Why do foreigners raise children in China? 

If you want to save your next generation, raise them outside Western countries.

I'm gonna be blunt, but sending your child to international school and expecting them to learn Chinese at a high level is extremely unrealistic. I've met so many kids that went to international schools in China who have lived their entire lives in China, and almost all of them spoke Chinese poorly or couldn't speak at all. When one of the hardest languages to learn is treated as a few hours per week foreign language class, it's no wonder none of the kids could speak it natively despite living there their entire lives. One of the biggest advantages of a Chinese education is its ability to hammer in good study habits early on (forces the child to learn how to study and to dedicate time towards studying) and its ability to allow a child to become native in Chinese, which is an invaluable asset. You can't become natively proficient at a language if you don't see it all the time. There's a reason why you don't see any immigrant children in the US struggling with English past the first few months of school. Having that language environment is absolutely huge when it comes to language proficiency. Choosing an international school for highschool to circumvent the gaokao is a legitimate decision, but to not send your child to a Chinese elementary/middle school when they're young and the stakes are low is squandering their environment and doing them a disservice. Not trying to parent other people's kids, but that's just my two cents.

I was in Xining about 11 years ago when I had to stay there for a few days when the airline lost my luggage. I was on my way out to the middle of Qinghai province to help set up a helicopter base for my employer. Best 羊肉串 I've ever had and I've traveled all over this country, and Mongolia proper. With exception of living in war torn country, living in US is a nightmare.

Public school in the west is just like play schools compared to Chinese schools. The amount of education you learn or absorbed is very little compared to China. I am not sure if the private school is the same thou.

Thank you Miguel for making this video! I really enjoy the deep insight of your guests regarding raising children in China. Ultimately, it is always based on parents upbringing and personal beliefs. I believe overall the Asian education systems ( Chinese, Korean or Japanese etc) focus early childhood education on Strong Tough Academic. It is not unique to China. This is based on the history of East Asia. I live in Canada for almost 50 years and started my education since grade 6 onwards. I am a retired College professor, so I have a very different perspective regarding education. With the shift of Global Order and focus on technology. The far east education system may give a slight edge. One of the solutions is the International Baccalaureate IB program which might offer students a better alternative. My two children completed IB, they speak multiple languages and are now medical doctor working in UK.

Most of these foreigners are worried to send their kids to local Chineseschools, which I understand, but I think it's at least very useful to do that at early ages, like kindergarten, primary school and even junior high school, and at the same time attend online international program(it's super easy compare to the Chinese level anyway.)

I would only advice people to look into the trend and trajectory of China's education systems. The Chinese are gaining in ranking for top universities/institutions. Many people tend to think that the Chinese education system places too much workload to the kids but here is what I think might help to make it a little more understandable . Chinese tend to believe in striving while young and enjoying life while old, Where as the western people tend to believe that enjoying life while young and strive while older. Another thing is as a foreigner no matter where you are at you will be looked at and treated differently because of curiosity of the natives and some will view that as offensive but true offensive things are being attacked and being told to go back where you came from which I would find it hard to believe that the Chinese people will do to foreigners unlike from the west where you see that much much more often.

I'm so jealous, I want to move back to China now 🦃 My DNA is 100 East Asian and I love Asia!

A lot of young indians who are born in Hong Kong find it very difficult to move and live in their ancestral homeland of india. These young indians eventually choose to permanently settle down in HK.

great video. now I am 51 years and my Chinese girlfriend is 50 so we will not have children, but we have from past marriage. and my son and her son are over 20 years old and my daughter is 13 so i guess it's too late. but in Denmark it is normal for everyone to go to public school. so if I have children I would also like them to go to a Chinese school. but yes, an international school would also be good if you can afford it. then they would also learn from other countries. it is always a dilemma what to choose. you can also get a private school here in Denmark. but then you also have to pay for it. and yes, the education is also much better. one of the things that Denmark is also doing up. and school time here has also become longer, just like in China. but it seems like China takes good care of the children there. what about getting older in china. I would like to hear more about that. it would be a good idea for the next video. since children are probably over for me. unless we take in some foster children. well you never know. haha. but anyway thanks for a great video

Language is the problem all over Germany, Austria, Italy, France is the same but as long China is safe I will love to move there.

