In this video:
When it comes to gender disparity, the world of commercial airline piloting is one of the most skewed with a whopping 97% of all commercial pilots being male (4000 female commercial pilots vs. 130,000 male worldwide according to The International Society of Women Airline Pilots). Those numbers shift slightly when you factor in women who are qualified to fly private planes but not commercial. But there is still a huge difference in the number of males compared to females even in this case. According to the US Civil Airmen Statistics, in 2011 there were about 617,000 qualified pilots in the United States, 41,000 of which were women, which means just over 93% of all pilots in 2011 were men.

Now that you know the truth about the lack of female commercial pilots check out this video and find out the answer to the question- Why are Calico Cats Almost Always Female?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RclpeBH9LkY.html

At least for commercial flights around the world it may also be a cultural thing a lot of societies don't find it acceptable for women to hold this kind of job
@paultubbs3510

Because calico cats have tv role models, who help them aspire to better paying positions than their male counterparts, which is why they choose to be born female.

The "women don't want to become pilots because they want to spend more time at home" argument is quite strange. Air hostesses are far more numerous than pilots, so this is not a problem.
@azaryhaaurilen181
@azaryhaaurilen181 7 лет назад
Because Air Hostesses are allowed to be pretty and seen... Pilots are not seen, nor thave they the need/excuse to be pretty... hence what female would want to be couped up in the front, unseen, when they can walk the catwalk in fancy outfits all day... obviously... really few...

Azaryha Aurilen Maybe an ambitious female. I mean one with ambition to do something more than be pretty in a fancy outfit. There are a ton of these, though maybe not enough with 100k for the courses.

Nikola Tasev being a flight attendant also takes almost no training and requires no degree so it's very easy to be one. Flight attendants are basically waitresses on the plane
@Coasterman2222
@Coasterman2222 7 лет назад
Well these comments are all a little uneducated, boys, flight attendants are not just "waitresses on the plane". They are highly trained members of the crew, tested just like pilots every 6 months on emergency procedures such as forced/crash landing evacuation procedures, ditching (water landing) procedures, and checklist procedures (whereby if one pilot is rendered incapable of flying, known as incapacitation, the senior cabin crew member, who is third in command on a two pilot aircraft, assists the pilot in the cockpit by performing descent, approach and landing checklists.) They also give you drinks, but that is seriously underestimating their critical role in flight safety.
@fandingoORG
@fandingoORG 7 лет назад
Flight attendants may be glorified air waiters 99.9% of the time, but that ignores that they are highly trained emergency personnel. It's easy to forget that the spectacular safety reputation of civil aviation is due to the tireless work of multitude of occupations. Flight attendants are a critical link in the chain of proper emergency preparedness.

No need for a video, I'll explain it. To start off, garbage removal business is _not_ something you want to be in. This eliminates the theory 'more men choosing to do it'. You will do it as a last resort, once most other options are not there. Now, as with the general stereotype, 'men are supposed to work and women take care of the kitchen', men end up having to pick up garbage.
@Katt1n
@Katt1n 7 лет назад
What do you mean no sexism in the industry? You said it yourself, women less qualified are picked over men just because they are women. That is blatantly sexist.
@quitteable
@quitteable 7 лет назад
Ponyfag cunt No he didn't say less qualified, he said equally qualified. I'd be baffled if that meant an equal number of men and women are becoming pilots. To men the competition for the job is still mostly men. Just because women are treated with preference doesn't mean men are at a disadvantage in this case. I see how that is technically sexism but it's a non-issue. I'd like to be surrounded by more female engineers myself. This is a reasonable way of achieving that.
@Katt1n

@VideoMasher3000

Ponyfag cunt It's not. the simple reason why is because for something to be sexist, it needs to be based on discrimination, prejudice or stereotype. If it is a verifiable fact that men are better at this job based on their physical biology then it's not prejudice, stereotype or discrimination. therfore making it not sexist

@JamesJesseGTA
@JamesJesseGTA 7 лет назад
RobotDCLXVI as a certified aircraft mechanic who has at least 1 year combined experience in both general aviation and commercial aviation, have been given level 3 maintenance familiarization on the Boeing 767-300, and studied designs of various aircraft (both current and historical), I can say that modern day comercial jets these days are built with a lot of redundancies. Most commercial jets have at least 3 separate hydraulic systems that have separate means of powering them during flight and on the ground. They also have built in hydraulic fuses to minimize hydraulic fluid loss in the event of a leak. Even if primary power is lost on the system, a ram air turbine (RAT) can be deployed to provide basic power. But the Rat only works during flight and is only a last resort. PS: Aviation safety today is pretty solid these days. Unfortunately that's only because we had to learn from the mistakes of the past. Ever wondered why the windows on the commercial jets are all round in the cabin section? The De Havilland Comet, that's why.

