Why is it that a simple reach out of your hand is enough to tame the wild, massive, and dangerous dragons in the world of How To Train Your Dragon? You’d think it might be more difficult? Today I am going to break down everything we know about the bonding of humans with these gentle giants.

After calming a dragon, becoming vulnerable, and reaching out to connect, giving the dragon’s the opportunity to choose whether or not to befriend that person, I think a dragon rider must have their soul examined. I think only after seeing who that person truly is and knowing that person is like them or deserves their alliance, will the dragon make their choice to create a lifelong friendship.

Seeing as Toothless’ behaviour was based on a cat, I think it’s more likely the hand thing is a sign of trust. When you hold your hand up to a cat and the cat trusts you, the cat will head butt you. Also, cats head butt things to get their own scent on them. This is theirs. This is safe. Could be the same with dragons. You don’t leave your head vulnerable to get hurt. If a cat, or dragon, feels ok to let you pet their head it means that they feel safe with you. I don’t know about the looking into the soul thing. Maybe if the dragon and human have known each other a long time. But initially I think it’s more of a sign of trust that the human won’t hurt you

so dragons are like bears and dogs combined into one animal. dogs can sense fear and emotion and can be empathetic, and bears can also sense fear, which is why you curl up in a ball, and put your hands over your head when you encounter a bear, so the bear knows you're afraid of it, and you're defenseless and weak, so it will leave you be. And I assume it's also why so many Russian people play with bears. and dogs, like many pets, are influenced by the good people in control of them, bad people influence them to do bad things.

Yeah there really isn’t any magical soul thing to it. It’s just animal behaviour. Make yourself look small and unthreatening and the animal might leave you alone. Like the example you gave with the bear. Or with cats when they head butt you. They’re getting their scent on you. This is theirs. This is safe. You don’t leave your head vulnerable if you think that the person is gonna hurt you. I think it’s really stretching it to say oh dragons can understand your soul. Well maybe but I think it’s more reasonable to say that it’s just animal behaviour

Yes! Astrid has a loyal, brave and determined soul, Stormfly’s soul reflects Astrid’s. Hiccup is smart, kind, caring, creative, adventurous and curious,Toothless reflects that perfectly. The Nut twins are energetic, cunning, sneaky, trouble makers at heart and caring when it comes to their loved ones. That soul/personality fits perfectly with a Zippleback. Fishlegs is smart, kind,caring,cautious,protective and sympathetic. This is why he tamed Meatlug so easily. Snoutlout is hotheaded, stubborn, ambitious, determined and will protect his loved ones at any cost. This is why Hookfang and Snotlout are matches together. I can also see Toothless’ and the light fury’s babies being matched and tamed by Hiccup and Astrid’s daughter and son. They are both curious, kind, caring, creative and adventurous. They are all perfect matches

I saw it Sunday with friends. Our group had 8 adults age 30's to 70's plus a couple 8-year olds. We're all members of a sci-fi fan club in our town. We all love sci-fi, fantasy, superheroes, etc. We regularly meet to do fun activities or hang out with fellow geeks & to raise funds to help our local food bank & a few other local charities.

I think the body language has a lot to do with it as well, and even falls into sort of a pack mentality of sorts. The main key points is to exhibit similarities, then show vulnerability as a means of trust. In showing that you will not harm them, you also show that you trust them not to harm you as well, and in that the mutual bond is formed.

I like the idea of dragons beginning to trust another once they meet the human in a state of vulnerability. That would show the dragon that the human trusts them enough to be around them, even though the dragon could kill them, no problem. The dragon knows that and in turn, puts themselves in a vulnerable state by choosing to approach and trust the human. I like this because it shows that dragons and humans really are able to coexist in peace and friendship.

It's more than simply reaching out your hand. It's very obvious that to a dragon, trust is the most important thing. Not only does the dragon have to be able to trust its rider, but its rider must trust the dragon.

Unless the dragons are western thinkers. you know, that be an interesting villain for future HtTYD, a greedy and Smaug like dragon that can actually talk and is both smarter and more clever then normal dragons only to be balanced by the eastern sage kind of dragon who Hiccup has to convince to bring out of his secluded meditation to help.

I have a toy story/ monster inc theory well you know how in real life kids would hold a stuff animal or toy with them while they slept so the toy would protect them from the monsters. My theory is that one of the toys purposes is to protect their kid from the monsters and they act as obstacles around the room to mess up the monsters without being seen. That's why in the training simulation they have thoes toys on the floor to help prepare for any obstacles. I know in the comics the monsters don't believe the toys are alive but that doesn't mean that the toys don't know about the monsters and seeing how toys love their kid. I'm sure they'd try their best to protect them from the monsters
