I had two women who raised me. My grandmother and my mother. My grandmother had a very bad case of a severely disfiguring genetic illness. She was withdrawn, of course, but also very kind, patient, loving, supportive. My mother was an extremely attractive woman with a vicious temper. When she started a verbal assault you were afraid it was going to get to the point where you would be killed but by the time she finished you were hoping you could die. She was smart and very savvy because she knew how to put on a good front when she needed to. She was a master manipulator. Just because someone is intelligent and/or good-looking it absolutely is no indicator of whether they are a nice person.

Late bloomers often spend time reading, or cultivating intelligence through hobbies. When they “bloom” as adults they are surprised to be considered attractive. I think that’s why many attractive people are intelligent and seek out like minded mates.

Physical fitness is associated with attractiveness. Physical fitness also improves a persons mental state. Achieving physical fitness (if you arent naturally fit) also requires intelligence, conscientiousness, persistence and willpower...

There are millions of intelligent people in the world who aren't physically fit. Having willpower, persistence and motivation are attributes of a healthy mental state, which is not correlated with intelligence.

@IsomerSoma
@IsomerSoma 3 года назад
Intelligent people may be consciousness (and trust me many also aren't), but they will more often than others put their focus into activities/ occupations, which challenge them cognitively rather than physically. In my experience people with high intelligence are considerably less interested in physical fitness and activities than others. You won't meet the most intelligent people in a fitness studio but rather in a science or mathematics course at an university. Students especially in some of the most cognitively challenging courses aren't most of the time physical fit. Probably even below average. Is such behavior sensible? No, but being intelligent doesn't make one act reasonable and sensible automatically. High intelligence isn't required to live a good and healthy life. It even might be an obstacle to do so as high intelligence correlates with mental illness.
@pyalot
@pyalot 3 года назад
@@IsomerSoma You are talking about a societal stereotype which has no scientific basis. We know with plenty of evidence that keeping physically active, fit and in shape is a tremendous contributor to physical AND mental health, wellbeing and cognitive performance (including intelligence). Neglecting your body to focus on tasks of cognition simply is not intelligent, it is in fact dumb. Because we know without any shred of doubt that cognition is substantially impaired by a body in bad shape.

I think another reason this theory might tend to be predictive is that attractive people are more likely to have opportunities; especially in the job market (this is provable), and also in school. If an attractive kid gets more and better attention from his teachers and later has more favorable job opportunities, might that lead to higher IQ scores?

My high school psychologist told me that I scored 154 on the I.Q. test that he administered, but no one has ever accused me of being good looking. Even the women I've dated haven't tried to tell me that I'm good looking; they've said things like, "Looks aren't important to me." I certainly couldn't be described as "high status," either. (I abandoned a career in mechanical engineering in order to teach; I now work as a substitute teacher, which is about as low status as a person can get.) I suspect that the correlation between a woman's attractiveness and the status of her husband is much stronger than the correlation between a woman's attractiveness and the intelligence of her husband. I suspect that the correlation between a woman's attractiveness and her husband's attractiveness is stronger, too. I don't think that homely, intelligent men who fail to achieve high status have much luck finding attractive wives.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding here. Not every person that is intelligent (there are different types of intelligence) need be succesful, but generally in order to become succesful you need to be intelligent enough. There are other factors, of course. Yes, you are a teacher, which is only middle class, but that is by choice. You could have done much more with your life (you gave up an engineering career) if you had chosen this.

Men who are teachers aren’t really seen as high value by the general female population. It is just natural for high status people to search for high status partners. I’ve rarely seen a male teacher with a model-like GF or wife. The pairs I’ve seen are mostly homely; their spouses look like the girl-next-door type.

Just brainstorming here, but I think it's easier to be in the beautiful/intelligent range of this study than most are assuming. :) If I heard the video correctly, the study considered people to be beautiful or intelligent if they were in the top 50% of society. If you've been to Walmart lately, think about how many people are in there. It's pretty easy to be in the top 50% in there. LOL People considered 'intelligent' are likely constantly working out their brain and making it work better. They are more likely to make themselves look neat and put-together on the outside and make some decent choices as far as eating and general health. They'd be more likely to fix their hair, wear clean clothes, and have good posture and some confidence. Those things alone make a person more attractive than the other half of the population who gave up on themselves a long time ago. People who gave up on their outward appearance likely have very low self-esteem and as a result, don't believe in themselves enough to work towards intelligence. I also want to point out that people in the 'beautiful' range are still not likely 'beautiful' at all hours of the day or 100% of their lives. They were just the ones who were able to make themselves look beautiful long enough to be considered that for the study. So I guess what all my rambling concludes is that 'beauty' for this study was people who look neat, clean, and healthy. People who were 'intelligent' in this study just had to have more sense than 50% of the population. That's not so hard to do these days. HAHA *I'm mostly joking around. :)