Whoa, whoa, 'old up. "until recently women weren't allowed to fly combat aircraft" Is flat out wrong. Women have been flying combat aircraft since WW2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transport_Auxiliary I'd almost let you get away with misunderstanding the difference between combat aircraft and aircraft in combat, except both Turkey and Russia have had female front line combat pilots for over eighty years, and the UK and US have had female front line combat pilots for over twenty years. Sure, there aren't all that many, but when there aren't many that's what you say, not 'none'.

Not true for the USA. After the WASP (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_Airforce_Service_Pilots) were disbanded during World War II, women in the US military were not allowed to be trained in nor fly combat aircraft until 1993. UK women were in a similar situation after WWII auxiliary service. In contrast Israeli women were allowed to fly combat (I'm not sure since when). And yes the Russian Night Witches were pretty incredible! And by the way, US military women did not get submarine assignments until 2012.

Just want equal opportunity to apply and be selected, and the rest of the company & society to not think a women is weird for wanting to perform in a traditionally male profession. That includes the wives of the male pilots who are worried that a female pilot will steal their husbands and try to prevent their husbands from flying with women, or get worried when a female dispatcher calls their husband with their next flight assignment.

I’m an Airline Pilot, and I work with many competent female pilots. Their numbers are few, but they deserve to have a seat in the cockpit nevertheless. It is definitely due to career choices and not sexism in hiring practices, rather the opposite is true. Similarly qualified applicants will be selected because of the second X chromosome is the reality. Being hired, and remaining in the career are not the same thing. Some female pilots I have worked with left the profession for a few years, and some leaving completely to have children. That’s the reality of biology, and is their choice. It is not due to sexism. Last year, I ran into a former co-worker who quit after trying to juggle a flying job and being a mother. She told me candidly that it was the best decision she ever made; she seemed truly happy and was pregnant with her second. Her husband worked in the offshore oil industry and made good money. Good for her. Down the road should she return to flying, she wouldn’t be joining her colleagues at the same level she would have had she kept flying, no she would be just a pilot who hadn’t flown for years. When we worked together, we flew turboprop Beech King Air 200’s. I currently fly Boeing 737-800’s at an airline. Once she gained the experience necessary, she would be more than welcome in my cockpit. Basically, it’s due to personal choices, not sexism.

That's the thing, I am totally fine with women in aviation, I can care less which gender or race I'm sitting next to in the flight deck, but I'm just sick and tired of these people who make the biggest deals out of it. Like those videos on RU-vid who over-emphasize the title whenever a woman is flying, it's like I do not care. People like that ruin aviation when they have to make it a huge gender issue. Looking at what you said in your comment, I wouldn't want a girl to feel like she should become a pilot only to quit a few years later to become a mother. All those hard working flight and school hours essentially all for nothing... just let women do what they want.

You should never force employers to employ someone based on race or gender. That is inequality at it's finest. If a white man and a black man were to get the same job offer, but the black man had less experience but the law required your workplace to have more black workers or face legal issues, the black man could get the job simply because of his race. It's not racist or sexist to say that the person more qualified should get the job. Not saying that minorities and women can't get the job, I'm black myself, just that people should hold off on diversity regulations unless there is clear discrimination at play.

No one is asking for the less qualified candidate to get the job. Just want equal opportunity to apply and be selected, and the rest of the company & society to not think a women is weird for wanting to perform in a traditionally male profession. Unfortunately studies have shown that often men are chosen for the job when an equal or better qualified female exists, and similar studies for ethnic names. In these studies the persons responsible for making the hiring decisions were shown resumes with and without the name of the applicant. The selectors were biased on assumptions the selectors made based on the candidate's name.

Actually there’s no quota, your employees must just ROUGHLY reflect the local demographics, unless they’re not enough who are qualified. So if a city is 80% black and roughly 50% women, a company is going to have a hard time justifying an all male staff who are 75% white unless it can be proven that the reason why is that these genders or races can’t do the job (like a bathroom attendant must be the same gender as those using the bth) or that there’s not enough qualified women and minorities. If so, that often leads to an investigation of local schools and training facilities to ensure there’s no discrimination

