Just bought a small boat engine today, I've taken the carb off at least 10 times, carb spray all the way thru ultrasonic cleaning in gas in a zip lock bag in my harbor freight cleaner, still didn't run right, it wasn't getting enough gas I think was the problem, after watching your video last, and getting the float to where it was just touching the float needle, I crossed my fingers and gave it a shot. Your video helped so much, fired right up and revved like it should. Thanks for posting this video

It seems a common theme to say how helpful this video is regarding the understanding of why the float height is so important. I agree with everyone of them. Such a helpful and simple video yet brilliant. I was reluctant to watch as I was looking for information on a bing carburettor and as your image does not show the same make I did not think it could apply to my carburettor. How wrong was I. Your video clears the intrigue and mystery regardless of the make of carb. I totally get that float height is your 1st thing to check. It is so obvious when this is explained they way you have. What a frickin awesome video. Thank you thank you thank you. I doff my cap to you Sir 🎩

best explanation (actually, the ONLY explanation) i have seen regarding the effect of float height on fuel mixture. good job. i would add, for those new to the inside of a carb, that the plunger on top of the float needle is spring loaded and you should be able to depress it easily and it should spring right back . sometimes varnish from old fuel will seize it up but i have a good record of bringing them back to life by spraying with carb cleaner.

Thanks so much for that information you just helped me fix my 2013 yz250 it was revving to the moon after start up previous owner said that it needed carb work thought it was the crank seals were bad and caused a air leak and had bike screaming after starting. After watching this video I observed and noticed He or someone else messed with float height causing the bike to get massive air and little gas. Would of never know if it was for this informative video 🤘 you rock bro Ps- I ordered a lectron carb two days ago to see if that would fix it. Should I keep lectron carb or return and get money back since I fixed my problem???

Great vid man, thanks. I've been having a Hell of a time trying to adjust my Keihin PKW on my KDX200. Was dumping fuel really badly, also running way rich. Seriously bogging on the low end. So I Lowered the floats to cut fuel off sooner. That stopped the dumping of fuel but its still bogging when I crack the throttle. I backed the fuel/air screw out so much that it shook its way out on a trail ride! Should I mess with the float tab some more? Its a new float from a rebuild kit. If I re-jet from stock, what main jet should I go with? I also live in NC. Weather is cooler now. Not crazy humid like this summer. Thanks again Brother. T
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 5 лет назад
Set the float height to the stock setting, I wouldn't adjust it to fix a problem. Your jets should be in the 42 pilot and 155 main or somewhere around there. The mixture screw leans it out when you back it out so a bog down low will be worse the more you back it out. Set it to 1and 1/2 turns out to start. I can walk you through some jetting if you need it but start out by making sure everything is in good order, air filter, silencer, plug etc.

Spartan375x I know what you mean but it’s not rocket science. If you lean carb only a little and it’s dripping fuel from the float overflow fuel level too high. If you’re wide open throttle and after 10 to 20 seconds it bogs down float height is too low

Finally the importance of float level is revealed. Thanks a lot for simple but very [powerful explanation. Though the float level prescribed by the manufacture is achieved still we are not sure if the float level is sufficient to submerge the first 2 tiny holes of the main jet holder. It would be nice if you can reveal us the trick.
@TepcoCycleRepair
@TepcoCycleRepair 5 лет назад
Each emultion tube is different for different applications, some carbs have different ones you can chance to achieve different results. If everything is stock the stock height is sufficient to work with the emultion tube. Many people adjust the float to try to fix other issues, which in reality it should almost always be set to the stock height and the running problem lies elsewhere. (Usually jet sizes)

I replaced my 125 Xmotos carb with a 22mm Mikuni, then moved it to my retirement property at 7500ft elevation about two years ago, where I normally spend my summers. I think I may have lowered the float back then to help with the altitude, then never followed up on it...can't remember...Covid1984 makes it all so hazy...lol! Currently it will not run without the enrichment lever on. Been tryin needle and main jet, and suspecting the lean float was starving all the stages. After hearing you confirm that, I can't wait to play with the float adjustment! Hopefully I will soon happily update this comment! Update: Disappointed. I feel have taken the float adjustment from one extreme to the other, yet the bike will still not run without the enrichment turned on. If I blip the throttle ever so slightly, it dies. Getting rolling requires slipping the clutch at fast idle, but applying *no* throttle until up to speed. It will accelerate only at full throttle, and the exhaust sounds like it's lean and backfire tends to occur. At this point I wish my original carb hadn't got left back in Kansas! Lol! Now I am wondering if old fuel could cause this? I had a TT250 decades ago that ran but wouldn't accelerate till I finally ran my number size drills thru all the jets. They looked clear, but had a thin layer of "varnish", effectively reducing their size. Does this also happen with ethanol blend fuel? I am sure the jets are clear but have no idea if maybe the year old fuel could be causing these symptoms. Guess I will drain the tank and try some fresh...not real hopeful tho...

This is the first time I have seen this video. It is very helpful. I do have a carb question for you. I recently bought a new streetlegal enduro. The idol runs great and as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t run too rich or too lean. But my problem is a very slight drip from the overflow carb tube when the bike is on the kick stand after running. When I say slight, I mean slight. Over a night, I may have a couple drops or three drip from the tube. Is this normal? I run zero ethanol gas in the bike and have even drained some fuel from the carb and new gas from petcock into a bowl to see if maybe there was debris around the drain screw. The only other thing I can think of is the float may have not been set right from the factory? Any info will help. Thanks.
