The truth about Jon Arryn's death.
WARNING FOR MASSIVE SPOILERS SEASON 4!
This video is mostly for people who have watched season 4 but who have not read the books, and who feel a bit confused about who exactly participated in Jon Arryn's death and how. His murder, and the false leads about it, made quite a complex plot!
I hope this video will help! =)

"Stinkfinger" (as I like to call him) is the most dangerous scheming c**t in all of Westeros. Now that Walder Frey is toast, Littlefinger might be wiped out or remain an ally of the Starks. And this is why seasons 1-4 remain a masterclass in television series done well. It's so legendary, it took a while for the fanbase to realize the last three seasons are a masterclass in crappy dialogue, bad pacing, and character destruction. Btw, what I find even more fascinating is the fact Pycelle is not the absent-minded incompetent fool he pretends to be, but he's very much aware of everything and the only person to see through that was Tywin.

Cersei's evil thing was just her having kids with Jaime while passing them off as Robert's children. Joffrey, as a child born from incest, was psychopathically insane and that was how Ned was killed. Even with all the machinations of Littlefinger, if Joffrey had been somewhat sane, he would've kept his promise not to kill Ned Stark when he apologized for his "treason". But Joffrey, insane as he was, chopped off Ned's head on a whim, thereby starting the calamities of GoT.

Honestly as much as I appreciate the plot, I've come to hate how unrealistic it is. The timings and things working out are way too convenient for most of this to even happen. For instance how is Robert so unaware that joffrey tommen and myrcella are not his true children? And surely stannis would have thought of a better way to inform his brother? Why would stannis only tell one person. And even if the information did somehow reach Robert to be true, and cersei and Jaime received justice accordingly, how, in any way, would that help stannis in his claim? Robert could just wed another of a great house and father heirs...
@marciomoreira3165
@marciomoreira3165 5 лет назад
Praelyx stannis only found out after ned told him. So he never had the chance to inform king robert. As littlefinger said in the end of the video, he profits from chaos. He created this chaos in order to climb the "ladder" since all the lords and ladies were too busy mourning or celebrating jon's death.
@PapaSmurff660
@PapaSmurff660 5 лет назад
@@marciomoreira3165 ok another thing if you don't mind, why would stannis have his suspicions in the first place? What were his goals exactly? Let's say stannis (or someone through him) was able to convince Robert about the truth regarding his children. Jaime and cersei get punished, and likely Robert marries a new suitable wife similar to the power cerseis family had. They would make children who would then be heirs to the throne.. in my eyes stannis wanted to uncover the truth about Roberts children so he could have a better claim to the throne.. but that seems kinda illogical given what I just said. So I guess my main question is what were stannis motivations because they seem unclear to me
@marciomoreira3165
@marciomoreira3165 5 лет назад
Well, Stannis was allways a very honorable man so I don't think that he intended to claim the throne in any way before robert's death. He only started caring about his claim after rob died and also because his younger brother renly proclaimed himself king. If robert wouldn't have died I believe he wouldn't even care about rob's bastard heirs.

Do people STILL not realize after 6 seasons that Littlefinger is the hero of this story? You do understand that monarchy, feudalism, and conservatism towards middle age values is HORRIBLE for society right? LF is actively looking to destroy this world and build one where love, merit, and trade override birth, class-ism, and entitlement. "In a better world where love could overcome duty..." "If you want to build a better world, you must first demolish the old one" The world he lives in isn't worth saving as we know from history. It needs to be destroyed and a better world needs to be created where those of low birth buy high IQ can thrive without needing to murder their way to recognition...like the modern Western World. Expect LF to die a tragic death in the 2nd to last episode of the series and in the final episode for it to be revealed that he did everything that he did to tear down this terrible world and achieve the iron throne in order to dissolve it and bring democracy to Westeros in Severus Snape esque swerve with Cat playing the role of Lily and Sansa playing the role of Harry.