Most of the rest come from us just wondering something- something you do a lot when this is what you do for a living- or interesting things we find while researching other topics. For instance, when researching about how Abraham Lincoln established the Secret Service on the day he was assassinated, one might also come across the fact that Lincoln's son almost fell into a moving train, but his life was saved by the brother of John Wilkes Booth, who saw him falling and grabbed him. /true story (In fact, Lincoln is like a nexus of interesting topics from our experience.) While the RU-vid channel isn't terribly popular (yet *crosses fingers*), the website is (about 3+ million visitors per month, and I *think* approaching 200M-ish views since its launch in 2010). While ads pay crap, regardless of internet platform, this nonetheless provides us not only with the funds needed to run this major money sink of a channel :-), but also an endless stream of great topic ideas from great fans... who for whatever reason seem to hate the RU-vid channel based on the feedback so far. (Some have sent us scathing emails about that we need to stop doing videos and just stick with articles! ;-) Normally we're keen on listening to user feedback, but are presently ignoring this line of constructive criticism.) Most of our RU-vid fans also seem little interested in the site itself. Kind of interesting, actually. Diversification I guess? This particular topic was a question posed in email by one "Sarah T." The only reason why more women don't fill these roles is because they don't try hard enough. And claiming that you aren't getting "equal opportunities" doesn't count as trying. That's also not to say that there aren't unqualified white males who are getting in, but because there are more white males applying without any a/a benefit, it's less likely to happen. Over time, it won't matter, as more diversity happens simply because the numbers of applicants will offer the best of their groups, as it has with white males.

Being a pilot requires you to be far away from home, family and friends for long periods of times at very regularly intervals. It is also a dangerous job which can get you killed, particularly by your own mistakes. About the sexism in the industry: companies hire people based on their ability to produce profits. Lets start with an analogy, female doctors. Assuming that it costs the same to train a man and a woman about medicine, it is still a huge investment. Now what happens after their training? The man will work for 40 years at 60 hours a week. The woman will work for 2 years at 40 hours, then gets pregnant (2 years at 0 hours), then works part time (2 years at 20 hours), then gets pregnant again (2 years at 0 hours), then maybe work part time again (5 years at 20 hours) and then retires completely. This is not a net benefit for society with the female doctor. The education (at least in most western countries) is payed for by taxation, i.e. everyone. The reason why no politician is ever pointing out that educating female medical doctors is a much higher financial risk than educating males is quite obvious. Now think about pilots. Getting (and maintaining) a piloting license is a huge investment, which is not payed for by taxation, but instead by the pilots or the airline companies. While a father of a small child will still work as a pilot, and while a female doctor with a small child at home may still work at the local hospital part time, a female pilot with a small child at home will never ever even think about stepping into a plane. Pregnancy is basically terminating the pilot career. Not because of the evil sexist airline company, but because the women just does not want to fly anymore. It is a completely rational, economic decision to not train female pilots. The military is subsidising the education costs, just like with medical doctors. But even if the training does not cost the airline anything (at the expense of the taxpayer), there is still the permanent threat of the woman terminating her career forever by becoming pregnant. Would you hire someone in such an important position, who may quit any moment for reasons which you are not even allowed to ask in an interview without getting sued?
@Chavagnatze
@Chavagnatze 7 лет назад
Its funny how all that "rationality" goes straight out of the window when people are talking about "gender disparities." Bringing up the obvious like sexual dimorphism and the fact that females, in general, are not interested in technical things like engineering, factory building, or directing huge aluminium tubes, full of jet fuel and people, through the air is a death sentence.

I'm a woman, and I wanted to be a pilot when I was in kindergarten or first grade. In fact, it was the first career path I ever considered pursuing. I'm not entirely sure what influenced my decision, but it didn't occur to me at the time that girls couldn't or shouldn't become pilots. At that age, I likely wasn't exposed to enough of society and the media to realize how few female pilots there were. Vehicles in general (cars, trucks, boats, construction equipment, etc.) have been heavily marketed toward boys and men and still are. Society did not want women to have freedom of mobility; they were to be tied to the home. Women were even discouraged from riding bikes at one point because of the supposed sexual stimulation via the bike seat! Thankfully, we have moved on from those dark ages... Anyway, I decided not to become a pilot, but I'd love to fly a private plane someday!

Lady of Hyrule I don't belive your story a bit. I live in Sweden and we have for decades done everything to get girls in to male dominated jobs and vice versa. But the outcome is even more stereotypical choice - the gender equality paradox. We have taken away every bit of social hurdels and both sex choose by interest. Men tend to be interested in things and women in people. This is scientific facts. See Simon Baren Choens research.

Even when females are "forced" into science classes on college most drop out because it was never meant for them. Rather then feminist bullshit propaganda... why not let the women make their OWN choices in life? There are a lot of sexist female jobs as well. Not many men are nannies, not many men nurses, not many men are day care workers. Especially jobs involving small children there is a serious bias against men as somehow EVERY men is a potential pedophile rapist, hence no men should be allowed near small children. Where is equality there? Also I want equality for women as sewage workers and front-line ground troops (in all-female platoons). Those jobs should be forced on them, so they know what REAL equality tastes like.

