Fibafuse is awesome. I love how it lets mud bleed through it. It also never seems to wrinkle. It's flat, doesn't wrinkle, doesn't suck the moisture from the mud, and it's strong. Great stuff.

I use it on all the butt joints, still use paper on the flats and corners. My favorite part is it's forgiving if you accidentally sand into it, on uneven butt joints. Paper makes a mess, but this is easily repaired on a final coat.

I've used fibafuse a few times. As an home amateur I liked that it embedded really nice and I was confident that I used the right amount of mud since the excess squishes thru and hid the seams. I threw out my 2 inch roll, because my hands and forearms had that invisible stabbing feeling like you get with fiberglass. I learned to use gloves pretty quick, but threw them out with the roll too.

I've been using it for several years and recommend it to everyone. It is a bit pricey compared to a roll of paper...but, I feel it is worth every penny and the minor itchiness I have to deal with after...I really don't have a whole lot of itch after words...at least not enough to not want to use. Just have to be a little bit more careful about running your fingers across it too much. and it doesn't work on inside corners...cuts way too easy.

Thanks for the video. I like to stay away from paper tape in bathrooms if I can but hate using mesh tape in the corners, so I decided to try Fiba-fuse. One great thing, in addition to what you listed, is that I can use it in my banjo. However, for corners, not only does it not have a crease, but I have to be careful or my knife will tear it if I get too close to the corner.

The itching topic might be brand related. In Germany, the most common drywall brand is called Knauf and I used their glass fiber (not mesh) tape without gloves on a large DIY project on ceilings in my house. Never once noticed any itching. It looks and behaves otherwise identical to FibaFuse. The only word of caution I have from using it: it is very easy to miss while sanding and I actually sanded through it on one seam. Three years later, this is the only seam that cracked.

I used it to tape my house (DIYer) and it was nice all around. I never had problems with bubbles under the tape. It was super nice for the multiple layers that happened where the 12" coves matched up at the ceiling. I ran into the same itch problem. It also requires care in the corners to not cut the corner of the tape. The bazooka I used also required a bit of fiddling to get it to work well (my only experience with a bazooka). I wondered how a pro would deal with the itchy fingers & you answered it! :) I wish I knew there was 6" and 36" versions as that would have made the coves easier (for me) to smooth out & align.

I used to use vinyl mesh (like from a screen door) over some large repairs. I even bridged two pieces of drywall once when a pipe was proud of the studs. In Hawaii, we have things like ceiling joists 4 foot on center. Yeah, I know, what sort of insanity is that, but we don't have to content with snow loads. Had a couple place where the ceiling was cracked at a factory seam and had been "repaired" by others twice and still cracked. I would have added some blocking, but it would have require me to remove the metal roofing to get to it easily. Used the 6" Fibafuse and 5 years since, no cracks. It definitely has its place, but yes... itchy fingers.

I've been threatening for awhile that I'm going to start wearing gloves while using the fibeafuse but I never have; regardless I actually love the stuff. Much much stronger than paper and less prone to wrinkling. My method is usually to apply the same as ever, them coat over top and feather all of it back off. It'll leave exactly enough inside the fibres to bond nicely. You can't get the inside corner fibeafuse here so I'll usually tape all butts and tapers with fibeafuse and do inside corners with paper (CGC), outside corners with vinyl and trimtex glue, or flex tape (CGC midflex) for off-angle outside corners.

I use fibafuse for flats and butts, paper for corners. I've heard about guys taping corners with fibafuse, but I've never seen it. It doesn't make my fingers itch, but it tears up my arms if it touches them, so I wear long sleeves taping. I love fibafuse for patching as well because it's so much easier to cover than mesh.
@VC-Toronto

The newer version is better for corners, as the prior version had a "thin streak" down the middle to make it easier to sand, but was a real weak spot, and easily tore out with a knife when bedding it in. The newer version (same product number) does not have that "thin crease" area. A corner roller is advised though to get nice crisp inside corners. They make an HD version I'm looking forward to trying. I just love not having air bubbles to fix.

