Dear Professor Abramson, for what is worth, I am a little bit skeptical about the etymology of “malsinar”. “Mal” in Portuguese means “bad”. And “sinal” means “signal”. There are other words in Portuguese with “mal” as a prefix, such as “malandro” (bad man). Thank you very much for one more great video! Best wishes, Leonidas

@@HenryAbramsonPhD It's a popular dish in Spain and Portugal, very touristy, made in huge pans, the main constituents being rice and seafood, but also chicken or chorizo sausage, peppers, saffron, etc. They would have cooked it back then too. All ingredients, even rice, were well known and available-rice, imported from Egypt, was known since antiquity.

Portugal and the Douro Valley are synonymous with Port, a fortified wine that Brits of a certain age and social class are known to imbibe in moderation (really?) I have a morning snifter of Cockburn's Port in hand for medicinal purposes only, you understand. Just about all of the great Port producers married into the English merchant classes (perhaps vice-versa) with the result that Port is more English than Portuguese. Cheers! L'Chaim!

Have Jewish communities ever been inclusive and accepted outsiders who did not also convert to the Jewish religion?
@HenryAbramsonPhD
@HenryAbramsonPhD 5 месяцев назад
Of course
@JB-du3qv
@JB-du3qv 5 месяцев назад
@@HenryAbramsonPhD that's not true. Even Jews who do not conform to the religion, such as Spinoza for example, did not find tolerance in their community. The Orthodox will ostracize those who deviate from the religion. This is not the exception, it's the rule. And just as much if not more so, Jews are neither inclusive nor tolerant to outsiders living within their community. There is no historical or contemporary example of it. They advocate for outsiders to show tolerance to them, merely out of self interest, not as a moral principal that they reciprocate.