@@suzandefneklc8167 What I meant was the european college system or for you American folks "science major". When they literally study physics, math or chemistry. I'm not talking about a business student that has to take basic math classes. Those "majors" are very difficult and from 100 students an average of 60-85 drops out. Why? Because they notice it is totally different from what they thought and expected it to be easier. Statistically normal for 100 science students are 5-15 girls. Usually only 1 or 2 actually make it, the rest drops out. It is those 1 or 2 that are pationate about it and who belong in that field. I also didn't mention teachers for lower grades are mostly women, or hairdressers and cashiers. There are plenty of "majority women" jobs, because these heavily depend on social skills (and nursing skills as in caring for another). One could say it is almost like most women work in the jobs they are biologically suited for. There's no overt sexism when it comes to becoming pilots or scientists, but there is natural selection. Have you ever played cards/games with mathematicians? If you like to win at least once, you shouldn't. They are an entirely different "race" of people. Those special people easily graduate in science major classes, whereas everyone else struggles really hard. Speaking pure statistics, 9 out of 10 of those special ones are men. Doesn't mean the 1 woman is better or worse, no, she is just as brilliant as any of the other 9. So making up bullshit quotas only discriminates men (and actually is sexist). It then forces "ordinary women" into fields that require these special people. Due to the quota the ordinary women get the job, eventhough there are men 100times more qualified to do the job. When it comes to pilots, doctors, nuclear physicists and other extremely critical jobs, do you want to have a "homer simpson" behind the desk, or an actual professional who can do their job? Leave the jobs for the special people (male or female), let the colleges/unis weed out the special from the ordinary folks. Quotas only lead to morons behind desks (male or female). Just let every man and woman decide where they want to work, or study. Stop quotas and bullshit propaganda (indoctrinating girls that they are better than boys). Not everyone can become a pilot, scientist or doctor.

Lack of role models? I didn't see any video game testers in any movie, but I decided to become one. Why was I able to choose a career without movie role models. Am I special?
@SkyLukeComedy
@SkyLukeComedy 7 лет назад
TrulyStupidGaming Actually you became a video game tester because at some point you had an insecurity to do anything that was mainstream and would make you feel "accepted" For some reason you gain a feeling of completeness by doing something that had no role models, against the herd or so to speak. That's just a simple psychological breakdown. His point which you clearly can't explore unless laid out in front if you, yet another part if your insecurity, is that society creates norms through media, one being movies, as we only see pilots in 2 scenarios. Real life and movies. While most careers are supported through many forms of reality, the only things we find for pilots are movies and airports. which means that women, who are also in general, more inclined to travel with family etc, rather than alone, sees traveling as a past time, not Business related. So growing up women don't see flying as a career simply because flying doesn't come to mind. And because women in movies aren't ported as pilots, for the same reason... directors probably don't want to convey there are more women as pilots than there are, as people would not feel the movie is very realistic to their experiences... thus they wouldn't even consider women for pilots in roles. Thus growing up you were not exposed to the idea even of being a pilot, and probably through your insecurities you had about fitting in, you actually choose to go against the mainstream and saught out something much more abstract. Gaming probably was a big part of your life growing up, or at least the idea of gaming, and a world where you can be semi detached to reality, became helpful to think about, as you could distance yourself from reality... and so at some point the idea came to light, and you are now a video game tester, fulfilling your purpose to the fullest extent possible, except for your need to tell people about your life choice, and how far from normal it is, in the RU-vid comment section on a video about Being a pilot!

The thing with trying to psychoanalyze someone from a comment on YT is that you have very little to go on, whereas the critique is pretty well-founded. As a woman in IT, I am an outlier simply because very few women choose to go into IT, or STEM fields in general. And you know what? That's Okay! Men and women are physiologically different. While not a hard-and-fast rule, men tend to like riskier and higher-paying jobs, and women tend to like jobs that have a lot of interaction with others and non-rote work involved, which may pay less. I am a woman who enjoys problem-solving, so I work as a network security schema designer on a team of 12 as the only woman. Does that mean we need intense initiatives to push women into STEM? No. Because it's a choice, and there are differences between men and women. But, if you'd rather go into psychoanalyzing someone over the internet? I'd simply say you're an incredibly insecure person who feels the need to write a mean-spirited essay trying to belittle somebody who feels differently than you do on a complicated issue. Have a nice day! ♥

