Must be some kind of brain implant or nanite injection that interfaces with your central nervous system and forms a USB port on the back of your head. I'm not comfortable with Facebook having this technology. (Upon further consideration, I think the USB port would form somewhere on the face. Because _Facebook._
I don't really understand. The Quest 2's higher resolution is not only harder to drive in general, but the compression will introduce a performance overhead on your pc. For people that only have a midrange PC, say something like a 1070 for example, a Rift S might just have the more clear experience. I think a Rift S is still worth it for someone who's on a budget with a midrange PC and who only cares about PCVR
@@jatoxo The performance overhead should be non-existent if done correctly, as real-time video encoders are on nearly every modern graphics card from AMD and nVidia. Once zero copy mode is enabled on those cards even H265/HEVC should be no problem with near zero performance loss. What I don't understand about the Quest 2 is why it doesn't have the ability to use DisplayPort over USB-C if you have a capable graphics card.
Rift S is actually great, but Oculus made it crap with bugs. I own a Quest 2 but I'm still currently using my Rift S since it's a whole lot more comfortable and I don't have to worry about battery life. Keep in mind I don't buy any Oculus exclusives.
@@unknown_-ed2rs is Rift S really that obsolete? For $150-200 starting to get into VR, I don't think its that bad. If anything...VR as an industry has always been getting the short end of the stick in development
@@Veagence100 it's not necessarily obsolete, but isn't nearly as good as other PC VR headsets (although that isn't its goal). You would be better off buying a quest 2 and using link if you want oculus hardware or are on a tight budget. I would recommend the cosmos, but I am a little biased as the cosmos is what I have.
The average of each placement, or in other words, over all ranking of the headsets is as follows 1: Index, with an average of 4.25/5 for placement 2: Reverb G2, with an average of 3.25/5 for placement 3: Quest, with an average of 3.50/5 for placement 4: Cosmos Elite, with an average of 3.00/5 for placement 5: Rift s, with an average of 1.25/5 for placement Hopefully this is helpful
I actually wouldn't take an Index over a Quest 2 personally, but I'm a bit of a resolution snob. IMO, the Index's wider FOV & better built-in audio just aren't worth giving up literally 50% of your pixels for. 🤷♂️ The Quest 2 is just on a COMPLETELY different level when it comes to sharpness/clarity, even if its image field is notably smaller. Thus I see the Index as one step forward but two steps back. ESPECIALLY when you consider that those much fewer pixels have to be stretched out over an even larger, wider area. I totally agree with Boz (head of Meta Reality Labs [aka what used to be Oculus]) in that pixel density (at least up to a point) is FAR more important in the immediate future to VR immersion than increased FOV. HTC made the right choice to prioritize resolution over FOV with the Vive Pro 2 and I'm hoping that Meta does the same w/ Quest 3 (sure, a moderately higher FOV would obviously be nice, but not if it comes at the expense of additional pixel density!)
@SomeChristianDude I'm genuinely surprised how many people still have this sentiment. You can just use a dummy FB account and then sideload a tool that removes anything FB related. It's not that difficult and worth it if you want high res PCVR for cheap. I've moved on from the Quest 2 to a HP G2 but I've never had problems using a dummy FB account and using the FB removal tool with Oculus Link.
@@Cooe. i am with you on that, i am a resolution snob, i used a mixed reality headset with the same resolution and hated the viewing experience compared to the quest 2. My prorities with a vr display are clarity refresh rate fov
It's kind of nice now that there's several options actually tailored for different kinds of people. Like if you're on the fence, The Quest 2 is the gateway drug. Then I'm sure given time, you want to get into full body tracking and then next thing you know you're slapping down a thousand dollars for a valve index.
A friend of mine who uses an index actually bought a quest 2 just to try out, he now lends it out to people to convert them to VR (it worked on me as I now have an index too!)
Yeah I've had my quest 2 for about 7 months or so and I didn't use it that much in those 7 months. But man when I was having a bad day and decided to go hop in VRchat... best decision I've made in a long time lets put it that way. I've now been playing VRchat almost every day since that bad day happened. Edit: And because I use it for PCVR I am going to get the index and vive trackers.... and maybe some other things for VR as I'd rather spend my time in VR chatting with folks than spend my time in a shitty looking shed with no one to talk to.
