Dude, as an FK8 owner, the STi has much respect in my book and is truly a Legend in the automotive world. If I had more money, I would have definitely gotten the Sti as my second. The Best of both worlds. You did good and have nothing to prove to anyone. Enjoy and have fun man!!

Just made the same decision. I liked the analog feel much better. I felt like I was driving the STI and the Honda felt a little too refined like it was driving me lol. I also love the millions of options for mods on the STI. The Subaru sounds a billion times better as well. Lastly the AWD was a huge plus

I’m a former Subie guy who now drives a Type R. I have a soft spot for the STI but the CTR is a beast. If you could get one without markup, it’s the better deal inside and out... but those markups are crazy and no FWD car is worth nearly 50k. That said, I got my CTR at MSRP so it was a no brainier for me. Good luck with the STI... it’s a fun car for sure... can’t wait to see what the next generation has in store!

Thanks for the video and really nice comparison points between a Subaru WRX STI vs. the Civic Type R. I myself bought a 2020 Type R and I'm loving it. The only things I had to get used to of course is the electronic parking brake but I would have preferred a classic handbrake instead. It does have a nice feature called brake-hold which keeps the car in place when in neutral waiting at a stoplight and/or up a hill prevent car from rolling backwards. Only downside is that you have to manual turn it on everytime before you drive-off. The only major difference that I wish the Type R had vs the STI is the AWD. I live in the Pacific NW here in Oregon and there are Subies everywhere!! The terrain, the weather, rain/snow is what calls for the Subaru to excel in these neck of the woods. I think the Type R would only be suitable in the summer when the rains are not present. The 20s and stock tires on my Type R didn't last a month until I got tired of the ride quality and decided to upgrade out of them. I did have to spend around $2300 but it was something I was planning to do on the vehicle and the changes I made created a whole lot difference in ride quality overall. I also like how the Type R has the ability to rev-match and since my manual skills are only intermediate at best and I lack the heel-toe experience that many advanced manual drivers have, driving the Subie may not have been as forgiving as the Type R. I have not test a WRX yet but I hope to sometime in the near future as the WRX sedan would be what I need for where I'm at this coming winter. On a sidenote, as many Type R owners have also experienced, after doing some extensive research, I decided to purchase my Type R out of state without first test driving it and luckily it has worked out for me thus far. Some dealerships are anal and require some commitment to buy before even allowing a test drive.

@No B The 2019 WRX STI gets slightly more powerful for 2019 thanks in part to a new air intake and performance exhaust system, which bumps engine output from 305 horsepower to 310. Likewise, the four-cylinder mill receives a retuned engine control unit (ECU) and stronger pistons. The manual transmission also has a shorter third gear that Subaru says improves acceleration.

I owned an FK8 Type R for 4 years and just sold it recently and picked up a 21 STI. This is my 3rd STI I've owned and it has been a great car so far. I love the more pronounced turbo lag feeling on the EJ257. I definitely agree with your points, especially in regards to the interior having less blind spots. At the end of the day, they're both great cars and you really can't go wrong either way. @tylerthepally637 3 года назад
The only problem is that they didn't do enough refining for so many years, until this most recent s209 type RA engine and the 19'-21' Sti models that got it. They finally addressed several (not all) of the weak/underdeveloped areas and people are pushing the power they should be able to on a stock block. The CTR is not much better on gas mileage, the interior sucks besides the awesome seats. the infotainment is laggy, the rear of the car is uglier than sin and the exhaust sounds like shit even modded. So I wouldn’t say miles ahead. Who knows how well the engine reliability is. The front of the car looks great id have to admit. M3, RS3, C63, are cars that are MILES ahead of the STI

@@novaGRCircuit that’s a valid point I totally respect that. But you can buy a 2002 Subaru Impreza wrx sti and is the same car as the 2021 even the seat heat button are the same 20 years after. Honda is marking up the type r as Ford the raptor or the Shelby or gm the zl1 or Mitsubishi the evo era specially the final edition and you forgot that Subaru mark up the s209 I saw sti s209 50k over sticker that’s ridiculous for a car with 30hp than regular sti. The sti is an excellent car not as reliable as Honda but it is a good car but it’s not better than the type r that’s why the type r cost more and also hold the value so well. The sti is a rally focus car and the type r is a track focus car you’re comparing orange to apples Edit: and if you don’t want to pay premium but want a good car the veloster n is amazing for the price.