China public school is different than what you think as western countries. These education level is high standard and all the teacher are very serious about their obligation as well.

As a native Chinese who raised in diffrent provinces in China and been studying and living overseas in Germany and Australia for almost ten years, I support all these thoughts and opinions raised by these RU-vidrs in this video. First thing is discrimination. I was born in Anhui province and raised there for my first 13 years then moved to Zhejiang province. In my schools and social life in Zhejiang, even as a native Chinese, I was discriminated because people's stereotype towards Anhui, many of these stereotypes are usually not positive. I still remeber clearly the first discrimination happened to me was my first deskmate, who is an extremely smart, deligient and beautiful girl. I was very naughty at the age of 13 and it was also my first semester in my junior high school in Zhejiang, I annoyed my deskmate everyday and she was very offensive to me and said fxxxx off to your own province. That sentense caved on my mind 4ever. But one year later, she became my best friend, even now. In our school life, she invited me to her home play games when she was alone at weekend. Overall speaking, 80% people around me in Zhejiang actually treated me fair, especially most my teachers loved me very much and gave enough attention to my education and growing. (Maybe because I am actually a charming person and most welcome everywhere no matter in my home country or western countries). As far as I concern, human beings still have the territorial sense as most wild animals have, I think that is the origin of most discrimination. Second thing is education. No one can deny that China has one of the most intensive and hard courses in the world. Most people were growing in such a heavy-work education system for better life. Because there is one of the most important examinations in China called Gaokao, which is a very hard, multi-subjects academic examination in most students'18 or 19 years old, it is a passport for most Chinese student to change their lives for themselves even for their family. Because Gaokao can be deemed as one of the most fair exams in the world. It gives a great opportunty to most poor and ordinary families to compete with students with rich and strong background. Therefore, China is allowed to gain countless talents to contributer for this country. Last but not least, I would say China is one of the most safe countries in this world (I dont think there are many safe countries in this world hehe). Survive or we say safety is above everything one is going to develop.

Of course, I think it would be a good experience for them to raise their children abroad as well as in China.

In the USA, wholesome traditional families are rare, and the family judicial law system is elusive, and misunderstood by most American fathers. For starters the American fathers are associated more accurately as sperm donors. An American woman and especially if she becomes a mother, by default she can disconnect the father from his kids permanently if the mother so chooses. In fact the American system incentivize women to be single mothers for variety of reasons and social benefits. Marriage in America for men is a trap, because there is no fault divorce law, that means the woman can take the kids and go as far, and anywhere she wants in the states. For a father in the USA by design from the judicial system, required to have a lot of money just to keep up in contact and get only visitations with his kids. FATHERS IN THE AMERICA HAVE NO PARENTAL RIGHTS. Even if he achieves 50-50 custody, the mother by default get the primary residency with the children, which obligate the guy to pay child support, and that’s the bottom line. I haven’t seen my kids for the last eight years and maybe I might see them after they turn 18, I’m still in the courts but the game is lost already for the kids and me, father of two.

Very little time spent on the actual discrimination part. I am British and I grew up in a lovely town with different cultures all around me and never really experienced this level of exposure to racial intolerance being legal and promoted by the government. I am seriously considering leaving my wife and child (who is 4) because my wife doesn't agree that we should be poor and have multiculural society, she would rather be rich with a father who is bullied on a daily basis at work for being a "foreigner" andlive in China.

not International School, When in Roma, do what rome do! if you really think of living in China and let ur kids suit into China, do what normal Chinese do, Public school is free and with the highest standard and best teachers than private school, more homework and study never means bad, unless you want your kids be like a homeless without brain and hanging out every day then...

