Which Thermometer Pen Do I Use? ThermoWorks vs ThermoPro!

This video is a high level comparison between the popular ThermoWorks MK4 thermometer pen alongside the ThermoPro TP19 and TP19H. The links for the ThermoPro pens are below. The MK4 is the gold standard for many reviewers but the TP19 and TP19H are no slouches either. And given their relative affordability, longer warranty, and magnetic backings, I would definitely recommend giving them a try if the MK4 is out of reach.

For folks wondering why I still chose to buy the MK4 after owning the ThermoPro TP19... I refer you to this quote from ThermoWorks: We design and manufacture the Thermapen Mk4 by hand in the UK in a facility that makes some of the best thermocouples in the world. Every unit is tested and calibrated in an internationally recognized calibration lab. There are a lot of things that we do differently than our competitors and that is what makes us different.

Mk4 is numero uno. I got one a year ago and have never looked back. Worth every penny.

I agree. If I'm looking for accuracy and reliability, I still pick up my MK4 first every time.

Do you know if it has a temperature alarm? THX for answering.
@HuSmokin

Hey Rick. None of the thermometer pens I tested here have built in temperature alarms, however none of them are meant to be kept in the meat either. If you're looking for a pen and alarm combo, I recently saw this one: amzn.to/33pKF2S but I can't vouch for it personally. This one can be used as a pen and programmed with a temp alarm.

I use the TP-19 and think it works just fine. Stepping up into using any of these from guessing or relying on time, etc is going to make a quality difference in your food. And the $30 Thermopro is a huge step up from my old analog 'instant' reads. I like Themopro enough that I have two of the ones w/ a brain box, and cabled probe(s). Still, I'm a maniac and will probably get a Thermoworks down the road, but not priority. Oh.....I also have one of those IR temp guns.....those things are useful.
@HuSmokin
@HuSmokin 5 месяцев назад
Agree with all that. At this point I’ve had the opportunity to try a handful of brands. ThermoPro has consistently been a solid performer at the best price points for me. Which IR temp gun do you have?

Klein, I'm pretty sure. Have misplaced, so can't verify, but think it's just one from HD, not food specific. Good for checking pan skillet/fry pan/wok temps and pizza steel/stones. My main point is even the cheapest digital thermometer is going to up your game over old fashioned 'poke the meat w/ your finger to judge resistance, et al methods. Am a disciple of Kenji. Food Lab is MY bible. You're off to better food w/ any thermometer. Cooking is science. The art of food is tasting for balance, the presentation, and if creative your own recipes or variants of old. Cheers mate.

Just ordered the new "Thermapen One" which is supposedly as fast as one second plus a few tweaks to make it even better. 5 year warranty as well. Can't wait as I've tried and have so many pens that aren't accurate or something going on with them that makes me always say "I should have gotten a ThermaPen"! Well it's time to find out. Nice Vid!

TP19 it is! Thanks for the review. Been using a random brand I picked up from Bed Bad and Beyond for about 5 years. The TP19 sounds like a huge upgrade already. $100 for a thermopen is a way too much. Also the magnetic back is a very nice feature.
@HuSmokin

My thoughts exactly. While I definitely appreciate the testing and certifications behind the Thermapen, for my everyday use I just can’t tell a difference. Thanks for watching!

@@HuSmokin just did a hot water test yesterday, temp around 120F. The TP19 settled in about 3 sec. My BB&B one took 18 sec. No wonder I’ve been overcooking the steak sometimes.

Great vid. I've had a Thermo Pen since 2017 and have had to change the battery twice, Still very accurate. Mine doesn't have the feature where the display flips, that's a nice feature. Considering all of the money that most accessories cost, I don't think that a hundred bucks is out of line, especially since I've owned the one I have for seven years. I might get the boss a Thermo Pro 19 or 19H for the kitchen (She might leave mine alone then).

Thanks Steve! Just shared with another commenter that my TP pens are still holding up strong and are maintaining accuracy alongside my MK4. And truth be told, I'm a lot rougher with the TP pens and they're still holding up just fine.

Even with the sale the MK4 would still be double the price. My TP19 is now going on 3 years strong alongside my MK4. Budget pick still goes to TP19 since its no slouch, but if you have the budget the MK4 is proven.