I was looking at the Type R so I went on Cargurus to check out what was for sale. There was page after page after page for sale and many had less then five thousand miles. Why in the world were people selling their cars after hardly spending any time behind the wheel?? My local dealership did not have any on the lot nor were they expecting any to come in. I was told there was huge demand and they wish they had some. The whole thing was just plain weird. So I bought a low mileage 2006 Hawkeye WRX STI. What a car!

I was looking at a few LEs, but couldn’t justify spending 65-70k for a civic. That’s why I just went with a 2020 championship white. I lucked out and found one that Honda used for displays at shows around the country. Paid used price for a virtually brand new car. LE is awesome though, and in the long run will probably be a good investment. Might sell for 100k at Barrett Jackson or mecum in 10-20 years. Also would be awesome for bragging rights at meets or H-Day.

Now for the type R, yeah it is faster OEM but with all the mark up you are paying like 40k + for the car, which is the same price for you to get a base STI + stage 2~3 and would be much faster than the R. I was in this same dilemma.. Local Subie dealer is letting their STI's go for $1k under MSRP... luckily.. i was able to find a CPO 2021 Type R that was under $39k (2.3k miles), but did have to fly to the east coast to get it and drive it back.. hit quite a few potholes on the trip back, but no cracks or bends.. That being said.. i did order some 18's with a 255/40 tire size.. I test drove both the STI and CTR on the same day and the CTR has MONSTROUS pull above 4k.. the STI definitely feels lacking compared to the CTR with top-end pull.. That can be addressed easily with a tune and some bolt-ons on the STI, but the CTR is a lot more practical.. and the biggest thing.. Comfort mode is LEGIT on the CTR.. spent about 95% of the drive back from the east coast in comfort mode.. The duality of the CTR is the appeal.. at least for us older cats, lol..

You jumped in at the wrong time tho man, for 2022 Subaru is completely redesigning the WRX and STI, as 2022 is when the new Generation lands. Same with the VW GTI and Golf-R, same with the Civic and Type-R, and there is even a GR Corolla coming to the states in 2022 or 2023. Now isn't the best time to buy any new sporty car. The new Generation cars are looking to blow the old generation out of the water. The VW GTI and Golf-R are shedding a bit of weight and getting more power. The new Gen WRX (NOT-STI) will be getting 295 Horsepower! Things are going to change big time for cars in the next 12-30 months. By the end of 2022 there will be a whole new performance car game.

But the R will suffice just as much when it comes here (yeah AWD sounds nice, but i know my way around snow driving). One Minus i have to give is the Handbrake or the lack of it. I had the same decision between these cars (and a few others). Here's my comparison side by side to yours. 1. Price and dealer mark up. They are both the same price where i live so a non issue. 2. Wheel and tyre. Totally agree with you. But we generally up size the width of the rims anyway so new rims is always on the list of upgrades for any car. On the subject, the sti rides far better in traffic. 3. Looks, well totally personal preference. I thought the sti was a box with a wing. Type R wins in looks for me. 4. Wanted something new. Well that's your total personal circumstance. 5. More enjoyable behind the wheel. Have to disagree, you need to be able to drive to keep a fwd up with an awd. The type R will punish you if you get it wrong. Its also so light in comparison. Great feel. 6. Shifter feel. Well most people say the type R is better, again personal preference. 7. Manual hand brake. Totally agree. I dislike the electronic hand brake in the type R. Stops you drifting etc. 8. Visability when inside. Again agree with you there, but ilthe addition of the side camera overcomes and possibly makes the type R better overall. 9. Seats not as hugging, will likely last longer. Agree there. But the hugging seats are needed. Sti internal quality seems better overall than the type R. 10. Headlights swival. I've never compared this. So I'll say the STI is superior here. 11. Exhaust sounds better. Yep STI always wins this. And you have 4 tips as opposed to 3 in the Type R. Clearly a winner there. 12. You didn't really highlight it, but AWD is awesome. STI for the win, except if you get a tyre fail and you need to replace all 4.(subie worse issue than all other awd cars) Why the civic won for me 1. Fuel economy. This is my daily I transport the family around in. I do a lot of miles/km. The Type R can run on the cheapest fuel and only uses nearly half the of what the STI uses. 2. Superior cornering 3. Superior room for big feet. This ruled it out for me.

The only real answer as to why someone would buy an STI over a type R is that they don’t want to pay the stupid mark ups Honda dealerships are still charging. I was looking for a 2nd fun car to compliment my 19 zl1 M6, and the type r fit the bill at the advertised price. With the mark ups here, no. I’d rather just get a Supra or Tesla for a little more. I’ve owned an STI (2015, so basically the same at the 2021s) and the car was good. Just old tech back in 2015. In 2021, it’s well behind the times.
