Who Were The Original Christians? - The Naked Archaeologist 218 -What Happened to the JC Bunch?

Featuring amateur archaeologist, enthusiast and multi-award winning investigative filmmaker, Simcha Jacobovici, The Naked Archaeologist is an irreverent, entertaining and eye-opening journey into the fascinating archaeology of the ancient world. Along the way, new discoveries are made, lost treasures revealed, and ancient mysteries uncovered.
The earliest Christians were in fact Jews - essentially, a Jewish sect of Jesus followers. They followed Jesus and respected his teachings as if he were much like a modern-day rabbi. And they adhered to the laws of Moses - which means they circumcised, ate Kosher, and respected Saturday as the Sabbath. So why is there such a separation between Judaism and Christianity today?

All of Eastern Orthodoxy shares many commonalities with Traditional Judaism, but Ethiopian Orthodox have the added traditions of circumcision and not eating unclean foods. The word "Kosher" would not be appropriate here. "Kosher" is something found in the Talmud which involves greater requirements of acceptability than what is found in the written Torah and Ethiopian Christians do not follow those oral traditions of the Rabbi's, only the written scripture.

Our story begins in the middle decades of the fifth century BC, when an eminent Israelite scholar called Ezra, of the priestly house of Aaron, gathered the sundry scriptures and traditions of his people and redacted them into a formal canon. Ezra, at the time lived among the Israelite exiles in Babylonia. Later, when the Archemenid rulers of Persia permitted the return of the Israelites to their native land of Judah, he led a group of them to Jerusalem, possibly but not necessarily to settle. For the sake of the argument, let us grant that the place in question was not the Jerusalem of Palestine, but the one of Arabia: Uri Shalim, which is probably the present village of Al Sharim, in the Asir highlands, as I have suggested in an earlier work on the subject ( see 'The Bible Came from Arabia). Israelites and other followers of the monotheism of Moses who accepted the authority of Ezra-- in Babylonia and Arabia as in Palestine and elsewhere--came to be known as Jews. Some decades later, in about 400 BC ,a man called Issa began to preach a more liberal interpretation of the monotheism of Moses among the Israelites of the same Arabian Jerusalem. His mother Mary, regarded in her time as a holy woman of the temple., allegedly belonged to the priestly house of Aaron-- the same Aaron from whom Ezra claimed descent. The somewhat innovative preaching of Issa was apparently opposed and rejected by the people of his home region, many of whom were already Jews. It was accepted, however in another part of Arabia--apparently the Hijaz--where the followers of Issa came to be known as Nazarenes ( In the Koran ,the Nasara). This was perhaps because the first success of the man's preaching was among the inhabitants of the tribal territory of the Nasirah, the Arabian Nazareth. These Nazarenes had a special Gospel written in Aramaic whose existence in the seventh centuryAD--the period of the rise of Islam--is attested by authoritative Islamic traditions. These traditions further indicate that the same Gospel, in Aramaic or in translation, was known at the time in Ethiopia. Since then this Nazarene Gospel has been lost.,and its actual text remains unknown. However, what it originally said concerning the historical person and mission of Issa may be inferred from the Koran. More than four centuries later, in about AD30, a man called Jeshu of Nazareth ,son of Joseph the carpenter, left the region of Wadi Jalil in the Hijaz (the Arabian Galilee) and arrived in another region by the same name in Palestine (the Palestinian Galilee). To this day, the tribal inhabitants of his native Arabian Galilee continue to be known as the 'Nazareth' folk (in Arabic, the Nasirah). This Jeshu was recognized by his Israelite contemporaries as a descendant of David, with a legitimate claim to the historical throne of the Biblical kingdom of Judah, which had ceased to exist in Arabia since the sixth century BC. He was apparently a Nazarene, not a Jew: his early followers were certainly called Nazarenes In Palestine ,the man's political pretensions and special religious views got him into serious trouble with a large party of the local Jews, who felt threatened enough by him to demand his execution. Consequently he was put to death on the cross shortly after he arrived with his partisans in Jerusalem.

The first Jewish Christians followed the Jewish law. They would also meet up on Sundays, the Lord's day (Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday) to share in the Eucharist. Gradually they stopped going to the synagogue where they were not welcome. Gentile Christians were uncircumcised and followed none of the Jewish dietary laws. They only kept the Lord's day. That's basically why Sunday.