I started to use fibafuse exclusively since the beginning of this year. I did my factory and flats joints with FF before, but my internals with paper. Now that i figured a way/technique not to cut the FF in the corners i don't use paper tape anywhere anymore. Fibafuse gives me the flexibility to use hotmud over it the same day, and hot mud lets me finish coat that same day as well. It's really a time saving product without the compromises mesh tape brings with it. I do agree on the itchy fingers, underarms and neck (if you do ceilings)...

So I just finished taping my walls in my basement. I used 2 inch Fibafuse tape. I wore gloves and a long sleeve t-shirt to protect myself from the glass fibres that ALWAYS fall off. In fact, if you're working overhead, I'd wear a mask as well. Now, people would say thius is a pain in the ass, but I'm telling you this is a time-saver: you can finish your job faster, and use less drywall compound. Here's why: when paper is taped, ity gets swells a bit, and ends up being significantly thicker than wen using Fibafuse tape. NButt joints require the most mudding due to the geomtyery, and trying to make a hump look flat. The amount you have to feather out on each side is directly proportional to the height of the tape when set in. Fibafuse tape requires less m,u'd to set in, and is thinner (it's already thinner than paper, plus there's no swelling). I would venture to say that the total height is half of that of the tape. that means it should require half the width on either side of the tape to make it disappear. So I decided to put that to the test: I applie that tape and made sure there was only a very small amount of mud under it, as it embeds itself into the mud rather than being a layer between the musd under it and on top of it. When that dried, I used my 14" trowel, and appl;ied to both sides, wipe the middle, feather the edges, and left it at that. I've primed my wall, and I can't see a single joint. Flat joints require 2 coats, and that's just because of compind shrinkage when drying. But I don't ensure I have an air gap below my blade when applying the fort coat: I just give it a real quick sand before applying a very thin second coat. I'm staring at the flat joints as I'm typing this, and I'm very happy with it. So, since all taping is about hiding the tape. Isn't it better to use a thinner tape? After using this for a few years: Cons: 1) you need to be careful as it's fibreglass and no good in eye, lungs, or on skin. 2) corners aren't easy. You can't fold it before - it just bounces back 3) it can tear easily - also a pro. You just have to be careful with it. Pros: 1) Stronger than paper when wet. 2) you can embed it into the drywall compound, which paper can't do, making for a stronger tape-to-compound bond. 3) your butt joints are easy to get perfect. 4) you use less drywall compound. 5) your butt joints are ready 1 day sooner. The reason for flat joints requiring 2 coats is that drywall compound shrinks, and it's a problem with flat joints, but a positive for butt joints. You are my best source for all drywall issues, and I love how my jobs look after taking your courses (heheh!). I now use weldbond in all my quicksety mixes: I love how sticky it gets but is still very workable. I just taped a problematic inside corner in a stairwell using 20 minute quickset with 40% weldbond. It should set soon, and I'll be able to apply a coat using my corner trowel this afternoon. I should be ready to sand and prime tomorrow. :)

I have a love-hate relationship with FibaFuse. I've used it to tape a bunch of houses and for some reason it would fail on butt-joints beneath windows (and proper prep was always done before taping). Also being 2x as expensive as paper tape for same sized rolls made me stop using it. I couldn't justify the price for a product that would crack even with proper prep, especially at the price it was.

I think fibafuse is amazing for an amateur, like myself, doing flat and butt joints. You can actually see the tape is embedding, and getting saturated with mud, which I had trouble with using paper tape. I’ve found on corner joints however, because of a lack of a crease in the tape, I ended up kind of poking it into the corner with my putty knife. If the fibafuse became saturated before I poked it into the corner, the fibafuse would tear, which seems to defeats the purpose. Plot twist though, I ended up using paper tape for my corners, got a lot better at using paper tape, and now I’m having an existential crisis of sorts about the tape I should use going forward..

