“On Earth, gravity determines how the flame burns. All the hot gases in the flame are much hotter (and less dense) than the surrounding air, so they move upward toward lower pressure. This is why fire typically spreads upward, and it's also why flames are always "pointed" at the top.” -Google, the art of knowledge

@evilbull8995
@evilbull8995 3 года назад
Key Takeaways: 1.) Just as how fire always goes up and water goes down, *you have a certain gravitational pull that forces you in a specific direction.* Don't get caught up in a particular simple solution or some "magic pill", allow yourself to move in that direction. 2.) *But keep in mind that if your happiness is rooted in you reaching a singular point, then you will never be happy.* Once you reach that point, you'll always find something "better" that you'll have to reach towards in order to be "happy". Focus on making progress in the general direction that drives yourself 3.) On that same point: *"Don't attach yourself to a fantasy, move in the direction".* Take little steps towards a very general goal, don't focus on a specific point because you'll never actually improve. 4.) *Don't make a "plan" for how you'll be happy.* Dr. K brings up the Planning Fallacy, which is the idea that the plans you make before you actually start your journey are the worst plans possible because you won't know how the journey will go. As said before, move in that general direction that you have a gravitational pull towards, and don't get caught up on specific checkpoints along the way. 5.) *When you think you have the "perfect" answer for something, life will not hesitate to bitch-slap you.* Going back to point 4, don't get too hung up on specific checkpoints or specific "perfect answers", because life will always find a way to jebait you. "If you're attached to a particular thing that is /the/ answer to all of your problems, chances are it's not the answer to all your problems". Don't be afraid to settle for second best, as it is probably better than what you originally came up with. Also, if you have trouble finding that gravitational pull that drives you, I highly recommend this video from CGP Grey about how to use "Themes" to help you move in the direction you want to move towards. It's only 6 minutes, but it's probably been one of the best videos I've seen all of 2020: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NVGuFdX5guE.html

As dumb as it sounds, I'm such a huge procrastinator that I am literally starting to not give a shit about consequences, and just "take it" if aspects of my life become miserable of it. This gravitational pull towards becoming happy doesn't work on me. I'd LIKE to live a happier life, but I don't bother anymore because I think of where I might end up decades down the line, think about my current circumstances and just give up.

I had this exact issue in High School / start of uni, after sabotaging myself with procrastination for years the part of my brain that gave a shit about consequences just shut off. I became super depressed / apathetic, it was really hard to get out of it but I (partially) did. If you haven't already tried getting therapy, it could work for you. Also I think Dr K has some videos on the huge wall that we feel when we see where we might be in some years vs our current circumstances. Wish you the best

I have really bad maladaptive daydreaming, where I will lose hours each day thinking up elaborate stories or songs/music videos, and when the daydream is over I feel sad because I don't know how to materialize any of the ideas. This also interferes a lot with my work. Something I've been trying to do recently that helps is kinda what Dr. K was saying->go in the general direction of my goal. So that means stuff like, writing lyrics, composing portions of a song, etc. I may in my head think up a whole album in a couple of hours, but if I get caught up in the idea of trying to materialize ALL of that, I feel overwhelmed and sad and this process of "giving up" kinda makes me slip back into my daydream and then I get nothing done. So I've learned that, even if I come up with one song or part of it in a few months, that's okay. And it may not sound how I wanted it to, but if I continue just putting stuff out there, even shitty stuff, I think I will get to a place where I eventually want to be. There is no way to put out perfection from the beginning. I feel like this may help with your situation. Your first few or even several steps may not seem like they will take you to the place where you eventually want to be, but at some point you've gotta start somewhere, and try to hold onto the hope that you will get to a good place eventually but without losing yourself in that hope or fantasy.

"Get the silver medal, or even the bronze." Yep. I've heard this idea phrased differently as "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." Too demotivated to go to the gym? Ok just maybe walk on the spot while watching one of Dr K's longass interviews. Too busy to pick out the perfect health insurance plan? Hell with it - just ask what the most popular one is and get that; it's better than being uninsured for one more day (never know when something might happen to you). Too perfectionist to ever get into investing your life savings? Meh, just toss the lot into a few ETFs, bonds and safe low-fee instruments, perfectionism be damned. Anything worth doing is worth doing halfassedly. Halfassedly-done is better than perfectly undone.

Life is like that in a way. The only thing that makes you get out of bed is yourself so maybe you care about yourself and thats why you choose to wake up and do the routine. Don't strive for motivation because it will end at some point. What you need is to try and see the big picture yet focus on tiny details that make your life a bit more pleasant. Think of the cold morning wind or the flickering lights at night. There's always something beautiful in every day life even if you may not see it right now. Edit:Not an expert, I'm just saying random stuff that I've been thinking about in this year of quarantine.