Even if you dress better than 80% of people, your physical attractiveness will still be limited by your facial and body structure. There’s only so much you can do. Still, I agree it’s worth doing whatever you can. I am physically (facially) attractive yet treat my body like shit. If a guy with a 5 face and a six-pack competes with me, some people might favor him.
@voluspa4263
@voluspa4263 4 года назад
@@chaostheory16 Well developed social skills might make up for being overweight, but as for pure looks (tinder is a great example of this in action) you won't even be considered. Being fit will make you more attractive, no matter your natural looks. Though your chance(starting point) is relative according to your natural looks(bone structure, etc...) Look at Chris Pratt - he wasn't considered especially attractive before he became fit. The inverse is also true. Christian Bale in american hustle put on a lot of pounds for the screen and though his good looks saved him from 'ugliness', few would deem him attractive. You'd have to be in denial to reject the correlation.

There's a fine line between genius and lunacy. Go back a few decades (before universities were as profit-driven as they are these days) and think of the "mad professor" trope. I have found, in my limited experience, that the most attractive thing about a man beyond the way he looks, and even his intelligence/wisdom; is knowing who he is. And attributes like love, leadership, and kindness. I think those things are the most beautiful. Unfortunately, everyone seems so damaged now a days and extremely insecure! Maybe someone observed some things that made them wonder...or is questioning their own narratives and want Dr Grandes opinion. Your assumption means that you’ve established beliefs about the questioner without having that info. Meaning you applied meaning or a story to the question... most humans do this. It’s good to recognize, be introspective and wonder at our biases, false narratives that may warp our lenses...creating such assumptions. A person who is victim to a narcissist who claims that “beautiful people are more intelligent” could have asked this too... We humans take a small bit of info and create the whole pic around it & it’s rarely correct. The more info, the more questions we ask, the less judgment we apply...more chance our assessment is closer to accurate. Just consider, not all is as we believe... most of the time 😊

At 9:25, Dr. Grande, using a stereotype and laughing at it gracefully. :) People need to define what is "being" intelligent, in contrast with "appearing" intelligent. What it comes down to is what happens when you meet someone who delves into the subject that you "appear" to be intelligent about on a much deeper level than needed. A number of people would view someone too knowledgable on a subject that they themselves don't know much about as arrogant, but that is a projection of their own feeling of insecurity on a particular subject. I find that you get more out of being genuinely invested in what the person is telling you, asking questions, or being lighthearted, and that it makes the encounter relatively agreeable for both parties involved, as well as memorable positively for both people.

There may be a part of intelligence which is genetic and cross selected, but attractiveness may also affect intelligence devellopement. Attractive people may have less challenges in life and may not devellop their intellect as much, but we could also think they may have more opportunities to experiment than unnatractive people. As always, thought provoking, Dr. Grande. Apparently whether mate selection is female driven or male driven is a variable of the evolution of beauty in the animal kingdom. For instance, many male birds have evolved a flashy appearance radically different from that of the female. But in other animal species, where the strong male tends to have a harem, herd, pack, etc. this hasn't occurred...........

I’d be interested to know how attractiveness was measured here. I think intelligence does to some extent shine through as a gleam in the eye or an expression on the face, to some extent at least, making more intelligent people seem a bit more attractive than less intelligent people with the same features. (Hairstyle and clothes could also be a factor.) It also depends what they mean by successful people improving their attractiveness. You suggested that this was by plastic surgery (I can’t remember whether explicitly or implicitly), but there are far more ways. People who are more intelligent and/or more successful are more likely to eat more healthily - Richmond upon Thames is the least overweight constituency in the U.K., I believe. Rich people are more likely to use good hair and skin products. Successful people are more likely to be competitive and thus more likely to exercise. Conversely, attractive people are treated better, so they are more likely to flourish in school and maximize their intelligence. So even if there *is* a correlation, there are lots of factors as to why.
@user-nv8iw1nb3s
@user-nv8iw1nb3s 4 года назад
I believe the more important and clearest correlation here is the one between confidence (a factor demonstrably more common in attractive people) and test performance (which is about as related to the raw intelligence that could be described as hereditary as it is to an aggregate of factors that includes things such as focus and confidence). For one reason or another, it has been demonstrated that a person is usually comparably intelligent to one's parents. It's not always clear whether this is nature or nurture, and there are also outliers in either direction. If you add to everything else the possibility of a difference in educational quality (i.e., access to prestigious schools among people of "higher status," to which we might assume a higher proportion of attractive people belong, and preferential treatment toward more attractive students), and it becomes difficult to isolate the factors well enough to have an accurate study on the correlation between raw intelligence and attractiveness.

