I know how the bell ringers died. First one had no arms, so he ran full tilt at the bell, so as to hit it with his head. One day he missed, and fell from the tower to the town square. The townspeople gathered around to identify him. One guy said, “I’m not sure who he is, but his face rings a bell.” In his honor, his brother took over the job. One day, he too met an untimely demise, and the townspeople gathered again to wonder who he was. “I can’t remember his name,” said one, “but he’s a dead ringer for his brother.”

I have a copy of my family tree that dates back almost 160 years and because so many of my relatives lived in the midwest and lived as farmers over the last two centuries MANY of the ''accidental deaths'' were listed as: "Smothered in an elevator.'' Meaning a grain elevator had somehow opened above them when they were shoveling feed and they were buried in corn or wheat or some other grain. A shocking number of people died this way and ''smothered in an elevator'' has always seemed to me, like an Agatha Christie murder plot involving a necktie or shoe lace and of course, an elevator.

C'mon.. we've all been so drunk we couldn't recognize a dart board before. Heck, I've been drunk enough not to recognize a dart to the head before! I'm not Rhod's dad, btw.

I'm willing to bet good money they had Vinnie Jones on the klaxon.

Actually, the Nuclear Launch device that accompanies the US President at all times is called the Football. That would make the US President the most dangerous football player by far.

I don’t know exactly how many bell ringers died this way, but church bell towers were commonly struck by lightning, which sometimes killed bell ringers. Franklin’s lightning rods made this somewhat safer by channeling that lightning to the ground, and Franklin lived after the 16th century, so these may be the accidental deaths to which Sandi refers.

It’s not THAT specific to study accidental death in 16th century England. That’s a period of 100 years! Today we have have departments full of people who study accidental deaths on a yearly basis.

As kids my mate was sober - well he was only about nine - and standing on a wooden box on which we had chalked a target roundel. As I threw my dart at the box he panicked and jumped off Took ages to get the dart out of his knee ....... He wanted to go home to his mum to grass me up but fortunately he couldn't walk until we got the dart out. Mind you, even when he was a teenager he was still what the Germans apparently refer to as a 'Teletubbyzurückwinker'.

My first thought of "death by churchbell" was likely getting so massive a concussion from being so close to them over time that it scrambled their brains - leading either to falling off, or just dying due to their brains being turned into pudding.

There’s a couple of really interesting questions QI did one on boxing and one in the D series about cheerleading being really dangerous. Don’t get me wrong I love sport. However, contact sport is still quite unsafe in many aspects, sadly money is more important than safety.

I suspect most of the bell ringing deaths were due to lightning.

How specifically does someone “accidentally” die while being stabbed with a knife during a football tackle? That’s like saying someone died tragically because their wife was cleaning their shotgun

Also the 1969 war between El Salvador/Honduras and the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s were inflamed by events at professional football matches. The former is even known as the ‘Football War’.
