Why Hosting The World Cup Is A Bad Idea For Countries

Nov. 20 is the opening day of the much anticipated FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The country is estimated to have spent roughly $229 billion on hosting the event, making it the most expensive World Cup ever, and more than four times as costly as all tournaments combined since 1990.
But aside from the honor involved with hosting the biggest soccer tournament in the world, it could draw massive exposure to a country: an influx of tourism, the potential for foreign trade, new development and jobs. For Qatar, the tiny Gulf country needed stadiums and infrastructure and used 1.7 million workers, 90% foreign, to help get the country ready.
The question remains, will the glory and questionable short- and long-term economic impacts outweigh the debt? Many experts say no.

It's only bad if you have to build the stadiums. I think this is why the world cup after Qatar was awarded to North America cause everything is already built basically.

It's a good look politically for FIFA if expenses won't go through the roof, as everyone knew the Qataris really wanted to flex their near-unlimited wealth. However FIFA also knew the vastly overbudget Montreal Olympics put a damper on subsequent Olympic bids. But eventually they'll have to go to another developing country (e.g. SE Asia) and they'll have to do the whole stadium building again. North America is oversaturated with pro sports and I don't see how another World Cup would expand the game in the continent.

As much I am not a fan of the WC at Qatar, the journalism are totally missing the point why Qatar is putting so much money into(getting) this WC. Most previous host had some type of infrastructure and stadiums already. Whereas Qatar has actual plans for all their stadiums outside of soccer and those infrastructures plans where already planned nonetheless to attract tourism. Some of the stadiums have been already used for other tournaments and will be hosting AFC Asian Cup in 2023 who also happened to be the current champions. On top of that this WC was meant to be creating a new portal and showcase the city on TV all over the world and attract tourism. It might not seem like profitable now but it will pay off later because Qatar is trying to not be fully depending on energy/oil money and make it a tourism spot like Dubai. Most places that haven been hosting were already attractive tourist spots already whereas Qatar, most people don’t even know where it is at on the world map.

It doesn't look good at home politically if the host team crash out in the group of 16, or worse have them lose all their games. The difference is of course, if you design a World Cup for 3 months, you will fail. When you design and construct stadiums, and 60% of the cost to construct it goes to contractors, you will see costs balloon. However, when you design a World Cup for 10+ years in the future, you will succeed. You can develop infrastructure, you get more people participating in football related events, you can create jobs for the future. Russia 2018 creates over 100,000 jobs in the country, hospitals, and improved ambulance routes. 1994 USA is one of the main reasons why the United States has a competitive football team and a professional league. Qatar 2022 is why Qatar’s population has been increasing at insane rates. It’s not just about the tournament, it’s for what’s next. What comes next for Qatar, is a national team inside of the top 50 in FIFA World Rankings, the defense of their Asian championship, their clubs competing in the Asian Champions League, one of the most visited countries on earth, hundred of thousands of jobs creates, improved diplomatic relations, and international recognition. The World Cup isn’t as one dimensional as most people look at it, clearly shown in this video that most people don’t look at the other side properly.

In Qatar there was a brilliant idea, they have built many easy to assemble/deassemble stadiums. They will deassemble those stadiums after the world cup and donates it to countries in need for them. Qatar gained a lot out of this, it might not has the same effect with other countries, Qatar is now known around the world even though it's a tiny state, they will boost tourism in Qatar, make new relationships around the world, become Known by itself is a very important gain. So, if what they are saying in this video is true, it doesn't mean it applies to everyone, Qatar has avoided the negatives and gained all the benefits of hosting the WC.

You cant put the price of world up on a spreadsheet. There are all sorts of unintended benefits. Loads of people/businesses set up shop there. They do need to differentiate from dubai though.
@hus390
@hus390 Год назад
I'm Qatari, the price tag is poorly misunderstood. It includes many multi billion dollars development projects that was planned for way before we won the bid in 2010. Like building new airport instead of the old (single runway) airport. Or new sea port to export more of our petrochemical products ( notice how completely unrelated to sports) Or modernizing and extending our roads to combat traffic (in a country where cheap petrol prices make people drive more instead of using public transportation)…etc. Along the way, the conditions of foreign workers have improved significantly. Some parts of the labour system were completely overhauled. The Kafala system was scrapped. Their accommodations were improved. Even FIFA acknowledged the reforms. I'm sick and tired of this anti-Qatar BS. Some just want to condition social and cultural changes to host such events. That's nonsensical, as it's unrelated to any of the qualifications in the bidding process. You can't just transform a socially conservative this easily. Some exceptions will be made for alcohol consumption in public during the tournament. (You can drink in Qatar but only in your house or in hotel bar). But even a guy like me who is fairly western minded, see a benefit of our way of life. We don't have to worry about drunk drivers while we are driving, or deal with violence caused by alcohol. You are all welcome to Qatar.