It's okay to do little progress. You don't need to start with motivation in mind. I have similar issues, cause my mental health is so fucked. Sometimes small progress every day is better than no progress. Maybe clean your apartment one day, cook a recipe by a book for a day, send a relative a card and go to a post office or like me start working out at the gym. Anything that would make you feel proud of yourself afterwards. I've been so unstable for the last months, I haven't managed to clean up my apartment and it's an absolute mess. You're helping people in a place that's so smart and reaches so many people and it's so unconventional. You've helped out a couple of people I look up to and helped them in a way I never ever could as a singular, not-as-intelligent 'friend'. So thanks, Dr. K. You're actually The Man.

three things I thought of while watching 1) there is an expectation for perfection at a young age. Many kids (middle schools/high schoolers) are expected to make important decisions early on and I remember mostly being afraid of embarrassing myself. A lot of the things I was insecure abt took me a while to get over because the fear of being "cringe" is so real. We look at the ppl doing things in ASB, sports, etc. and make fun of them because they are putting themselves out there and making mistakes, but as he said, no one is perfect in the beginning. Kids are fkn cruel and it limits us well into adulthood. 2) there is a centralization of thoughts and beliefs. This kind of goes hand-in-hand w/ #1. Schooling system, the internet, western culture, all leads us to think in similar ways and defines what normal is and what expectations are. like talking to strangers is weird, putting yourself out there is cringe, how there is a desired way of life, desired attributes that people want when looking for a relationship etc. But it really shouldn't be like that. Fk everyone. Ik how much its hard to internalize that. We want to be accepted, we want a relationship, we want our parents to accept us, but in reality, it limits us. By redefining what existence means and how one should approach life, the possibilities are endless. As much as ppl say, get a six figure job, get married, live in the suburbs, raise a family, etc. as the only acceptable way of life, ignore it, tune it out, stand your ground, do your own thing. Its def an option and nothing bad, but by only allowing one definition of a successful life, you are limiting what "success" means. Redefine what success means, make a bucket list, and chase that. 3) There is a higher societal value on the end goal and not the journey. Fk the end goal. The success is in the journey. There should more value, more reward, more emphasis on achieving happiness through the journey. Itll make your attitude toward life a whole lot better. You did one push up today? hell ya!! take pride in that. And take pride in failure. It shows effort. Value failure more than apathy and your approach to everything will dramatically change.

Thanks for sharing thoughts, zeffery. I wish to share mine in response: 1. I would say that kids are cocky just to show themselves worthy to get laid faster than the others. If you care about how prodigies are created - they have a really strongest emotional support possible amongst the human beings. (sometimes it's abusive, but still it helps them to move forward and not just to pretend, no wishful thinking). And it's always super weird that kids has to choose anything, since they basically don't know shit and nobody teaches them (do teachers know the shit about the world?). After University everybody from my grad year were looking at each other's jobs. I remember even making fun of some the best students, that went to low profile job. 2. It's hard to be an individual. But when you become one it's viable to understand the pleasures of conformity and importance of trends also. Being not cared about opinion of other people is one part - how about to be cared about people, their opinions and listen not just yourself. 3. I can kinda disagree on both with who tells that only goal is important and success, and with who tells that journey is important. I can say both in my experience and opinion are irrelevant. You just can't see the consequences of your actions, but if you could (some sort of time travel into the future) you would be choosing your options of the better future, that are actually available to you, no matter what you have to do for it. You can spent years by screwing around with your wishes, journey vs goal, but this perspective doesn't really makes it perfect for anyone. While being joyful in your journey you can start asking yourself, if that it's right or not, maybe you can do more, or you just don't wanna meaningless activities in your life, and contest something in this life. The same for goal-oriented attitude. IMHO, our minds are screwed up with mental constructs like "wishes", and they're really fluid and you never can't rely on them. It's not secures your life for you. Either you act, either you don't.

Neither sports or friends are fun anymore.I've been reflecting on this situation for about 6 years now, and I came to the conclusion that not everybody has their gap in which they fit. I've been shown for a second time now that I'm too stirred up mentally to be in a relationship or a place I belong to. There's seriously nothing to wake up for. For a long time I didn't comprehend the meaning of 'hell is on earth' but now, after years of the mental abuse I and external sources caused I finally understand that there's no need for fire or torture-demons when all the necessary tools are inside you already. For example, if you want to be lose weight, try to find exercises/sports that are fun for you, that you "are pulled to" (as Dr. K would say). I struggled trying to become a runner for years until i realized i hate running. Picked up cycling and fell in love immediately. It's one of the things in my life that "pulls" me out of bed in the morning.