But in littlefingers plan the high born lady would have been Cat, he probably already had a plan to kill Lysa. Cat getting killed was not apart of Littlefingers plan. Chaos is uncontrollable so the plan he set into motion probably had to be changed a few times.
@ayyo1579
@ayyo1579 8 лет назад
I think LF's initial plan was: He wanted to save Sansa, bring her to the Vale and marry Lysa. Hide out there while the Stark-Lannister wars went on and be a good father to Sansa. Plot the murder of Lysa and blame it on someone else there (like he does in the book) and then take control of the Vale via Robin. Then commit the Vale to ride to the Stark's defense as Lysa refused to do (on orders from Petyr) to make it look like he was faithful to the Starks. Use the Vale forces to defeat the Lannisters, but ensure Robb Stark dies in the conflict. That leaves the Iron Throne open, himself as the patriarch of the Vale and no male heir for the North. He would use his father-daughter relationship with Sansa and the riding in to "save" the Starks to convince Cat to marry him and then arrange the marriage of Sansa to Robin (his daughter and son by law with the blood lines of Stark, Tully, and Arryn between them) to sit Robin on the Iron Throne, while he serves as Hand and Regant. Petyr would have Cat, the North, the Vale, and the Riverlands (revenge against the Starks, Arryns, and Tully patriarchs who he feels wronged him). Robin and Sansa as King and Queen would be his faithful surrogate children/puppets, and he would be the power behind the throne like Tywin was. When Cat died, he had to shift Sansa from his daughter role to his love interest role and himself to be King instead of Robin and just use Robin to help his machinations in consolidating the North, Vale, and Riverlands. I still think Petyr would prefer to be the power behind the throne rather than on the throne, so I think his ultimate plan now is to get Sansa on the throne and he will play that off as him "sacrificing the throne for her" to try to win her over.
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
+Ay Yo GREAT summary. I almost completely agree with you - except I do believe he always wanted to sit on the throne. He just knows that any obvious contender for the throne is in constant danger, so he wants to stay in the shadows until he has annihilated absolutely anyone who would object to his coronation.
@ayyo1579
@ayyo1579 8 лет назад
SelvesteSand I'm not entirely sure he wants to sit on the throne because he is smart enough to know he would never be able to completely eliminate all threats (as he himself knows being a threat in the shadows after Robert Baratheon thought he had done the same in eliminating all). As such I think he just wants to control everything from behind the scenes forever. Also to him the game is actually more interesting than the prize at the end itself. I think he would be bored actually sitting on the throne and ruling. Instead he has been constantly mentoring Sansa and putting pictures in her mind about how she deserves power because he wants to seat her on the throne and rule, while he can be her King consort and hand and run everything in the shadows and have her complete trust and devotion. It would allow him to keep playing the game even after climbing to the top of the ladder (what he was born to do) and also constantly look out for and neutralize threats to Sansa's claim, and hence fulfill his desire to be her "savior/protector" the way he could never be to her mother.
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
+ Ay Yo I just realized he can sit on the throne without being king; we've often seen Tywin sit on it as Joffrey's representative. That might be exactly what he wants - the ultimate power but without the title "king". I'm not sure he'd be bored ruling - that's hard to tell - but if he will, I'm not sure he has realized that yet. :P
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
+Ay Yo Oh, there's more to your comment than what showed up in my e-mail notification. I think king consort would be perfect for him. That or whatever he is to the Vale as Robin's stepfather. The person in power but not the person you need to kill for a coup. As long as he doesn't have the title "king", he can survive a coup.

