Imagine being told not to make eye contact with a celebrity and actually listening. Nobody is better than you in this world. There is nobody on the planet that has the right to make you feel like you are less than them. @lt0295
@lt0295 3 года назад
Exactly. Especially child celebrities. You have to consider the fact that most of them have NEVER experienced something even resembling a normal life. Ever. And even people that became famous at a later age, it may be decades since they lived a normal life. That’s why so many of them seem so incredibly out of touch with reality. And that’s also probably why 90% of them have the exact same run-of-the-mill opinions on politics and other issues. It’s annoying to all of us people that have a normal life, but it’s honestly hard to fault them for it, because they literally have not a single clue what real life is like.

I liked the whole tipping discussion, it's very true that America has a very extensive tipping etiquette that I haven't experienced anywhere else. From my trips to the states I've been used to tipping basically anyone who do something for me, such as tour guides, barbers, waiters, house keepers, bellhops, and many more. In Europe tipping is appreciated, but not expected. We usually leave a 10% tip in restaurants with table service, but everyone are paid a proper salary and therefore don't depend as much on tips. It's also true about Japan, they don't have a tipping etiquette whatsoever, because they believe service shouldn't cost extra. However, Japanese tourists abroad are some of the most pleasant people I've ever met, and they always come very well prepared and abide by other countries norms and customs.

I didn't know that you're expected to tip so much in America. Coming from Germany it's pretty different over here. I mean you can give a tip but it's usually not that high compared to American standards. I remember being in a hotel and getting my stuff to my room. I wanted to be nice so I gave him a 20 dollar tip. He took it and kinda waited for something, I just took my stuff and he just went away. When I looked up how much you have to tip someone to bring your stuff in America I understood his reaction. But like a ~18 Euro tip is not expected in Germany. Maybe in some hotels but those would be 4star hotels. So European fellows, look up how much tip is excepted. Btw. Some guy that I didn't tip enough for my first meal in America said something like "you're from Europe so you must have much money" that's not true at all. But it could have been just those two people that were kinda stinky. It was a really nice trip though America. Papa bless.

The reason a high tip is expected in restaurants is because the servers are paid well below minimum wage. My sister waits tables and she gets paid less than $5 an hour and she’s also single with no children so she gets taxed something like 33% of that hourly wage. They entirely rely on tips to survive. Hotel staff is usually paid at least minimum wage, sometimes slightly more depending on the hotel, but even then it’s usually less than $15 an hour. I worked at a regular hotel chain (as in not a luxury hotel) for a few months and I was only paid $8.25 an hour which is no longer a livable wage, especially after taxes. The people who own these chains/businesses won’t pay a living wage so they put the responsibility on the customer to make sure their staff can afford to live. It’s really messed up, especially in places like California and New York where you would have to work 3x the hours you can get to just make rent. $15 an hour in California sounds good until you realize that a house that would be worth less than $200k in the south or Midwest sells for over a million dollars in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and the surrounding areas. My boyfriend and I just bought a house for $140k. A house with the same square footage, acreage and amount of rooms in Los Angeles would be worth $2-3mil and minimum wage here is $7.25/hour. The pay doesn’t make sense for cost of living in a lot of American cities.

@@elsharkone7 most waitering jobs in Europe are minimum wage, unless you work in a top place in Central capital of a country, per say NOBU in London. But I think it's generally accepted in Europe that a) you tip if you can afford it and b) you assess how much you tip bases on the quality of the waiter's service. Some places have sort of a "tip" added to the bill if you spend over a certain amount. But the worst, which I only encountered in England, is when waiters have to share the tips with everyone in the restaurant (including the managers). So in those cases I just tend to be REALLY clear when I tip the waiter so they can keep the money to themselves.