Haven’t had a headset since the original oculus rift and just got the quest 2. The change in quality is amazing and I can’t stop using it. Love the choice to play standalone or pc as well as having inside out tracking since I’ll be going back to college in a month and can’t set up any base stations there. Also the jump in lens quality has made vr so much better and I’m starting to play it way more than I used to.
rift s just arrived and im watching this video. ouch EDIT: I’ve had my rift for a nearly a week now and already have a good 20 hours in vr most of it being vr chat. I’m very satisfied with the quality of the screens and headset. I’m able to be in vr for ages compared to my og quest.
bought one brand new earlier this year cuz of covid, I have 100s of hours in vr and and haven't had any problems with the headset itself at all so far so rest assured 👌 it's still as fun as vr can get tbh
Hmm 🤔 I think I’ll buy the quest 2 as I honestly can imagine that there is gonna be huge improvements to vr in the next year and will be a good stepping stone.
Seems the Index is still (specifically of properly commercially available headsets) the go-to headset for the most 'complete' VR setup. The price can't be ignored though and the fact that it isn't sold in some major regions (RIP Australia) is a negative. To summarise as simply as possible, it seems that the Quest 2 is the best entry level set, while the Index is the best enthusiast set.
Yeah thats what I did. I have a quest 2 right now and after experiencing the wonders that is VRchat I am DEFINITELY selling my quest 2 (or maybe not idk) and getting an Index. Not that the resolution of the quest 2 is a trouble for me (I use airlink so I can have a very long play time tethered to the stock charger) as my PC is very powerful but after hearing that the index has almost no noticeable screen door effect, like, SIGN ME THE F UP MAN!
it's defo not trash nor bad, but it just doesn't make sense to buy a rift s right now when you can buy something for cheaper or the same price that is better
I love my rift s I think the quality is good and it doesn’t lag too much but people for no reason go out of their way to hate on you for having a rift s
@@chikalikedis8170 Yeah well isn't this how any PC hardware goes? Also doesn't help that Facebook owns Oculus. I just bought a Rift S cheap on Ebay so I don't see why hating on it now does anyone good.

I got my Index in April after 4 weeks of waiting I knew it was the headset to go for in 2019 after looking around on alternatives for a year. What can I say, still get updates and improvements to graphics and usability I can play for hours in a game like "Into The Radius" and "Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners". Since I am interested in technology I still watch Thrill amongst others and the sweet voice of "you made the right choice" whispering in my ears.
The quest 2 is the best right now for me because I can play pcvr wirelessly with that price with everything else on top. The index is amazing but for the price it needs to be undisputed. I wish a new index would come out next year with a higher res and wireless capabilities.
@@clownavenger0 you can do 120hz on the quest but the resolution makes it really difficult. On top of that Link at 120hz has even more compression artifacts
@@ZetaMAGES Yeah but you got to think realistically, they aren’t just gonna do that as it’s illegal to have accounts getting banned for (No reason at all) it’s because of the bots thinking the Facebook accounts are just troll accounts as they are not getting used where they are actually getting used by the oculus quest. It will be fixed soon, I’ve heard people are getting their accounts unbanned as of next week.
Waisted Sausage Oh that’s good news fortunately. I’m just really looking forwards to some good news regarding the Quest 2, and not just the specs and how good it is.
Crazy how much has changed over only a year. Seamless wireless pcvr with the quest with 120hz refresh rate kind of makes it the only option at this point. And in my opinion, with the higher resolution, high refresh rate and wireless play, the quest 2 basically blows the index out of the water.
In my experience the quest can be extremely hit or miss. My mom’s headset had a damaged fan out of the box that still functions, but only enough to prevent a fire hazard. It gets really hot and makes a loud noise. My brother’s headset lags to death on the home menu so hard he’s actually been put off turning it on and having to deal with the lag. It goes away completely when he gets into a game. And my headset works generally okay, but has some weird performance issues especially when recording, and also is pretty much useless for connecting to a PC. I’ve tried several cables, have an extremely capable computer, and still the resolution is so potatoed that I can literally count pixels of an object that’s two feet away from my face. The distance resolution scaling in a lot of pcvr games also brakes dramatically when I try to use the quest, meaning that if I’m trying to play something like Microsoft flight simulator, I can only go to airports I’ve been to several times before outside of vr, because I literally won’t be able to see the damn runway as anything more than a black shitstain until I get too close to pull out of any kind of landing attempt. All around, just a really poor experience with these headsets. All of these are relatively new (my mom’s has the most glaring issue and is also the newest), and they’re all relatively low-use. They just kinda arbitrarily suck. Obviously all just my experience, but I’m excited for a future when I may be able to try a new headset, especially a valve index. The native res might be lower, but because of the weird problems my headset has with pc, I guaranteed it will be a night and day difference in the actual resolution.