WHen LF started kissing Lysa after she mentioned letter to Cat, he knew, he has to kill her now, she got too dangerous! It was his plan all along anyway to kill her AFTER getting married to her to take hold of the Vale as well.
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
You can spot a very well-concealed hint of panic in his face when Lysa starts talking out loud about what they did. He's like "shit, shut up, people could be listening, is someone listening?, I gotta shut her up somehow, fine I'll kiss her" :P That likely hastened her demise, yes - although her threat to kill Sansa was the last drop. He couldn't let her live another minute for that. He lost Catelyn and would not want to risk losing Sansa too.
@Regina-Phalange
@Regina-Phalange 8 лет назад
SelvesteSand Well I partially agree with you on Sansa. Yes he didnt want to lose Sansa not because he lost Caitlyn and he had feeling for her but rather because Sansa is the key to the north! Otherwise LF doesnt give 2 cents about her.
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
+Regina Phalange (OMFG I just noticed your name, I love you) No way. After taking Winterfell, Petyr could've imprisoned Jon and sent Sansa to Cersei, after which he'd be Warden of the North by royal decree. Finally, all the scheming was paying off big time - and he turned the opportunity down and chose Sansa instead. Sure, he still wants power, but he wants Sansa enough to put power-grabbing on hold - and that seems to be the first time he hasn't ruthlessly done anything it took to gain power. Sansa is more important to him.
@Regina-Phalange
@Regina-Phalange 8 лет назад
SelvesteSand Thank you for you love :D LF cant "imprisoned Jon and sent Sansa to Cersei" before marching to Winterfell for their aid, LF opening announce his allegiance to the Stark, he said it himself to Sansa so he cant do that. Also Knights of the Vale follow Robin not LF, and RObin commanded to help Sansa so KotV wont obey LF, if he were to command Jon's or Sansa's arrest. Also, he cant just imprison Jon, he is the King in the North and has many houses backing him up.
@SelvesteSand
@SelvesteSand 8 лет назад
There's something wrong with the left phalange in your arguments, Ms. Regina. :P First off, Petyr only figuratively announced his allegiance to Stark by helping them retake Winterfell and then not sending Sansa to Cersei as promised. It was exactly in the moment when he chose Sansa over power, as mentioned in my previous comment, that he declared that allegiance. Secondly, I doubt the Knights of the Vale in Petyr's army know of any specific orders from Robin. They probably just know they're being commanded by Petyr (Lord Protecter of the Eyrie and the Vale of Arryn) on decree by Robin and King Tommen, and disobeying his commands would be treason. His army probably made up 95% of the survivors of the battle of Winterfell, so he could've easily taken Winterfell for himself if he wanted to. Thirdly, Jon wasn't King in the North yet - and he only has people backing him up because he won the battle and Sansa and Petyr support him. Manderly, Glover and the rest had refused to help Jon because they thought it was a lost cause, and if Jon had been captured or killed, they'd have been right about it. They probably wouldn't exactly be thrilled about Petyr capturing Jon and Sansa, but they'd be happy to have him instead of the Boltons - not to mention that he would be Warden of the North by decree of King Tommen. Nothing stood between Petyr and being Warden of the North - nothing except the sacrifice of Sansa's life.

Littlefinger's character shows how much GRRM cares about reality. For him, all the other characters are just like the audience and vice versa. We know something and think that we know it all when its not the case. No one really is in control and sometimes because of small things, huge things commemorates. Maybe even Littlefinger was the most dangerous man in Westeros, maybe he set in motion the whole series in some way or other, maybe he was a really great player in the Game of Thrones, maybe he actually had done more than we know. A character so deep, that he really was untrustable by even his aides (LYSA). But his death in S07 was so real because even he didn't see that coming. Sometimes big things die out small. And even being one of the most dangerous man, he could not know how he will die. Though in a dramatical point of view, Little finger should have died with giving up more crucial information (not right before death tho) but that is the whole point of GOT. Oberyn dies so dreadfully even though he was a good guy, and hence in the opposite side of the coin Littlefinger, who was one of the worst-minded (acted awesome by Gillen) characters of GOT dies a simple consented death though unexpected by him. Anyway beautiful video brother.

Lysa also had denied involvement to the war, and not allowing Robb to get to North through the Vale and then Narrow Sea. People think it is because of her being too paranoid about her son. The truth is, Littlefinger doesn't want the Knights of the Vale to enter the battle and give the upper hand in numbers to Robb. Robb was outnumbered since the get-go. Riverlands aren't that strong, and the North doesn't contain the population of, say Reach.

This all a very interesting theory and it makes so much sense. So to get things straight here: All that has transpired from season 1 to present is because of Littlefinger and Lysa Arryn? Ned Stark wouldn't go to the capital if Jon Arryn hadn't died and he wouldn't have gotten his head cut off, etc, etc.... Although, I still doubt Lysa's motives because of the book and since this is the TV show, I'm gonna go that Lysa was lied and manipulated to by Littlefinger. This is what I believe to be Littlefingers motives: He started all of this 'Chaos' because he is in love with Catelyn Stark and is overly jealous that Ned has her as his wife. Which makes kind of sense to put all this into motion because he knew that Jon and Ned was close and he knew that Ned would go to the capital. He also knew that if Jon died, Robert would put Ned as hand of the king. Giving Ned some advice and evidence to go on, would eventually lead him to his death by Cersei and Joffrey, although, Cersei did not anticipate that Joffrey would go nuts and have Ned Stark executed. I think his motives because of his love for Catelyn makes more sense. Even in his deluded mind in season 2, he travels to Catelyn to give her Ned's remains and he attempts to actually get her there and then. I wonder what length he will go to to get what he wants. So here's my final thought why Littlefinger started all of this: He just wanted some ass from Catelyn. Not sure if this makes any sense or not. :P

Getting dat ass from Catelyn (and after her death Sansa) is LF's #2 goal in life. His #1 is to climb the ladder all the way to the iron throne through chaos.

