Peter DeFelice So i tested my R1 going by a walmart and walgreens of course it picks up K band at very long range. But still cops can pass me and my detector isn't detecting them at least 70% of the time. I went from being able to see almost any cop to just relying on my own eyes to see them within a matter of months and now I'm just confused as to why my detector would still work right on K band but not KA

Mine did the same thing, The first night I expected a problem I took my sons radar detector drove by every police station in the area, police in my area only run Ka, until I found one that I guess an officer left his car idealing and radar on. Unplugged my son's Radar Detector and plugged in the R1 drove by (thinking maybe it was a distance thing) no alert, went into the menu and made sure Ka was on - No alert, tried a factory reset - No Alert. I even when home Updated the software and tried again, no alert. I suggest you do a factory reset and find a find lots of police (you can use wazy to see where police are sitting in your area or drive by every police station like I did until you get lucky). I will say that Unidens website for warranty repairs did not fill me with a lot of confidence or hope that they were going to fix my radar detector, none of the returns faq dealt with radar detectors just scanners, basically you put a handwritten note with your address and a copy of your receipt in the box and ship it off to a 3rd party fix it shop. I was thrilled that they exchanged mine with a working unit, instead of them trying to fix it, sending it back to me and asking "is it working now" (I had this problem over and over again with a Toshiba laptop in the 90's that has scared me for life). Peter DeFelice Well weird news lol my radar just decided to start working again. All of a sudden the cops are visible from miles away. I'm a little skeptical but I was just ready to get an x80. I relied heavily on my R1. But if it starts up again, I will ask Uniden about the warranty repair or exchange. If nothing is done, I will just end up getting an escort again.

Mostly true, but in New Jersey. Unknown to most, it is legal (in other states also) to use judgement as a legal form of speed detection. What? Yes, if a police officer can recite a special formula (even if he didn't use it) to caculate your speed, in court. You can be found guilty of speeding. (Lawyer, blah blah, blah.) Google if you do not believe me. They will usually tell you they got you on radar (most people won't challange them, at least not in court). They are betting on the fact you knew you were speeding, and were probably going faster then their estimate. (Wow, I was actually doing 95mph, not 80mph. I got lucky). Yes, speeding is speeding, but just by going to court this ticket will be lowered, often to non-moving violation. So the slower speed benefits you. Also tip of the day, hearsay is not admissible. But you must object to it as quickly as pissible in court. The officer that registered you speeding is the only one that can testify. The above happened to me, was told they got me on radar. Oh I turned it on as you were passing. On Hold method. (Long time ago). I believe I didn't detect until after he gave me the ticket (also after I challanged him politely). He went back to his car and his radar was turned on, and was on constant on mode. The speed he said I was going wasn't accurate, 5 mph faster than I was going with cruise control. But I was speeding, so that was a pointless arguement (I still made and admittted to). Never have (a huge) problem admitting when I am wrong. That's why I wanted to see what was said (I fell for the click bait). In the pass a good excuse to get out of tickets was, too windy to get accurate radar detection (objects being blown or wind affecting radar). Would like that to be answered in future Q&A.

Some agencies have what’s called moving radar where there’s a radar gun built into the car that can detect speed of cars infront and possibly behind, so you are right if your area has that but I have no idea how common it is

its more like, you always position yourself and control your speeds so theres always a car in front of you that can bait io radar

That's not the point I'm intending to make. To sum it up, there are situations where a radar detector can be defeated and you need to have realistic expectations. It's like saying birth control is "only" 98% effective. It's extremely effective in most situations and thus way better than going unprotected. Being 98% effective does not mean it's a waste of money. Rather, it's important to understand it's not 100%.

Sometimes, yeah, depending on the pulse pattern, LED used, and degree of filtering in the RD, that can work. :)

It's very common. Maybe they have their guns turned off. Maybe they don't do speed enforcement at all. If they're not actively using their radar gun, your DS1 won't alert.

I went five over the speed limit to make a lane change and the car behind me was a undercover cop. I was just wondering if they are a waist of money.

Yep. Luckily those situations happen often so radar detectors are useful in practice, but they’re not going to always alert to every officer for these reasons.

That's good that they pay the ticket. It's just keeping keeping it off of your insurance is the issue I believe that is most peoples concern. I always try for improper equipment (it's like you never got it and it doesn't go on your record) Or a nine over reduction. You only get like two license points for that. Really depends on the DAs mood the morning of traffic court which one youll get. Advice be the first one there when they open the door, dress nice and be polite and sincere. You'll have an opportunity to talk about the ticket right then and there and thats the only two options you have at that point. They're (the county and the road pirates) are only after money. I've had like 6 speeding tickets and I was able to get out of all of them. I've always heard that insurance won't go up as long as you're nine over. Any higher then they can penalize you with higher insurance for at least three years.

Around here (WI), it's almost like the State uses instant on most of the time and our local police just let the thing blast. The burglars theory is interesting...would have never thought.

Interesting point. Where I am in Canada, the police usually have the radar on constant on. A few use instant-on.

Another great way to detect police is to do with the fault in using encyrpted radio. hahaha Police radios may be secure but they are like a giant sign saying hey this exactly where every car and unit is. All it takes is a little technical knowledge.

Paul Fairchild Canada and Virginia are the same as in not allowing the use of detectors so they assume no one has them so they leave it on all the time.

K band is primarily used by blind spot detection systems in cars and automatic door openers and not many police officers actively use K band anymore. Very few areas do these days.

Could they have been using planes or helicopters? More than a few times, I've seen our State Patrol (WI) parked in the median not shooting anything.

VASCAR. Completely "undetectable" and virtually indefensible.

There is some truth to people online being less than honest, especially if they sell radar detectors and can't recommend the V1 since Valentine only sells them direct. The only alternative is to link to an Amazon listing where people can buy them for more than full retail and no warranty, but if you're a RD distributor, you can't sell the V1 so there's definitely an incentive to make it look bad or talk it down. Personally I love the V1 and happily recommend it, even if that means I don't make money. For me at least, integrity shouldn't be for sale. Now as for the V1, it does have a lot of great selling points including being the first to do arrows, an insanely good rampup, and developing an API for third party developers to add functionality to it. However, it is a bit dated at this point. Not just the display, but the performance as well. Test after test after test shows the same trend. The V1 is not the long range champion. It hasn't been for a while. The Redline held that crown. Range isn't everything, but when it comes to long range tests, the V1 is falling behind. The fact that Mike V is getting closer to retirement and so development seems to be slowing isn't doing them any favors. They have a few patents for things under development, new features, a new hardware platform, etc., but it's taking YEARS for that to come to fruition. This runs counter to other manufacturers who consistently release new products and new firmware updates. When Valentine release a new detector, we'll test that and see how it does. It has a lot to offer in its current form, but when it comes to long range, the V1 is not the leader.

It's a myth. I have driven all throughout the state for years and not once gotten a real X hit. Always another car, door sensor, or traffic monitoring sensor. Real hits are Ka every single time, I don't think I've ever even gotten a real K. Maybe if you are way the hell out in the middle of nowhere you might find someone with an X radar, but I doubt it.

How would it see the laser gun if you physically blocked its view?

A plain RADAR detector doesn't detect LASER. A combo detector can pick up laser spilling past the csrs ahead of you, but if the cop is just shooting at you? You're screwed when the detector goes off.

Yeah I get lots of false Kband alerts but the problem is you can never be too sure. If anything there's an incentive for cops to use K band because of cloud of K band everywhere from other cars and sources.
