Why Don't We Have Pet Foxes?

Both foxes and dogs belong to the same family Canidae. Then why haven’t foxes become our companions too?
To answer this, in 1950, a group of Russian scientists began an experiment to try and create the first ever pet fox species. The study led by Russian geneticist Dmitry K. Belyaev started out to understand how animals are domesticated.
There is some evidence that early humans did try to tame the fox. But foxes are very shy and chaotic animals. In comparison, the wolf might have been easier to domesticate. This might be one reason that they weren’t domesticated.
The Russian fox farm experiment showed that it is possible to tame the fox. They are now investigating which genes might make some animals like the dogs friendly towards humans but others like foxes aggressive.

@@nightever426 Fennec Foxes are very small foxes (they can literally fit in your hand!) that are sometimes sold as pets, and since they are omnivorous, they can eat just about anything, though, IIRC they have a preference for fruit, and they can survive longer than most animals can without water as their natural habitat tends to be in deserts. They can be very loud in certain circumstances, so much so that they could likely even be heard from outside of your house even with all of your windows & doors closed. But Fennec Foxes are undeniably cute little things, and if you are willing and able to make the commitment, a Fennec Fox could make a good pet if you learn how to properly raise and care for one. And in rare cases, wild foxes that can no longer return to the wild can sometimes be kept as "pets", but that is only because those foxes can't survive in the wild anymore. If you happen to come across a very young Kit (a baby fox) that has lost his/her mother somehow, it might be possible to get that baby to "imprint" on you and come to view you as it's new parent, but even then, they would still be wild animals at their core, and that is something you would always have to keep in mind.

A friend of mine tried to keep as a pet a fox cub they found in the woods. While the little fox was adorable, quite affectionate and even learnt how to use a litter-box, he was also hyper-active, really loud at night, smelly and constantly biting furniture all around the house. It goes without saying that he wasn't a welcome presence for the chickens in their farm either - and could not be trained not to hunt for them. Unfortunately he ran away after a couple of months after smelling his mother and brothers. We don't know for sure if he joined back the group and if he's able to hunt to survive after his time with humans. Long story short: until a tame/more domesticated kind of fox is bred, they do not make for good pets. They are beautiful and smart animals, but are better left in the wild.

Wolves are pretty close to humans in size-100+ pounds-so it makes sense that they would’ve been helpful in hunting similar ice-age prey, eventually turning into dogs (and shrinking into chihuahuas 1000s of years later as needs changed). Foxes are naturally tiny in comparison, and wouldn’t have been much assistance until we invented agriculture and needed rodent control. But cats-still barely distinguishable from wild cousins today-were more murderous predators and filled that niche first.

We can tame many animals when we study to understand them. we have to learn 'their language'. Learn how they tick: how they bond, how they show trust. I searched for this topic because we have two juvenile foxes living in our condo community. They hang out right outside my building, running and playing with each other in the evenings. Neighbors have reported seeing what they presume is the mother with the youngsters, but I’ve only seen the young ones. We’re in a fairly urban area, too, with freeways all around us. I’ve seen plenty of coyotes, possums, raccoons, and the occasional bobcat, all within our fenced and gated community. The foxes are new, only having been seen in the past year or two. Seeing them run around outside, along with the fact that they don’t seem to try to run off or hide when they see a human, made me wonder why they haven’t been domesticated. This video explains it well. Maybe if we work on them for a few thousand years, we’ll get there.

1:42 so its also cats. 2:27 people, do NOT listen there. That's not true can i barn! Four of the reasons is that foxes have a more advanced developmental ability than other animal species are. foxes intelligence are lower the other in canidae but still is foxes smarter than them. Too high intelligence. So foxes should not be as bored in captivity. Foxes sleep 9,8 hours of day. Wolves sleep 7 hours. Human sleep 8,2 hours of day. In London and other cities, foxes are shown to be able to develop domestication on their own paw (hand).

hi. im a fox expert specialised on red foxes. i study them since 15 years. and yes they hunt solitary but they are devinitly NOT solitary. they are extreemly social animals with mostly monogamous partners they stay together for lifetime and they have extrem strong family bounds. od they are poligamous but NEVER solitary. and when you know how it is possible every fox to tame, even wild foxes, but to be fair, by wild foxes its extremly difficult and needs a lot of time. and its not good. wild foxes must stay wild. but foxes can bound extremly strong, even to humans, and they are absolutley faithful.

If you really, REALLY, would like to know what it would be like to raise and keep an undomesticated, wild fox in your house as a pet, there is a book you have got to read. To Catch a Fox, aptly relays the story in the most humorous and informative terms you can possibly imagine. The book is available on Amazon.

Humans were able to hit a critical mass of semi-domesticated wolves that were just tame enough to keep running the experiment long enough to get dogs. The critical mass of Domestic Silver Foxes only happened in the late Soviet era. Nothing more magical than that. There is no modern technology required to run the experiment. You could do it using only technology that is pretty ancient. Writing helps but isn't required. You need some way of creating a "Pen" to hold the still-too-crazy non-domesticated animals for generations 1-6. Wash Rinse Repeat.

@tulenik71
@tulenik71 5 месяцев назад
Not true. Foxes also form family groups. And pack is extended family/family group (or even unrelated individuals, anyone can join a pack). On the other side, pack theory is disproven for decades. In part, by the same researches who originally founded it. Unfortunately, based on wrong observations/wrong interpretation of those observations.

Many animals were often kept as pets, domestication was a rare, extreme version of pet ownership. The keeping of wild animals has slowly been made illegal and has fallen out of favor through various means
@Mobin92
@Mobin92 Год назад
That's the point though. A domesticated animal genetically / instinctively doesn't mind being kept around humans. While taming is "brain washing" an individual wild animal.

This is inaccurate. A lot of common dog breeds (such as the pomeranian and many Spitz breeds) are genetically related fo foxes and not wolves. We did domesticate the fox.

dogs are not wolves bred to be tame. dogs evolved from wolves around man and his rubbish / waste. The wolves willing to come close to tribes - the "tamest" evolved into dogs.