I see where you are coming from because I was/am one of the few people who could do beauty type work despite having uni degrees etc. It used to annoy me to be seen as just a creature of beauty but basically dumb, because I happened to to bits of modelling and creative activities and like "beautiful anything". And, to cap it all off, I am blonde and female, too. The classic " dumb blonde" package. But I eventually concluded that whatever most people think is irrelevant to me. All that matters is what I and people I like and respect think and feel. Intelligence takes many forms and can be defined and seen in many forms. Like the way a person lives their own life, copes with problems etc. You definitely do not nerd university degrees to prove you ate an intelligent human being. Nor do you need to be rich and successful in the conventional way. You can be poor and still very intelligent, successful, too. For instance if you are living the sort of life you truly love. For artistic, spiritual type people, that is often a life where the pursuit of truth or beauty in its many forms eg art, nature, ingenuity etc is all that matters. And they are happiest doing that. Whatever the rest of society values is unimportant to them. They are freed from the shackles of sheep like conformism to certain irrelevant, unimportant ideas, values etc the rest blindly adhere to (and are often enslaved by eg quest for materialistic wealth). Do, who is the most successful in reality? The contented creative beauty lover with little or the miserable rich materialistic type with everything? It's all relative. You to not have to live up to anybody else's expectations or yardstick of success. Only your own and that of people who mean something to you.

"Becoming more physically attractive is far more difficult" Becoming more physically attractive is actually pretty damn simple compared to cutting time off how fast you can run a mile.. You can increase one's physical attractiveness by a standard deviation in one day, by simply giving them a hair cut and changing their cloths. Try improving your time running that mile by a standard deviation in the same time. Physical attraction is not some magical concept... Are some people naturally more attractive than others? Of course. But that tends to boil down to facial symmetry & appropriately masculine/feminine features (which are indicators of high fertility in both genders) Yes.. physical attractiveness is really that simple.. yes humans are THAT basic.. get over it.. So you want to be more my physically attractive? Hit the gym and do the above. Incidentally, while a new hair cut may not make you more intelligent, hitting the gym can have profound benefits upon cognitive performance. This is because the increased blood flow to the brain from exercising helps promote healthy neural growth/development. Incidentally, the above is likely the actual connection between being 'beautiful' and intelligent. Some people just have lovely faces, which again comes down to facial symmetry. Which indicates the individual had a healthy prenatal development. Which correlates to healthy early brain development, which would indicate the individual to be of at least average intelligence. I don't know why people pretend things are so much more complicated than this. Are there outliers? Of course. But there are outliers in all fields of study. This is why outliers are typically excluded and studies focus upon the average/mean results.

Interesting because I've always associated physically attractive people with less intelligence and that seems to have been the general narrative among people in my area. Which is often reinforced when I witness it first hand while dating. In my experience, the prettier the woman is, the less she has to rely on anything of value because her beauty opens up opportunities she would never have if she was 'ugly' or less attractive. Intelligence can lead to over thinking and procrastination which can lead to fear of taking action, which results in many missed opportunities. I have two extremely intelligence friends who are both 350 or more pounds of fat and both of them are college graduates. Both of them are also jobless and poor. Intelligence isn't measured by confidence but confidence leads to opportunities in dating and life. A confident person will get a promotion simply because they made an effort. Even though that person likely isn't the most qualified for the position. 90 percent of people who quit their jobs do it because of incompetent and unqualified toxic managers. While at the same time, those people are more likely to be successful with dating and general income just because they made the effort. Confidence is attractive, success is typically a result of being confident and confidence will attract good looking partners, even if one of them is mediocre in the looks department. If being attractive is associated with intelligence and success, it's likely because it's more common for these people to have confidence based on their looks. However, it's still a far shot from being able to say that good looking people are intelligent. How often do we meet a sexy scientist or doctor? Ironically enough, studies have shown that good looking people in those professions are often perceived as less intelligent based on how good looking they happen to be, even if it's not the case.

