I don’t like the term ‘quiet quitting.’ You’re not quitting anything. It’s called doing your job. It’s called having healthy boundaries. Since when is not giving your entire life over to a company a bad thing? It’s only bad for CEOs.
@collin9085
@collin9085 7 месяцев назад
Well there is a huge difference between the job of a professional (such as an architect, doctor, engineer, lawyer, information technology, etc.) and the job of unskilled labor (like a factory worker, grocery store clerk, etc.). In a professional field, it would be very adversarial to be inflexible. Also, it is bad for the client first and foremost, and in return it is bad for the boss (or CEO) as it damages their reputation. If you work at a potato chip factory, it's not critical to work longer hours to fill more orders for potato chips. In that case it is the owners duty to hire more staff. If you are a cyber security and you tell your client that, "I'll look at it on monday" when their private data has been breached... Or an architect who won't update the design for the big meeting tomorrow... or a lawyer who is unwilling to advise a client at off hours.

What I’ve noticed too is that a lot of companies used the pandemic as a reason to get rid of people they didn’t like or weren’t meeting their standards. They functioned off of skeleton crews throughout the pandemic but when life went back to normal they didn’t want to hire for the positions lost. I’m assuming it’s because they liked the way their numbers were looking while operating with just a skeleton crew. They’d burn out the people that were there and they held on thinking it was going to be temporary. I hate that they’re trying to paint this narrative that alot of people didn’t want to go back to work because of stimulus checks and unemployment.

I don't know why people talk about the stimulus checks being such a big reason as to why people don't want to go out and work. They weren't enough to live on for longer than a few weeks with each check, if that. Maybe what people mean when they say "free money" is all of the unemployment that people were collecting... eventually... once they could finally get through almost a year later, but most of gen Z wasn't earning unemployment because they either were not old enough to get laid off or they were the skeleton crews. They were the entry level essential jobs, like grocery store and fast food workers. I've talked to so many young people who are trying to get jobs right now and they all say that no one calls them back. My daughter has apply to nearly a hundred jobs in the last year, with little to no response.

I have a feeling most of these lay off could also become early retirements or else just regular retirements. I've legitimately never gotten any real raises or promotions... I have managed to move up to an executive level, but it's taken leaving my current companies for new ones in order to get that better title and higher pay. The "Tom" story is incredibly common in corporate america, based on my 20 years working for enterprise companies - companies very rarely ever really promote from within, *especially* if you're good.. as you said, if you're that good, who's going to replace you in your old position.

I do not focus on working extra hours but instead on making the most of the hours I do work and having the biggest impact I can during that time. So far it seems to be working. As an employer, pay a bit above market if you want to keep people and have the pick of the litter. A good work environment helps too. The good environment comes from paying well and bringing the best people on board. When we know we've got the best thing going, attitudes reflect that. When you as an employer are no better than anywhere else, you get what you ask for. Coasters and job hoppers.
@Lifeisshort2669
@Lifeisshort2669 7 месяцев назад
The ones that pay above market usually fill more jobs or all jobs depending on the barriers to enter the job(education, certifications) and as long as it's above market compared to other positions in the area (for example a child care worker could go to Walmart and take a job if childcare isn't paying). So that pay has to not just be above market for say just that position but compared to other positions the person with that skill level could take too!

People like O’Leary have to realize that people have a lot of other things going on in their lives, like family obligations, people dealing with mental and emotional stress, etc, and there’s nothing wrong with just doing your job, doing it well and not doing anything extra if that’s what’s best for you given the totality of your situation. That’s what you hired them for and that’s what they signed up for. The probability is that you’re going to have other people who want to do the extra work (at least for a time or a season, but that could change depending on what’s going on in their lives) and you should reward them above and beyond the regular compensation, and the person who’s just doing their job should get the regular compensation. You’re going to have a variety of people. Plus, you have to be careful with people who tell you what you want to hear and talk themselves up. Dependable, reliable people who just do their jobs tend to be more trustworthy than people who come off as smooth and highly ambitious.

