Who Did It Better? - Bobby Womack vs Rod Stewart (1975/1978)

Tonight we compare Bobby Womack's deep album cut, "(If You Want My Love) Put Something Down On It" from 1974 to Rod Stewart's #1 Disco smash, "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" 3:38 from 1978. The song featured on Stewart's album Blondes Have More Fun, and was released as a single in November 1978. It spent one week at the top of the British charts in December 1978 and four weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1979. Billboard ranked it number four on its Top Singles of 1979 year-end chart. It also topped the charts in Australia for two weeks. Rolling Stone ranked the song at #308 in its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
Often when a record becomes a hit, there is tons of litigation accusing plagiarism. In the case of Rod Stewart's recording, he settled out-of-court with Womack, as well as Jorge Ben, for allegedly lifting the melody and string arrangements. Jorge Ben's 1972 recording of "Taj Mahal" 9:08 is included as the third track for comparison.
Stewart admitted in his 2012 autobiography to "unconscious plagiarism" of the Ben Jor song, which he had heard while attending the Rio Carnival in 1978.[2] He also admitted that he had consciously lifted the song's signature synthesizer riff from the string arrangement on Bobby Womack's "(If You Want My Love) Put Something Down On It". Stewart contends that it is legal to lift a line from any song's arrangement as long as the core melody line isn't copied.
Again, this case has long since been settled. No long diatribes on cultural appropriation or Disco music. Simply, Who did it Better? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.

I remember when Rod Stewart's song was played on all of the Black radio stations in the 70s. All of the British Invasion artists have paid homage to Black American R and B, Soul, Gospel and Blues singers and musicians. These British singers and musician stated that they were influenced by Black entertainers. I think that both songs are different and I love both the Bobby Womack and Rod Stewart songs. This is my first time hearing of Jorge Ben.

Rod was better. Bobby is a legendary artist but his song sounded like an album filler. Rod is an undeniable hit. Now Jorge Ben... He is amazing on another lever to me. I fell in love with him exactly 10yrs ago. His version isn’t up for comparison but if it was, I’d choose him. Overall I think that Rod did what everyone did and does. He heard something that spoke to him and made it his by taking elements from the songs that resonated with his soul.

Matt Sherv when ppl wrote songs they often stole the hook instrumental to write a band new song to but still you can hear the melody underbelly with the movement of the chord structure . I hope Bobby got a good share of the royalty from Rods version . Ben is actually vining the melody also . Rob needs to keep paying those royalties & pass it on to Bobbies family keep paying up every year cos Rods version is still getting played in clubs and radio and on line every day around the world . That's at least 200k a year .

For those of you who don't get it, Rod Stewart stole the instrumental part from Bobby and the singing melody part from Ben Jorge. So, for those of you who are thinking that Ben Jorge's version is the newest one, YOU ARE WRONG. Ben 1st (1972), Bobby 2nd (1974), Rod 3rd (1978). Read people, read!!