If there is one component of a person that stands out, shouts to everyone, smart or not, it is beauty. If you deny that then you aren't too smart. Objectivity about anything to do with human beauty is elusive. A beautiful person will be perceived as being smart unless they are actively disproving this. The general perception has always been that more beautiful you are, the less intelligent people assume you are. Nobody looks at the supermodels on the runway and think they have an IQ in triple digits. The same way if you mention a person who has an IQ over 170, people don’t imagine them having a face like Brad Pitt’s. Usually it’s a very very rare thing to find a person who happens to be very intelligent and also very (objectively) beautiful. That is why the stereotypical terms coined by many societies are along the lines of “stupid bimbo” or “that unattractive nerd who gets A’s in all the classes”. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any intelligent person who also happens to have a gorgeous face but like I said it is very RARE to find someone truly physically objectively gorgeous and who is extremely intelligent. Therefore I disagree with suggestion that beauty and intelligent correlates. Beautiful people do get more opportunities though , and a well-proportioned, pleasant looking face gives off a better first impression and warms up peoples initial views of you and disarms people , so beauty definitely helps open a lot of doors in people’s careers. But still despite this subconscious pull/draw of the beauty where the beautiful people already have an advantage over ugly people, we humans still come to equate intelligence with either average or below average attractiveness. For example, when somebody mentions the word “genius”, Einstein comes to most people’s minds and he was objectively speaking far from a good looking dude. I think in the high intelligence percentage group, we are likely to find mostly average looking people, and then some unattractive people, and only very very few gorgeous people.

What does make a person beautiful? A lot of it has to do with inherited features, but I think people tend to underestimate how much influence you have on your attractiveness. Things such as body fat percentage, muscle percentage, hair, skin and teeth condition, hairstyle, facial hairstyle, make up, clothes or even the way we talk, behave, use body language and facial expression. All these things have a huge impact on our attractiveness level and all usually are in our control. So my hypothesis is that intelligent people can seem more beautiful also because they are often more aware of their image, of how other people perceive them and they are more successful in shaping their image in such way that they are perceived as more attractive.

Alternative hypothesis: intelligence allows one to hone one's appearance. Beauty is not simply genetic inheritance, it is the style and grooming that one applies. Clothes, hairstyle, polished manners. Beauty is in fact modifiable. Intelligent people can look better. Less intelligent people may struggle to combine the tricks effectively. This means that beauty is not a dependent variable, it is an independent variable. It is output, not input. Obviously there are limits to this, but Dr Grande is indeed talking about modest moves within the demographic distribution.

Another factor to consider is, good health correlates with attractiveness and people who are healthier physically tend to be mentally healthy as well.

some of the correlation between iq and attractiveness might be explained by the fact that some illnesses cause cognitive aswell as aesthetic problems. for example down syndrom. so maybe unintelligent people are likely to have a reason for their lack, that can also cause a lack of beauty.

On a question why would you like to be looking more intelligent there is important thing that you've missed Dr. Grande. HR's are often looking for this and that may help you getting a nice job. Especially if you just graduated or have less experience. In previous videos of yours, you tell that there is scientific evidence that elder women tend to recognize the intelligence of a male by just looking into a picture. And this is not a joke- I'm mainly contacted from recruiter women in their mid 40's :D Please take this as a positive criticism as I find you the best mentor for me. This is my first comment so everything else was well accepted.

It may be true that beautiful people have the capability to be more intelligent if they worked at it, developed it, and applied it productively (studying, reading, writing, researching, debating, inventing innovative new theories, solving complex problems), but I've found that beautiful people tend to rely on their looks to get by - they get plenty of attention and status for their looks, so they don't bother with cultivating their intelligence by studying, reading, writing, researching, debating, inventing innovative new theories, and solving complex problems. So the potential may be there in beautiful people, but if they have no motivation to develop it, then what good is it if it's not actually applied to being productive in the real world? I find that less attractive people are motivated to study hard, read a lot, and build their intellectual skills to get ahead because they can't just sit back and rely on their looks to get ahead socially. From my personal experience, I find beautiful people to be the least intellectual because they don't bother to work hard to develop it - because they don't feel like they need to in order to get everything they want.

Interesting, Thank you Dr. Grande. Do you find that the reverse bias is also true, especially in academia?

Also prevalent in some natural, more hip communities (not sure how else to briefly describe what's meant by that). Places where the rule of conformity is to wear zero makeup. Non-conformists are seen as less evolved.

Before I watched the video, my layman's theory is that smart men had high status, tended to have better incomes, more successful, and therefore were able to attract a trophy wife who is mostly hot, but possibly somewhat intelligent as well. That continues to passes on through the generation. Their offspring is smarter and more attractive, and then they seek mates who are also smart and/or attractive.

Raw intelligence is almost genitic or physiological I think. Some people are essentially wired different. We all have the capacity to learn and expand our understanding of things though. I also think being attractive affords many opportunities to an individual.

Understanding this phenomenon, if it is real, is going to be very difficult. Human beings are complicated, and so are the variables that affect there biology and psychology. Thanks for the video Dr.Grande.

It’s because intelligent people tend to lean towards self improvement , physically, emotionally, mentally and financially, rather than self distraction, things like drugs alcoholism and other unhealthy lifestyles, We all know someone who used to be the most popular or desirable person back in school , but when you see them now they are not as popular and good looking as they use to be . I think a genuine good character can make someone more beautiful and successful. In a long term