I look closer at those who talk themselves up. my experience has been they steal credit and are grandiose. "work smarter not harder" ethos they espouse means they pawn off work on someone else. If companies pay you for 9-5, work 9-5. I give it my all for the hours I'm paid to work. owners are compensated for their mental and financial investment. Min wage workers help you get to your goal. No stock options, no royalties. Compensate them for the extra time they put in.

In my experience if you have a problem with lower level employees "checking out" on the job, (aka quite quitting), it's rarely the employee's fault. Either the employee has a problem going on in their family lives or it's a problem with management. And usually it's management. Note: Obviously there are always exceptions. I've known a few people that really just don't care about doing a good job. Or they claim they do, but they just can't stop themselves from sabotaging their own lives and careers. I suspect those people have some type of mental or emotional issue. But those people are in the minority.

@joelcorley3478
@joelcorley3478 7 месяцев назад
@@andrewg5416- I say the problem is usually management because management needs to be responsible for the systems, processes and environment their workers toil in. If your workers are complaining or not getting the job done, management probably isn't engaged in coming up with solutions. Hell, if that's the case, managers probably are not closely engaged with their teammates. In my experience half the time there are employees trying to get the job done, despite management throwing obstacles in their way or refusing to make suggested changes. A healthy management structure always has managers acting as facilitators that are engaged with their teams and looking for better solutions that keep their teams engaged and productive. An unhealthy management structure is stratified, cliquish and always seeking to assign blame for failures instead of helping facilitate solutions.

14:02 I disagree completely here. In fact, I emphatically disagree with you. The problem with the United States is the workers don't need to just do more for less to really compete. What they really need to do is the United States government and the people need to demand that their elected officials suspend the H-1B visa program as well as offshoring American jobs, putting up huge tariffs to make it unaffordable for them to do what they're currently doing. Because what we're seeing in terms of the H-1B visa program is that they're claiming they can't get enough workers within TEC. One thing we know about the millennials as well as the Zoomer generation is there's tons of people who are overly qualified for TEC. So the fact is you're trying to get cheaper labor to do these jobs and bring them to the United States. This is just wrong. And then we have jobs that we are getting offshored to different countries. And of course, there are laws written into place that allow these companies to do this and not face a penalty. If you stop this, the jobs will return here. Right now, we're all suffering because of the current laws that are in place. And the fault, to be honest with you, are the voters. We vote, whether you're left or right, Democrat or Republican, for people that screw us. Remember, a lot of the issues we're having right now in terms of the stimulus. Yeah, we can go ahead and blame workers for getting a $600, $2,000 stimulus check. Okay, we barely got any stimulus. If anything, it went to various countries around the world instead of going to support our country. So let's stop blaming the American people when it's actually the government. Now, we can blame the American people for voting for everyone who is in office who are supporting these laws and policies instead of repealing them and replacing them with something that benefits the actual American people. But it's sort of like here in Chicago and across the United States, where we currently have migrants sleeping in police stations, getting luxury hotel-free designer clothes, and then the American people are complaining, well, why can't we get this? Why aren't we getting this? Because as voters, you have become apathetic where you're voting in people who do not even have your best interests in mind. Look at how much they care about you. All you have to do is look at what's going on. But of course, people are shocked. I don't know why.

Most jobs like the dangle the false hope for a promotion as a carrot. Why would I strive to be middle management that at my current job really has no power to fire anyone. So people realize you have no power and the ones below you treat you poorly and the ones above you are constantly on you about performance scores. All for a 50 cent raise for a year only to get denied after the annual review for your full paid wage you were initially promised(1-2$ more) and you have to wait a whole other year for that wage. Either way we basically get paid the same and I don’t stress while my bosses are losing their sanity. Cut living expenses and have a great emergency fund for a year’s worth of expenses and live your life. That way when your bosses threaten to fire you, you can just laugh like I did, especially after I have proven to the company my value in an undeniable way. One time they tried saying otherwise and I straight up stopped trying and all of a sudden my promised pay raise was approved because they knew they couldn’t boss me around and they needed me if they wanted to look good to their superiors.
