My Yorkie boy was 10 at dx of a MCT between his toes. It was a grade 2 with dirty margins and mets to the sentinel lymph node so we opted for surgery, radiation and chemo. It was so hard on him but he lived another 5 years without it recurring. He ended up passing from kidney disease, actually at 15.

Thank you for providing this information. Can you tell me if you don't mind the cost of all this treatment combined?

@@fishmanhype6304i would also like to know this my Havanese Yorky mix has a small pink bump Between her toes I don’t know if it’s cancer yet because I haven’t gotten tested. I had to wait until her pet insurance went through or else I would’ve had to pay for it out of pocket because it would’ve been a pre-existing condition. But I plan to have it tested soon and hopefully it hasn’t spread. If it is something I cancer.

Mast cells have been a part of our dog ownership. We had a golden that had mast cells at 4, 6 and 8 years of age. She lived to 11 1/2. Our Berner had a mast cell occur right at the injection site of the rabies shot he received. Another Berner had one also. All were successfully cured by surgery and were fortunately low grade. We have since lost them all to other forms of cancer, but were are always vigilant when finding any new bumps. Thank you for your continued education regarding mast cell.

One of problems with mast cell tumors is the cost of treatment. Dogs in general have a modest life span of somewhere between 12-15 years, a few go longer, many go shorter. For a dog 8-10 years old saying your going to add 5 years of potential life to them is IMHO exaggerating the expected benefit. Your average family will struggle to find $1500-3000 for a tumor each time it grows back. IMHO you need to get the costs down if you are ever going to expect the average family to embrace these treatments. I would go so far as to say that it would be better for your field to be integrated with the veterinarian. In my life I have had a number of dogs. Of those 2 live until they were 12-13, 3 past away at younger ages, all for different reasons but life is that way. So many things contribute to a dogs longevity I find it hard to justify thousands of dollars in medical treatment that may or may not improve the pooches and their parents life for dogs that are in their senior years.

Thanks again for your continued efforts on educating on Stelfonta and for being the first of all my sources to finally give an availability date (8:00)! Question: In the 50+ hours of research I've done, I can't find info indicating if a MCT can be biopsied without the full surgery. For pet owners where money is an issue, the surgery prices range from $2k-4k at a specialist (actual quotes I've rec'd). If the MCT ends up being high grade, and combined with other factors/risks like age and other diseases present, the pet owner might decide against the full surgery if a biopsy can be done to determine the grade prior to surgery (and it ends up being high grade). Alternatively, would cytological (vs. histological) grading be an option to increase a pet owner's confidence level that proceeding with the surgery is going be worthwhile enough to justify not only the cost but the other impacts to the dog and pet owner, especially with other factors that may be at play? (My dog's surgery is this Friday so this is more to plan ahead in the event he gets another or his littermate gets a MCT too.)

Hi--can you please point to any Stelfonta studies in which no funding or participation by either QBiotics or Virbac was involved? My dog was recently diagnosed with a mast cell tumor near one of her nipples, and since she's part boxer and very heat- and exercise intolerant I'm really concerned about general anesthesia for surgery, so I was excited when I heard about Stelfonta. However, I can't seem to find any studies that seem to be truly independent. Thanks!

I did not do the strikethrough in my comment, so I'm not sure why it came out like that.