@@user-pp5ri9dq4y I was just explaining to Beth Bartlett why historically the Church worships on Sunday rather than Saturday. But if you really want to know how I personally know that Jesus rose on a Sunday, well, as I wasn't there, I rely on those who were and their disciples. The Scriptures tell us that the women first discovered the empty tomb on early on the first day of the week (Matthew 28:1) So Sunday. The first Christians celebrated the Lord's day on the first day of the week, as we see in Acts 20:7. Post-apostolic writers confirm this. “But every Lord’s day . . . gather yourselves together and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned” (Didache 14 [A.D. 70]). "We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead” (Letter of Barnabas 15:6-8 [A.D. 74]) God bless and keep you safe.

The Jewish followers of Jesus survived as a sizable group during the period 132-136 until the extermination of both the followers of Bar Kochba and the followers of Jesus as described in Dio Cassius history Books 61-76 (A.D. 54-211). The existence of the Jewish followers of Jesus is mentioned in a book by Paulus Orosius 'Seven Books of History Against the Pagans' in the chapter about the Emperor Hadrian. I am surprised that when you spoke about the Messiah you only mentioned ONE Messiah and not two Messiahs; the Davidic and the Priestly Messiah. Why do you think that the Gospels have a Infancy Narrative for both Jesus and for John the Baptist?

First problem, he goes to a princeton grad with a bible history question. In 70 AD Rome shows up, The followers of the way of the Nazarene remember what he said, and head for the hills. The Jews, once the massacre is over, resent the fact that the Christians didn't stay and help them. The schism continued to grow from there. within a hundred years there were very few Messianic Jews, and unfortunately many of the church fathers in that time were rabidly anti-Semitic.

11:42 gave me goosebumps. Imagine, James, the brother of Jesus, working hard, Mary Magdalene, still with her purity, coming and helping out. Poeple eating food, talking about Jesus and their movement. Oh what a wonderful sight! i wish i could witness James, Mary, Thomas and the Ebionites. Nag Hamadi scrolls are just as important. Alas, history only remembers the winners... James and Peter had a fallout and Peter, to establish his authority gave Jesus the status of Divinity. 1033AD to be exact. Also, wasn't St. Peter was given the leadership after Jesus' death? That coincided with Mary Magdalene's character slandering. That's what History tells us now...

Most of the NT is written by jews, and pagan is a word Christians designed to label non Christians. Makes no sense to accuse Christians of being pagan. The Truth is in the plain text. james did not take leadership in the church nor particularly believe in Jesus as Messiah until after he met him alive three days after he had watched him die. that is very different from the narrative you give. neither james nor any disciple had any expectation of a resurrection and were sad to think they were wrong about Jesus and that only changed because of the resurrection. something rebbi schneerson has not done nor has anyone else. God justified Jesus' claims by raising him from the dead. if you could stop thinking of messiah in strictly carnal terms and of Christianity through the lens of Catholicism for a moment, you just might find your Messiah as so many of us have. why would james promote doctrines among the essenes totally contrary to those promoted among the disciples? by the way, james was put to death for his belief that Jesus rose from the dead. he died for his faith when all he had to do to live was renounce it.

