Why Ferrari's 2024 F1 car is a risky outlier

Ferrari's "completely revamped" 2024 F1 car has broken cover and there's one area it has kept the same that leaves Ferrari as a risky outlier compared to its main rivals.
The new Ferrari SF-24 is described by technical director Enrico Cardile as a "big departure" from Ferrari's first two cars of the ground effect era that started in 2022.
And Ferrari's putting a huge emphasis on its aerodynamic work turning it into a title contender, prioritising that over a new suspension direction that would bring it in line with its rivals. Will that pay off, or has it baked in a fundamental performance limitation?

The strongest trait of the previous two cars was always its excellent mechanical grip and traction out of slow corners. It makes sense to retain the pullrod rear suspension if the possible aerodynamic gains from switching to pushrod just don't offset that advantage of the existing mounting, and instead work around the suspension architecture instead (which it seems they have done extensively)

One very precise comment on the video about Vasseur: When he arrived the team had no confidence, the guys were already believing on the team droping efficiency after the stat of the season. Yes there were some mistakes after the midseason break, we could discuss Leclerc strategy on Singapore, although that one I think they were with their hands tied, and Sainz strategy at Abu Dhabi, even if the car was damaged from Vegas yet, but after Spain, they actually did pretty well strategy wise. Ferrari have created a whole new aerodynamic platform with the short time given, that is very impressive in itself, clearly they have a plan and its clear this car will see evolution throughout the season because they arent constrained to development unlike last year. Theyve added their own innovations and if they can keep the good traits from last year and fix everything wrong from last year theyd be on course to at least be definite 2nd or even give Redbull trouble at some races this season, they deserve full credit to what theyve done

@@cidiracing7481 Ferrari had the same amount of upgrades as Williams (13) and still finished definite 2nd in the 2nd half of the season and also won a race, compared to Mclaren with 27 upgrades, they were constrained due to the aerodynamic platform of the SF-23, they just need to be intelligent on how they improve on the car which they sort of have focusing on the operating window mainly so they can achieve same levels of race pace as qualifying pace.
@cidiracing7481
@cidiracing7481 5 месяцев назад
@@kavirajnosib4648 Pretty sure Ferrari did not finish 2nd in the second half. McLaren had been more often on the podium than Ferrari in the second half and had overall the stronger car. Ferrari had the edge on straightline speed over McLaren. Third fastest ahead of Mercedes yes. A big help there was also AM screwing up their car development massively. Yes McLaren had more upgrades, but they knew before the launch already the car was garbage. They didn't get the car ready for launch and started the first 8 races driving around at the back. From all the teams (excluding RB because they didn't really need to change much), they understood the car the best and their upgrades worked pretty much spotless. In the last 14 races McLaren managed 7 P2 and 2 P3 once they deployed their upgrades. Yes Ferrari managed a win, but 3 P2 and 5 P3. The win wasn't because the car was so great. The win was simply because the RB was garbage on that track and a masterclass strategic drive from Sainz. That's what gave them the victory. If Sainz doesn't have the presence of mind to drive that way, he ends up P3 at best. Its not like 2022 when Ferrari won races on actual pace. The only thing the victory showed is that the best race strategy personnel at Ferrari is their race driver. The biggest question will be anyway if they fixed their tyre deg or not.

@@cidiracing7481 That's the thing Mclaren threw physical upgrades at the car, Ferrari took the process to understand their car and adapted their mechanical platform in such a way it counted as an upgrade compared to the physical upgrades that were constantly on the Mclaren, sure they may of been on the podium but Ferrari had the better race pace at the end of the 2023 season. The most important thing was how Ferrari was able to adapt their mechanical platform, they also fixed their tyre deg issues at the end of the season as well if you compare the Conservative race of Singapore to the flat out constant attack and defence of Charles at Vegas. If Ferrari were able to improve the car so much by changing setup imagine what they can do with a car that unlocks development in multiple key areas, the question is wether the Ferrari will be able to keep a stable platform and not fall off like Aston Martin or plateau like Mclaren

I don't fully understand the negative behind keeping the pull-rod setup in the back. You can make both work depending on how the geometry is laid out. The only negative is that it may take away some design freedom to the diffuser depending on how things are laid out in conjunction with the gearbox. I think this is a little over stated by THE RACE here. Just because everyone else goes one way doesn't mean its wrong for Ferrari to go this path... it comes down to the entire package working together and teams have to weigh what they want to prioritize as you can't have a perfect package in all areas because if you improve one area your going to impact another area negatively.

If any other team went with this rear suspension no one would call it a mistake, other teams are going there purely to copy red bull, there is no significant performance gains, yes some freeing up of aerodynamic space but nothing significant at all, same as the front suspension, not much mechanical difference that can't be compensated for in others way, still brings its own advantages vs the red bull choice which then also has its disadvantages. The duct in the nose is for the driver cooling. The lower side exit on the halo is a S-duct, with the entrance to it being on the floor underneath the undercut. Its taking messy air from the side of the chassis and cleaning it up before feeding it into the sidepod trench. The upper appendage is just a aero appendage

with them making changes to basically prep for lewis ive been wondering how thatll affect sainz specifically throughout this season. with leclerc staying i assume theyll ofc be taking his input. As for as sainz though i wonder if theyll just basically be using him as a glorified guinea pig to test the changes for hamilton. i also wonder if theyre really going to be chasing wins this year or just be solely focused on improving as much as they can to get set in for the 25-26 season.

Other teams goes with pushrod at the back to copy RB. But if i have to chose if finishing 2nd copying RB or finishing 2nd taking my own way, i prefer 1000 times the 2nd option, it's the only one that can give you some positive (as negative) surprises. Instead copying the original will not be profitable, cause RB is two years forward that concept. Great choice from Ferrari

@@victortoba-ogunleye4056 1. There's budget cap 2. The difference in personnel and structure between top teams and the others is so huge that ifna top team do a wrong car they will finish 2nd or 4th at max. And also in the scenario Ferrari will end 4th is better to end there following your own path than copying others not knowing different ways of development, cause only the 1st won, ending 2nd or 4th doesn't really matter.

Ferrari had a fast car last season especially on a Saturday, on race days it was tough on tyres. I reckon this season they'll be challenging more for wins as long as LeClerc's bad luck has changed. Sainz has nothing to loose too so we could see fireworks. 👍

Can't be worse than what will happen with Mercedes. If he had any confidence in Merc he wouldn't leave. It's not surprising he has no confidence in them. Merc, and even more so AMG, have been bleeding top people. With new engines coming in 2026, Merc will be so screwed. The engine is what gave them all those titles. It's not that their aero was so fantastic. If I would have to pick a team that is most likely to become top dog in the next few years, I would say McLaren is the most likely one outside of the current top dog. But they are happy with their young driver lineup and have no place for Hamilton.

He should be worried. So many great drivers have gone to Ferrari and failed. The team seems to be toxic when it comes to drivers and nearly always has been. Only Lauda and Schumacher ever got to grips with the team and they were both exceptional talents when it came to working with engineers. I'm not sure Hamilton has quite the same skill set as those guys. He is just a great driver when given the right tools. The last two seasons have exposed his weaknesses in not so good machinery.
