Hey guys! This cool little piece of hybrid analog digital gear is something that I really wanted to get on the channel and check out. I really love the Mooer micro preamp pedals, and this seems like the natural progression from those, so I figured it's time to do a demo and review of the preamp live! Also, spoiler, you can control it with the app. I didn't know that, and was kind of shocked at how cool that was. Also the tone capture is a pretty cool feature... Boom.

Source is Preamp live base sound, Target tone is your Peavey sound. At the end you compare two preamp live tones - source to captured one. Real comparison of tones: peavey 5:39 captured tone 6:29

Great demo. Mooer does a great job of nailing this type of sound. I think at home and in the studio, using an app is pretty cool. In a bar, not sure I'd want to mess with wifi. You can't even depend on a common ground in some of the place I've played. But I digress.

Looks like a great piece of gear esp. in regards to knob lovers like I am. I mean I’ve got nothing against digital stuff, but that tactile ‘analog’ feedback is something you just cannot replace with modern touchscreen tech (kudos to ampero lol)) Oh and yeah a more in-depth/mini series comparison would be great!

Watching now, so not sure what your opinions will be, but I remember commenting on one of your earlier videos about how I wanted this even though it doesn't do as much as say the ge series with effects and all, but it just seems like the perfect product for what it is trying to be, a preamp with versatile options. The way the boosts, global presence, cab on/off for separate outputs, etc. It's just really well thought out and a super clean layout. I haven't plugged a guitar into anything but an interface in months, but this video makes me want this again.....

I feel like if you like the preamp pedals, then this is a win. It does everything pretty much the same as a preamp pedal, but has tons of extra amps/cabs. You can boost. It has a noise gate. And it adds a presence control that all the MP's are missing. It's pretty awesome!

Makes me want to buy it and capture ppls amps. I'll have to rewatch your tone capturing amp sims but I am curious if this does it better bc it has less going on then the ge250.

That pedal is the centerpiece of my rig. Further if you buy a midi host device (I did) it can be used to control Zoom Multistomp boxes via their usb

Before the tone cap which needs to be run in 4cm, were you using a power amp?

these things are great when u can find one that's reliable and doesn't crapout easily.. ive heard alot of horror stories about these units hopefully they got more reliable... i have one thats still kicking and i love it.. theres few groups on Facebook that share tones captures and talk about it more.. users n feedback is always awesome... after the tone capture is saved you have complete control of every knob to tweak and fine tune the tone after its captured.. having the ability to run third party irs into each patch is cool to add further customization per preamp patch. i run mine 4cm with an hx effects.. i use the MPL 1/4 inch out with cab sim deactivated into the return of my amps fx loop for a amp feel monitor while simultaneously routing the xlr out with ir loaded to FOH.. great tone tool... i honestly think mooer abandoned support or development on this great product too quickly moved on to their ge units...

Man i can't believe that Mooer is dropping the ball on this killer preamp unit. No updates to it in 2yrs now. Got beat on them for that. Secondly, i would love to see you do a demo of this preamp using effects in the loop and using a Seymour Duncan power 700 with it. That would be the smallest live rig out there next to Mustaine using the power 700 with the Neural DSP.

I’ve wondered how the array of the mooer modeled amp tones compare in relation to the different categories of gear used. Micro preamps, preamp live, ge series, and their physical practice amp that models. I really wanted the preamp live but the ge 250 came out, ge 250 had fx and a loop too. Wish the ge series had Bluetooth.

The tone capture sounded like it had a tiny bit more top end/presence than the real amp. Did you have the boost on in the Mooer when you shot them out, perhaps? 🤔🧐 Otherwise it definitely recreated that snarl that the 5150 has and definitely would work live or in a mix. But of course my fave was when I heard “let’s try the Blacknight patch” 😍🥰 Won’t lie, caught my attention before you started playing 😁 Also, is that the memeworthy cabclone on the head or the updated version that actually does what it’s supposed to? 😉😁 (to be fair I’ve never used one, just heard heaps about it which wasn’t exactly favourable 🤔).

i wonder how one of the Micro Preamps would sound with the Tone Capture GTR after? Like run the TC after the preamp on the 5150, capture it, and then try the 015 Micro Preamp INTO it(cab sim off) and apply a 3rd party IR on both signals to compare???

I don't think you can adjust how long the capture takes.. But yes, the tone capture is pretty awesome!

How would you rate the mooer ge200 vs the mooer preamp live...

They're different things... the ge200 has effects, and the preamp live is only amp emulation. I do think the emulation in the preamp live sounds better, but just slightly.