For example: Isaiah 53:3 says "he was despised and rejected by men". Israel is despised and rejected by men in Isaiah 60:15, and Psalms 44:13-14. The Greek books say that Jesus was followed everywhere by large crowds (by the way since when does Gd speak to Idol worshipping Greeks?). In Luke 4:14-15 Jenus is "praised by all". Matthew 4:25 he is "followed by multitudes". Entry into Jerusalem? The city comes out and welcomes him. On his way to die? Luke 23:27 "a multitude" weeps for him. In Mark 14:1-2 there was "fear that the people would riot" if he was arrested. He was a very popular guy, not despised and rejected by men as the verse says. I'm going to skip a few verses so that the message isn't too long. Isaiah 53:5 says "he was bruised ... Crushed by (not for as popularly mistranslated) our iniquities". Isaiah 42:4 says that the messiah will not fail nor be crushed till he has "set right in the earth". Look around you. This is how Jenus set right in the earth? Jeremiah 50:7, and 10:25 talk about how Israel will be crushed by the evil of other (crushed by the evil of the nations who think they are doing good). Isaiah 53:8 - "from dominion and judgment he was taken away". Jenus never had a dominion nor did he have judgment while he was alive. He was not a political leader so he did not have that sort of power. Israel did have dominion, and judgment over the land till the Romans began the fourth exile. Isaiah 53:9 - "and with the rich in his deaths (plural)". Why do translators turn into the singular? Isaiah 53:10 - "he will see his seed, he will prolong his days". Did Jenus have seed (physical children) that he saw? Did he prolong his days? Also, if he's "god" how does he prolong his days isn't he eternal already? This verse can only apply to a mortal whose life is extended. Isaiah 53:11 - "with his knowledge the righteous one, my servant, will cause many to be just". His knowledge will cause others to be righteous. Yet, if you go into any church, the preacher/teacher will tell you that you must accept the blood of Jenus. Do they ever say accept the knowledge? It's totally against what the verse foretells. There are many, many more problems - like I said I'm only highlighting a few issues with the way X-ians interpret the passage.

I will say this and leave it at that. The disciples of Jesus and the first Christians believed only in one God, just as the Jews. They believed that Jesus was the messiah God come in flesh. They did not believe in the false Trinity doctrine that came much later!!!

Yes many did, Jesus was on Earth for like 2 months or so before he assessed for good. So he walked and he ate and he sat with his disciples. It wasn't just his fri3nds and family that saw him , high level Roman General also saw him and spoke with him. Also that goes for visions today, many have had visions and been taken in out of body experiences not dreams , with Jesus and every single person that describes there interaction are very simular in many ways. No talking , it's communication by telepathy. He always seems to be in a white robe , the point is Jesus is what he claimed to be, his promises always true. He is the Messiah and was long foreseen in the old Testiment, he is the word and was with God in the beginning before creation . The father , the son , the holy spirit make up God . They are one.

It is a false conclusion to say that the Ebionites were the followers of James. First of all, they rejected James' ruling that the Gentiles did NOT NEED to be circumcised and convert to Judaism. Secondly, largely because of this conflict, they hated Paul who was James' appointed "apostle to the Gentiles." Also, they were extreme vegetarians, rejecting even the Torah's law to eat a lamb or goat at the Passover meal. They even have a bizarre gospel which portrays Jesus as saying he came to abolish the animal sacrifices! They are not the followers of Jesus or James; they are the first break-away heretical sect of Christianity.

Paul tells us what happened, Jews rejected the truth of Jesus so the gentiles were given the task to spread the news of salvation. You think Jews would understand now because their has been no profit or holy man for 2000 years. If Jews adapted Jesus as messiah they would be blessed again.

Paul was known for twisting scripture and going as far as to make up scripture. If Jesus were the son of God then he can't possibly be the son of Joseph which is said to be a descendant of King David. If one compares the Jewish writings of the old testament Jesus does not qualify as Messiah, also the texts christians use to try to prove Jesus as Messiah or son of God are always taken out of context. The trinity is not mentioned at all which is pure idolatry along with the idea that God has a son, and what purpose does it serve. It's funny how John the baptizer would believe in washing away sin, Jesus would say "your sins are forgiven you" before he was even crucified, and who needs shedding of blood if a fist full of flour would suffice. Even the idea of a person used as a sacrifice for sin is an abomination let alone drink his blood and eat his flesh.

13 of the 27 books in the new testament are attributed to Paul - A MAN WHO WAS NOT A FOLLOWER OF JESUS AND NEVER KNEW HIM. Your religion is not of Jesus, it is the religion of Paul. Jesus was a Jew, get that through your thick skull, he was circumsized, he observed the sabbath, he didn't eat pork - do you follow Jesus? I dont think so, you follow Paul

Jews: There is a Messiah in every generation, but it won't be revealed until the right time. The messianic spirit was Enoch, Joseph, David, Elijah... [Reincarnation is fundamental to Judaism] Christians: Jesus is the only Messiah and his spirit still lives. [Reject idea of reincarnation but expect Jesus in some non human form in the future]