Sound quality, controller tracking, no compression, headset comfort, steam integration... The Quest doesn't blow shit. It's a 3D printed piece of plastic. It's great value but definitely not better.
im running a 1070 and ryzen 5 2600x with an index, so it should be good in case you care if you have that kinda hardware. otherwise, move it up (i still use my og vive over the index still until this day anyways, index sucks for comfort for my glasses, sad day)
@@mastersergant1287 What refresh rate and resolution do you play at? I have an overclocked 1070 with a 3700x, I wanted to upgrade my GPU but can't really do that for obvious reasons. I would love to get something like the reverb g2 but I don't think my PC can run it well, same with the Index.
To be honest I'm watching this after buying a VR Headset and I've chosen the quest 2 mostly for the wireless pc vr capabilities, the standalone capabilities and well the price and tbh this guide kind of confirms what I thought before hand, the index is superior but kinda expensive and not as easy to carry around and use in different places + wired while the quest 2 is hands down the best bang for the buck and especially for VR noobs like me a great point to start.
I'm surprised you've had so much trouble with the Rift S. I've spilled drinks on mine, fallen asleep in them with my glasses on, had it fall off a bookshelf, and have yeet'd the controllers straight across my apartment - other than purely cosmetic damage on the outer shell it still works like new and has been compatible with all software I've tried on it so far lol. Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble tho. Keep up the great work, love the content! :)
Decagear will be awesome unless it's tracking is another cosmos. Though, it will use an older type strap and has no audio solution so it won't be as comfortable as others, but then again, at 450$ it's cheap.
This video may be a bit older now but still feels super reliable. Also browsing through your RU-vid channel it seems you mostly stuck around with the Quest 2 and Index still which helps me go into a certain direction with my first VR purchase. Still trying to figure it out tho, hardcore gamer, got a solid PC and just want to dive into a new world of gaming with great visuals and general VR experience.
I have the quest 2 as my first headset. And i am really enjoying it . The price is really great for what you get. All I did was get the Audio strap Frankenquest and a 16 foot link cable (don’t waste money on the oculus one, its over priced) . To make the oculus more comfortable because the strap it comes with is so uncomfortable and painful So i have a pretty good PC , but my GPU is old and because of all the scalping i can’t upgrade yet. I have a 1060 6Gb and with the quest 2 I actually can play Half life Alyx at high setting . And it runs pretty smooth. The fact that you can play wireless too is legit awesome, and frankly the facebook argument really don’t bother me. Who doesn’t have a facebook account these days anyways..probably a small percentage of people living in modern society. But regardless What I did is , I setup a new facebook account for solely entertainment purpose and that works fine by me. I do wanna try the valve index tho, to see how different it actually is because if i was to upgrade i was thinking of the valve index or maybe the valve index 2 when it comes out and also because Half life Alyx is my favorite game
This is my favorite video on the channel ! It’s perfect on telling you what vr headset is for you! I’m getting the oculus quest 2 but I think there all awesome!!
That won't come out until summer of 2021, and COVID-19 will probably be over with by then since there are vaccines out now. Do you really want to miss out on half a year of VR gaming waiting?
@@nervaproject I don't, but I don't like the compromises on all the headsets out right now. The Index is too expensive, the Reverb G2 doesn't have a great range of tracking because of camera placement, and the Oculus Quest 2 has *facebook* .
@@PNolandS I don't think the Index is too expensive. The Index headset itself only costs $500, which is typical for a VR headset. The added price to the Index is for base stations and the awesome Index controllers, which are light-years ahead of what anyone else has on the market. They cost $500 because they're the best, and they're worth it. They are so worth it that other headset producers like Pimax, JVC, and HTC Vive are making their headsets compatible with the Index controllers or in some cases selling their headsets bundled with the Index controllers. This means if you get the full Index kit now and then a few years down the road a new headset comes out with a huge FOV and resolution, there is a good chance you'll be able to use your Index controllers and base stations with your headset upgrade. So about $500 worth of your $1000 Index purchase gets carried over to your next headset and gets re-used, potentially... adding value to your NEXT virtual reality headset purchase. The $1000 price tag looks a lot more reasonable when you consider half of it potentially gets re-used on your next headset purchase.
@@nervaproject I get the controllers are good, but given that im about to head off to college next year im going to be moving around a lot for the foreseeable future. No matter how good the controllers are, they're just going to be more trouble than they're worth (for me).