What I get is that China is a very safe place. Which is congruent with what many other Ex-Pats say about China. As for language. Well efforts must be made to learn the language. Live somewhere long enough you will pick up the language, with personal effort put in. Children pick up things fast, especially when really young. As for mixed kids. Here in the US mixed kids are noticed. Especially mixed black and Asian kids.

i moved out of jersey english channel islands have lived in far east since 1990 furthering my career as a very successful broadcast systems consultant for star tv and other large tv broadcasters and belt and road initiative in teh far east that had opportunity that natoland does not have due to its destructive red tape, I am now settled in thailand have three children born in far east and all now have masters degrees from european universities, far east education is THE BEST !

The Chinese are really tough. And it shows. They've come out of a third-world country to a leading economic house in one generation time. All this takes dedications. So I understand the guests' hesitation to send their kids to public schools where education is real...

To reverse the perspective, chinese youth living abroad face a similar problem of maintaining their own cultural ties as a result of natural cultural conformity imposed by the host country. All aspects ranging from customs and traditions, and especially language, become convoluted with those of the hosting country. This is hardly a new problem facing immigrants to western countries for decades, even centuries, who regarded the west as a better place of opportunity in the past. The difference today is that developing countries, especially China, now offer a viable alternative to life in the west that is rewarding on a large scale for foreigners financially and intellectually.

actually chinese government is looking forward to trail the steps of education development of western coutries, but the economic situation pull legs. As long as most of chinese people hit the bottomline of developed coutries, there will be a different story on chinese education. To be honest, western education is way better right now.

Absolutely the best international school $60K/year! that's why. but as an expat priced out of Shanghai now back to 4 days (BEST) in State public school system in United States. That's why? We still circle around China and all that money can be spent hiring more teachers, better PAY! Unbelievable. If you have a good job China is so much SAFER, more orderly, Cleaner, friendlier and the cities are changing for the better every month... literally unreal. I miss my days in Shanghai.

In a bright side, China is the number one in world economy, of course people have had very good infrastructure and living conditions now.

Chinese study so hard but when they graduate in their home country, they often can't even find a suitable job that pays enough. They can't afford to buy property, cost of living is high and their degrees hold no value outside China.

the importance for children is to learn about the history and the development of the far east and its emperors and philosophers of over 4000 years compared to the zero time of usa or biased 2000 years of europe who's anal education system ignores teh far east

it's cheap here in China, u can easily afford education, etc. for kids. but they have miserable future here (horrible work culture especially)

The S. African woman is not exactly happy to be there, perhaps she is more interested in her own country because she finds it necessary to go back to S. Africa twice every year! If a pair of shoes doesn't fit, why wear it every day?

Any country where the government is strong enough to control any aspect of your life, even how many children you have to have, those countries are good for nothing. The best educational system is parents, education should come from parents to learn what is right and what is wrong. That said, what parents should look out for for their children are skills, new language, math, geography, computers, stock exchange, entrepreneurship, etc.

Move back to South Africa for education instead of in China😂? I’m in the USA and I will tell you the education before college here sucks. The results are also mediocre and this is not according to me but according to PISA scores.

In the past, I would have never thought in a million years that any Westerner would want to live, let alone raise their family in China. Now I am thinking about retiring in the safety and friendliness of China.

If Chinese education system is poorer than other countries, how the Chinese graduates brought the country up to today’s national achievement?! There is no better system, only which is more suitable for themselves.

I used to live in VN since birth until I was 12 and moved to America 🐁 When I just got to America I thought how people were were very weird, strange, different, and crazy to me After awhile I adjusted to the life in the West and now I am much older I have to say that Asia is a lot safer. People are nicer, innocent, pure, and more harmless As a girl...... You can actually walk on the street at night and you will be safe ~99%+ of the time! I never felt I was not safe in Asia! In the West, I always felt that there are insanity near me all the time like someone can harm me out of nowhere! If I don't lock my door, I'm afraid sleeping at night someone can come in and kill me while I'm sleep in America. In VN it was safer, I always felt safe 90%+ of the time...... The most serious crime that I heard in Asia 12 years living there was I think some crazy girls raped a guy or something like that that's it. That's what I remember if I don't remember incorrectly