Simply said. Littlefinger knew that Lysa is loving him and that she is weak. He got the Harrenhold and used Lysa. He became her husband this would not be possible if the Jon Arryn would be alive. Now he has the Harrenhold and he is the Lord Protector of the Vale. In some older episodes I think he was saying that he had notihng that he worked his way up by himself.

@CerseiDM
@CerseiDM 8 лет назад
From AWOIAF: "Just prior to the events of A Game of Thrones, Stannis began to suspect that the children of Queen Cersei Lannister were not actually Robert's. Convinced that Robert would not believe him, he confided his suspicions to Lord Jon Arryn. Together, they investigated the matter, visiting several of Robert's baseborn children in the city, and Arryn had begun to gather several proofs when he suddenly died."

we don't know the detail of how and when he found out, but with all his spies he must have learned that Jaime and Cersei were fucking, and he knew about Robert's dark-haired bastards (some of which were in his brothel), and so he drew the conclusion. He didn't even have to be certain that Jeoffrey really was a bastard, he just needed to sow doubt in Jon Arryn's mind to start chaos.

Great video! My own personal theory about the death of Sir Hugh is actually explained by the scene at the beginning of your video where Cersei wonders if Jon Arryn told someone what he knew. We've seen in this series how often the squire is able to gain all sorts of intimate knowledge of their master's movements: Podrick is often included in Tyrion's confidences, Lancel is a constant presence around King Robert, etc. I think that Cersei had Sir Hugh knighted and arranged his death at the hands of The Mountain because she suspected that he either 1) had been in Jon Arryn's confidence and knew her secret, or 2) he had been present for enough of Jon Arryn's questioning that he would have led Ned Stark in the right direction had Ned begun to ask the same types of questions. I have no doubt of Cersei's guilt in Sir Hugh's death, but I think it had more to do with what he may have known about her than any knowledge he may have had about Jon Arryn's death.

@CerseiDM
@CerseiDM 8 лет назад
Well he's not the sole responsible for the war. He acted like a catalyst, yes, and set the things in motion. But he's not responsible for Cersei having 3 bastard children, nor for the animosity between Stark and Lannister, nor for the Lannisters' attempts at killing Bran (first Jaime then Joffrey tried), nor for everyone's actions that led to the war. But by killing Jon and accusing the Lannisters, he sure sparked what led to the war, yes. It's very possible it would have happened anyway though. If LF had not killed Jon, the Lannisters would have, or Jon would have told Robert about Joffrey being a bastard, and from there a war was also likely to happen (it was at least a possibility).

So funny. Littlefinger left clues for Ned to figure out Arryn was murdered, and blame it on the Lannisters, but Ned was too dumb to figure it out. Littlefinger had to connect the dots and explain it to him step by step. Peter Baelish and Lysa Arryn's role in Jon Arryn's death is the same as in the show, it will be revealed later. Pycelle saw Jon was being poisoned and thought it was Cersei's doing, so he accelerated the process (but it was Lysa doing it)
@liambraithewaite6415
@liambraithewaite6415 5 лет назад
you could have expanded your diagram even further: Lysa sends letter to Cat > Cat suspects Lannisters for Bran's fall/attempted assassination > Cat goes to Kings Landing > Cat intercepted by Littlefinger > Littlefinger becomes Ned's confidant with Cat's blessing > Cat takes Tyrion hostage > War between Starks and Lannisters > Ned finds out truth of incest through Littlefingers manipulation > Ned confronts Cersei > Robert killed by Cersei > Joffrey becomes king > Ned dies > War of the Five Kings. If it hadn't been for Jon's death and the letter, the war of five kings would not have happened. Yes the Starks may have still suspected the Lannisters for Bran but Littlefinger would not have been able to interfere the same and Ned probably would not have found out about the incest. Bran's fall was the downfall for the leaders of House Stark, as that is what prompted Catelyn to go to Kings Landing and enable Littlefinger to manipulate and betray Ned. However, it could be argued that if Ned hadn't been merciful and warned Cersei, Robert would have lived and the Lannisters would have been wiped out.

