making music.

Another great video Jens. Always thought provoking. If Jazz improvisation can be thought of as Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, then the Beginner goal would be to simply lmply the chord progression. Then as more proficiency is gained, the Intermediate goal would be to lmply the chord progression, but also have good Rhythm(Time/Feel) and play nice Melodies. The Advanced goal would be all of the above plus try to tell a story with your solo. Telling a story with your solo doesn't mean every solo must have some kind of volcanic eruption climax. It simply means having a Beginning, Middle, and End that creates an Emotional Connection with the Listener. All of this is in my humble opinion of course. Thanks.

I had a "ah ha" moment in this video. I always tackle all my harmonic and melodic minor scales from the fifth of the dominant all over the neck and that leaves me playing off the 6th or 5th strings. It's too much information that I don't use. Knowing all these scales necessary to follow a chord progression in one position, assigning them to a specific chord progression, helps me retain and make sense out of the scales, and there relevance. Such a simple idea that for some reason escaped me. I've been playing music since I am 4, different instruments, studied with Leni Stern in my 40s, and now at 70 I finally get this!!!! talk about slow!!!! Love your stuff Jens.

Great video Jens, and funny too, the way you had Yngwie running his diminished arpeggios. You know speaking of Yngwie, me and lot of other guitar players I know, were into the Neo Classical metal when we were kids. As a matter of fact, I just recorded an instrumental version of me with the loop pedal improvising over the out from the Alcatrazz song "Suffer Me." I bring up this point because when I made the switch to jazz, it was very easy, cause we had the chops. Alcatrazz had a song called " Too young to die too drunk to live. Yngwies solo starts with a flurry of diminished arpeggios. I learned that song note for note as a kid and from time to time I will use similar arpeggios in Minor swing when I wanna add flash. I have also noticed in Joshco Stephans playing a neo classical influence? I have found that when I take these Neo Classical scale runs, and swing the Rhythm ( if it can be done to some of them ) I can use and re-work these lines. Thx again Jens, your channel is Excellent.

Such a great video again. When you change chords to go from Cmaj to Cmaj does the accompaniment still play’s the original chords? And another question. When you play the flat nine in the second chord it creates tension that can get resolved with the flat nine of the 4th chord of the turnaround. Do you know if there is some kind of mathematical or logic explanation for this? Realy enjoying these lessons ;)
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
Thanks! Since it is meant as a surprising sound and dissonance then it can be ok if the comp doesn't follow, that is a question of taste and the ears/reaction speed of the people you play with, The b9 on A7 resolves to the 5th of Dm7, it has nothing to do with the G7(b9).
@karlderdelinckx
@karlderdelinckx 2 года назад
Maybe i use the wrong terminology then? For my ears the first 2 chords are like a question with a certain dissonance at the end for which there is some answer through the 2 last chords with the other dissonance that for me resolves the question. If i try to swich the last chord with most scale chords i don’t get this resolution.

Hi Jens, my most important advice? Fake it till you make it. That is: 1) If you play a wrong note, repeat it a few times. Repetition legitimizes (says A. N.) and after 3 repeats or more, the chord will probably fit and everybody admires your clever antecipation of the harmonic resolution. 2) If you are lost, play fast chromatics or any outside pentatonics and look for the next tonic or key center to land on. (Sorry, does not work with tunes that have no prominent key center, like Giant Steps or so) 3) Never let it show that you played "wrong" notes, do not shake your head or roll your eyes or shrug your shoulders. 4) Find a convincing ending for your Solo, slow down and land on a chordtone. If you do so, everyone will think you are a total hip badass who knows exactly what he's doing.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
I don't know about this. You actually sound like the guy that everybody hates to play with at jam sessions. Why not make an effort to actually learn instead of trying to fake it (which anyway never really works...)
@gereonH
@gereonH 2 года назад
@@JensLarsen You are right - faking only is not good. The important part is "till you make it". Let me explain: For years I was to scared to play at sessions - even when I was actually not that bad. I already had a good knowledge of harmony and scales. But I was a perfectionist. When I played something that was not in my head and "perfect" I startet to panic. Even when listeners found my playing quite good. And I had gigs where I was disappointed by myself - but had good feedback from others. So I had to convince myself, to go on playing. But I did not believe in me. So I started to trick myself - and it worked. Now I play in 2 Big Bands, one of them was awarded "Best amateur Big Band in the State" - and this band came to me and asked me to be their new guitarist. But still - the voice in my head comes back and tells me: Your'ra a fraud. You're no good" - and then I say to myself "Ok, then I will just fake it" - and that helped me, to play, to find people to play with and to become a better player (and I practised about 4 hours a day for many years)
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
But that is NOT the same as telling people to just go be annoying on a jam session which is essentially what you started out with here.

I would place Solo a little later in the development because I think it is super important to develop your ears, and we usually hear things in a key where solo ignores that and only looks at each chord. To me, that is a little dangerous to leave out if you want to also develop a relationship between the ear and what you play on a song.

@@JensLarsen Yes the ears b4 mechanics also, on Call Response... this is old & somehow instinctive even goes back to early African American "Field Holler" where the pacer yells a verse & the working crew reply with answer... maybe like the drum beat to rowing...? interested in your thoughts..

This is excellent. Thank you so much. I have been playing ekectric guitar for 2.5 years now and find myself leaning into blues jazz. One thing I ahve noticed is that jazz guitar does not bend strings much at all. Why is this?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
Thank you Robert! I don't know why bending is not a part of the style, I suspect it has to do with the strings they used and the sustain of their instruments, but I don't know. It is a little bit like asking why tapping is not very common in Blues.

I also played the Chapman Stick for years and tapping is pretty much all that we do.

Hi Jens. If I’m playing a ii-V-I in G Major with a non altered V, can I use a Cmaj triad over the ii am7 an f#dim triad over the V D7, and an bmin triad over the I Gmaj7? Also, would the other diatonic triads of the chord work? So for example if I’m playing a Cmaj triad over the ii am7 would the 3rd and the 5th of the C triad work? So Emin triad, and Gmaj triad over the ii chord am7? Also does that same idea apply to the V D7 so if I used an f# dim triad over it can I use an Amin triad, and Cmaj triad? Same idea with the I Gmaj7 if I’m using a Bmin triad can I also use a Dmaj triad, and f#dim triad over the Gmaj7? Hope that made sense. By the way, I think you’re an outstanding educator, and love your videos. Sorry for the long comment.

I would consider G7(b9) borrowed from the harmonic major scale
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
Yes, but that is also the key of C minor, right?
@Davide_LP
@Davide_LP 2 года назад
@@JensLarsen Maybe I'm wrong, but I mean that G7(b9) could be considered from the C harmonic major ( this scale is identical to C major but the 6th is minor and not major). Maybe I misunderstood your comment. If you meant that G7(b9) could be considered borrowed from C harmonic minor, then yes, it could also be considered that way.

Ever thought you might be related to Sketch Turner from Comix Zone? The game is so hard to beat. Never beaten it and had it for like 10 years. When should I use the 3 chord? It sounds good going from the I to iii like A/\ to C#-.

@@JensLarsen It's a game made by SEGA, same company that made Sonic. I mean the mediant chord like in A major it sould be C# minor. I never see it in progressions.

@@Euro.Patriot The III chord is quite common as a tonic chord in the key, like III Vi II V. Check out songs like Have You Met Miss Jones or Night And Day.

@@JensLarsen I discovered a cool voicing for an A /\ chord. Just play the open A /\ but use your finger on the e string to play the 7, /\7 or root. Sounds so cool, think it'd be cool with an Asus4 in a progression as an a/\ but with the B open.