I like this product but a couple of times I have accidentally sanded through it. Using it on corners is a little more time consuming because it doesn't cease easily. Great videos! Hi from a fellow Vancouverite!

They are not cheap, but an inside corner roller will be your best friend. Cheapest one I bought about 6 months back was about $100 CDN. Nice crisp inside corners using regular Fibafuse. Looking to try the Max version next opportunity. (using a Delko banjo with "thin" sheetrock 90 hot mud to apply FF to the flats and inside corners)

Can confirm the sanding issue. Since it is so thin and embedded in the mud, it is easier to miss while sanding and obviously, once you have sanded through it, it is pointless.

I just started to use Fibafuse this week to try and pout an end to creaks in the ceiling after walking around in the attack. I don't like paper as I find it start to come away after 5-years and when I burry it on a ceiling, I find the lighting close to the ceiling makes the area where the tape is burred stand out. So, lets see how Fibratape holds up 🙂

Fiba tape all the way. But yes the number one issue is the itchiness. Seriously feels like many small fibreglass particles going into your fingers. When I touch it I make sure not to rub my hand over but sometimes you have to and you just need to use a disposal glove. Before fiba, I used a lot of mesh. The mesh gave me the most headaches out of any of the tapes, you would see it through all the time with the grid marks, and heaven forbid you accidentally touch or move the mesh too much or pieces would start coming off and it would ruin your finish and get into your mud. One last super cool part about the fiba, I tested it out once and sanded the fiba tape with my orbital sander and it ended up blending in and sanding down almost like the mud itself, what remained was the fiba tape in the joint which was really impressive. As for strength, I believe it’s the strongest. I had to repair a broken metal corner once near a closet, the top of the closet was basically ripped off from the corner and just moving front and back like a hinge, and the customer wanted it repaired quick and cheap, i used a couple small pieces of fiba tape and 5min mud and after I was done it was as solid as concrete.

I have seen this video as well as your bath ceiling...I want to try it...but there wasn't a mention of using primer first over paper being missing in large areas. I have a huge wall of plaster with missing paper in other areas. Love your videos by the way.

Wonder if the itchiness would disappear if the Fibafuse roll is submerged in drywall mud and pulled out of the drywall dispencer for application?

I have a sensitivity to formaldehyde so fibafuse and even mesh tape are a problem. The more you are exposed to it the more sensitive you become. Years ago itching around fiberglass i thought it was the glass fibers, but it turns out its the resin. You'll know when you have a problem when newspaper or permanent press clothing starts to bother you.

We used to use this stuff on boats in NZ, back in 2006 with epoxy or polyester resin. I think it had been around longer than that as well. So I guess gib stoppers didn’t know about it until a few years later.

Do you have any tips to remove excess mud on a wall. My house. I bought it with textured walls from a grooved trowel. I think they removed wall paper and instead of skimming they loaded up the wall with at least a quarter inch of mud.

I got tired of retaping joints in a modular home with paper tape. The cracks would always come back. Started using fibafuse and have yet to have a crack come back in a joint or corner taped with it.

I used 2" FibaFuse to tape butt joints, factory joints and inside corners when I replaced an entire wood panel wall with drywall. I think the product works great, but you need to be careful not to tear it with the sharp corners of your tools. Also, it will make you itch like hell, so it's a good idea to wear latex gloves.

@JRFarmercom

@@monkeygraborange yeah, that's an excellent point. Working with fiberglass on a daily basis would definitely be cause for concern, so it makes sense a pro would avoid it for that reason. I tape drywall once every 2 years or so, not so much of a concern for me.

@@JRFarmercom Not necessarily true. Your lungs don’t expel foreign agents like your stomach does. People didn’t exactly eat asbestos, but died of it nonetheless. Same with silicosis and black lung. Did you know there’s a type of emphysema endemic to urban dwellers? If the entire planet can be forced to wear masks for some fabricated pandemic, then wearing a mask when handling potentially toxic substances should be a no-brainer.
