The Amex Gold was that hyped up card. The psychology of money is strong and something about having to pay someone money first before buying food never sat right with me. That’s why the Capital One Duo has some thought put into it because they offer a food card for no AF and you can still use those points but only if you pay the fee for their travel card first, and quite frankly that feels a lot better to spend on since travel is a luxury not a necessity like food.

Great video! A coworker and I was having a similar discussion about credit card points a few days ago. He is single and in his late twenties and isn't interested in travel. I'm in the family category and my wife and I want to show the kids there is more to the world than our region. He is not interested in managing multiple cards and which one to use at a given location. He's more likely to use a cash back setup with only one or two cards. While many are interested in the travel, there are many others that would like the cash back setup.

Great video, it's always difficult to make general recommendations for credit cards, but it's also fun to hear other people's opinions on the personalities they attach to cards. I would add that the AMEX Platinum is especially great for solo travelers or those who tend to travel by themselves more often than not since there's no free way to get into most of the lounges offered by the card.

Good video overall! I think it would have helped to also throw in identifications of the demographics for whom CSR is the best option (maybe the big city dweller with ~one flight per quarter?). CSR seems to be a hybrid of the Amex Gold and Platinum cards and suits the persons who wouldn't get very much value out of Amex platinum but want something more than what the Amex gold card provides. Best part was identifying that the VX is top-tier for those who bring a lot of fellow travelers. Amex Platinum is more for those who travel in small groups or alone. The person who flies alone 8x per year and the person who flies once per year with 7 companions are not the same and can benefit differently from different tools.

I’d say I’m firmly planted in group two. Player 2 and I earn in the 250-300k household range but with a little boy and another in the near future we’re much more conscious of our spending habits. Admittedly we have an expensive setup that we min max for earning and status. With that said there’s only one card I think we feel doesn’t fit our lifestyle / regret and that’s the Bonvoy brilliant. I travel for work 55-65 nights a year and in the past that was all Hilton. This year I made Marriott my main hotel brand for work and I just haven’t been impressed. I think it’s a great card for a Marriott loyalist but after having spent so much time with Hilton I just don’t feel great about the switch. I’m going to tough it out for two years and get a few international stays under my belt. However, at this moment 53 nights in I’m pretty meh on the program which also make me feel meh about the card. As a point of reference we’ve done luxury stays in Philly, Chicago, SLC, Miami and NYC. Additionally all my work travel is courtyard, Fairfield, 4 seasons, Sheraton, and JW.

There are a lot of factors here like income in retirement - will it be fixed or smaller than previous years? Will this person have much more time on their hands to optimize credits? what kind of traveling will they be doing? Spending? Myself, I'm 5 years away from "retirement" but I'm pretty sure I will still be working 30-40 hours a week while traveling. @@LukesPointsandMiles I think that going for a travel card with the cost of the AF as the primary criteria is not a great idea for anyone , including retirees. Until it gets nerfed, the Venture X still is the best value among all travel cards, if you can use that $300 travel credit, because of all the travel benefits it does have, but an infrequent, inexperienced traveler might get overwhelmed by the things you can do with it. Maybe a hotel card or airline card might be the best for those looking for a simple setup. One idea is finding a card that just does cash back at 3% for travel, just make sure that it can actually help if you are in a jam overseas.