@@PNolandS More trouble than they're worth because of the price, or more trouble than they're worth because of the need to set up base stations and stuff? Also, if you're going to college next year, that sounds like a good reason to play VR right now... because you won't have time when you start college. And you don't want to be distracted with thinking about or playing on a VR headset while you're in college. (Trust me I know from personal experience... the desire to try out VR can screw up a semester). It's better to play whatever games you want to play before you go so that it won't distract you and you can "get it out of your system" as people say. Are you starting in Fall of 2021?
I totally agree, and with the addition of air link why would you get anything else. Sure there are things that are slightly better then it on other headsets, but not $600 worth.
Thing is between rift s and quest 2 good luck running the quest 2 on a budget gaming pc, meanwhile rift s will be fine. Also better strap, its directly displaying the image so it might as well look very similar while being much less demanding. Sure less features but simpler and easier to run.
The fact Valve made the Index is what is going to change my mind, I'd much prefer comfort and ease of use over anything else (plus the index is apparently the most comfortable one to wear)
I currently have a rift cv1 and never use it because it is just so horrible. The Index looks great, but my problem with it is all the reports of serious reliability issues it has
@@mahe4 you are on youtube... be it on a phone, laptop, tablet or whatever. I dont care how careful you think you are, you are already being spied on. The quest is just the next device to do it.

My issue with the quest 2 is less the privacy concerns, and more the fact that facebook can just go "nah your headset is unusable now" at any time, which i'm not okay with.
My Knuckle broke just some days ago, I contacted them and in 1 day I've sent them the controller and apparently I'll be receiving a completely new one, so yeah the support's really good but becareful if you play something where you're supposed to punch real hard breh.

@@videogamesart8057 I think I’ll wait for the index 2 to see if they have the same quality issues as they did last time. If they don’t I’ll probably get that
In FOV with the G2 and Index, it doesn't matter too much because in video games you focus more on a certain object or objective. Peripherals help a lot, don't get me wrong. Being able to see a combine in Half-life Alyx 10 degrees farther to the right or left will help, however most people aren't trained enough to notice and react to that sort of stimuli to the eye. Another thing about the G2, it doesn't need a 2080 Super in order for it to be super clear. The headsets do have their own processors to help with their own individual resolutions. You may be able to run the G2 resolution on a 2060 super and allow it to be super clear. The only thing that would hinder it is the graphical fidelity. It can still be super clear but have worse graphics.
I think ThrillSeeker's recommendation against buying the Rift S is right given the options, but it's not a terrible headset, and is currently my preferred headset. The quest 2 may have a higher resolution panel, but this is a compressed image coming through a USB cable vs a raw DisplayPort feed. Carmack said in a keynote that you will always notice the compression artifacts. While it is easier to put on the Quest 2, it's front heavy nature makes it uncomfortable fairly quickly. The Rift S is a bit tricky to get on just right, but once I do I could wear it literally all day. I could take a nap in this thing with the right pillow haha. If your eyes fit within the IPD, and your goal is truly only PCVR gaming, the Rift S is the most affordable and most comfortable PCVR headset bar none.
im so glad to be a late cv1 buyer. the thing is super robust and has great sound, and the headphones have the perfect shape to sleep in it comfortably. there is a slight nose gap where you can see through, which is great for drinking or using your phone. 10/10 best purchase i ever made
I got a rift s instead of the quest 2 because of its battery, i dont want to be limited to 2 hours. I mostly play rec room all day, and some other games too.
I already have a kinect along with an xbox i dont use, so maybe i can sell the xbox for like 100 dollars(since its an old xbox) and keep the kinect of it then save up for a quest two AND BOOM I GOT A FULL VR SET UP FOR 200 DOLLARS
I've have just purchased an Rift s (On sale) a few days ago because I wanted to try the VR experience. On the first day i got everything set up with playspace steam vr etc. Then came weekend and I started playing at 12pm, and what felt like minutes was actually hours of gameplay. I've literally got stopped because the sun had gone down and the headset lost tracking of the playspace. When I'm done building my new pc I will definitely upgrade to something better with fullbody tracking. VR is just awesome.
Thanks for the helpful video! I plan to get a vr headset after I get a gaming PC in 2 months! I think the index would be best for me because my main goal of getting a headset is specifically for vr chat. I appreciate you doing this sort of thing for everyone who watched your content!
i just got my hp reverb g2 today and was so exited. now i feel like i have to get the base stations and the valve controllers to make it feel right tho.