Are you sure that Sor Hugh was innocent? It seems to me that Lysa asked him to kill Jon, and gave him a knighthood as a reward for doing so.... Also, it doesn't seem to be a coincidence that the Mountain fought against Hugh. Probably Pycelle asked Gregor to kill Hugh (as there would be less proof of the fact that, as the Grand Maester thought, Cersei had killed Jon Arryn), or maybe Littlefinger asked him to do so (to create more suspicion towards the fact that Cersei killed Jon Arryn (as Gregor Clegane was allied to the Lannisters)).
@CerseiDM
@CerseiDM 6 лет назад
I can't be sure Hugh is totally innocent, no. Maybe he was Lysa's accomplice. In the show at least, Lysa says she put the poison in the drink herself. In the books, I don't remember if she says the same or not (it's been years since i've read it~). I think there is no proof anywhere of Hugh's involvement nor of his culpability, so we'll never now! I think it would be wiser for Lysa and LF to have as little people as possible aware of their plans so I lean towards Hugh being unaware and innocent, but I can't be sure.

it's weird, right? lysa did not want to be included in the war but allowed tyrion to be held in the eyrie. I guess the trial by combat could not be helped since tyrion chose that method, but she further put herself in a problematic position of Tyrion were killed. Than again, other than Jaime, it is unclear if retribution would have taken place. It seems like LF kinda lucked out that Tyrion didn't die there especially considering it would be difficult for him to gain much. Lysa seemingly being his trump card.

pretty sure littlefinger sent the assassin to kill Bran when he was paralyzed, purposely giving him the fancy dagger. It looks like they went with this narrative in the show yes. In the books though, the dagger belonged to Robert (who won it from LF), and Joffrey stole it and hired the assassin. LF knew that the dagger belonged to Robert but he accused Tyrion instead and started a war.

Great analysis. But I don't think Littlefinger did it all only to get rich and powerful. Well .. he wants that too of course, coming from almost nothing in comparison with the great houses. But I think he also did it to get hold of Sansa. He made her father hang himself for his righteousness. And then Sansa needed someone to protect her - and there he was. He might even have planned to use Sansa to get close to Catelyn. I don't think he had a hand in the red wedding. Not his style... and he wouldn't want Cat to die before she thanks him for saving Sansa. So now he still has Sansa as a bargaining chip for his own benefits and we have seen hints that he is trying to substitiute his great love Cat with her. I'm sure, his plans for Sansa and Cat where at least part of his plot. But I am unsure whether that is just a piece of the puzzle or if that is/was his true goal. The most interesting thing is where he wil land when all the big players and plot lines converge again and what his endgame is. I'm sure he has all of that figured out already. I highly doubt he wants to end up on the throne though, way too many enemies and too high-profile for his style.

no, it was actually Joffrey who sent the killer after Bran! It's better explained in the books: in his poor twisted mind, he wanted to impress his father (Robert) by ending Bran's suffering in a "merciful" way. He had heard a conversation where a drunk Robert said it would have been better for Bran to die than be crippled. He stole one of his father's knives (Robert had won it from Littlefinger in a bet) and gave it to the killer. He later boasts that he's familiar with Valyrian steel, meaning the knife. And then Littlefinger used what had happened for his own interest, creating chaos. (Note: it's possible that they changed this in the show and made it Littlefinger instead, i don't remember)

Amazing. Goddamn brilliance. He killed a man and hid the body in an arson fire, without the arsonists ever even knowing they were being framed. And here I was, thinking he'd done almost nothing at all... On S6E10 it was shown that Littlefinger wants the iron throne. Well, this might be his tactics as : - For that he had to gain control over all houses and kingdoms. He could gain control over the east . Now east being a powerful territory with a huge army he can very easily use it to conquer others. He does so to defeat Boltons and gained virtual control over the Starks as he has more power. Starks having no temporary choice have to rely on him making the north fall prey to Li'lfinger . And East and the North could be driven under his control to fight the the current holders of the throne. This way he gains more power upon Westeros..... Littlefinger is a greatest threat until now. It is getting interesting. Littlefinger , Starks , Team Dany , Lannisters , and the lost Gendry Baratheon may be more......