Hey man, amazing vid. I have a very specific question. I hope you can help me out. Cant seem to find that answer anywhere. I am trying to set up a completely portable rig without any physical amp or even a cabinet, only a pedal board with Line6 HX Effects (for all pedals) and the Mooer preamp live (for amp and cab sims) along with a couple of expression pedals hooked up to the Line6 HX Effects. My question is, in a live setting would I need to add a portable power amp to the signal chain? (Something like a Mooer baby bomb or Harley Benton GPA-100 or the Seymour Duncan power amp series) Is it necessary? And if it is, where should it be in the signal chain in context to what I wrote above? I’m unable to find this information. I want the Mooer preamp live to be at the end of my signal chain so I’m able to send the XLR out to front of house. Will the “boost” or the power amp simulation mode of the Mooer preamp live suffice for a powerful live sound? Please advice! Thanks once again and great video I subscribed.

If you don’t plan on using a cabinet, no. The power amp emulation in the preamp live is more like an EQ curve, but it works. However if you’re planning on playing live, it’s a good idea to have a power amp and a cabinet, even if you don’t plan on using it. I’ve played plenty of shows where front of house is just not an option, or the sounds system/engineer is terrible 🤷‍♂️ always better to have options…. Even an FRFR would be better than nothing IMO

So let’s say I get a Torpedo CAB M+ along with this setup (or any other power amp like harley benton GPA-100 or mooer baby bomb 30) where in the signal chain should the portable power amp sit? The idea here is to have a completely portable rig. I don’t own any amps or cabs plus I have no car. I want the setup to be as ergonomic as possible

Last. And if you don’t need it to power a cab, I’d leave it disconnected until you do. Think of it as a back up option.

So, when it comes to the amp modeling, is this better than Ampero? I don't use FX much, so I don't care about that, modelling only. What's your thougths?

Ampere is more realistic but ampero has a lot of high signal to noise ratio IMO but I play through my earphones so maybe I need to hear it with the actual outputs

as a back up job done, the real thing and 10 percent chasing stuff is all in the head, frustrationg as it is, tech is there, i doubt many would be able to tell loud or on a recording, it makes expensive amp owners feel a bit vexxed

Mooer preamp live is a great product. It is very budget-friendly and has tons of features. Will you please demo an Atomic Amplifier 12 or 6?

i really like the form factor, but no fx is a big issue. Not that i cannot put a delay and an reverb externally, but then i would need footwork to use it

I think what they are going for with the whole analog thing is appealing to the musician that uses a pedal board, so they probably already have the fx... but I have no idea.

@@TaylorDanley i have fx, a zoom multi stomp that will work ok with this among others but as you say, they seems aimed at the pedalboard spot when they could cover the whole ground. i will wait for the comparision with the micoramps, looks like fun!

I control mine in 4cm with a Boss MS-3. The Boss does all the MPL changes along with various MS-3 efffects.

The preamp live is all of them in one, with an fx loop, global presence control that's sorely needed on a couple of the mini pedals, built in boost and noise gate, programmable/switchable poweramp emulation, and you can change out the cab IR in your presets for your own, then google them on or off for each output individually. Plus the tone capture feature. For the price of 4 mini pedals, you can have all of that, plus the whole collection of 120 or so preamp emulations mooer made for the mini pedals. IMO it's kind of a no brainer if you already want multiple pedals.

@@AaronMorgan666 No, you would still need a power amp or powered speaker/cab with it. The power amp emulation is to give it a little character modeled from different tubes when running through a PA, FOH, or FRFR speaker, but doesn't actually provide power.

@@AaronMorgan666 It has separate outputs so you can run one out with the poweramp and cab emulation bypassed, into a head and cab for stage sound, and then run the other output with the poweramp and cab on to FOH for the sound guy

never used the firehawk. I used a pod hd, which I think has the same fx and modeling technology. It was OK. Good for the time.

@@TaylorDanley sorry for this silly question and the topic is not related with mooer preamp but I have to ask. I noticed that hotone ampero does not have send/return unlike mooer ge250. so my question is, do they have the send/return features?

I'm not sure what you mean. The 250 has send/return, and you can slo put them wherever you want in your chain. Did that answer your question?

really didnt know anything about this unit before you got it huh? most of the preamp models on here are the micro preamps. there are a bunch of extras that dont come as a micro preamp. i think those extra ones might be tone captures? but im not sure, thats just a guess. i had one of these for a couple weeks it sounded good but not great to me. I just couldnt ever get it to sound as good as i wanted it to.

Over the video, the MOOER sounded better than the 5150 to me, the 5150 sounded muffled.

A terrible product. It does sound good, but it is absolutely unreliable. After a week of buying it, it stopped working, luckily under warranty so I got it replaced. The new unit, after a year stopped working again. Unfortunately not under warranty anymore. I lost my money. I was able to record a couple of demos with it and that's all. Also, they stop developing the software. Don't buy it!