This reminds me of what I’ve been telling my girlfriend. Whenever she’s not where she wants to be physically she gets upset that she’s not there even though she’s actively working towards it. I tell her what’s important is that she’s working towards it, eventually you’ll get there. And that happiness shouldnt be attached to having your body look a specific way because with what she’s doing today she’ll eventually get there.

I do it because it's hard and it forces me to change day-by-day and get better. I do it for the spiritual enlightenment and so that after I die and I'm faced with everything I know that I fought and struggled the entire time without ever giving up while doing my best. I've fallen down many times and thought I should just give up cause it would be so much easier. This is part of it, push through the fear and the doubt, keep fighting and you will continue to grow slowly but surely.

The only way I was able to truly understand that “happiness comes from within” is by doing things that improve myself. It doesn’t matter what I do or how much I do, but as long as it makes me better then it is worth doing. If my room is dirty, then it is worth cleaning. If I have a bunch of late school work, it is still worth doing. Even if I know there is no point, if it makes me better then there IS a point. Another key thing is that you don’t have ANY control over your outcomes. I always think to myself: “There’s always a chance that I could die tomorrow”. It doesn’t matter how well you did on the test if you could theoretically just die the next day. Forget the outcome. Focus on the things that you do have control over which are your actions and perceptions.

Dr. K, love the content, just a quick question (to you or anyone)--I get that moving toward the direction of your goal is better than psyching yourself out with over-romanticizing life once you achieve it and not taking action anyway, but how does planning come into play then? I'm frustrated because I want to get better at, say, study skills. However, there's no concrete progression (like there is in video games) with explicit rewards for it. So when I do make progress, I feel like I'm 1.) not tending to recognize/reward myself properly, but more importantly 2.) tend to regress after the novelty is over and real habitual change doesn't occur. I guess the essence of my question is how do you balance this advice (take any action) with the tendency to be complacent? Thanks a ton for what you do!

I mean, how do you know if you're getting better or worse without goals? Usain Bolt isn't going to win a race if he runs in circles rather than to the finish line. Focusing exclusively on goals is bad, but I know from experience that just trying to focus on 'self-help' or 'self-improvement' doesn't get you anywhere.
@ziquaftynny9285
@ziquaftynny9285 3 года назад
I really feel like nonchalant non-habitual goals aren't enough. It is better to set a medium term (3 months) goal of creating a habit to as large of a degree that one can handle. Example) If exercising 3 times a week for 30 minutes is too hard then simply do it for 10 minutes 3 times a week. And make your goal to turn that into a habit, putting all your energy into it for three months. The idea is that after those three months you can set another goal or expand your current one.

I lived with chronic pain for 17 years and tried to be in the societal mindset to always be going and doing so I fought so hard against what my body was telling me, and when it couldn't do it I was hard on myself and frustrated. After trying to drag myself around in this horrible cycle and feeling sorry for myself long enough I reached 2 conclusions. One I crave balance and two I'm willing to do anything to achieve change. I surrendered to what my body needed and stopped trying to listen to all the "should do this and that" in my head and tried instead to just exist in a guilt free way and tried different changes to be healthier. My pain ended up going away and now I love the mundane because I feel joyous so doing them is joyous too. It's not the doing that brings me joy, it's the joy that shows me the joy in doing the mundane. Even washing dishes by hand and seeing the bubbles on the wet knife as the dirt gets rubbed off to a shiny beautiful version of itself - it's an experience! A big thing I did to reach this inner balance was to practice unitasking and living in the now, not the yesterday or tomorrow. Yesterday and tomorrow is none of my buisness. ^^

Dr.K you couldn't be more right. I was stressed about our finances after having our first kid. We just seemed to be going further into debt month after month. All the planning didn't help. It wasn't until we just became happy with moving in the right direction even if it was small that we finally started making progress. What's incredible is with most things whether it be finances, fitness, relationships, hobbies if you start with little steps in the right direction it can snowball into huge progress down the line.

Gravity is an interesting way to explain what pulls us to do things. Though it’s a little misleading because when you think of gravity, you think of simply letting go of something, and seeing it drop. With our life goals, however, it’s not so much a matter of letting go of something as much as it is climbing upwards toward something. I suppose that gravity works better as our desires. And action is the resistance that we must overcome. Hm. Something like that.