I'm no expert, but from things my wife and sister have said (long time primary education teachers, both with specialties in reading and literacy), I believe it's really just a matter of having X number of education hours in the day, with X+Y number of things that people would like to teach, but never have time for everything. So they have to prioritize what is most beneficial, not just what is beneficial in some way. Obviously kids being able to read/write in cursive is becoming more and more a thing that won't benefit them at all really, particularly by the time the kids learning it today graduate. Thinking of the advancements in technology even in the last decade, something that seems to only be accelerating, kids learning to write today are going to graduate high school in a very different world than the one we live in, with virtual reality and artificial intelligence set to cause some fundamental shifts in society in the next couple decades, much like the internet and smart phones have done recently. (Not just talking out of my butt; AI is actually my area of expertise, masters degree and all. ;-) It's astounding the advancements made there recently, and VR is also progressing incredibly rapidly. :-)) On that note, it's interesting to think about the fact that we're rapidly progressing to a state where we might very seriously have to think about whether teaching handwriting at all is worth the significant education time over teaching other things. Certainly it still has significant value today, but 10 or 20 years from now? Maybe not. It does help with things like fine motor skills, but will the significant time commitment eventually be worth it over teaching something more useful to kids? Or progress other areas faster so when they get a little older they can be taught something more useful like computer programming, which has been shown to give many of the cognitive benefits of learning a second language, while also teaching a useful skill, one that heavily teaches and emphasizes logic precepts, makes them more literate in technology, and teaches kids to break down big problems into small ones that can be coded, as well as a practical use of the mathematics they learn elsewhere, but never otherwise see the point of. It's actually pretty astounding that programming hasn't become a core requirement for kids today. It's so diverse in its benefits to them and is even something pre-teens can learn with proper instruction. Kind of an interesting thing to think about. I wonder if at some point handwriting will be something taught in art class, like calligraphy or something. :-)

Not true. Many girls have no idea that women can be pilots b/c there are so few examples for them to see. And not too long ago, women were preventing from applying for professional & military pilot jobs based on their gender. Unfortunately in some cases this gender bias still exists today (see my previous post about a corporate pilot recruiter).
@you_just

nminenko i don't understand this. Girls think they can't be pilots? Why not? And why can't they see a male pilot and think, "I wanna be like them when I grow up?"
@nminenko
@nminenko 7 лет назад
Because often times society tells girls that they can't or shouldn't do something because they are female. And sometimes companies have hiring policies or practices that reinforce this. Having a role model to aspire to is an important motivating factor and the more that role model is like you/you are like the role model in various aspects, the stronger the correlation will be that you can be successful like the role model is. Gender is one of the first characteristics that children notice & differentiate. For how long in the USA were airline pilots and astronauts male only? On the flip side, I know a female airline pilot whose female friend is also a pilot. One day her young son asked her "Mommy, can boys be pilots too?" Humans make inferences and assumptions from what they see around them. And then we have [what's the word?] people who profess their beliefs in written comments on blogs & videos about how women can't fly, can't drive, are only good for XXX, etc.

+You_just For the citations you are looking for, check out: **hwww.freepatentsonline.com/article/Career-Development-Quarterly/147914527.html **Google search for more articles: importance of role models in career choices **Google search: hiring bias study based on resume for many examples of hiring bias based on gender, race, & nationality **Read the studies that are referenced in Sheryl Sandberg's book "Lean In" **Check out studies highlighted by The Catalyst Group Until very recently, the company my father worked for would not hire women to be pilots, they would only hire women to be cabin attendants with the option of being promoted to purser. Yet men could be direct-hired into the purser position. That company's closest competitor also until very recently would not hire women to be pilots: men were pilots and women were cabin crew. Now they have hired a handful of female pilots but I have never seen male cabin crew at that company. Regarding your comment: "I don't think anyone really listens to those people who say women can't do X because of their gender. Do you?" 1) Do you have any idea what it's like to grow up in an environment where you are told that you can't do a particular career because it's a man's job and you're not male? It's much different than being in an environment where you are encouraged, perhaps receive advice & guidance on how to do it, or even better receiving money and/or access to a plane for flight training. Fair point: my father didn't have any female pilots in his company that could have been role models for a counter-example to his arguments. 2) It's not just a matter about shutting out the naysayers. It's also a matter about the people in the organization who make the hiring and evaluation decisions to get past their personal biases and/or any biases in the corporate culture.