I was thinking of getting an Index for VRChat, an I was going to get an Quest 2 for when I go over to a friend's house. Thanks for the quide, I bought an Rift S before I watched this, an I totally agree with you, though I got mine for $150 so I paid for what I get haha, but yeah it's uncomfortable after a while, an the foam easily comes off after playing for a week, an the refresh rate is noticeable when everyone else is fine but, I'm still loading, an the visuals aren't great, after a while it hurts my eyes, an it get blurry, but still it was better than nothing I guess, though now I'm going to give it to a friend along with my old pc, cause I plan to get a new one, thanks again for the info keep up the good work. :D
it depends, for me its much more worth it the rift S since now its at the same price and you dont need the cable, unless you want to show the vr in other places its better an easy to use the rift S than the quest 2 since you need a much better pc to run it
I've asked for an Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas, let's hope I get it! I'll make an edit tomorrow to update you if I get it or not! Edit! I got it! I’ve played on it for around 2 hours now, loving it! Let my family try it out and they were amazed!
Thanks for the video, I'm planning on upgrading my CV1 to an Index. Only thing that worries me is that although steam's tool to check if your pc can run the index says my pc can, I think my graphics card barely meets that requirement( RX580) and don't know if that will be an issue.
I have an RX570 and most VR games I’ve played ran absolutely fine on my Reverb G2, which has a higher resolution than the Index. Just don’t expect to get 90fps super consistently, especially in higher quality games. (also I don’t play that many graphically impressive VR games so take my advice with a grain of salt 😅)
Dude an RX 580 is perfectly fine for VR. Think I'm crazy? I, for shits and giggles, plugged my quest 2 into my laptop (i5 7300hq, GTX 1050 4GB) and got a not great but usable experience with lighter VR games. And that 1050 is more like a 1030 GDDR5 on the desktop. So yeah you're good man!
Quest 1 is good budget alternative to Rift S. Quest 1 has full IPD ajustment, you can connect it using usb 3.0 cable to PC and it has two seperate OLED displays (Quest 2 has one LCD screen).
I have a mid range pc. I bought a used rift s. And im not disappointed. Dont get your hate on it. Only thing bothering me is motion sickness since i used it only a few Times now. Mic and speakers are ok. Tracking is easy to Setup and get used to. Its easy to play and have fun. Would recommend if: you have a mid range pc Dont want to or cant setup external sensors Just want to play
I bought the Quest 2 when it came out. Once I got it set up to play wirelessly on my PC it legit is the best atm. Connect VR desktop, start sidequest, connect headset via cable, start wireless ip connection and BOOM. CLEAN wireless gaming on games like Phasmaphobia, Skyrim, DOOM VR etc. Got myself the Rebuff strap battery and the elite headstrap and I can just game for hours straight. I live in Canada and all that costed me about $650 all together when said and done. Would recommend it to anyone who wants a wireless experience with a good PC. Still gonna buy the Valve Index when they release their wireless headset attachment 🤞
It’s my first time in pcvr and I want to play games like Pavlov and vr chat, I have been thinking to buy the oculus quest 2 but now I hear people say that it’s bad, but it’s cheap and wireless, what should I buy?
@Sargent Winter alright lol. could potentially be a port issue. running an rtx 2070 and ryzen 7 3700x paired with 16 gigs. no crashes, and i'm even using the quest 1 cable (albiet Quest 2 headset) which is usb 2.0
So as someone new to VR, I bought a Rift S before I found this channel. I have been loving all the content on this channel since finding it and my only question to the VR community is did I buy the wrong VR set? Because after watching all these videos it seems lik I might have rushed to much on my purchase, as a noob to it all I pretty much just saw VR and hit buy now.
I couldn't stand to wear the quest 2 for more than 15 minutes, adjusting it every 3-5 minutes to a new awkward position. I have been using a quest 1 for a long time with little issue. I upgraded the strap for q2 and it's great now. Just consider the replacement strap as mandatory.
If it's working properly for you, I think you'll have a good time for quite some time to come. (And I actually kinda prefer the slightly smaller touch controllers of the Q1 and Rift S, getting used to it, but still)
"worst issue other than needing a facebook account" uh no i think that's the worst issue and is a complete deal breaker for the Quest 2 for anybody that has managed to abstain from having a facebook account.
Personally I went from rift S to Quest 2 and can say if you have: •a good pc •$80 for a link cable or a stable Ethernet connection on your local network •some spare cash then absolutely go for it, the quest 2 offers a great standalone and PCVR experience for the price, the only issues I have with it is the battery, easily fixable with a nearby wall outlet and long usb-c cable.
as a rift s owner for about 2 years, i don't think it's that bad. yes i get some tech issues but most of them are fixed by unplugging and replugging the headset. and also you don't even notice the "bad" graphics. for someone who just wants plug and play the rift s is a good option if you want a pc vr headset without base station tracking. i still think the full 500 euro i bought it for is worth it
