FYI, they got rusty because you dried them with the paint stripper gun. Heat really REALLY accelerates rusting. Look at cars with STAINLESS steel exhausts that have rust on them close to the engine, just because of the heat. If you'd have dried them with a towel it would have been fine.

When creating a masterpiece, being hypercritical is the artist speaking, not the engineer. The engineer would take a good hard look again at where your started, the original marble machine and say, 'Hey this MMX is WAAAY better'. While on stage yes, the artist should hold sway - but at the CAD station or your work tables, the engineer's voice should prevail. You are too hard on yourself Martin. It is AMAZING what you have achieved with the MMX and how much you have learned.

The over rotation inside pipes (also wooden ones) increases exponentially friction from one marble to another
@LuisGustavoCoelho
@LuisGustavoCoelho 3 года назад
And that friction is worse if the marbles have rust or feel "gluey"
@PikkaBird
@PikkaBird 3 года назад
Absolutely. The overrotation lanes work if the marbles aren't mashed into them and can roll under their own gravity. But with pressure introduced the marbles will get pressed into the lane and become wedged.

Grease on marbles is pretty good, it's what we do on Petanque balls to avoid rust, you should try to keep it that way, use acid solutions to recover from the rust, (like white vinegar or stuff for a couple hours) however you should know that from now on the size of your marbles won't be accurate because of the rust so you should consider replenishing your stocks, refrain from using rusty marbles if you want to keep your MMX not orange

@follisnow4051

@@iAmTheSquidThing I dont think electroplating is a valid option as you need to cover your marble one at a time thus the process would be extremely long and the surface of your marble still wont be smooth (you need an electrical contact to your marble do this and contact points wont be covered), same smoothness issue with lacquer. I think the first film on the marbles is due to graphite powder and though it causes some issue with marbles sticking one another you should think about it as the casual state for your marbles, this film will get back on your marbles over time no matter what you do (unless you delete the parts involved)

Vinegar actually causes rust to form faster, so it's not ideal to use it for rust removal on a bunch of tiny things all at once (no idea on other acids, but I can speak from experience about vinegar since I use it to descale stuff I smith). At this point, formulated rust remover/converter is probably the best course of action, and/or maybe a fine medium in a tumbler.

Once you have a contract (the interface between your modules) then you are free to play around with the implementation as much as you want, as long as it meets the contract. This video was a perfect example -- you have an input and an output, the module needs to deliver the marble across it, but you are free to experiment with different designs to see how well they meet the goal. Remember this is a one of a kind, never before attempted machine. You are having to deal with issues no one even thought about before. And you are doing it in a way that can be repeated for multiple machines. If you have to fix an issue and you didn’t learn anything then you truly have a problem. Every fix is new knowledge that will make it so much easier for the next machine, for the next problem. Keep at it.

Lessons were learned of this first attempt that succeeded, here Martin seems to intend to plan to build a final functional design, which is great, buuut he is still learning what does and does not work, building new components as he goes and literally developing new proofs of concept. The prototype that follows the initial prototype looks far more like the finished design, but rarely includes everything the final requires. For instance the nonsense of the too narrow lanes on the marble divider, which in turn made the size of the note management linkages, the pipes are 10 mm and the holes 8. He didn't know what pipe he would end up finding that worked, how could he understand he was making a poor choice that would haunt him for the rest of his creation? He built his Grosstraktor. Now he is developing the panzer 1. Next time we will have a more refined Panzer 2. I'm terrified how impressive his Panzer 3 and 4 designs will turn out, with as much refinement he is stitching in so far, will they be self propelled, marble machines of musical excess? Possibly with speakers activated or articulated by marbles themselves?

@@waynec369 It's not pedantic to point out that bearings and balls are two entirely different things. Also, it's perfectly fine to call these steel balls "marbles". Look up the definition if you don't believe it. "A marble is a small spherical object often made from glass, clay, steel, plastic, or agate."

When you wash steel, afterward immediately wash it with Isopropyl Alcohol (medical alcohol) you can find it in most pharmacies and in the paint department of a hardware store. The alcohol displaces the water and evaporates.

Use isopropyl alcohol, acetone or metholated spirits to clean the marbles. This should not rust the marbles and also act as a solvent to dissolve any residue left on the marbles. It also dries quickly and as another commenter said, it also acts as a degreaser.