Or as the John Hopkins study concluded, "Crashes of general aviation aircraft account for 85 percent of all aviation deaths in the United States. The crash rate for male pilots, as for motor vehicle drivers, exceeds that of crashes of female pilots," explains Susan P. Baker, MPH, professor of health policy and management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. "Because pilot youth and inexperience are established contributors to aviation crashes, we focused on only mature pilots, to determine the gender differences in the reasons for the crash." The researchers extracted data for this study from a larger research project on pilot aging and flight safety. The data were gathered from general aviation crashes of airplanes and helicopters between 1983 and 1997, involving 144 female pilots and 287 male pilots aged 40-63. Female pilots were matched with male pilots in a 1:2 ratio, by age, classes of medical and pilot certificates, state or area of crash, and year of crash. Then the circumstances of the crashes and the pilot error involved were categorized and coded without knowledge of pilot gender. The researchers found that loss of control on landing or takeoff was the most common circumstance for both sexes, leading to 59 percent of female pilots¹ crashes and 36 percent of males¹. Experiencing mechanical failure, running out of fuel, and landing the plane with the landing gear up were among the factors more likely with males, while stalling was more likely with females. The majority of the crashes -- 95 percent for females and 88 percent for males -- involved at least one type of pilot error. Mishandling aircraft kinetics, such as incorrect use of the rudder, poor response to a bounce, or inability to recover from a stall, was the most common error for both sexes, but was more prevalent among females (accounting for 81 percent of the crashes) than males (accounting for 48 percent). Males, however, appeared more likely to be guilty of poor decision-making, risk-taking, and inattentiveness, examples of which include misjudging weather and visibility or flying an aircraft with a known defect. Females, though more likely to mishandle or lose control of the aircraft, were generally more cautious than their more venturesome male counterparts.

Strength requirement actually made a lot of sense, because before fly-by-wire became a thing it could take considerable strength to keep plane under control. Good exmaple were Soviet female combat pilots. 586 and 588 regiments had no issues with their planes, as they were flying fighters and recon biplanes (serving as night bombers) respectively. 587 on the other hand were flying Pe-2 light bombers, and female pilots required assistance of navigator to get fully loaded "Peshka" off ground.

So, the biggest factor stopping women from becoming pilots, a job that seemingly doesn't interest girls or women, includes joining the military, a task that seemingly doesn't interest women or girls. Perhaps a script revision was in order here... "Why aren't there more female commercial pilots? They weren't allowed to be, but now they can and simply don't want to be." The other five minutes could be spent saying the same thing about women being plumbers, electricians, soldiers, welders, construction workers, garbage haulers, truck drivers, taxi drivers, oil drillers, firefighters, police officers, bouncers, day laborers, industrial factory workers, and farm hands. If there's still time left, toss in that men don't seem to have much interest in becoming elementary teachers, nurses, telephone operators, midwives, or professional cleaners.

It's not exactly that "girls don't want to be pilots", it's more like they're *actively discouraged*. When I was a little girl, I wanted to become a pilot. Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I'd say "pilot" and they'd *invariably* come back with a variation of "but you're a girl!" One person thought she was being "supportive" when she replied instead "a pilot, huh? well... it's not that difficult for a girl". I swear, not a single person outside my family reacted like my ambition was normal. This kind of thing eats away at you when you're only a child and as years go by, you inevitably doubt yourself. So, people, don't buy that girls and boys are somehow inherently different (and therefore gender disparity is not a problem). Rather, we are shoehorned into different roles. (I eventually had to give up that dream because it turned out I had eyesight problems that would disqualify me. But I still shake my head at how society judged my childhood plans for the future.)

My ex-husband is a commercial pilot. He came there after being a pilot in the Royal Navy for 12 years. He and his pilot buddies would come to the United States (which is how we met, i know who cares...) bc aircraft fuel was so expensive in the UK (and in Europe in general ). It was literally cheaper for them to come over here to up their flying hours on fixed wing than to do it in their home country. I mention that bc all of these guys were military and there was NO WAY any of them could have afforded flying lessons etc unless they were part of the armed forces. And i asked them if they're were any women pilots -they said 1 or 2 and that they were "rubbish" anyway. And these guys were young -early 30s. Believe me, tge stereotype is still there. The pilots that I KNEW at RNAS Culdrose thought all women pilots sucked. Just saying what they said....

I had few female flight instructors (PPL on local field), one was amazing parachute jumper that set up few national records. But in my country air force they are generally hated as only 1 or 2 of them aren't daughters of generals and high rankers, so skill isn't required of them at all. They really give bad reputation to female pilots.
@JohnDoe-pf6qp
@JohnDoe-pf6qp 7 лет назад
It's completely economic: if you don't log your flight hours in the military the only way to get them is to pay for them. The cost is huge, and pilots actually don't make nearly as much as some people think they do. So even when you get a job flying a smaller regional jet, until you've amassed the hours needed to fly larger aircraft, the pay check is going to be tiny. Even more so relative to the cost of getting that job. So really, male or female, without military service becoming a commercial airline pilot isn't a great opportunity.
@thierryvt

While I was doing my pilot's training I did ask a couple of (girl) friends if they didn't want to join. Most guys answered along the lines of "would be cool but: " too expensive/ i don't have the time/i don't think i'm capable/ don't want to put in the effort. So there was a general interest in becoming a pilot but no motivation. Whereas the couple of female friends I questioned mostly answered in the "i'm not interested" category. Ofcourse this doesn't really count as evidence and I didn't really talk about it with that many people but it might give some insight I guess? (ps: my class was about 30 people 5 of which were female)

