Have you ever wondered why does my neck hurt all the time? If so, you wouldn't be the first.
According to numerous studies, up to 70-75% of the population will experience neck pain some time in their lives and it continues to be a growing concern due to our accessive use of computers and mobile devices.
While most neck pain goes away, those who experience ongoing (or chronic) pain can become easily frustrated. In this video, I'm sharing one of the reasons why you might be having pain in your neck to help you begin to become more aware of how you can avoid this in the future.

If you put your head forward, doesn't that create the forward neck posture and hence pain? Should it not be 'back and up'? Great Channel BTW.

Awesome video. Do you have any advice on pillows? I so much more aware now in the day, I just can’t get it right at night lately.

Thanks for your comment Sweetest Vegan! I don't yet have any videos made on pillows, BUT I have lots of thoughts so I have added this topic to my queue of videos 'to be made' and will be sure to record something for you very soon! Until then, I might suggest thinking about what pillows you've ever slept on (ever!) that were comfortable. Were they a pillow at your grandparents house? A pillow on the couch that is considered more 'decorative' than functional? What is your current pillow like that you don't care for? Too soft? Too lumpy? etc. When we're trying to get it 'right', it's helpful to look back and think about things we do like vs. don't like so we can begin to get closer to what will work best for us now. (And then revisit often, because-like all things!-our bodies change.)

This didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me as I feel like if anything I’m moving my head forward and then down, which is putting weight onto my neck and spine, probably because of phones etc. So I almost feel like I need to work on doing more back and down 😅

Thanks for your comment! *Haha* I know what you mean 😂 the language can definitely be confusing! In fact, if images help you understand better, I have a great visual I’d be happy to email you if you want to send me a quick note to morgan@atcenterstudio.com (be sure to put “Request for Photo of Head Forward and Up’ in the subject line for me.) 😄 For now though, to try and better understand, you can try this quick exercise at home. Place your middle finger on your third eye (or the space between your two eyes, above your nose. Then bring your head forward and down to where you think it usually ends up when you’re on your phone, device, etc. and close your eyes. Sense where your hand is on your head. Slowly bring your head UP-to where you think your head would be sitting on top of your spine straight. Then drop your nose slightly so your chin is parallel to the floor. Notice how your hand came FORWARD then to do that last step! This is where we get the language/direction in the Alexander Technique of allowing your neck to free so that your ‘head moves FORWARD and UP’. I’ve also made a note to better describe this in a future video for you-so that will be coming in the near future as well. ☺️ Please make sure to ‘Subscribe’ so you don’t miss that!
