The #Pope's public silence on the #Holocaust have often made him the subject of historical #controversy.

Pope Pius XII's response to World War II, and his public silence regarding the Holocaust, has led to historical controversy. However, after the Vatican opened its archives from the war era to scholars, it emerged that the Pope opted for silence to avoid persecution from the Third Reich and allow the Church to covertly provide humanitarian aid. The Pope established an office to connect Jewish and non-Jewish individuals to their families after separations caused by the war. Critics say the Pope did not openly condemn Nazism to secure safety for the church and clergy in Europe, but others insist that the Church's activity during the war demonstrates that Pius XII always supported people persecuted by the Nazis. Pius XII was declared Venerable by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009, meaning that the controversy surrounding him should not impede his path to sainthood.

@@femteezy1992 The Israeli Philharmonic performed at the Vatican, in gratitude for the actions of Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust. In other words, for saving 860,000 Jewish lives. If you do some research, perhaps then we can all shout, “YAY!”

I don’t understand why the falsehood of Pius XII’s supposed silence is being brought up over and over through the years. During and after WWII, Pius was greatly praised. At his death in 1958, Gold Meir said, “When fearful martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of the Pope was raised for the victims. The life of our times was enriched by a voice speaking out on the great moral truths above the tumult of daily conflict.” This along with other contemporaneous praise can be found by anyone if they do a search, on line or in old newspapers. It's a puzzle to me why, over and over, these falsehoods about Pius XII specifically keep cropping up, 80-plus years later. What is going on? It's truly a mystery.

He should not have blessed Hitler and Mussolini. That said he did a great work for many people during the war.

As a Christian you blessed everyone. Is actually the best thing that you can do. to bless the Christ within that person. In hopes for the spark of the Holy Spirit to touch them. I am sure that if they could they would have performed an exorcism instead 😊🙏

I must admit great ambivalence about this Pope. His predecessor, Pius IX, during war time, adopted the following position in an encyclical. He condemned the "so-called myth of race and blood" and the idolizing of the State. The encyclical stated that "that man as a person possesses rights he holds from God, and which any collectivity must protect against denial, suppression or neglect". His successor did not. He said nothing.

Good, pat yourself on the back for your “ambivalence” and tuck yourself in. Pope Pius XII led the way in saving 860,000 Jewish lives during the Holocaust. That is, more than any other individual or organization. He spoke out when he felt it prudent, without causing even more retaliation from the Nazi regime. Vatican Radio was a tool he made good use of. Clear enough?