How you data set is too low to be useful in the broad picture. For kicks I took and passed ground school, but the actual flying lessons where beyond my budget, and the general cost of private flying was as well. I knew one woman who became a private pilot, but her dad had the money and the need to use private aircraft in his business.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot because planes were badass, not because of the gender of the pilots. You can't even identify the gender of a fighter pilot while they're flying. Curiously, I didn't want to work construction or any other 100% male-dominated field. Kids aren't robots that want to do what they see people doing as long as that person looks like them. @matsv201

"Hight requirement" I call bullshit on that one... Not because is not true, but rather how it was implemented.. The issue is that there is both a minimum and maximum high requirement. The Maximum one eliminate about as many men as the minimum women. So there really not a bases for gender discrimination 93% of pilots are men... Well 99.8% of garbage workers are men, and i don´t see any feminist complaining about that. In my field, electronic design there are less than 5% women finishing university and even less actually working. And i again don´t see anyone complaining. And electronic design is not even a bad job. Its a fairly good salary and its a interesting and varied job. The physical requirement is also rather low. 3:50 "the same could be said about any industry...." Well no. Almost all industries that have similar level of dedication combined with a similar level of education have less than 10% female workers. A dare every one to find one exception. 4:00 "you don´t see female commercial pilots on TV or movies"... well that is false. They are far more common on TV and movies than in real life. Of cause, this is more so true about military pilots for the simple reason military pilots is more prevalent in movies. I bet that more people have heard about Emilia Earhart than Lindbergh. 4:18 "about young boys pilot was the second most common carer chose" Well yes, but you don´t chose a profession before you are in your late teens. And it normally change quite a bit between a 6 year old and a 16 year old. This is a stupid statment. Just find anything that have correlation en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation 4:50 "a position that was not open in most countrys..." Well, firstly this is wrong. Military pilots was actually in many country's the first position that was available for women, Actually military transports pilot have been open to women since the 1940-tys in the USA, and fighter/bomber pilots since 1977. Assuming that the fighter pilot was 18 when enlisted in 1977 she would be 57 years no, and actually quite close to retirement. This argument is also stupid because a military transport pilot would be far more suitable to be a commercial pilot than a fighter pilot would. Thirdly the amount of military pilots that become commercial pilots its since the 90-tys fairly low. It was really back in the 50-tys and 60-tys that the bulk of commercial pilots was from a military background. Now its quite rare. Its not correct that 1993 was the first year that it was permitted for a women to become a combat pilot. This was the year of the first actually female fighter pilot. And there was actual female helicopter pilot prior to 1993. (the first US Army female helicopter pilot was already back in 1974) The military angle is mostly bullshit. There is not that high of a flow of military pilots to the commercial sector. According to FAA stats in 1970 there was 70% of commercial pilots with military training, in 2001 there was down to 40%. I can´t find any newer stats, but if the trend continues its probably down to 10-30%. Around 80% not having military training This statement is also stupid for a other reason. The percentage of private female pilots is actually higher than the number of commercial pilots. So its rather the opposite is true. More percentage female than men take private lessons and don´t end up as commercial pilots. This is clearly not the reason behind the low number of female pilots. Well if investing the dollas on education to be more profitably would attract females, then i would think that the number of females in gender studies would be very low. Again, we see the exact opposite. This is also true for most engineering field. While most engineering education cost about the same and still some engineering careers have a lot higher wages, females actually tend to attract to the engineering field that have the lowest wages. The reason for this have nothing to do with women, but more with people. When choicing a education most people tend to prefer the most popular or the easiest one. This make a surplus of some types of engineers, driving there salaries down. While a actually very few people select education due to salaries, and the once that do that is mostly men. So again, we see the absolute opposite that is described in the video. Fact is that Pilot is a high wages job, cherypicking a position with low wages don´t make it untrue. Like most jobs, the initial wages are very low but its generally increase quite rapidly. Most complicated job have a traini job initially, and you may get twice or even three times the wages after just 2 or 3 years. This is not unique to just pilots, but applies to almost all high education work. There is nothing in the argument to put the bill your self that would make it less likely for a women to be a pilot than men. The men have to do it just as much. This argument just hold water if you have the assumption that women don´t like to pay the bill. Can also say where i live there is a 5-10 year block for military pilots to be commercial pilots. While we have quite a few military pilots per capita, the amount of military pilots in commercial aviation is even less than in the US. Still female pilots is just as rare.

