One of the most common areas for error in play - who takes the middle return of serve. Let us know if there are any errors that come up often in your play - we may do a video on it :).
@natehendricksen3338
@natehendricksen3338 2 года назад
One common thing I see is when the person receiving the serve has to backpedal off the court due to a deep serve. They often hit a poor return and are not able to advance very far. Their teammate at the kitchen line often does not recognize how out of position their partner is and do not provide any help when the serving team drops a short 3rd shot in the gap that the person receiving serve has created. Being ready to switch and poach could help the receiving team get into a better set before the 5th shot.

@@natehendricksen3338 great observation. Short returns of serve are deadly in Pickleball. Thanks for the comment.

Respect for the X is part of my game. I'm a lefty so for me it even makes more sense. You keep giving us more tips on WHY and it really helps me convince my partners why it's so important. You talked before about pinning your partner back and opening up the court but today you added "your playing as one", another great tip to help pass along. Thanks, Tony!

I've seen the concept, but I haven't focused on it till I was researching how to have much better partner play. Thanks for presenting this. However, optimally I would like to have see more cases where the ball was landing on the "T" at the baseline and each partner played, respecting the X and not respecting the X. In rec play, I've been crowded by my partner who would stand on the "T" as I served. My thought, that can't be the best place to stand to address the return shot.

I do love this...respect the x. I do have a thought on this. In the example with Scott, he is going wayyyyy over to Stephanie's forehand to hit the ball. I've never had this happen in real game, even when I play with 4.5 and 5. level players. This seems extreme. Scott, IMO, took a ball that clearly wasn't his. Also, if Stephanie serves the ball to Returner's back hand or even fore hand with very little angle, the returner will return with very little angle. It seems that the Serving Team's forehand can take the ball no problem. There's no real 'X" to respect. Thanks for your commitment to helping us all get better and better. :)

Agreed. The two videos didn't really support the instruction that Tony gave. Right handed player on the left can easily cover a foot or so to the right of the middle, and slide back into place without a problem.
@BestPickleballCoach

The exaggerated nature of the third shot was used to more clearly illustrate the openness of the court and the pinning of the player on the left. Several players have commented about this sort of shot being not realistic. This shot was not staged for video. Was tournament play with some of the best players in the game. It happens :). I’ll pull some more “regular” poaching of the third shot and put it up. It’s the same basic problem illustrated in these shots.

@@BestPickleballCoach I know you were doing it for teaching purposes so I understand completely. As one of the viewer's said, LOL, now if I can just get my partners to see this. When I say partners, I don't mean tournament partners, just the recreational ones I play with on a regular basis. It's challenging to teach an old dog new tricks. ;)

5:19 Also this guy is moving forward as the ball is approaching him. If he stayed at the spot where he hit the ball he would've had a way better defense against the hit I agree with the principle, but your example is the most absolute extreme scenario, the ball is going directly to the right corner, it's insane for the left side player to take it
@BestPickleballCoach

Agree that this is extreme. See how often this happens in regular play (not as far over, but same principle).

Another good video Tony. If your backhand is weak and you keep shifting to hit mostly forehand your opponent will see this and exploit that weakness. The fact that you pin your partner out of the court is pretty obvious. Respect the X.

While this makes good strategic sense, it is counter to what I see most pros doing regardless of whether it’s mixed doubles or men’s doubles. Most of the time I see this principal applied is during women’s doubles. I don’t know why, but I watch a lot of PB and in general this is what I see.
@BestPickleballCoach

Agree that pros do not sufficiently understand this concept and it leads to less than optimal play. Even pro players can improve their games. One of the beauties of our sport.

My normal men’s doubles partner is a lefty so we respect the X generally. But if the return is short then we break the X and the servers partner would take that shot. My question is what is the best location to hit that third shot drop in that case?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 2 года назад
In the event of a short return, a drop is often not the best shot. Try to pin the returner (who is moving forward) back.
@pyrador623
@pyrador623 2 года назад
When you say "generally", does that guidance imply both players have comparable mobility and skills (such as a consistent backhand drop)?
@BestPickleballCoach
@BestPickleballCoach 2 года назад
The X can be broken but there should be a reason to do it. Players break the X all the time for no reason and it leads to suboptimal play. In this video, Stephanie is an awesome dinker and can third shot with the best. Plus you want Scott moving up to apply pressure. Hope this helps explain it better.
@pyrador623
@pyrador623 2 года назад
I wonder if they fared better where the return is towards the middle of the server's box and Scott takes the ball with his forehand? The two breakdowns are very different returns. In breakdown #1, the return is very deep to the corner of the server's box. In breakdown #2, the return is more to the middle of the server's box.

The lesson (2nd shot returned down the middle) doesn't match the videos (2nd shot returned INDISPUTABLY to the odd court.) In actual practice, who would take the bizarre action that was demonstrated in the first video?!

I still believe it is much easier to do a forehand 3rd shot drop than a backhand one when return of serve is coming straight down the middle. Your example is extreme, not really down the middle, and of course the player on the right would take it. However, in your example, if I was player on right, I would do a 3rd shot drop with my forehand to the backhand of the opponent directly in front of me. I think the forehand returner can easily place his 3rd shot drop crosscrt to the opponents backhand with balls coming down the middle. You did not explain 'why' we should respect the X. Is it because if we didn't, we would have to now redirect the ball and that is harder to do?

I don’t think the example given with the player on the left coming all the way over to poach his partners return was a good one. She could have made an easy forehand return herself. A better example would be a ball coming down the middle.
