To be honest the most irritating part is how people started flocking to Jeffrey Star. As if he is the ‘only’ make up influencer that gives honest reviews. It’s like people are ignoring smaller creators that are honest and also creators of color (in general). I feel like people forget that his actions have a direct impact on people.

I have no comment of the actual make up controversies, but as a native Bostonian I can confidently say that veeeerrrrrrrrrrryy few of us still have accents as strong as Mikayla puts on in her videos. Most of us did as kids tho and we worked to cover parts or all of it up for jobs that judged us based on how we spoke (like Mikayla) or like me, went to college out of state and learned really fast to hide the accent to avoid annoying people asking me to perform stupid sentences 🤬 All in all I think criticizing someone’s performative speech while they are performing on an app is absurd LOL

My only problem was using false lashes while promoting a mascara. Commercials on tv disclose that the model is wearing false lashes, yes in very small print, but it’s there.

Theres also a tik tok from Mikayla when Roe v. Wade was overturned where she said she was going to donate the money she made from her Glamlite palette sales to charities that help with abortions. She never said she did and doesnt answer when people ask. Not saying she conned people but I would like to see the donation or an explanation on why she cant donate yet. Maybe her Glamlite sales havent been finalized yet as theres still stock available but we cant know that unless she tells us. To be honest, I never watch beauty on tik tok so I dont care for her but I hate that her drama has brought up this common stereotype that the whole beauty community on social media is a snake pit where honesty goes to die. Theres so many incredible and honest beauty content creators out there. All in all, shes not as horrible as Jeffree Star but she did cement herself into my brain as someone who I cant trust when it comes to products she reviews.

I think the biggest problem is the dishonesty. She built her brand on a honest persona, in a time that people were losing their jobs and being forced to stay home. Afterwards, more people were losing their jobs and she is being dishonest with her likes and dislikes, without showing something that could tell someone this is a commercial. She is no better than a swindler. It is the lowest form of swindling, but it is swindling people out of their money, so then she can get a paycheck from other brands.

No dog in this fight, but I will say the accent thing makes sense. She can let herself talk as she wants within the character of her videos and that be actually her as much as the cultured voice she might use in public. I've heard folks on RU-vid from over in the UK talk about having to learn how to speak for jobs and when they're on their own, they can sound more natural. Honest, I don't get why people fail to see that anybody on any of these platforms in a position like this girl is presenting a character. Now it maybe very very close to what they really are, but it's thought about.

I think there was another one that wasn’t mentioned. Another tiktoker brought up a video of another TikTok of a girl saying I think “when your ex is dating someone successful”? The guy that reposted the TikTok mentioned that the ex in the video was Mikayla’s current boyfriend and the guy making the TikTok basically said “oh, I wonder if there’s tea there”. Mind you, the ex girlfriend just made a funny quick video. Said nothing bad about Mikayla, she was never even named, but Mikayla still brought up the fact that the ex girlfriend and Mikaylas current boyfriend met in rehab and that she was an addict which was unnecessary imo, the ex girlfriend didn’t do anything wrong in that senecio and Mikayla should’ve never responded to something so minuscule

the accent matters because it adds and aids into the deception of mikayla's character, it also proves that she is a dishonest person and beauty influencer that should not be trusted, we look to these gurus and influencers for their "honest" reviews and opinions and it's a bigger issue all around when mikayla tries to pass herself as "an honest person" and influencer but then goes and lies about an accent and her reviews, like if she can fake an accent, she can fake her reviews, the thing is we have been trying to combat false advertising for SOOOO long so when the methods we've used to do that (influencers/peer reviews) is now infiltrated by big corp money, it just puts more money and power into the fact that DECEPTION WORKS AND SELLS, and becomes a way bigger issue/problem for the masses, yes the accent is not that deep, but then again it is actually that deep if you look at the bigger picture of how this all ties together, TLDR; I would rather put my money and views towards influencers and companies that disclaim and are actually honest

As someone who grew up in Rhode Island with a strong accent very similar to mikaylas I got made fun of so badly once I started interacting with people outside of my little RI bubble. It got to me so much that I eventually retrained myself to speak without it and it only slips out when I’m incredibly relaxed or very angry. Her forcing herself to speak without it but reverting back to it when she realized it was ok and accepted is totally plausible.

Everything with her has been a bit crazy lately, I’m kind of confused how I should feel about her and all the drama surrounding her. And having watched Mikayla for awhile she seemed really down to earth and then recently she just seemed to get really snobby and became unenjoyable to watch. I think that the issue of nondisclosure is a problem - with Mikayla and with other influencers. I thought it was an issue before this and will after people have stopped talking about it. I have never been a Mikayla viewer. I only consumed her content rarely because her personality just didn't catch me, so I never watched a ton of her content or wanted to follow her. If there's one thing I won't forgive her for (joking) it's allowing JS to claw his way out of Wyoming and back into semi-relevancy. A lot of the things people are calling out - like the accent - I think are being nitpicky or trying to find an issue. There are a lot of people who have accents who trained themselves out of it because of insecurity, or whatever. There are so many possible reasons why her public facing "accent" may have changed and it's literally a non-issue I think people are trying to just find something in.