I would put it down to socialisation at home. Too many girls are brought up to want something as unrealistic as a 'princess' rather than something that could be potentially realistic such as a pilot. Parents typically do not buy car and plane toys for little girls (i am saying typically, some do, mine did). Also, it's still not seen acceptable for women to have careers that would keep them away from husband, home and kids for too long (many years ago, an air stewardess had to be unmarried to get the job). To the extent that your assertions are true, they're just not a big factor in piloting ability. For example modern airline crashes are usually caused by errors in judgement and communication, not lack of physical or even technical ability. Nearly all the reflex and motor stuff in a modern airliner is done by computers, which are better at it than either women or men. An easy place to start if you're interested in causes of plane crashes is Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers": blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2008/12/04/malcolm-gladwell-on-culture-cockpit-communication-and-plane-crashes/ It's very popsci and the central conclusion is controversial but it will inform you about some of the background research.

The travelling pilot doesn't notice the dearth of females flying cargo in recips or among the bush pilot ranks because they never see them. Yes, it's true that, compared with the ratio of male commercial pilots, a higher percentage sit in the more glamorous and highest paying cockpits. Just look at the picture at 5:01 and tell me: "Yeah, I would feel perfectly safe in having that woman fly me over the Atlantic Ocean." -- That's also one factor...

The fact that majority of pilots who do cocaine and alcohol before the flight starts is male. I supposed I would feel perfectly safe in having that woman fly me over the Atlantic Ocean

The fuck's that supposed to mean, man? She looks like any other commercial pilot, other than being a woman.

You forgot a few things: 1) High levels of radiation at altitude, higher than nulcear plant workers are allowed to be exposed to. Radiation is considred more dangerous to women as they pass on issues to their children. 2) Women on average have a higher white to grey brain cells than men, this makes them more intelligent on average at social tasks, but poorer at spacial awareness tasks such as landing a plane. This is where the stereotype of women crashing cars comes from, as they are more likely to misjudge a distance. 3) Men are much better at multi-tasking, a test for this was produced specifically for military pilots, and involves keeping track of many things at once, and on average women tend to be much weaker in this field, which of course is a contradiction to the traditional stereotype. (a stereotype likely formed because of their superior social intelligence, which allows them to converse with much less concentration, whilst doing other tasks) 4) Similar to the previous point, men are also able to concentrate harder and stay on task more easily. They also are much less capable of emotion, which hinders pilot decisions. There are a few reasons women are better as pilots of course, namely they are more responsible and less likely to drink and do drugs or commit suicide to name but a few, but they do not outweigh the downsides. Certainly there should be no law stopping women pilots, as averages are just that, they are simply much less likely to pass. The interest factor is definitely duplicitous on your end, as girls are more interested in faces, and boys in mechanisms, entirely devoid of social pressure, and the more equal the society, the more they gravitate to separate fields.

They've had female Naval Aviators since the 74, and female USAF pilots since 1976. Col. Eileen Collins saw action in 1983 over Grenada while flying a C-141 transport, although technically not considered combat. Col. Collins was selected as an astronaut in 1990, and flew 4 shuttle missions. Two as pilot, two more as Commander.

It's a man's job, for fuck sake. Anyone with common sense knows that. But in this politically correct world, we now need token statistics. "Hi. This is Barbara, your emotionally unstable pilot for the day. Incidentally, I know nothing about engineering and I'm feeling moody. Welcome aboard". Anyone's knuckles getting white with fear?

Women being able to be fighter pilots was probably a very small reason. Consider that you want fighter pilots to be your astronauts, what you want for commercial pilots are heavy pilots.

Remember Captain Sullenberger was quoted as saying at the moment he would not recommend a career as a commercial pilot to his children and knows no other pilot that has either.

I am an airline pilot. I love flying with women. Because of the unjust perception by the public, most women feel they need to be more professional and skilled than their men counterparts. It's sad, but the end result is that most women pilots are excellent.

Ive seen weird pilots in my life. - Panama, a pilot comes into a small chruch and says in spanish: god don't let this plane fall, I leave it in your hands. - Turkey, a pilot comes from the small mosque in ataturk airport saying: allahu akbar... - Paris, a black tall woman pilot confidently comes with a smaller woman copilot, 2 people leave... wat, why?

The majority of women wouldn't be comfortable being a pilot. The majority of men wouldn't be comfortable being a pilot. Those who do should be given an equal chance of realising their potential. The above should be stating the obvious. The most valid reason for this video is to establish why that so far into the 21st Century the gender imbalance is so high - despite many laws around the world strongly suggesting this shouldn't be the case. I don't know much about the aviation industry, but I'm still impressed with the delivery and amount of tangible content in a video lasting less than seven minutes.

Its good that we now have equality of opportunity in this field. If a woman wants to become a pilot she can. This is what we should be striving for.

A major factor as to why young women are not interested in becoming pilots is that women tend to be oriented to people rather things, and flying an aircraft is very thing-oriented.