I think most of these drama moments don't actually matter, I think in discussing her popularity and now impending downfall we have to discuss who the people who follow and consume her content actually are. Mikayla became popular because she did not fall into the conventional beauty standards, I remember her showing up on my page and she was a bigger girl with bad acne, small lips, big nose, thin eyebrows, all of which were and are still not part of the beauty standard. A large majority of her early audience was build on that, it was build on her not being conventionally attractive (not being attractive is FINE). Her audience was originally built by people who related to some aspects of her feautures, mainly the acne and small lips (i remember vividly people commenting how relieved they were to find a creator with small lips like them). As her platform grew and she grew as well the people who followed her were people who liked 2016-esque dramatic eye makeup. So who are her audience so far? the same people who had the same non conventional features as her and the bold eye fans. Those are people who made up her core audience, the people who watched her content and helped support her products but what happened was she changed. As someone who was known for her acne early on her no longer having it caused people to look for others who did. Obviously good for her but the reality is people who watched were no longer as interested so others took place. These others are people who did not relate to her but maybe liked her personality. They are likely the ones who just stopped watching one drama came, or they were just there for the 'hype'. Most large platforms have that, the core audience who truly liked the creator and related in some way, and as the creator grows, more superficial people stay attached. In addition to all of that, she stopped interacting with her fans as much and it seems like almost everything she says is a lie, even before the lashes situation she was very bad with her reviews. I remember watching a video of hers maybe +2 years ago about red lipsticks, she seemed very authentic, gave her honest opinion, and had great fan interactions but then the previously mentioned changed happen. My personal opinion? She is extrememly out of touch, influencers lying has been a problem in the past and I simply don't watch content related to product reviews, espeically after one use, i just read the reviews on actual websites. I blocked her long before any of these dramas only because her accent overstimulated the fuck out of her and her videos seemed like a cash grab and an attempt to push products down our throat and I hate people telling me what to do. Also, everyhting went down after her filler got the engored butthole treatment soooo. I hate jeffree star and he never misses an opportunity to attack a woman, from jackie aina to mikayla to hailey beiber, as soon as he gets involved shit turned to straight up mysogyny real quick. The people who support him are the same one's who only really follow people for the hype, very bland, boring, stupid people so it isn't actually too surprising.

Honestly, I think most people wanna hate on her and try to blow her life up because they are jealous of her success. I said what I said 🤷🏻‍♀️ also thanks for this. The thing with the ads is, these BRANDS will write in the contracts specific things they want you to say/do… up to and including some kinda sketchy workarounds to make their product seem better than it is. I know this because I have had to do it. Sometimes they even wait to send these extra little additions to the content outline after you have already signed a contract. And if you don’t do it, you don’t get paid. Being a content creator is actually a lot of work, and a lot of dealing with brands who want you to work for free, so whether you get to Mikayla’s level or not and actually are getting paid, have bills to pay, then maybe you upgrade your house and vehicle and whatever else, and get into a position where you NEED to get paid even more, then saying no to these brands isn’t necessarily an option. The mob mentality of hating on any influencer/celebrity etc to the point where everyone is overanalyzing and hating on every move that person makes, cyber bullying/ stalking that leads to real life bullying/stalking and even doxxing, is super disgusting and all too common now. On one hand I do side eye everyone who went running back to Jeffree Starr because of lashgate, the backlash she got for false advertising and improper, non-explicit posting of promoted products was deserved. She doesn’t properly tag her sponsored posts (which is illegal mind you) and then lies within said posts about the quality of the items. Horrible false advertising and that really needs to be fixed. It’s kind of sickening because even I at some point had seen her as reliable to get honest reviews from, but it just showed me in the end, money is what speaks the loudest. To add onto this, I think that the h whole honesty thing is why people have been talking about the validity of her accent, because once one thing is proven false, it just makes everything else about someone feel fake as well.

Theres a rampant misogyny problem within the makeup community. Creators like Jacklyn Hill have been cancelled and run through the mud for things that people like jeffree star were excused for (everyone seems to forget that jeffrees brand and jacklyns had the exact same launch problems, and yet jeffree got away with it but jacklyn is still mocked for it to this day..?) The recent stuff with mikayla is just more evidence for the pile. At the end of the day, no matter what community its in, female creators will always be punished for behavior that their male peers get away with.
